  1. Hi All, It doesn't happen very often, but it's been a very soulful Labor Day weekend for me. I think I did okay!
  2. Hi All, I just popped the Four Tops' Night LIghts Harmony LP on ABC onto the turntable and am really enjoying it. I haven't heard a lot of the post-Motown LPs. Are there any others I should check out? Many thanks, Tim
  3. Hello Everyone, There's not a lot of well-known soul band out of Minneapolis, but here's one that is definitely worth paying attention to! It's very likely you've heard "I Do Love My Lady" from Haze. The original LP is nearly impossible to find and sells for hundreds of dollars. The original 9-track album is now available to order on CD for the very first time by the band. The tapes were lost long ago, but it has been digitally remastered to CD from the original acetate and transferred via vintage equipment to maintain that warm sound. It sounds great. The track listing is: -When Were Kids -Waiting For The Moment -House On A Country Road -Toe Jam (Inst.) -I Do Love My Lady -Are You Free -Fill My Mind With Music -Foxy World -Higher Groove (Inst.) The CD is $15 US. Shipping is $5 to the UK and Europe, Australia and Japan, $2.75 within the US and $3 to Canada. Orders can be sent to olympian90@aol.com Also, there are limited quantities of the 2nd (and at the time) unreleased CD from Haze. The second album was recorded in 1979 and never released. A limited pressing of this CD is available. It is a very different sound. It has a 70s sound with a modern soul sound with horns backing them on several tracks. There are 4 bonus tracks included that were recorded at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia. The 2nd Haze CD is the same price -- $15. I have played both releases many times and think they're great, and you will, too! There are two more Haze releases scheduled in the months to come and several CDs in a series called Haze Divas. There will be 3 CDs in this series, which will include some great 70s soul artists from Minneapolis that have never been released before. Thanks, everyone, and I look forward to hearing from you.
  4. Just got word that Bobby Hebb died. Pull out that Sunny 45 and give it a spin. RIP, Bobby.
  5. Joe, I've got one and have been asking $20, so I'd say $15-$20ish. Cheers.
  6. I went to chap's house to look at 45s the other day and managed to find a nice pile of Maxine Brown 45s, 3 that were in the Wand sleeve + Carla Thomas - Gee Whiz in the Atlantic sleeve. I was quite pleased. I found: Chuck Jackson & Maxine Brown/Take Me Maxine Brown/One In A Million (the original, not the reissue)/WND 1117 - sadly, not in company sleeve Maxine Brown/One Step At A Time Maxine Brown/It's Gonna Be Alright (not in company sleeve, but in a beautiful Okeh sleeve) Maxine Brown/Oh, Not My Baby Carla Thomas/Gee Whiz/Atlantic 45-2086 Hopefully more to come! Cheers, everyone!
  7. I've got this on The Bay at the moment: https://cgi.ebay.com/Collins-and-Collins-Top-Stairs-Modern-Soul-45-/360269641924?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Music_on_Vinyl&hash=item53e1be78c4 This is A&M Records 2233-S, a 45 RPM/7" modern soul record from Collins and Collins for Top Of The Stairs w/Please Don't Break My Heart. The labels are in EX-/VG+ condition with a spot of very faint ring wear. The 45 visually grades VG to VG+ on A and VG+ on B. The 45 plays VG+ with very light background noise but with loud, clear play and sounds great.
  8. Hi All, I started out having all these incredible soul 45s pass through my hands as part of purchasing an enormous (50,000 45s) collection nearly 3 years ago. I couldn't justify keeping most records, as I thought about what else could be done with the money, but there were certain records that grabbed me so tightly when I played them that they went into my play boxes. I've been continuing to pile up a nice selection of Northern Soul and crossover 45s, which has made me ponder the possibility of playing out at a soul do. We have a Northern Soul night once a month and a soul/funk night once a month, so there may be chances out there. I'd love to hear about your first time playing out in front of a crowd. Part of me would be really excited about it, and part of me would be petrified. Do you remember the first record you played, and how your set was received! P.S. As part of all of this madness of collecting, I've started setting aside "interesting" soul cover 45s. Is there anyone else that does? A few gems so far: Anita Carter/I've Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now) Bill Black's Combo/But It's Alright Mark Farner Band/Just One Look T.G. Sheppard/I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch) Dave Mason/Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow Mark Farner Band/When A Man Loves A Woman PG&E/(Love Is Like A) Heat Wave Razzy Bailey/In The Midnight Hour Rita Coolidge/The Way You Do The Things You Do Rolling Stones/Ain't Too Proud To Beg
  9. Cheers All, Yep, the Black Wand is definitely rarer. I'm still fairly new to soul (3 years), so a lot of the 45s are new to me. Tim
  10. Hi All, Just heard this and really enjoyed it. What's this going for these days? Many thanks, Tim
  11. Kev, Have you considered Dallas/Austin? Cheers!
  12. Hi All, I found and played a promo 45 from Norman Charles for This Is Gonna Hurt w/She's A Woman on Columbia, and it's not bad. Has anyone heard this played out? Tim
  13. I haven't had anyone refuse to sell me 45s (except for a few times I've gone out on record buys and the chaps wanted too much for not-that-great records, so I made them a lowball offer which they passed on), but it brings a couple of stories to mind. Speaking of loads of records, I'm sure some of you have been to Bill's in Dallas. If you haven't, it's an experience. I was there about 7 years ago before he moved to a new location, so I don't know what the store looks like now. Nothing is priced, so you have to go up ask Bill what he wants, and the price is the price to my knowledge. After 2 hours of having a rummage, I chucked it in. I saw a few bits, but just didn't want to mess about with going up there with items. I was at the Wembley Record Fair 5-6 years back and saw a chap trying to beat up a dealer on an item (a videotape). He threw it on the ground, broke it into a million pieces and said "now no one is going to have it!" Finally, I host a record show in the states. There's this chap who used to come up to me all the time and say I have a record for a certain price and would ask me to justify why I had it for a different price. I would try to explain the condition might be different, they might have paid less than I did to acquire it, etc., but I finally ignored him instead. It's amazing!
  14. Hello everybody, I've got a stock RCA Victor 47-9159 Northern Soul 45 from The Metros for Since I Found My Baby w/No Baby. The labels are in VG to VG+ condition with ring wear. I've played it completely through with headphones. The 45 visually grades VG. It plays VG+ with loud, clear play with a bit of very faint background noise in the left channel on the intro and plays VG+ overall. I'm asking $175 but will consider offers. Thanks, everyone!
  15. Hello everyone, I've got Polydor PD 14176 from Pep Brown for Is It All Over w/Is It Too Late for sale. The labels are in VG+ condition with some faint station stamp on B and a bump under the B label. The 45 visually grades VG+ with some light marks. The 45 plays VG+ with a couple of bits of light noise on the intro, then plays EX- after on A. The B side plays EX- with a couple of pops during the intro but plays EX- with loud, clear play. I'm asking $175 but will consider offers. Thanks, everyone! Tim
  16. I wonder if I should e-mail him and let him know Bill Cosby is going to be live at a casino this summer a few hours from him!
  17. I've actually had several e-mails from this chap about a year ago. He lives about 90 miles from me. He e-mailed me 3-4 times when he saw all sorts of Northern Soul 45s in my eBay store and saying that it's a scam, etc. I answered a couple of his e-mails then kindly told him if he isn't going to buy records from me that he's wasting my time. This chap's riding the train to Bittertown!
  18. I just received a parcel posted from the UK on 26 April that arrived on the 30th, which is incredible (especially considering there was a Sunday in there), as it has never usually been that fast even before the ash cloud! Cheers!
  19. Kingbee is one of the best record stores in the UK. Les is a top chap! His store is the first place I go to after grabbing a nap after the flight arrives from the States! I always find good bits here and usually find a healthy pile of items and run out of time! The tram extension for Chorlton will be complete sometime next year, so the tram will drop off just up the street. Cheers.
  20. Actually, It was recorded on an Ampex 8-track system. In addition to the vintage Ampex, they also used vintage instruments. It's a great release!
  21. Chris, The Texas collection was the best. Imagine 50,000 unpicked 45s from one collector's personal collection. So many gems passed through my hands that I have wanted to keep, but couldn't justify it. Three copies of a soul/funk 45 from Tickled Pink, Reginald Milton and the Soul Jets ($1000), Second Resurrection 45, tons of Texas funk, loads of Northern, tons of garage, psych, and the best bit of all...the only known copy of a blues 45 on Sun from D.A. hunt to ever surface since 1953, which sold for over $10,000. I've only started to dig through the Louisiana 45s. It's a mix of a black-owned record store that was hit by Hurricane Katrina, and the other part of it is from a New Orleans jukebox route. Good pickings, indeed!
  22. Chris, There are another 150,000 45s from Louisiana and Texas in there, so I know there are some good bits in there.
  23. Hi All, I finally made it into my secondary 45 storage and spent a few hours Sunday having a rummage and found some good bits (some will be available soon): Jackie Lee/The Duck (not a biggie, but one for my box!) Johnny & Jackey/Let's Go To A Movie Baby - Anna Patti Hamilton/My Baby Loves Me - Lovelite Manhattans/Manhattan Stomp - Carnival Johnnie Walker/You're All Mine - Tollie Joe Tex/You Better Believe It Baby - Dial Ernie K. Doe/Dancin' Man - Duke Joe Tex/Skinny Legs and All - Dial Willie Bobo/1-2-3 (Uno, Dos, Tres) - Verve Hopefully there'll be more gems to come!
  24. I've got a mate that I played a bunch of Motown stuff to that he liked, so I'll play the Northern Soul stuff to him next.
