I was late to the soul collecting 45 scene, just 5 years ago August. However, I was fortunate enough to trade for a lot of the dearer records (I had non-soul 45s to offer), otherwise I wouldn't own them. The collection has grown nicely, but a lot of the records I want are just out of my reach, so I anticipate the collection will grow much slower than I would prefer. I am collecting only originals and holding out for M/M- or VG+ copies only if I can. For the dearer ones like Larry Clinton and the like, I'm content with my reissues. Five years on, I don't think I could start right now from 0 records.

I love my original 45s, but I'm thrilled that Outta Sight has reissued 45s like Gwen Owens or Larry Clinton. Otherwise, I could never own them, and even if I could, there are simply not enough originals to go around. Perhaps someone will pick up a reissue 45, get the collecting bug and start collecting originals and start DJing. Not a bad thing.

One of the problems with Crosley turntables is that they put terrible needles on them. They make a dansette model that has a good cartridge. I wouldn't put anything rareish on one. I have one Numark portable I bought in 2007 that still plays well, but it won't play LPs (the motor slows down), but it does great on 45s. I broke the weight off of my USB turntable after moving it around downstairs (d'oh!), so I replaced it (for now) with a Numark USB turntable portable and have an Audio-Technica Mister Disc I bought from a chap locally.
