  1. Right gentlemen, thank you very much for all this info. I certainly had no idea. For the record (no pun intended), mine's got a proper straight edge, and you can't see through it, so I'm assuming it's kosher. Does that sound about right? Cheers John

Hi Ted I had a simlar experience about 10 weeks ago. Record from a good US dealer (100% feedback etc), tracked by USPS. Proof of postage, then completely disappeared. No trace since in either the States or over here. Ran out of Paypal's time-limit to claim back, lost £55. That's the first time it's ever happened in over 600 US purchases, but it still binds. Interested in the other contributor being robbed blind by HM Revenue. I've had this 3 times, and it's cost me a small fortune. The issue is US dealers insisting on secure shipping with insurance, so they have to quote the full value of the record on the customs slip. If the customs spot it you get charged import duty and VAT, plus, and this is the real shitter, a holding charge while you pay. So you get charged for something that's not your fault and you can do nothing about. Wherever possible I NEVER go for secure shipping, and have even asked dealers to put $5 or whatever on the slip irrespective. I've never had such a record go missing, and it saves a mint. All the best John
  3. Hi All, Does anyone know if the 1974 single Marvin Holmes & Justice - You Better Keep Her (on Brown Door MH-6576) was bootlegged on a close lookalike. If so, what are the tell-tale details to look for? Thanks a lot John
  4. Spoken like a true crossover man . Actually, I got it for the Jo Ann Henderson side, 'cos I think £250 or so for a Phonograph is ridiculous. I must have seen well over a dozen copies sold this year, so it isn't that rare, just another must-have record with a typically inflated price. I'd never heard the Rose Mitchell version. I quite like it, but not for silly money. See you soon pal John
  5. Thank you all guys for your replies. As I expected, loads of knowledge delivered with a little bit of passion. Top stuff . I agree about the first half minute or so, it is a bit pointless. As to £800, that puts it well out of my range, even assuming I liked it enough to pay that kind of figure. Does anyone know if the Roseann release is legal? For £50 it ought to be . Just as an aside, I was 4 years old in 1954, so, for me, it's sort of contemporary , along with ration books, farthings and co-op milk tokens . Cheers folks John
  6. Hi all, I've been playing Rose Mitchell - Baby Please Don't Go from the RoseAnn release (flip is Jo Ann Henderson's version, originally on Phonograph). The Rose Mitchell originally came out in 1954 on Imperial 5260. Has anyone ever seen one of these? Was it released on 45 or 78 or both? Lastly, does anyone have it for sale (45 only)? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks John
  7. Hi all, has anyone got a copy of the above in at least VG++ condition? I'm looking for the original Island release, not the second release with I Feel So Bad on the top-side. I'll consider any reasonable ask. Please send PM. Thanks John

  9. Hi, I've loads of Goldmine, a few Stardust, and assorted 70s bootlegs. What sort of price were you looking to pay? Please PM me. Cheers John
  10. Up here in Sheffield the local BBC Radio Sheffield started a weekly experimental Soul show about 3 years ago with DJ Steve White. Over the months the amount of commercial stufff has fallen sharply as more and more Soulies caught on and started sending in requests. They also do a detailed 'Whats-On' diary to spread news of local Soul Nights, Weekenders and so on. It is now available on-line, and co-hosted with BBC Radio Leeds, and has recently joined with BBC Humberside, York and Lincoln to do the very first Radio Station All-Nighter. That's the power of Soul and the people who love it. Keep at it and good luck. John (Sheffield)
  11. Hi Scott, it was a pleasure to have you join us for a while. I'm glad Elliott's idea and efforts made so much cash. Brilliant stuff, and thanks to all who donated and made it so worthwhile. All the best John Moffatt (Darnall Horti, Sheffield)
  12. Buy us a pint at t'next Kay Gee Bee and we'll discuss it !
  13. Of course he does, otherwise t'coal gets all wet!
  14. Totaly agree with previous comments. We run the Washington in Sheffield between the Horse & Groom bimonthly events, and they work very well too. We get around 50 or so regularly. There's no charge, the DJs play what they want and the atmosphere is generally laid back with the odd skirmish on the dancefloor if anybody feels like it. Interestingly, the Washington would otherwise be closed on a Sunday afternoon, so the owners are well chuffed with us. There are no losers, it seems. The problem with Sundays is that most people work Monday, so staying out till midnight or whatever isn't an option. We have found that an 8.00pm close suits most of our people very well. We could extend, but I don't think there's the demand. Cheers John
  15. Eyup Andy, be nice to come and have a browse again - not buy anything, just browse . Not a bad location, near the Frog & Parrot, and Washington, and a few other watering holes. That could be a day out all on its own . Sithee soon John
  16. Good of you to offer Pete, thanks very much. Trouble is, I've no idea which ones. Can I take you up on it in a while when I've had a think and a good look? Thanks, John
  17. That's an awesome list Pete. Might be time for some concentrated research. Thanks a lot. John
  18. Sounds reasonable Chalky. Motown were ahead of the time when it came to multi-tracking and such. Some of the instrumentals, and acapellas, would have made great flip sides. John
  19. Certainly is! One for the vinyl cutters maybe? I can't see anyone letting me plug my MP3 player into the mixer somehow.
  20. To all who contributed, thanks very much indeed. I knew you lot out there would answer my question. Particularly grateful to those who posted clips. All the best, John
  21. Please PM me if you know. I'm told it's an LP track. Thanks in advance. John To all who contributed, thanks very much indeed. I knew you lot out there would answer my question. Particularly grateful to those who posted clips. All the best, John
  22. I'm looking for a couple of dozen or so totally useless coloured vinyl 45s (pure bin fodder) to use in a backlit display. The condition, style, artist, label etc., etc., are of no importance at all. Quite happy, of course, to fund shipping cost. Please PM me if you have any such junk lying around that you just want to get rid of. Thanks, John
