New Release: Mica Millar 'Heaven Knows' Album on Limited Edition 12" Double Vinyl & CD

Already fiercely championed by a slew of highly esteemed collaborators and soul tastemakers across the UK and US, independent, Soul newcomer Mica Millar’s debut album 'Heaven Knows' was released in June 2022.
The album is self-written, arranged and produced with inspiration drawn from a plethora of vintage soundscapes, notably, soul, blues, gospel and jazz. Respectful nods are paid to girl groups of the 60's and 70's and classic Soul, giving these songs a timeless quality that is both reassuringly familiar yet distinctively Mica Millar.
In a creative pursuit that has spanned almost three years, 'Heaven Knows' finds Mica exploring themes of human nature, spirituality, love, oppression, inequality and empowerment.
Notably, the fourteen track debut has been mixed by multi-platinum Producer/Engineer Brian Malouf, known for engineering Michael Jackson’s Bad album and working with Motown legend Stevie Wonder amongst many other Grammy award-winning works. Completing mixing sessions with Mica via Zoom from his state of the art studio facility in LA, Malouf credits Mica as a talent that is “every engineer’s dream” with a clear vision and outstanding songs and vocals, likening her production approach on album track “Flashlights” to that of Quincey Jones.
Amongst those also credited on ‘Heaven Knows’ are esteemed bassist, Jerry Barnes (Whitney Houston, Nile Rodgers, Chic) who adds his signature bass sound to single ‘Preacher Man’, Bobby Sparks (Snarky Puppy), Vince Chiarato (Black Pumas), Ricky Peterson (Prince, Fleetwood Mac), Brandon Rose (Marcus Miller), Miles James (Michael Kiwanuka, Tom Misch, Cleo Soul) and David Z Rivkin (A producer/engineer/arranger on Prince’s album “Purple Rain” and long standing collaborator of Etta James). Rivkin is credited as an additional arranger on album track, ‘Fool’s Fate’.
Recorded between Manchester, Devon, New York, Minneapolis, Nashville, LA and other locations across the US and Mastered at the iconic Abbey Road Studios, Mastering Engineer, Geoff Pesche (Tina Turner, Adele), cites 'Heaven Knows' as the the best project he's worked on at Abbey Road Studios in 2021 and predicts Mica will be “the most exciting new artist releasing music in 2022”.

Atlanta Soul Artistry 1965-1975 - New Kent Vinyl Lp

Atlanta Soul Artistry 1965-1975 - Various Artists (Hotlanta/ GMG)
A new vinyl lp release from Kent Records
'This album is a great overview of the musicians’ and singers’ work – the cream of Atlanta Soul'
Release Notes Clip
Though built with highly questionable finances, gangster Michael Thevis’ GRC, Aware and Hotlanta labels produced some scintillating mid-70s soul music. Thevis knew his limitations and allowed his producers, arrangers and songwriters free reign as long as they worked hard and came up with good recordings. It was the period in music when Detroit and the south got together, as with Stax and Westbound’s Memphis/Detroit co-productions, and Thevis tried to make that blueprint work for his Atlanta set-up. He brought producer Marlin McNichols and engineer Milan Bogdan down from the Motor City and Floyd Smith from Chicago. Smith came with the highly talented singers Loleatta Holloway and John Edwards, while McNichols brought the Counts, Ripple and Deep Velvet to cut in the spanking brand-new Sound Pit Studios. Songwriter supreme Sam Dees was co-opted from Thevis’ Moonsong operation, which he ran out of nearby Birmingham, Alabama, and the resulting sessions produced some exquisite soul songs – several of which charted, making the company hot between 1973 and 1975.
Kent and BGP have featured this hugely impressive catalogue for nearly 30 years. This album is a great overview of the musicians’ and singers’ work – the cream of Atlanta Soul.

Two New Releases From Soul Direction - July 2022

Father’s Children – Everybody’s Got a Problem / In Shallah – Soul Direction SD-010
The Universal Togetherness Band – I Want You / Call For Love - Soul Direction SD-012
Release Date – Pre Order now for delivery W/C - 11th July 2022
Father’s Children – Everybody’s Got a Problem / In Shallah
Mastered for vinyl from the original master tapes. Recorded around 1972, these tracks were a result of Band Manager Robert Hosea Williams who had the foresight to preserve the master tapes from those early sessions and these masterful tracks were released on a 2011 Numero LP.
Permission was given for Soul Direction to Master these two tracks from the original master tapes. Soul Direction have made this release a Double AA Side and the reason is clear. “Everybody’s Got a Problem” having a powerful message about political conflict surrounding the Nixon administration and “In Shallah” having the Arabic translation of if “Allah wills” or “God willing” it’s clear the bands influences and beliefs but is celebrated in strong vocals and sublime harmonies respectively and for that reason each side is celebrated equally.
Hailing from Washington DC, the original members Nick Smith, Billy Sumler and Ted ‘Skeet’ Carpenter started like most, a street corner doo wop trio but after Jackie Peoples joined, they soon became a tight quartet. After a few high school dances and local talent shows they got a backing gig with Frankie Karl and became “The Dreams”. Frankie would go on to keep the name and put another band together called The Dreams. The guys were very much against the Vietnam War and would try to protest it through their brand of fine soulful harmonies. Eventually they were helped along by Norman Hylton and Larry Bell (Formerly of the Argo famed Carlton’s) who had set up ‘Pure Street Production’ a management company for up-and-coming hopefuls as part of an economic development grant. Hylton took a real shine to the band but he also wanted to add to the group to make a larger ensemble, so he tasked the band with adding new talent. Bassist Michael Rogers and Drummer Donald Radcliff were added, and later guitarist Steve “Tai” Woods was recruited, eventually Zachary Long would replace Radcliff. After several spiritual experiences Hylton, who was already a convert to Islam helped them transgress to the fold and there the “Father’s Children” were born, and the “Dreams” were no more. In 1972, Saleem (Formerly Hylton) was introduced to studio magnate Robert Hosea Williams, who owned several small studios and worked with Gil Scott Heron and Van McCoy. Hylton decided to pass the band over to ‘Fly Enterprises’ who would hopefully drive the band to better things. They already had the tracks “Everybody’s Got a Problem” and later that year added “In Shallah” which are the two tracks on this release.
These tracks and others allowed them to tour to Texas and as far afield as Bermuda before eventually returning to DC. Eventually in 1976 Fly Enterprises went bust with no funds to pay for the master tapes of the bands recordings Robert Hosea Williams took the masters adding them to his portfolio. The band were in the musical wilderness for a year or two with members trying to pursue personal projects which sadly never really ended up coming to much. A strange but chance meet with a guy named ‘Raheem’ and under the guise of a band member managed to get the band signed to Mercury Records which led to their 1979 self-titled Album release. With a few members being replaced they released the single “Hollywood Dreaming” bw “Shine On” which failed to chart and ultimately led to Mercury pulling the plug on their short-lived career. The band slowly dissolved with some of the group staying lifelong friends as they had previously. In 2005 the group reformed and released a self-funded album titled “Sky’s The Limit” for a brief chance of the limelight. Luckily Robert Hosea Williams had the foresight to preserve the master tapes from those early sessions and these masterful tracks were released on a 2011 Numero LP from which these 2 tracks were lifted for a 7” release.

The Universal Togetherness Band – I Want You / Call For Love
Mastered for vinyl from the original master tapes.
These two tracks were recorded between 1979 and 1982 and after Andre began circulating cassette tapes of the band’s material (most of which were written by Andre) they were finally given the light of day by The Numero Group in 2014.
Soul Direction have been given permission to master these tracks for 7” vinyl from the original master tapes. The songs were recorded at Zenith db and Universal Audio in Chicago Illinois and under licence from Andre Gibson & The Numero Group and with the permission of Andre Gibson.
The Band:
Andre Gibson – Lead Vocals, Piano & Organ
Arnold Gibson – Drums,
Bass Paul Hanover – Piano, Harmonica & Backing Vocals
Fred Misher – Bass Guitar, Vocals
Leslie Misher – Lead Guitar
Louis Sanford – Percussions Dawn Brooks.
Andre Gibson was born in 1956 in Chicago. His mother from Bessemer AL. was married to Robert Lee Gibson, a labourer at a steel foundry and a fellow southerner hailing from Ashland Mississippi. His first musical experience that would carve his love of music was at the age of six witnessing a performance from the great Jackie Wilson at the Regal Theatre. He would also be shaped by performances from The Temptations & Stevie Wonder to name but a few. Also having many musical artists sharing the same apartment block would leave Andre’s ears ringing from the sounds of Vandy Harris a jazz Saxophonist, but it was his high school maths teacher Artie “Duke” Payne that helped him mature his love of music. Artie was the reedman for Cadet records Odell Brown and the Organ-Izers. Andre then went on to form his own band for a spell, playing talent shows and by the late 60s had recruited his brother. They continued for a while and the family having moved to a larger home to allow for the evergrowing family. He moved to Chicago Vocational School joining the jazz and marching band of this more progressive music-based school. Andre then got more serious and outside of school formed another larger band named “Blue Flame”. The guy’s pooled money together to buy an organ and an amplifier, then later his brother Arnold helped out and later took over the bands managerial duties leaving Andre to graduate in 1973. A few additional members joined the band and they bounced around gigs for a time until Andre married his high school sweetheart Cynthia Tabb in 1977.
Andre then took a job at CBS Musical Instruments in the R&D dept. but also demonstrated the fine instruments at trade shows for the company. He then enrolled at Columbia College where he formed Universal Togetherness Band. They did a few sessions for Malcom Chisholm at Universal/Columbia as it was then around 1979 and with the addition of Dawn Brooks and Louis Stanford completed the band and they recorded the tracks “Ain’t Gonna Cry” & “Taken By Love”. They then went onto various club shows around Illinois and played on the bill with Jerry Butler, Ramsey Lewis and many others. UTB did pretty well in the area and featured on some TV dance shows but ultimately some band members (Notably Louis Stanford & Paul Hanover) left the band and others joined, but in the four years together, they had fun and recorded other tracks alongside the two featured on this release.

New Kent Cd - Bob Crewe's 60s Soul Sounds - CDKEND 508

A new month and a new Cd from Kent arrives. Titled 'Whatever You Want Bob Crewe's 60s Soul Sounds' this latest Kent Cd offers 'an overdue snapshot of his work in the soul field'. If not up to speed with his career, then it may be quite an eye opener.
As always, the cd comes with an informative 16-page glossy leaflet, with photos and notes by Ken Charmer (see below for preview scans)
Release Notes from Ace Records
Most soul fans know Bob Crewe through his 60s pop-soul songs and recordings with Frankie Valli & the 4 Seasons, Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels and his New Voice and Dynovoice labels that teem with hidden gems. Less known are his early songs and productions by such heavyweights of the black music world as Ben E King, Chuck Jackson, Jerry Butler and Barbara Lewis. That follows from his first big success in music, which was with black Brooklyn doo wop combo Hal Miller & the Rays, whom he managed, wrote and produced for. ‘Silhouettes’ by them was a big hit on both the pop and R&B charts in 1957. Crewe clearly loved the R&B sound and penned for Faye Adams, Charlie & Ray, the Bey Sisters and Billy & Lillie in the 50s. He took Hal & the Rays through to the early 60s, when he also wrote and produced soul singers Lenny O’Henry and the High Keys.
Crewe was adept at composing soulful ballads for Hal Miller, Chuck Jackson, Jerry Butler and the like but could also hit a dance groove, as shown by Dee Dee Sharp’s swinging 60s 45 ‘Deep Dark Secret’ / ‘Good’ and the High Keys’ R&B gem ‘Pistol Packin’ Mama’. He wrote groovy numbers for Tracy Dey and Shirley Matthews and an inspired and sublime ‘Pushing A Good Thing Too Far’ for Barbara Lewis.
Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons started out as a street corner vocal group and were steeped in the black music tradition, so they were happy to go along with Bob Crewe for the ride when Motown’s success inspired him to write in that vein. ‘I’m Gonna Change’ was an obscure LP track that got picked up by Northern Soul DJs in the 70s and went massive – in the terminology of the day. Frankie Valli had belatedly charted with his solo billing ‘You’re Ready Now’ in the UK, due to the rare soul scene spins, though his ‘(You’re Gonna) Hurt Yourself’ is arguably the more soulful of the tracks from that mid-60s period. Mitch Ryder fronted a white Detroit rock band whose music was its own genre of tough soul – ‘You Get Your Kicks’ being a high point in teenage angst with an adrenalin-fuelled dance beat. By the mid-60s Crewe’s labels had moved with the times and the slick, rhythmic pop soul sounds of Lainie Hill’s ‘Time Marches On’ and Kenny Wells’ ‘Isn’t It Just A Shame’ reflect that. Crewe was working for many other labels, producing gems such as Lynn Randell’s ‘Stranger In My Arms’ for Columbia and writing ‘Everything Under The Sun’ for revered soul man Walter Jackson at Okeh. In the UK there were excellent covers of his songs by Kenny Lynch and Kiki Dee, while UK band the Soul Mates covered Dey & Knights’ groovy ‘Sayin’ Something’ – we went with the original in this case.

Soul4real : Dionne Warwick & Irma Thomas - New 45s

Another great double-sided soul release from Soul4Real, which will leave you wondering where both these songs have been for the last fifty years...
When Dionne Warwick joined Warner Brothers in 1972 after a decade with Scepter, she ended her long association with Bacharach and David and began working with the finest soul producers of the era – including Holland/Dozier/Holland, Jerry Ragovoy and Thom Bell.
These collaborations led to some of the best albums of Dionne’s career – albums for which more material was recorded than could be included. For that reason, the two incredible mid-70s tracks featured on this essential 45 stayed in the can for almost 40 years, before initially pitching up on CD in 2013.
Happily Soul 4 Real have now paired Ragovoy’s ‘Meant To Be’ and Bell’s ‘I Found Someone Else’ for their first ever vinyl release. The high quality of Dionne’s “Then Came You” and “Track Of The Cat” albums notwithstanding, it’s still astonishing that these tracks were shelved as danceable, radio-friendly soul doesn’t get any better.
Two legendary producers, one legendary singer. What’s not to love?
𝗧𝗼𝗻𝘆 𝗥𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲

The B-side here, “Turn Around And Love You”, has Irma's wonderful honey brown voice working out on this great mid-tempo recorded in Detroit in 1971. “All I Wanna Do Is Save You” is THE side for me though. A great, supremely crafted deep slowie, recorded at Malaco with Wardell Quezergue at the helm, it builds to a giant crescendo with Irma crying out “Save You” at the end of each line.
From the first time I saw Irma singing live in 1981 at her own bar The Lion's Den, I have wanted to ask her one question: “Why don't you just change your title 'The Queen of New Orleans Soul' and have 'The Queen of Soul' instead?”. That will do just nicely for me. After hearing these two originally unissued tracks, I think you will agree with me.

The Up Tights first recorded for Action Records in Memphis as Noble and the Up Tights. The 45 featured an original song by singer, Izear “Ike” Noble Jr. titled “Don't Worry About It.”
Henry Bradley was drafted into Vietnam in 1968. He served in the 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. While he was away, the Up Tights continued with Henry’s brother, Arthur, taking over all the guitar duties. The band also hired a manager named John Mitchell. In 1968, the band met Joe Lee, who owned Variety recording studio in Jonesboro, Arkansas.
For the band’s first recordings at Variety, Lee chose two originals by Noble titled “Look a Little Higher” and an updated version of “Just a Dream” which Lee released on his Alley Records label in 1968. Lee continued to record the band over the next several months. He liked to experiment in the studio and produced many versions of the group’s original songs, adjusting the mix and adding elements to each unique take.
For the group’s second Alley release, they appeared simply as Ike Noble on the record label. Lee brought in a local songwriter named Charles “Jamie” Holmes, who had previously written for Alley records and Joe Keene’s studio in Kennett, Missouri
The resulting 45 from this collaboration was “It’s Bad” backed with “That’s What I Get,” two Holmes originals. Another Holmes original was unreleased at the time, but available here titled “There’s Gonna Be a Better Day Coming.” Stax Records was interested in signing the group and wanted to re-cut "It's Bad" at their studio, but ultimately the label passed since they generally had a policy of working with Memphis based groups.
As the band grew in popularity, they began appearing with and competing with Memphis legends, the Bar-Kays. The group’s biggest show in Arkansas was an opening slot at Barton Coliseum, one of the largest venues in the state, in Little Rock in mid-1969. As a result, the band was offered a spot on George Klein’s “Talent Party” television show on WHBQ in Memphis in July of 1969.....

Pre-release - Con Funk Shun / Jay Cee - Last Bastion Records

Up for pre-release orders today
Label Information and audio follows below
CON FUNK SHUN ‘MOVE ON UP’ / JAY CEE ‘I’VE BEEN THINKING’ (LB03)
Two contrasting, previously unreleased sides, Ltd to 300 (no repress) with picture sleeve
Now available to order here: http://shop.detourrecords.co.uk/CON-FUNK-SHUN-/-JAY-CEE-Move-On-Up-/-Ive-Been-Thinking-7-P/S-NEW

CON FUNK SHUN ‘MOVE ON UP’
The A side is exclusively licenced from Con Funk Shun, a previously unreleased recording. (The only other release was an album length version on Con Funk Shuns’ 2015 ‘More than love’ cd).
Con Funk Shun signed to Mercury Records in 1976 and almost instantly became one of the most successful and prolific North American Soul n Funk artists of that generation. Today their US hits also feature in charts worldwide via countless rap/hip-hop samples drawing in a whole new generation. With sellout live performances (featuring original members, co founder Michael Cooper, Felton Pilate and Rev. Karl Fuller) and recent recordings including the highly acclaimed ‘More than love’ cd release, their popularity continues today. A 32 track greatest hits compilation, ‘Con Funk Shun - Con-funkshunizeya (The Mercury Anthology)’ was released in 2020. Con Funk Shun's music is also soundtracks of films including ‘Gone In 60 Seconds’, ‘Next Friday’, and ‘American Pimp’, which was featured at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival.
Against that background, Andy Bellwood of Last Bastion Records explains “with 11 chart albums (one Platinum, four Gold) and 20 hit singles (eight top 10 RnB chart, one No.1) in the US, it’s still hard for me to comprehend that the 3rd release on Last Bastion Records is from these soul & funk legends. David & Goliath comes to mind, after all it’s a small indie label which only came into existence last year and operates out of a converted donkey stable in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park!”
CON FUNK SHUN ‘MOVE ON UP’ VIDEO

JAY CEE ‘I’VE BEEN THINKING'
‘The Jay Cee track additionally delivered another label aspiration, a new artist release.’
‘Move on Up' was recorded in 2014 at The Soundform studios, California and it’s already an in demand, pre release, requested sound in dj sets and radio shows via an acetate & test presses. It’s the sound of New Orleans and the Louisiana swamps blending that Zyedeco beat with an accordion/squeeze box and Con Funk Shuns’ formidable horn section. The result; a unique and infectious arrangement - a dance groove which doesn't diminish the socially conscious lyrics which would surely have Curtis smiling. …
”this is music that could get the most reticent of dancers itching to get out on the floor – and that is pure magic…” Ian Cantley (MorethanWar.com) On the B side, it’s Nu-Soul with 'I've been thinking' (lightly sampling a Northern Soul/Popcorn classic) and first heard to rave reviews as a rough mix via an acetate on the dj decks of Yorks' Waterfront Blues and Soul Club sessions in 2016 where Jay was one of the resident djs. It’s also now the soundtrack to a short film produced by Connor Blackburn at Blackburn Films.

REVIEWS
“Con Funk Shun sprinkle a helping of Cajun spice across their tasty re-working of 'Move on Up'. York based Jay Cee showcases his Nu-Soul talent on 'I've Been Thinking', his debut release. You shouldn't need to, err, 'think it over twice to define the sample. High quality, on both contrastingly different, sides, another Last Bastion winner.”
Mark 'Sarge' Sargeant (Scootering Magazine and Rare Soul DJ )
“Con Funk Shuns 'Move on Up' is the perfect example of the under ground soul scenes’ acceptance of an alternative musical formula. A hint of Caging, a perfect vocal delivery and a musical amalgamation that is set to be a new classic.”
Simon Hunt (Rare Soul /Northern Soul DJ & record dealer)
“While looking to cover a song from the 70's, we could think of nothing better then to call on master Curtis Mayfield’s song of awareness. With our love of Zydeco, New Orleans and Louisiana, we wanted to shake things up a bit with the old squeezebox.”
Michael Cooper (Con Funk Shun)
“WOWZER! BRILLIANT Supercharged, pumped up funky driving punchy attitude dance floor detonator and sure to shake the dancefloors and will most definitely be in my DJ box.”
Sean Chapman (Northern Soul & Mod DJ, collector & Chapman Records)
“Con Funk Shuns’ ‘Move on up‘ a great, must have, upbeat dancer and a fabulous alternative to one of the all time soul classics.”
Ray ‘Ginger’ Taylor (The Worlds’ No.1 Northern Soul DJ)

HR 1540 THE COMPACTS – Why Can’t It Be / That’s How My World Began
After over 2 years in the negotiating, the first of a series of masters from the much respected Ollie McLaughlin catalogue from Detroit. This is a wonderful male vocal group offering, originally on Carla in 1973, many of the US copies suffered from bad pressing making it even rarer. A double-header of what once would have been termed beat ballads and now sound perfect for today’s dance scene and chill-out sessions. Already in-demand both sides of the Atlantic. Totally, totally infectious and brilliant.

RIP Sean Adams 6t’s Member 001 Skinhead Sean Southgate N14 Gofundme for Funeral expenses

Very sad news to report of the sudden death of Sean Adams, the original 6t’s member 001 and who famously adorned the cover of Too Darn Soulful and Soul Galore.
Sean was a massive character, great loyal friend to many, a complete one off who’s real family was the soul crowd he devoted himself too. Leaned the trade of roofing off his bestie Randy Cozens in the mid 70s and was well known for his tattooed tanned body, unique style and dress sense, dance moves and passion for the soul scene.
We want to lay him in rest but he passed suddenly recently and was living out of his van in Southgate his home for many years.
Please help us send Sean off in style by contributing where possible to our gofundme page at

Secret History of Chicago Music - Barbara Livsey

The Chicago Readers 'Secret History of Chicago Music' series of articles by Steve Krakow takes a look at Barbara Livsey
Barbara Livsey was born May 27, 1946, in Atlanta, Georgia, and around 1958 her family moved to Chicago, where she attended Parker Academy on the south side. In high school Livsey (also known as Barbara Bates) took music classes and formed her first group, the Du-Ettes, with her cousin....

New Ebook - The Heeey Baby Days Of Beach Music

Word just in about a new Ebook version of 'The Heeey Baby Days Of Beach Music', details follow below
Greg Haynes’ massive 13 pound book—THE HEEEY BABY DAYS OF BEACH MUSIC-- chronicling stories of the bands, venues and times that were the late 1960s is now available as an eBook!  It is available through Ebay see belwo for the link
First published in hardback in 2006, the coffee-table sized book has been out of print since 2009.  The thumb drive version contains a new Epilogue that lists the later released CDs 15-17 as bonus content.  The eBook contains 557 pages and over 800 photographs.
In late 2001, after spending over 30 years reminiscing about those few years he had as a band promoter in the late 1960s, Greg Haynes realized that if someone didn't make a permanent record of the unforgettable music, times, and events of those days in the Southeast, the memories would be lost forever. What started as a book to highlight the most popular bands ended up including groups that made the Beach Music genre a significant music form. By the time Greg wrapped up The Heeey Baby Days of Beach Music, every state in the Southeast that had a shoreline was in the book. Greg's retrospective, he says, "is not be a complete anthology of the party bands of the South in the '60s; but I believe we have achieved a fantastic overview of the most significant acts of the era and many of the lesser-known acts as well."
The complete eBook on a handy USB thumb drive via First Class U.S. Mail for $29.95 +$3.19 postage and handling. You can now re-live the memories and see all the valuable (and now, many long-lost) images of the era on your laptop, computer, or tablet.

Coming Soon from MD Records Group

MD Records - New releases from The Pioneer Vaults & Al Lindsey
Well, nearly halfway through 2022, covid is still a thing and is spreading but thankfully not as destructive as the first few times around. There is war in Europe and Brexit has made it more difficult for both refugees and supplies to move around. So overall 2022 is another year for the diary of the unexpected.
We thought it was worth sharing the next batch of releases that are coming due and will hopefully be starting to land as you read this article. But before that I think it is worth carrying on with some more of the Pioneer story and who is doing what in MD Records.
Many of you will know that the label was originally conceived by Mark and Des, but from the very beginning it was planned to involve other people as we wanted to make sure we brought the best people we could find to the collective, delivering the best finished article we can to those who support us and the artists, studios, and writers.
So, behind the collective banner we have Jordan Wilson – who I have no doubt many of you will know. Jordan, like us all is involved with many parts of the business. His key focus though is researching and tracking down artists, label owners and studios for us to work with along with archiving the history. On top of this he is very much a communications guy, speaking with the people we deal with on a regular basis and working alongside of our label and sleeve graphics guy to produce designs and creating his own designs like the Pioneer cards for the unreleased track 45s on our yellow label.
Rich is our lead graphics guy and is instrumental in our label designs and picture sleeves. His lifetime of working in the graphic art industry and his passionate background as an artist has kept us to a standard of quality that has seen many conversations late into the night on colours to make sure we get it right. His designs are so good that he has even had awards won by some of his sleeve designs.
On the Technical side is Thomas and William @TW24, they are the architects of our website and e-commerce systems. Both have a passion for music, with William even producing his own music. Both have been big supporters of the business and were very keen to get involved right at the start.
Of course as we mentioned in the last article, we also have Kevin Fingier of Fingier records on board for his mixing and restoration skills and his overall musicality, Kevin has brought the projects we do to another level and has fantastic enthusiasm for the music we dig out.
Back to the next releases.
Following on from the work that was initiated by Jordan on the Pioneer project, we have the next 4 releases in pressing and due May/June 2022. On top of that we also have the next release on our Gold label which is the contemporary soul label.
On that subject it was interesting to see some comments recently about re-issues and how its not always apparent that a new release is a re-issue. Well on our label all of the Black Tops are re-issues, the yellows are previously unreleased and the Gold is the contemporary music. So easy to know what you are getting when you buy one of our singles.
We believe that there is a place for them in our catalogue and we try to bring re-issues to you all that we feel add something, we fully appreciate and understand that they are not everyone’s cup of tea, but for many they are a way to own the music, and by ensuring that it is done properly and rights owners are paid their dues along with artists, then we think they have a place for many people.
In terms of the Pioneer project it also helps us to spread the costs of all of the digitising, restoring and remastering the tapes so that we can bring the unreleased gems like the Sensations and New Loves to you all.

Al Lindsey – Only You. MDRE003
Al is bringing the modern rare soul grove back to MD records with the title track. This is dedicated to his son Allen who sadly passed away in 2021. Al has thrown himself into his music and we think is coming back strongly with this release. He is looking to plan a trip to the UK to play some dates, but still in the planning stages at the moment so we can share anything yet.
Only You showcases Al’s distinctive voice, highlighted by the great backing vocals and smooth melody. On its digital release in March 2022, it went straight into the UK Soul charts at number 21 having been picked up and played on numerous terrestrial and internet radio stations.
Flip it over and Al treats us to his working of a classic song, Ma Na Na by Ollie Woodson of the temptations. It certainly delivers a brilliant reworking that firmly puts this as a contender for the modern rooms and chillout sets.
Next up are a pair of classic tracks re-issued having been remastered directly from the original master tapes.
On this subject it was interesting to see some comments recently about re-issues and how its not always apparent that a new release is a re-issue. Well on our label all of the Black Tops are re-issues, the yellows are previously unreleased, and the Gold is the contemporary soul music. So easy to know what you are getting when you buy one of our singles.
We believe that there is a place for re-issues in our catalogue and we try to bring records to you all that we feel add something. We fully appreciate and understand that they are not everyone’s cup of tea, but for many they are a way to own the music, and by ensuring that it is done properly, and rights owners are paid their dues along with artists, then we think they have a place for many people.
In terms of the Pioneer project, it also helps us to spread the costs of the whole project of the digitising, restoring and remastering the tapes so that we can bring the unreleased gems like the Sensations and New Loves to you all.
So first up on the Black tops is;

Jock Mitchell – No Mad Woman. MDJW004
Originally released on Jocks Golden Hit Productions label out of Detroit, this track has always had questions around it. Is it meant to be No mad woman or Nomad woman? Well listen to the lyrics and make your own mind up. During our conversations Little Jake – Jocks current stage name – and his manager Charles explained that it was meant to be Nomad woman – bit of a clue in the lyrics when Jock sings of a woman of the desert sands.

The reason that the Golden Hit released James Barnes and then Jock’s version of Free at last, was purely because Jock couldn’t get the sound, he wanted, on the James Barnes one.
So why have we done a re-issue on our black top label? Well firstly why not, many of the original Jock Mitchell copies have a hiss from a production faut in the pressing. Landing the masters from the Pioneer studio project gave us an opportunity to have the songs freshened up by JJ at Golden Mastering who really digs the soul sound, more so having worked for Daptone on all their production.
Historically it allowed us to fill in some blanks on the tracks, especially that they were recorded at Pioneer. It also gave us a chance to speak to Little Jake and to come to an agreement to ensure he received royalties on the tracks release. This guy is still out there singing his heart out for audiences in the US. Little Jake also explained he lost the master copies he had years ago, so we have been able to arrange to get him a set of digital masters. Luckily Gary had archived his tapes and kept copies.
Both Nomad woman and Free at Last have been digitised direct from the tapes and then been remastered to ensure the very best sound on modern pressing technology.

Gambrells – Jive talk. MDJW005
Pat, Sharon and Sandra are all still well and healthy and could not believe it when Jordan got in contact over us finding their songs, including the New Loves takes in the Pioneer tapes. The excitement they had in being reconnected to Gary and their music, being able to share it with their children and grandchildren has been great to see. Jordan got sent a video of Sharon and Sandra singing and dancing with their families which is brilliant to watch. You may have seen some of the photos on social media when the girls received copies of their songs recorded over fifty years ago.
Like our other releases on the black top label, the opportunity to bring freshly remastered copies of what is turning out to be a difficult 45 to acquire and the price is rising quickly due to its rise in popularity, really meant it was not a difficult choice. More so given that the artists will be benefitting from the increased exposure and sales.
So, in all its remastered and refreshed glory, including a picture sleeve with background notes by Jordan from his interviews with the girls, we are please to present the 5th release on our black top series.
As we mentioned earlier, the sales of all our releases benefit the copyright owners and artists and go towards the cost of projects such as the Pioneer tapes. Not all the tapes contain songs, or songs that are releasable. For example, we are currently wondering what to do with an interview with Pete Townsend, where he talks about the Who’s tour of the US promoting the Tommy Album. This was recorded just ahead of them kicking of the Tour with a three-night Detroit gig in 1969.
Next up are four more unreleased masters from the Pioneer tapes. Now these two 45s are absolutely stonking and provide more missing pieces of the Detroit music scene back in the late 60s and early 70s.
Imagine the surprise when Jordan starts going on and on about tapes marked up with the Tomangoes and James Lately. Two iconic names from the rare and northern soul scene that is littered with many hugely influential tracks. To say that the wait to get the tracks digitised to hear the contents was agonising would be an understatement of massive proportion.

Tomangoes ft the Gambrells – Loves Got A Hold On Me. MD119
What is there to say about this release, well firstly what a surprise to find it in the tapes owned by the Pioneer Studio, and Tru Soul Publishing. The surprises kept coming when we discovered that not only did the tape have an unreleased song Loves got a hold on me, but also an alternate take of Since you’ve been gone.
The next surprise was that the Gambrells were providing the backing on both tracks, this came out of a conversation with Gary when he explained that he originally signed the girls to the studio for both their own songs and to be backing artists for the studio’s clients.
First hearing the master tails was a great and memorable experience and we all agreed that Kevin should hear them and give us his input on getting them mixed. He agreed on how great they were and was thrilled to be able to work on the restoration and mixing of the original tails. Once that was done it was off to JJ for the final mastering for vinyl.
Loves got a hold on me starts with the original studio count in before the band launch into the upbeat brass and keyboard led track, the vocals seal the deal and if you listen you can hear the same inflection in the vocals as ‘I Really Love You’ the upbeat bounce of the track is also very reminiscent of the Washpan outing – I really love you.
Flip it over for a sweet and deep piece of group soul magic in its alternate release version. Again, the Gambrells adding what we consider to be the backbone to the track that the flute could not achieve on the original Washpan B side. This track just oozes soul from every note and is rightly deserving of its place in our release catalogue.
We could go on about how sublime the releases are, or that they are seminal finds in the history of Northern Soul – but that’s not our style. We are excited by the finds and to be able to bring them to vinyl for the first time so others can share in the excitement of listening and playing these tracks at home, to friends or out to appreciative crowds.
Just for reference there is more to come from this tape, so keep em peeled.
The second on the MD yellow label for this article is another bomb of a find. I know, its hard to believe and the advertising of many labels leads you on a hyperbolic journey that any politician would be proud of – but make your own mind up by visiting the site and listening for yourself…
But just as a quick recap on the Pioneer project, it has produced so far in 6 releases, The Sensations – Blinded by Pride, the New Loves – Paradise of Love and now the Tomangoes – Loves got a hold on me and James Lately – What you’re doing. I don’t think that we need to add any sales marketing spin to these. They speak for themselves.

James Lately – What you’re doing. MD120
James Lately is mostly known for his rare soul 45 ‘Love, Friends & Money’ b/w ‘Tears Running And Falling In My Eyes’. Co-written with Dave Hamilton, both songs were recorded for Hamilton’s ‘Temple’ label in November 1964.
James – originally born in Georgia – Atlanta in 1937, moved North as part of the mass migration from the South to the North, settling in Mansur Street, Detroit with his parents and 11 siblings. Like many aspiring songwriters and musicians, he worked in the car industry in Detroit – not surprising given it was the hub of motor car production for the USA at that time.
He was also a keen boxer and is rumoured to have got in a fight with Berry Gordy while in School, a move that cost him a career later in his life with Motown.
While James’ Temple release is well loved in the UK, he is better known for being a writer and had a dozen or so titles to his name. He was often partnered with Dave Hamilton for writing and also worked alongside Mike Valvano, Cholly Bassoline and Martin Coleman. So, to find more of his own singing and song writing is pretty historic. Its even better when the tracks are so good and hit the Detroit Northern button.
James died at an early age - 37, leaving behind 7 children. How do we know that, well our very own Sherlock Wilson [Jordan] has done it again. A few people have traced the family previously, but none have managed to illicit responses.
Jordan has been in contact with the youngest daughter of James Lately, who has kindly checked the information with her older brothers and sisters and we will continue to work with them to ensure the story can be told in full.
What you’re doing is a fantastic moody piece of Detroit soul, the rise and fall of the instrumentation creating the presence that is supported by the bass line – the handclap and stripped back feel of this really set it up as a raw slab of street soul. Flip it over for the instrumental which is just as good and stands on its own as an example of great composition.
So, if you loved the Sensations and the New Loves, you cannot afford to miss out on these previously unknown and unreleased Detroit masterpieces. We have no doubt they would have been monster dancefloor tracks if they had of existed before now.
You will see some changes coming to our releases as we have taken a chance to make sure we can bring you the quality 45s you love while maintaining the standards we set ourselves. We continue to look to get better at what we are doing, and this started with bringing other people on board that could add to what we do, improving design, archiving, historical information, picture sleeves, mastering and sound restoration and mixing. So, expect more of the same as we continue to look for like minded souls to drive what we do forwards.
We are also adding some extra features to provide provenance of our singles and will also be adding company sleeves to all releases where we do not have a picture sleeve. So watch this space and thank you all for your continued interest and support in what we are doing.
All the best from the MD Collective.

Book - Acid House As It Happened by Dave Swindells.

Just out, details follow...
Acid House As It Happened by Dave Swindells.
Blurb
'A brilliant title for what is already the definitive unofficial visual history of 1988. Swindells photographed the first Acid nights at Future and Shoom in March ‘88, then Spectrum, Trip, Mutoid Waste Company, events organised (or otherwise) in car parks and bus depots, all throughout that year of seismic change, ending in November with the appropriately named Adrenalin. Dave documented and wrote about it all back then as the nightlife editor of Time Out, and is now re-visiting and re-telling the history of Acid House, as it happened, in his own words, and of course photographs. It’s a fast ride.'
Introduction by Sheryl Garrett. Further texts by Dave Swindells.
Hardcover. 30 x 23.5cm. 192 pages.

Bobby Oroza - Get On The Otherside - New Album

Bobby Oroza. His sophomore album, Get On The Otherside, is out worldwide today.
Get On The Otherside updates the soulful musical formula that Bobby introduced on his first record, This Love, alongside the production of frequent collaborators Cold Diamond & Mink. Lyrically though, the album steps further into unflinching reflections on himself than he ever has before, after being drawn back into construction work during the pandemic to provide for his family. Confronted with a lack of studio time or tours to play to channel his thoughts into creative output, Bobby turned inward and crafted a record that works through personal truths, disassembles any notions of past ego and presents a refreshed perspective with the same soulful musical backdrop he's always held as part of his identity.

Soul Junction SJ 547 The Entertains "I’ll Answer You With Love" & "Love Will Turn It Around"

Press Release:   The Entertains   “I’ll Answer You With Love/Your Love I Give It Up”   SJ547
Release Date:   Monday June 20TH   2022

The Entertains were a vocal group from Cleveland Ohio whose line up at different times varied between four to five members. Initially signed to Belkin Productions in Cleveland the group were persuaded by Nick Holiday to move to his Pittsburgh Steel Town Records Label. The group had already been working on two songs penned by C-Way Productions Richard Calloway who had strong links with Cleveland through his work with Jesse Fisher and Lester Johnson at Way Out Records.

The two songs in question being “Love Will Turn It Around” and Why Couldn’t I Believe Them”, demo cuts of both songs where touted around to several major labels with 20th Century showing some serious interest, but the owner reputedly turned down 20th Century’s advances and instead chose to release the songs on his own Steel Town Label. Recorded at Jerree’s Studio in New Brighton P.A with the musical arrangements being provided by Don Groton, The Entertains 45 received limited local airplay reputedly due in part to Holiday’s refusal to provide a set of Dining Room furniture for an influential local radio promotion man. Greater radio play was eventually received with “Love Will Turn It Around” gaining air time on WANN, Annapolis Maryland’s largest Black radio station, courtesy of Disc-jockey Charles “Hoppy” Adams. For a time, a popular tune throughout Baltimore, Washington and Delaware without breaking out nationally.

Wider appreciation of the Entertains 45 would come from foreign shores as copies of the 45 found their way in the UK. The effervescent dance side of the 45 “Love Will Turn It Around” was heavily championed by Legendary DJ Colin Curtis and became a firm favourite with the dancers within the Highland Room of the Blackpool Mecca and subsequent Northern Soul venues of the time.  The Entertains line up on the Steel Town sessions where Donald Rice, Howard Rice (the cousin of Donald) Alfred Wilson and Andrew Wright the lead vocalist on all The Entertains songs.

During 1978 Richard Calloway held a second recording session on The Entertains again at Jeree’s Studio’s which yielded a further two songs “I’ll Answer You With Love” and “Your Love I Give It Up” which due to lack of finance at the time of their conception remained in the can. These two songs have now been brought to life through Soul Junction’s licensing deal with C-Way Production’s in the format they originally intended for. The A-side of the release is the emotional charge stepper “I’ll Answer You With Love” with the opening monologue parts been performed by Howard Rice. While the B-side “Your Love I Give It Up” is a punchier up-tempo version of Richie Merrett’s earlier C-Way Records recording “I Gave It Up”, the flipside to “You’ll Always Have Yesterday Standing By” (C-way 103).

In later life Donald Rice would perform with Lonnie Turner Jr a former member of the Detroit groups The Mighty Lovers (Boo-Ga-Loo and Soulhawk) and Innervision (Private Stock and Ariola America) and his daughter Africa Turner in a vocal combo known as The Ambassadors Of Soul, sadly Donald has now passed. It is believed that the other members of The Entertains are still out there performing solo or as members of other different groups.

Two New Soul4Real Releases : Sam Dees and Jimmy Lewis

𝗧𝗪𝗢 𝗡𝗘𝗪 𝗦𝗢𝗨𝗟4𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗟 𝗥𝗘𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗦!
PRE-ORDER NOW FOR 15th JUNE
𝗦𝗔𝗠 𝗗𝗘𝗘𝗦    Where Is The Love / Love Calls (S4R19)
𝗝𝗜𝗠𝗠𝗬 𝗟𝗘𝗪𝗜𝗦    I Can´t Leave You Alone / Don´t Sit Around (S4R20)

Legendary multi-talented soulman Sam Dees made his living not as a performer but as a jobbing songwriter. From his Birmingham, AL base, a stream of demo tapes went to a host of soul stars, but no matter how big they were, all connoisseurs know that the most compelling emotional rendition of a Sam Dees song was his own. And these two long forgotten gems from his most creative period in the late 70s and early 80s are superb resurrections.
The plaintive ballad “Love Calls” was one of three Dees songs covered by Tavares on their fine “Madam Butterfly” LP in 1979, and lead singer Pooch does a fine job for sure – mainly by sensibly sticking close to Sam’s guide vocal. Strangely, the melodic toe-tapper slowie “Where Is The Love” was never picked up for commercial release but Sam’s super double tracked vocal and delicious chorded keyboard playing are simply unstoppable.
Sensational stuff!
𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻 𝗥𝗶𝗱𝗹𝗲𝘆

The year is 1974 and I have taken receipt of Jimmy Lewis’s Hotlanta album “Totally Involved”. My brothers and I lie mesmerised in our soul music haven of a bedroom, drinking in what would soon become a pinnacle of real soul.
Having recently discovered albums by Bobby Womack and Joe Tex, this was their equal. Jimmy’s writing skills had earned him his fame, particularly his work with Ray Charles, but this was his artistic zenith. Cut in LA but sounding like a renegade from Muscle Shoals, soul music history had truly been made.
Jimmy wrote numerous hits for others and continued with his own successful record label “Miss Butch” until his death aged 64 in 2004. The two tracks featured had previously only been available on one of UK Ace records outstanding pair of Lewis’s Hotlanta period compilation CDs and are new to vinyl. Soul 4 Real indeed!!

'Sugar Shack' painting, cover of Marvin Gaye's 'I Want You' sells for $15 million

Ernie Barnes’s most famous painting, “The Sugar Shack,” an exultant dancing scene that was featured on the cover of Marvin Gaye’s album “I Want You” and during the closing credits of the TV sitcom “Good Times,” sold for $15.3 million at Christie’s 20th Century auction on Thursday evening (March 12).
Another of Barnes’ paintings, “Ballroom Soul” was used as the cover for Faith Hope & Charity’s self-titled 1978 album.  Barnes, a well-known Black artist who passed away in 2009, later did the art for several posters for the 1984 Olympics..

New Cd - William Bell - Never Like This Before - Kent Cd - Out 27 May 2022

Details of a fine CD release from Kent records
Willian Bell - Never Like This Before - The Complete 'Blue' Stax Singles 1961-1968
Due out at the end of this month, info below...

Preview of the release notes by Tony Rounce
Iconic veteran Southern soul man William Bell has been in the business of making records for 66 years, and was with Memphis’ fabled Stax label for virtually its entire 15-year existence (1960-1975). In that time, he composed and recorded many songs that are rightly regarded as classics, from his Stax debut ‘You Don’t Miss Your Water’ to the classic blues song ‘Born Under A Bad Sign’ to his hit duet with Judy Clay, ‘Private Number’.
Ace Records has represented William’s Stax catalogue in the UK for longer than the label originally existed, and we have issued a number of CDs over the years, including original albums and “Best Of” packages, but this month sees the release of the first of two CD sets that will, between them, anthologise the A and B-sides all of William’s solo singles for Stax.
“Never Like This Before” covers the first seven years of William’s Stax catalogue, and rounds up all 14 of the singles that came out on Stax’s original blue label design with the ‘Stack Of Records’....

New 45 - Soul Direction - Helene Smith

Soul Direction has a new addition to their 'Origins' imprint, due out on the 9th May 2022, details and audio below
Helene Smith - The Pot Can't Talk About The Kettle / Gossip Don't Worry Me - Soul-Direction SDO-1005
Sleeve Notes
Regarded as Miami’s First Lady of Soul this talented performer recorded for Lloyd, Deep City, Phil L.A. Of Soul, Dash, and Dade labels.
The two tracks in question were believed to be her first recording on the Blue Star label around 1964. Written by Willie Clarke and arranged by Arnold Albury, this 45 was Issued with a quantity of only 300 copies and has remained extremely rare. Soul Direction Records believe this Re Release will give it the exposure and popularity it truly deserves. #
My story with this 45 started in the eighties after picking up a copy in the USA, albeit a pretty beaten up copy and was covered up in the true Northern soul style of the day but played very little due to it’s condition. I managed to purchase a better copy in the nineties and at that time still remained very obscure and certainly much unheard. Since then it has gained some exposure due to the “Eccentric Soul” series from The Numero Group covering all the Deep City and related catalogues. Helene Smith was not only the first artist to record for Clarke-Pearsall Productions, Miami’s first independent black production company, she was also the only artist on Miami’s Deep City label to record a full[1]length LP entitled “Sing’s Sweet Soul” which again commands a high price due to it’s rarity.
Helene met Johnny Pearsall, who was looking to become a teacher and was friends with Willie Clarke from school days. He had financed a record for a local Tallahassee group with a loan from his mother and eventually teamed with Clarke, and Albury with what would become Deep City Records. Helene and Johnny were married when she was 23, after most of her Phil-LA of Soul recordings were released.
They continued to live in Miami and had one daughter, who became a lawyer. Johnny Pearsall also owned a record store in Miami and continued to work with music until his untimely death. Helene Smith carried on his mission working with children and herself became a teacher in the Miami school district, teaching first graders. Helene is currently still performing and recording when she can. She was and still remains a superlative artist and her recordings for all the above labels are still as good as anything played on or around the soul scene.

The next 45 release from One World Records is due soon... read and listen below

THE FREEDOM AFFAIR - Give A Little Love/ Searching - OSP 5009
Release date: 20 May 2022

The soulful 'Give A Little Love' is the second UK single by nine-piece Kansas City soul group The Freedom Affair who received huge critical acclaim last year with their debut album, Freedom Is Love.

The 7" single is due for release on One World Records on 20 May and is expected to repeat the success of their previous single, 'Outta My Mind', which sold well and got strong radio support in the UK and overseas.

'Give A Little Love' is now being serviced to club and radio DJs by hit plugger Steve Ripley who handles promotion for One World Records and its sister label, Shotgun Records.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Continuing with the theme of finding and releasing quality 21st century CD-only tracks on to 7” vinyl, Jai Alai now are proud to present their fourth release which showcases the stand-out tracks from the only two albums released under the name Sir Wick.
Chad ’Sir Wick’ Hughes is probably best described as a musician (trombone, piano, percussion), composer, teacher, adjudicator and clinician, but somehow that doesn’t seem quite enough to describe such a unique musical talent. Born in Detroit, and graduating from the same High School as Diana Ross, Paul Thompson, & Ron Carter, he went on to study composition and arranging, and holds regular clinics around the north and mid-west US states sharing his expertise.
The topside on this limited edition release is the lead track from his debut album “An Interpretation Of A Universal Language” (2007 Sir Wick Entertainment LLC) which features the sublime vocals of Sedalia Marie, a beautiful mid-pacer, whilst the other side “I Love You” features the mellow vocals of Anthony Saunders on a track from Chad’s opus work “A Tale Of Two Fools”, which he began in 1996 but only finally orchestrated and released as his second album in 2017 - a soundtrack featuring a full orchestra comprising eight woodwind parts, full strings, big band brass, and seven-piece rhythm section.
Originally intended as an operetta, it was evolving into something bigger; an opera, musical or stage play maybe, but he finally referred to it as a ‘novical’ (a musical novel), which best describes this story of a young musician falling in love for the first time. A biopic, maybe?
One could easily take these two fabulous tracks at face value as simply just another great double-sider, but isn’t it nicer to know the full story?
Steve Hobbs (Solar Radio, Totally Wired Radio)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jai Alai is different from sister label Soul4Real in that this imprint focuses on 21st century releases that were either CD only, or totally missed, and there is a very exciting programme of future releases already lined up. But before we get into my favourite release so far, the correct pronunciation of the label is “hi-uh-lie” which is a Basque version of the court ballgame pelota - no more mis-pronunciations please!
It would be fair to say that we could have done with a few more releases from this immensely talented “Songbird Of Love” over the years, but maybe your purchase might help that. I fell in love with her voice on the wonderful stepper “I’ll Always Be A Part Of You”, released on the short-lived New York label 1800 Records in 1986, so I was surprised to learn that Elaine was Los Angeles born and bred, particularly as her 1990 follow up dancer “The Sweetness Of Your Love” was on Miami label Never Stop Productions, which further enhanced her underground following in the UK & European soul scenes.
In 1993 her “Good Love” was included on the Meteor Man film soundtrack (starring amongst others, Luther Vandross), but it would be a while before she returned to the studios having toured as background then lead singer in Rose Royce from 1997-2007.
She finally released her own CD album “The Woman I Am” on Eee Project in 2007, from which these two killer cuts have been released for the first time on vinyl: “Come See About Me” is an infectious floor-filler pitched just below mid-pace, but “What Am I To Do” is the most sublime kneetrembler, taking you straight to a late night smoky jazz room with Ella or Billie on stage. Worth it for this side alone.
Steve Hobbs (Solar Radio, Totally Wired Radio)

It's That Time Again - Two News HR 45 Releases

HR 1538 - SOUL MEDITATIONS – Someone To Hold Me / The Bird
Collectors of the Ovide label from Houston Texas will know this to be ridiculously rare and one of the best 45s on the label. Cut in 1967 with Skipper Lee Frazier producing, it’s the kind of tough-to-find and semi-unknown we like to bring back to life on the label. Wonderful male vocal group midpacer of the kind that’s really popular with the chill-out sessions at the moment and sure to be popular with our Chicano California collectors circle.

HR 1539 GEORGE SCOTT : I’m A Fool For You + Let The Past Be The Past  / Why Is It Taking So Long
His cult-collectable Johnny Brantley New Jersey produced 1971 Maple LP was reissued in 2015 but there has never been a 45 of any of the tracks – so this bonus 3 track 45/EP is fully OVO compliant.
Two wonderful ballads on the A side including one with 3 million youtube plays – these both will get big plays in the US and on the midtempo chill-out room dancefloors of the UK; the flip here is the lesser known version of the Crossover dancer also cut by Johnny Brantley on Nate Adams and Tony Baxter and is a pretty good number in it’s own right..
£12 each + £3 postage (good for 1-3 records)     paypal – hitandrunsoul45@gmail.com

New 45 - Soul Direction - Norman Feels - Don't (alt) / More Love - Out May 2022

Latest word from Soul Direction, a new release featuring 2 x previous unreleased tracks...
Soul Direction are pleased to announce the next release in the catalogue.
SD-009 - Norman Feels - "Don't"- (Original Edit)/ "More Love" - (Soul Direction)
Scheduled Release Date - May 2022

Little is known about Norman Feels (AKA Norman Solomon) other than he was an underground soul singer in the first half of the 1970s. Norman Feels released two albums on Just Sunshine Records and seemingly then disappeared back into obscurity but leaving us with some wonderful music.
In 1973 he released a self-Titled album and in 1974 the album entitled "Where or When" However, these two tracks were recorded a year earlier in 1972, we believe in Detroit but mastered at Sterling sound studios in New York but cannot be 100% sure.
This might explain the fact that "Don't" is a different mix to the later LP and "More Love" never saw a release.
"Don't" is a different and much punchier version of the Album track and could have presumably been recorded as a possible 45 release for another label but was shelved.
The B side "More Love" as far as we can tell never saw the light of day other than these acetates that were purchased via a sound engineer from the studios much later.
Over the years the songs from his albums have been sampled by famous acts such as Ghostface Killah, to Nas and Kanye West.

Book - I'll Be There: My Life with the Four Tops - Duke Fakir

A new book by Duke Fakir is due out next month in kindle and hardback versions...
Details follow below, the kindle preview should show once the book has been released
I'll Be There: My Life with the Four Tops  By Duke Fakir with Kathleen McGhee Anderson
Spanning over decades, this is the remarkable, heartfelt memoir from Abdul ‘Duke’ Fakir, the last surviving member of The Four Tops. Amidst a backdrop of Detroit, I’ll Be There features revealing anecdotes from the group’s formation, their early days as backup singers for the likes of Jackie Wilson, and their years working with Berry Gordy at the legendary Motown Records. With era-defining number ones like ‘I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)’ and ‘Reach Out I’ll Be There’ came stardom and also a more enduring reward: the love of four men who become tighter than brothers. Together they comprise one of the most celebrated R&B groups of all time. But remarkable musical success didn’t spare Fakir the pain of marital distress, soured investment deals, struggles with sobriety and the sudden loss of his brothers, all of which he covers in this confessional, unmissable book.

Book - Coronation Baby, Council House Kid, The 1970s: A Soulcial History

Recently had word passed on regarding a book that may be of interest to members of a certain age or outlook...
Coronation Baby, Council House Kid, The 1970s: A Soulcial History
'a social/urban history for those who were there',
The 1950s hailed a rapid change and a bright future for many, an exciting new Elizabethan age with over a million new council homes built for returning soldiers and those in need, for their new and growing families. Prime Minister Harold Macmillan proclaimed 'Our people have never had it so good....', but for one young family it wasn't so easy. This story covers one mother's attempt to raise two boys virtually single handed over the next twenty years, it focuses on the youngest son and older brother's influence of fashion, especially R&B and soul music through the colourful 'Swingin' Sixty's' in a rural Surrey village, just ten miles from Charing Cross. A story that will take you through his childhood, state schooling and into the workplace while hanging out in the shops, bars and music clubs of the suburbs and London's West End, a journey many experienced in the 1970s.

Available now in both paperback and kindle editions

Funk Junction Band Members
James Greene, Fred Ross, Tony Rodrigues and Alan Ross played and sang on “Let’s Try It Again”.
James Greene, Fred Ross, Alan Ross, Preston Delaney sang and played on “What Will I Be”.
Back in October 2020 during the lockdown Steve Green & I were doing extensive research on an amazing and ultra obscured sweet soul 45 that was released on Fos-Glo record by a band called "JUNCTION".
After a few days of investigation, I managed to find James Green, one of the original members, who turned out to be the actual songwriter of "Let's Try It Again" in 1980. We were finally making progress!
James Green kindly redirected us to his friend
Warren Foster, the manager of "Funk Junction" the band's real name and owner of Fos-Glo Records.
I soon realised that I was talking to a big guy in the music business in the San Francisco Bay area.
Warren Foster managed & produced phenomenal bands and artists like The Windjammers aka Masterplan, Little Stanley, Bill Griffith, Butch Tavares & Tavares Brothers, Con Funk Shun, Lenny Williams to name few.
Warren's knowledge is just astonishing, he knows everyone in the music world and he is still very much involved in the music business. I am hoping one day he will write a book.
After nearly a year of negotiations, I was finally able to license two songs from the "Funk Junction" straight from the original mastertapes from his vault.
The A side, "What Will I Be" is totally unissued, it's a great modern funky disco dancer perfect for today's dance floor.
The B side, "Let's Try It Again" is a the killer sweet soul was previously issued in 1980 on Fos-Glo Records.
It's seriously awesome and I have no doubt that many of you will prefer this side. (nothing wrong with a good double sider!)
I plan to visit Warren next month at his studio in Arkansas to plan more releases for Epsilon including "The Love Experience" and some other unissued and issued gems, so watch out!
Thanks for supporting Epsilon Record Co.

http://shop.detourrecords.co.uk/epages/es785745.mobile/en_GB/?ViewAction=ViewNewsletter&ObjectPath=/Shops/es785745

It’s a ‘marmite’ record for sure and perhaps not one for the traditionalists. That said, it’s already picking up rave reviews as a result of a few test presses being played out and already setting dance floors alight, but don’t just take our word for it ….
‘WOWZER! BRILLIANT Supercharged, pumped up funky driving punchy attititude dance floor detonator and sure to shake the dancefloors and will most definitely be in my DJ box.’
Sean Chapman. (Northern Soul & Mod Dj, collector & Chapman Records).
‘Con Funk Shuns 'Move on Up' is the perfect example of the under ground soul scenes acceptance of an alternative musical formula.  A hint of cajun, a perfect vocal delivery and a musical amalgamation that is set to be a new classic.’
Simon Hunt (Rare Soul /Northern Soul Dj & record dealer).
‘Con Funk Shun sprinkle a helping of Cajun spice across their tasty re-working of 'Move on Up'. York based Jay Cee showcases his Nu-Soul talent on 'I've Been Thinking', his debut release. You shouldn't need to, err, 'think it over’ twice to define the sample. High quality, on both contrastingly different, sides, another Last Bastion winner.'
Mark 'Sarge' Sargeant (Scootering Magazine and Rare Soul Dj).

Con Funk Shun Info
Remarkably American soul & funk icons Con Funk Shun are under the radar for many in the UK, with no chart recognition here, a small fan base and having never toured in Europe.
It's therefore Last Bastion Records privilege not only to highlight Con Funk Shun but also to commit to vinyl for the 1st time, their incredible interpretation of that soul classic Curtis Mayfields'  'Move on Up'. (Being a newly discovered shorter version than that on Con Funk Shuns’ 2015 ‘more than love cd LP , the Last Bastion 45  release will be first time in any media format).
Already a requested sound in dj sets and radio shows via an acetate, It's the sound of the Louisiana swamps blending that Zyedeco beat with an accordion(!) and a formidable horn section. The result: a unique and infectious arrangement - a dance groove which doesn't dimmish the socially conscious lyrics which would surely have Curtis smiling.
Signed to Mercury Records in 1976 the debut 45 'sho feels good to me' was a moderate US chart hit and followed up with 'Ffun' an out of the box dance smash, No.1 in the Soul charts and the LPs 'Con Funk Shun' and 'Secrets' then rocketed to Gold status in 1976 & 77.
Originally called 'Project Soul' they were part of the burgeoning funk movement alongside the Isley Brothers and Earth Wind and Fire, getting their 1st break backing Stax act 'Soul Children'. Following a move to Memphis, Project Soul became Con Funk Shun named after the old Harvey Fuguo and the Nite Liters song.
Their 'must see' performances quickly elevated the band to the hottest act in town with funky dance numbers such as 'Ms. Got the lady', 'Chase me' and the Earth Wind and Fire influenced 'Two tight', complimented by trade mark mid tempo jams such as 'Love's train' and their smooth x-over hit 'Baby I'm hooked'.
A 10 year run then followed as one of most consistent and popular R&B/Funk bands in the US in the 7ts and 8ts, with 11 chart albums (one Platinum, four Gold) and 20 hit singles (8 top 10 RnB chart, one No.1).
Then in 1987, internal disputes and emerging different musical tastes on the USA soul & funk scene then lead to the group splitting acrimoniously.
Sucess as solo artistes followed, then in 1997 original members Michael Cooper (co founder, lead vocals & guitar), Felton Pilate (lead vocals, trombone & keyboards) and Rev. Karl Fuller (trumpet) re united and were supplemented by Eric Young (bass), Ron Morton (sax), Kurt Clayton (keyboards) and Dan Tillary (drums). Sadly Louis McCall (co founder, vocals and drummer) was tragically murdered at his Georgia home.
The group's rebirth led to a well received live album for Intersound Records in 1996, then in
2005, the band received the prestigious Soul Tracks award as the 'Best Duo or Band'.
Now an extremely popular live act once more in North America. Con Funk Shun continue today and they celebrated their 45th with a series of sellout shows in the USA and the release of digital remastered previous Lps including 'The Best Of... ',  The Best Of...Vol. 2', 'Greatest Hits' etc. in 2015 their 'More than Love' cd was released to critical acclaim. 2022 sees a massive North American tour and dates in Australia planned.
Con funk Shuns' 'Move on Up' was recorded in 2014 at The Soundform studios, California and features, to rapturous applause,  in their live sets. It's a leave your seats, stand up and dance moment!
