  1. My thoughts exactly when that guitar solo kicks in. I used to fade out at that point. Yes the Gypsy woman is kinda cool and the Mr Confuse is a head turner when driving and it is pumping through the car stereo. The Bass and Kick Drum have been produced superbly. I will be trying to copy that on my next few productions. KTF, Jay

  4. Hi Molly, Glad you like it. I got it at The Skegness Weekender from a record dealer. Afraid I don't recall their name. It was a recommendation from Andy Basket from Soul Purpose in Hinckley. He played it out when he dee-jayed for me at The Waterfront Blues & Soul Club in York earlier this year. As soon as I heard it I was straight over to the decks to find out what it was. Hence him giving me the nod at Skegness. The guy has got great taste. The tune is a limited release of a couple of hundred if I recall. Getting some spins around the venues. It is different and in your face. Am dee-jaying in Blackpool in November so may give it an airing again. KTF, Jay

  6. Sorry to hear this. A friend of mine had his collection stolen a few years back. They followed him home. I too nearly had mine stolen in York by a piss-head. Thankfully the box was too heavy for him to run down the street with - fxxxing cxxt!! I would have killed him if I caught him - I get a little possessive at times. Really hope mr Piller gets his tunes back and as all above have said, if I get offered anything I will give you the heads up. ktf, Jay

Fab pics taken by Hogo Platt outside KENNEDY'S WINE BAR, Little Stonegate, York, the venue for "THERE WAS A TIME". You can see York Minster in some of the shots. Brilliant. Thanks to all concerned, Jay Cee

Hi Guys, First of all can I say great post. I am far too young to have been to the Torch, Casino, Mecca etc but do my fair share of travelling to all-nighters and weekenders. Your comments are at the hub of the scene as it stands at the moment. In York, we have a thriving scene with several Northern nights, mine included. Some purely play classics and others play rare and/or underplayed. I try and get a mix especially as I am targetting the un-initiated - everything from 60's R&B to Ultra Modern. But the majority of punters though seem to want to hear 99% classics with the odd newie chucked in. I assume this is a fair reflection of the country as a whole. As many of you have mentioned, they seem to have forgotton why they got into the scene in the first place - wanting to hear something new/different and I suppose be different. But it is understandable. As life goes on circumstances and people change - work, marriage, kids, mortgage etc. I suppose people want a release from it all but to tunes they are familiar with. Fairplay. I do fear for the scene and what it will come to represent. How are we going to attract the young folk into the scene who are being suffocated by the mass media bombardment of downloadable disposable pop? How are we going to show that we are different, why our music means so much to us and how that is reflected in our attitude and outlook on life? I believe the scene needs to be a good mix of nostalgia and the pushing forward of new found sounds or underplayed gems. It requires dj's feeling confident that soulies will dance to tunes they have never heard before or not for a long time and for soulies to have the confidence to get up and dancing to tunes they have never heard before, providing the like it. It's gonna be interesting. Cheer's y'all, Jay Cee
  13. I agree. That is why when I set up There Was A Time I invested in a pair of Technics 1210 Mk V's and top of the range Stanton needles as well as a quality PA system and mixer. Not only does the reproduction need to be as good as you can afford, but the equipment needs to be reliable and certainly does not want to be damaging rare vinyl. If I win the lottery I will invest in some laser decks.
  14. I have three Swan cases ( 2 x 100 7" singles and 1 x 80 7" singles). They have butterfly catches and you can padlock them. They are very very robust and will protect your investments for a very long time. They have rounded protectors on the corner. They have foam padding on the inside to protect the singles. They also look very professional and look like you mean business when you get behind the decks. You can call Swan direct on this number: 01740 623555. I thoroughly recommend them. Cheers, Jay
