Review Of Aqua Hednesford 01 Feb

THE AQUA: HEDNESFORD 1/02/2002
Thanks to Winston for passing on a review and playlists of the Aqua
Not having been to this venue before, but having heard so much about it from friends I felt really excited on the journey down. A couple of mates from St Ives rung up (Baz and Stuart) and said that they had spare seats and would I and Juliette like to go with them. We jumped at the chance and a couple of hours later we were on our way.
It took about two hours to get to the venue from Cambridge, which wasnt bad considering the high winds and after setting off at around seven we duly arrived around nine. (Basic maths):-)
A large car park just opposite the venue housed most of the punters cars and it was pleasing to see that it was quite full when we parked up. Its a really smart venue, into the foyer and paid the very reasonable amount of three pounds fifty each to get in.
Through the doors and wow, what a pleasant surprise. A massive dance floor which felt really good underfoot, and I just knew that it would be a pleasure to dance on. To the right was the bar, which was well staffed so the thirstier section of the soulies was also well catered for. One of the other things that impressed me was the amount of seating, which was great for the less energetic and more elderly element, 🙂 amongst what seemed like almost one hundred percent TRUE soulies.
I went straight to the bar, and almost immediately turned back to the floor because one of the DJs played J.D.Bryant and you just have to dance to that  tune dont you? After re-visiting the bar, we settled down, met a few fellow KTFrs, Steve and Janet, Nige, Gayle and her Husband, and all sat/mingled together. Nick Brown (Driveller) also turned up, (is there a more hard working promoter on the scene?) and gave out flyers for the re-birth of Scenesville in Euston. There may have been some others of the KTF crew there and as ever if I missed you out I apologise.
I was pulled to the floor almost immediately by the Tangeers and after that rarely left it. The music policy was excellent, with something for everyone, a little bit of modern, some storming rarities, R&B and a great oldies set from Sam Moore. The sound system was also excellent, no distortion, which was a pleasure after having my ears, battered at the rocket the week previous. The atmosphere built over the night and by ten thirty it was banging, and the floor told the story that everyone was enjoying themselves.
I didnt know that many people there (outside of the KTF crew) but they all seemed pretty friendly and ready to chat, which is something that always makes you feel more at home.
The only minor gripes (and they are only minor) were:
The bar closing without any warning, although something was said by the DJs, but it was too late the bar had already closed.
The insistence of people using talc on what was one of the best floors Ive danced on in ages.
Below are selections from some of the DJs Playlists:

Winsford Niter 7th Anniversary Soul Review

7th Annivesary of the South Cheshire Soul Clubs Winsford Allnighter
Yet another top drawer enjoyable nite.
This time was in South Chesire, Winsford way for a return to one of the regular top UK monthly niters ringed on the got to go calendar.
Saturdays niter at Winsford was the 7th Anniversary. .
Checked out the new warm up at the Grange pub, for a few quick pints, bit quiet, late bar extension, on decks while there, playing quality modern such as Al Green, but then went onto northern club classics,
Onto the event itself, well as one of the main established monthly events on the soul calendar. Gotta say always enjoy this one, in through the doors and already fairly packed with more streaming in. Come around midnight place was fairly packed, and the dancefloor was getting a well fair bit of use with a great atmosphre.
Had a word with Sam Moore the main man behind this and the Bretby niter. And he asked me to pass on thanks to all for the 7 years. And told me that both Winsford and Bretby events are both going well strong, and getting better with each one. Well proof of Winsford one was all around me, been saying this a bit recently which may say something for the healthy state of scene. But yet again this is a event which to me is getting better with each one, and each time the attendance and atmosphere gets better, and this night had the highest attendance figures for a fair while. So Winsford definitely healthy and on a big up. Asked about how recent Bretby went, well good job wasn't going anywhere as Mr Moore then proceded grabbing anyone passing and got them to give me a no-prompts view of Bretby. All were well praising, best niter around, cracking atmosphere, quality night were just some of the phases rolled off by the people he grabbed. And as these fitted in with reports that have had from others who attended the last one, will have to say that the fans voices certainly backed up his comments. So sounds like one to put in the "places to go list". Even though he refused to give me a extra complimentary badge and key ring for my badge/key ring collecting wife, along with a hard time for losing my pass out card ;)
Crowd wise, well as said a large North Wales contingent with a lot of familiar faces popping up, now have a well strong proper welsh accent after travelling up with the Bangor convey. Many other familiar rogues knocking around, from all points of the UK, which led to getting a fair few things done and dusted. Usual dealers were hustling in the record sales bit, which tried to avoid as
Sounds wise, well another phase am using a hell of a lot is "something for every one" and yet again from what I heard seemed this was achieved, after exerts of the other day was beginning to feel the pace and took this event at a more lesuirely pace with a lot of time spent in the foyer bit, catching up and so on. So no detailed details. Main feeling got was a more traditonal northern feel than I usually prefer, but no big thing as all djs gave sets you would have expected from them. Dj line up billed was (ripped from that wonderfull detailed events page
Wass/Mark, Andy Riley, Robbo, Bob Hinsley, Roger Banks, Kenny Burrell
also on were Little Scotty, plus the two exiles now having pleasure of living in North Wales, Bob Shaffer and Brian Rae
What I caught whilst in main hall, were all giving out yet more of their normal quality sets, each following their normal styles which have earned their reputation.
Had few laughs as with modern room beat mixing in with sounds from the main room, were subject to some one off unique mixes such as garage version of dust my broom.
Modern room
Think clever ones may be able to suss out what I think of main halls at events by how much time spend in modern room, this time about 2 mins, all seemed to be enjoying them self. Was talking to a couple of guys from Chester, with one spending most of time in Modern room, he singled out Colin Curtis performance in there as well good with a top ***** house set (as 5001 different descriptions of current types of house was never going to remember this one - though learned a new one - dirty house - stuff like drizabone) . . Sorry to you both but names gone.
Overall - well as said better each time, with numbers and atmosphere going up each time and this time was the best attendance for a while and best feel.
Recommended.
Big Thanks to Johnny J for the lift.

Soul At The Social - Bangor - Review

Well this was a good local soul nite, extremely good I would say. Great sounds ranging from some well top rarities to classy well thought revivals, a 100+ crowd, many visitors, all seemed out to enjoy themselves, giving the place later on a great buzz, as always friendly sociable feel, were a fair few record boxes as well, and all to me made it one of the best nites have had there
With Kev Murphy and Steve Thomas pulling out the stops....
Hit read more to read rest
Dj wise - will stick a few plays at end to give you idea
Myself did normal first bit till ten, floor was a bit quiet as it filled up apart from a few brave souls,
Johnny J up next, the promoter and the locals favourite as he know what makes then tick with a selection of some classy revivals and some current floor fillers that got a great reaction.
Kev Murphy up next with a well cracking set, with some of the top current sounds around, top rarities, rare revivals, some serious in your face soul thrown out and went down well
Steve Thomas up next and carried on the good work with a blinding set, some awesome sounds that finished the nite, again got the balance just right with something for everyone to an appreciative crowd. Steve from Holyhead gotta be one of North Wales top Djs/collectors, with a well large collection, has nearly every "want" of mine and takes great pleasure in telling me.
Yeah gotta say Kev and Steve did the business allright, quality stuff
As said 100+ crowd, not the most packed seen it, but a fair few commented on the best buzz, visitors from a far that know of were from NW Pete Coulson and Barry J, Carl and the Stockport gang again, Wrexham, Rhyl and all stops up to Holyhead. Spoke to most of the travellers and all gave it a big thumbs up. Nite closed and then off to the after-event event, which in keeping with nite was well enjoyable.
Have to mention Cel whos a regular visitors, asked me to pass on his crap pile, us 45 failed blind buys is now at the height of 6 6" when stacked on each other, is this a record.....
Final Word a great nite.
Next one not till April 05 (none in March due to the two weekenders in Llandudno and Prestatyn plus the event in Dublin the weekend after)
Djs lined up are Mark Speakman, Chico, Johnny J, Mike H
Playlists - ok as always asked for top 5s and as always waiting to collect. So brief recollections
Very brief ! As was just going to dredge memory but times just run out, so out of here, get back to this later hopefully

Hoagy Lands Website

Hoagy Lands was buried yesterday. Mark Hanson has updated his web site and passed on the following news.

On the site you will see the two interviews he did, one for "In The Basement" [May 2001] and the "Soul Up North" [December 2001]. There is also label scans of some of his 45s from MGM to Paramount, plus some UK 45s. There is even a snippet of Hoagy singing "The Next In Line" at Cleethorpes through Steve Heinsens video site.
The main thing though is the Tribute CD of Hoagy singing Live at Cleethorpes. On this page you will see details of how to order the album.
Please remember all profits from this CD will go to the family of Hoagy Lands and [through their help] The Rhythm & Blues Foundation.
The Picture Gallery, discography and music clips will be up soon.

Burnley Cricket Club Saturday 2nd Feb.

Dont know much about this one but guest DJ is Rob Thomas so it has the pedigree to be a good night.

Only downside I can see is that the hours are a bit short, apparently doors open at 7:45pm and the night finishes at 12:45am. But Im sure the class music from Rob will make up for the shortage in hours.
