street party 11
These guys were brilliant playing early R & B with early soul , can't explain how good it was hearing Booker T's green onions echoing through the northern Quarter , it was a magical day. I had heard these guys play before upstairs at the cornerhouse , very interesting choice of sounds played by them.

Soul Nights - Are You Cutting Back?
Well sort of , we do think twice about going to a long distance do's now , because petrol costs are so high , but you can also cut down in other areas , like food . I don't spend anywhere near the amount I used to spend on food . I waste less and cook traditional meals that came from a thrifty cook book , amazing how far lentils can go. This month I did my own low lights and didn't have my hair cut because I wanted to buy two records that I just couldn't resist Larry William - Boss lovin five dollars and Exceptional three & Ruby Carter - Unlucky Girl fifty dollars all in thats about 40 quid for two treeeeeeemendos sounds.

Tonys Empress Blackburn
Tonys Empress will always be special to me , as it was my first nighter ! I supported it many times travelling up from down south ( 6 hours in a transit ) I recall brian Jolly having his cowboy moment and many others. Some words from 1999 or 2000 I think ? regular Djs were Neil Rushton, Pete Coulson , Terry Davis Little Scotty . Moment I shall always remember was the old dear coming out with her broom telling us " Haven't you go homes to go to " and her looking fresh as daisy at the end of the night Ok arrives with posse at 11.45, unloads the boxes and passes that little disco bar on the right, who's waving at me Stoksie ! and Dave Caffrey, motions later , and enters the stairs. Do you know I could get on my knees and tenderly kiss every one of those stairs I love this place to bits. I get such a buzz from it I don't need drugs the place does it for me, it's carried me to dizzy heights, time and time again. Not many in, well we did arrive early, but there are more boxes than normal even Barry James is behind one! I sat for a while and watched. I get a lot of pleasure from this believe it or not, just watching people coming in and hugging each other, seeing their joy at meeting someone that maybe they haven't seen for a while. Enters Les swans in with his leather trench that he got for Christmas, gave me an enormous hug, always does, then Brenda ...It was great to see them, as I missed them the last time. Back on the floor .....dance ...dance ...dance Someone played the Four Sights! Love is a hurting game brill and that Al Gardner "Sweet Baby" aaaaaaaaaaaagh must get this it makes me melt with pleasure. We left an hour before it was due to end survived the night on Banana's coffee , bounty chocolate , and 4 pro plus tabs.....I have never been so wide awake....the place , the people , the sounds ,carried me. When we got in the car, it took it's toll , wasn't long before M was leaning on me I was leaning on Nige ( which was very nice ) ......and we ..sort of slept all the way back to Stafford. Footnote .... I didn't sleep ( I was pretending ) ooooh it was a lovely moment that only a nuturing cat would appreciate because I was struck by an arrow that night , still makes me smile thinking about it. I do recall a girlfriend saying to me ...should i die my ashes are to go between the floorboards in this place. Lot's of people loved Tonys.

Can't Stop Whistling This Tune
With me its something that is not soul related I find at work when I have have a hard issue to resolve I sing... Fly me to the mooooooooooooon and let me sit amongst the stars lol Jupiter and Mars seem so welcoming I think its a de-stresser and has hidden meaning like "please rescue me from this situ" beam me up scotty like What I have noticed is the guy that sits next to me now does it too lol The other thing I do is draw boxes and fill them in with squares , making them three D When I was younger I used to sing Stevie Wonders ..theres a place in the sun in these situations. Funny how the same tune comes to mind ? heeeeeeeeeeylp

2011-03-10: The Prestatyn Weekender - March 10th - 14th 2011
Knowing the guys that have been involved in all the preparation in creating this event pretty well .I am sure they do care Toad. I fully understand peoples frustrations but I think your energy would be better served actually contacting those that have changed what was originally on offer this being " Brittania Hotels " then maybe they might understand the volume of unhappy customers and the disapointment by those that share your concerns. I am sure what we know as "promoters" are actually doing all they can to put together an event that most will find enjoyable for the weekend. It must be hard enough for these guys as they know alot of you Personally without having to seeing negative assumptions being made about them . The bad boys in all of this is Brittania Hotels.

I like this too .........experts - my love is real - TAG LTD But to my ear this isn't funk its just something very different to what we are used to hearing , which leads to go full circle , try to avoid tagging anything in the future . We have this argument with some R&B sounds that for some are soul for others R&B. Just judge the sound on its unique quality as I am doing with Carrie Cleveland at the moment and that bloody contraption thats under shadowing her brilliant vocal...which i bet Rolf Harris loves , I am growing to accept its flaws because the lady singing and the lyrics a\re the main event for me. Martin from Hull recentely introduced us to a sound called Destiation Unknown by Chris Jones which a good example of which tag do you give it ? Half the problem is our expectations are sooooooooooo high and because it is a wide playing field now we have difficulty placing the sound in a specific box . Now this is very funky ....anyone play Bad Sam - Chuck Bridges .....awesome hamonica late on too !

One of the the areas that helped the soul education spread before the internet was tape swapping , do the funk collectors do the same with Cd's? To me that is one of the most effective ways to spread the knowledge fast to those that are voyers , that push the sounds forward, which leads to a much wider acceptance .... a foot in the door so to speak. My next question is are there any decent funk compilations out there ? We now have what used to be called ra audio clubs now known as MP3 clubs where collectors/dj's share what they have aquired/ purchased with others . I myself have been introduced to some great sounds in this way , for the last 8 years my own private club which was born out of everyones hate of R&B has evolved into an anything goes club , which blew many doors open for all of us within it's magic circle lol because we are all people that have Open ears Frank Jackson taught us to be receptive to anything soulful ( Julie London included ) lol I would welcome some samplers to play to the club if anyone is willing to share. The more people that know the music the more they spread the groove ....which leads to a wider acceptance from the dancefloor

Sunday Events - A Rising Trend ?
You know I can think of nothing better than to meet up down my local pub take a box of tunes and just share ... not to make money just to share what you have bought , or things that get missed on the general floor ? what you think might work in the future, or that maybe wont work becuase they are slow but are still good all the same , perhaps have a bar meal ? To not have the pressure of getting people to dance , just basically lend me your ears over a pint or two .... brilliant and if you wanna dance go for it. To me that is a sunday chill session , and for me you can get to hear some true gems . After a heavy weekend they would be the icing on the cake. Why not ? I don't have a lawn to mow or weeds to pull or a car to wash Now the other type of session that extends what has happened and friday and saturday..... Not really Its the come down day for me you see ... Don't mind attending one of these now and then , but they wouldn't hold me every sunday .... A collectors chill out session would though if it was close. So come on who is going to do one in Town on a sunday

How about this one Carms ? oooooooooooooowee that is amazing thank you sooooooooooo much , I really have to try and find out more about Del tell me is this one expensive too ? she has an awesome delivery so soulful such a great voice . https://www.youtube.c...h?v=o7jR4Vd6X6A That Towana is damn good too ! Its funny how as she hs been mentioned in Royal soul despatchses because ..... now do I say this? because no doubt sparks will start to fly . At home when I am in a funky mood and I play my funk playlist in Itunes tucked in there with the tracks I mentioned liking on previous posts is Towaway Zone by Diane Jenkins The point I am making is there are certain tunes that you can soulfully use to lead you into pushing a normal soulfully receptive audience into Funk .... and this is one of them for me along With Pat and the Neorotics "Watch you do your thing "...they sort of make you want to listen dig a little deeper intro the unknown because they are records that stand alone IMV they have a unique quality about them. The biggest mistake I ever made was selling my Paaaaaaaaaaaaaat ( as Mike Ried would say ) Someone out there will know what I mean . I think the Funk tune has to be really good for me , I dont get off on the bootsy inside your head chart stuff thats too mild, watered down. No Va va voom. For me Funk gets dirty ....almost primal when it moves you.

No probs it happens all the time they even call me dude at work now .... one of the boys now OH ....I left Deloras Ealy off my list , I've been looking . Now that is one hell of a sound that I would Iove to own best funky edge soul I have heard to date.......... blows everything out of the water IMHO nothing else has come close for me . But I am willing to keep being receptive so keep them coming please. I think I may have threw you with my with a few beers later remark GUINESS !

Scores so far on the Funk Punk compilation . Be great to have the proper titles . I really enjoyed the session so far , not all of them pulled my chain but a quite a few did ., and I found it thrilling exciting and fresh . I will put more time at some point and listen to the rest and thank you very much for the contribution. Track 1 = My turn Now This gets top marks for me I love it and would happily dance to it HIT Track 2 – Good on the ear but too fast for me to keep up with, I would imagine if fuelled you could really feel this one perhaps a nighter tune? 3/5 Track 3 = Try me Great female vocal and yes this scores high for me a great groove that is easy on the ear 4/5 Track 4 = Doing the long John Wow love that intro and it sounds so saaaaaaaassy Yeah I could dance to this 5/5 HITto me this soooooooul , I WANT ONE ! 5/5 Track 5 = Holy Moses Some nice pipe work in the intro again very soulful to my ear , not what I would tag as funky , very mellow a nice chiller but then it gets funky towards the end 4/5 HIT Track 6 – What can you do when you loose the one you love ( about 8 mins in )I love this an immediate Wower for me I would love one of these , I WANT ONE how much ? again to my ears this is SOUL 5/5 Track 7 – Indian road man ? Not sure about this a very strong vocal but its a little deep for me right now, perhaps a grower , not sure one I would classify as colourfully swirly = MISS Track 8 – I Just Can't wait any longer Lavern Baker isn't it ? Lol one I know , bet the crowd like this one J Track 9 – I'm a good woman One we all know 5/5 fantastic sound Barbara delivers every time and you never tire of hearing her agony in letting this guy go cause she deserves much better. 5/5 Track 10 – I'm the man Getting back onto the back foot , this is so James Browny this one yeah I like it makes me want to shake like a jelly roll lol and I love that brass when its on its way in. 4/5 Track 11 – Don't push me away No this one doesn't do it for me sorry it's a MISS Track 12 – Funky Music No again this is too far across the line for me reminds me of Edwin Stars War, which I never did like sorry MISS Runtime stop at 28.04 need to get ready for work ! I have jumped over the remaining tracks and it gets better really looking forward to giving the latter part of the set with a few beers later .- Playing Funk Records At Soul Venues
What about crossover northern funk like this one by the Three Smoking Guns - Revenge ...Die No this one doesn't do it for me either , sorry that would be a miss Hits for me would be the following this is the kind of groove I like when it comes to funk and these are the one's that have corrupted me Everything gonna be alright - I forget who sings it ? You put a wall between us - Koffi There was a Time - The Daps Let a woman be a woman and a man be a man - Dyke &the Blazers I know you got soul - Bobby Byrd Step it up - Bamboos What do i have to do - Marva Whitney Kissin my Love - Spanky Wilson Better things to do - Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings- Playing Funk Records At Soul Venues
Don't know if anyone else is up for it but I was thinking about this the other day , do you remember a prog called Juke box jury ? doubt it , you are all far too young. Anyway it went like this a tune is played and a panel of judges gave it marks out of five ... is it a hit or a miss? Now here is the idea why dont we use renfosoul in just that way ...put up some funk tracks and have some member participation as to how the sound moves them...a voting system I am up for devoting some time in being a panel member if someone would like to play and educate me. As a foot note the funky sisters track would be a miss for me , that doesn't push my buttons at all....sorry- Playing Funk Records At Soul Venues
What a lovely chap he was too , I heard he is a daddy now .....actually Win next time you are out venture up to the dj playing and look inside his box you will see all different coloured sleeves now .- 41-warren
