Dome Second Annivesary - Last Nite

Word on last nite at the Dome was that it was a packer, with one of the longest queues, normal quality great sounds, great atmosphere, described in the words of one as the nite was "well mental". A right old celebration of 2 great years

Have a brief view on the nite by Mike Hump. Plus story about a guy who must live on another planet
Dome 2nd Anniversary - Friday 2nd December 2001

A great deal has been said about the Dome since it opened 2 years ago in North London. Strangely there seemed to be less anticipation about this one than of late. Can't understand why there was the usual excellent home team line up with Guest DJ - Kenny Burrell. Perhaps the southern scene is suffering from excellence fatigue and is starting to take its three top nites (100 club, Scenesville and CSC) plus the many smaller events and warmers for granted. There seemed to be more chat in the week before about who would be let in (or not).
For once I was early and was in the pub by 8.30, there was already a gaggle of soulies inside and the atmosphere soon warmed up. The first 50 through the door got a free tape - regretfully I was well to the back and missed out. But everyone was given a 2nd anniversary badge - nice one to match the first.
Musically a top nite, I was feeling a bit rough with a cold and intended to leave early but after a gradual build up I stayed till the end.
Kenny Burrell did a top mixed set, stand out for the crowd was "Wake up to the sunshine girl" which got the biggest applause of the night. Of course the floor was rammed to "that" record which also got a big cheer. The crowd doesn't forget their roots.
What stood out for me was the consistent high quality of the sounds through the night. Also a particular pleasure for me was the top line R&B mix especially the last hour and a half. The night finished off with a few oldies leaving the crowd wanting more and me pleased that I didn't bunk off early.
Dance floor was busy all evening, very few gaps - a further tribute to the DJ's. At the end the crowd wanted more and things only stopped when the managers took the cartridge off the decks.
I think it was a first for me 1st time in two years of London events when I didn't hear "Voodoo Working" or maybe I just missed it.
One or two moments that stuck out on the social side, Matt Jahans telling everyone that he was pissed - yeah, and his point was? Also, Steve Heinsen selling videotapes of the Dome "Sidney Barnes" 30th March nite. Good footage of the place, dancers and interviews by Winston of the DJ's: A snip at £8, watched it today - excellent value. Even better Steve sold one to Matt - what a salesman. If you want one you can mail Steve on sheinsen@aol.com.

Thanks as always to soul fans who take the time to pass on rest of us what went on

Heard a story about a guy who needs to get himself on a "living in the real world" course as soon as possible!

Imagine that you were involved with a new soul event.
You plan it to run the day after the next CSC Dome event, not only that you plan it to run it in the same area, not only that but you plan to run it clashing with every CSC Dome for the whole bloody year!!

With me so far, now also throw in the fact that you never once bothered to liase with any of the CSC to try and work out dates when setting up your event, and well gotta say that you dont sound either very clever or very friendly at all.

Ok so just imagine you did the above, would you then turn up at the Dome and start flyering your new event without asking promoter or ought , you know the one that has been set up to clash in the same area, on the same weekend for the whole year!
And if you did how long do you think you get away with it

Well Kevin, you might be naive or just stupid, but when reading your moaning about it today thought, what planet are you living on. Did you honestly think it was a good idea trying to advertise in a nite that your new event has been set up to clash with??

Of course some may say it was a cynical PR stunt, from your mentors dirty tricks book. Nah never....

Two Years On -Last Night plus tonite

Last night saw the second Annivesary of The Capitol Soul Club Soul Nite At the Dome in London

In the two years this event has grown in stature, with many people now calling it THE TOP SOUL NITE IN THE COUNTRY.

Unfortunately spent most of this nite in bed due to some bug doing the rounds. So hopefully someone will pass on soon how this nite went down.

Also on last nite saw Annivesary at Birchfield, whilst tonite sees Niter at Tonys Blackburn, plus what is billed as the last ever Niter at Albrighton, Lea Manor Hotel

Last Weekend Occurrences - Winsford Soul Allnigher

Weekend was a good one, few words on some of the events that went on...
Heres some of the things that went on
Been told the Bury soul nite on Friday was well packed, full dancefloor all nite, music mainly oldies style, with Ginger mixing in a fair few current sounds. Also Dave Evison and his son Joshua? 13 years old (?) in action
Attendence of 1000+ there quoted, one mate says was a really good night with great atmosphere, and a great mix of sounds, only time floor wasnt full was when a couple of dodgy wigan "classics" were played. Plus heard that some DJs were having a great time with some great one-liners
Saturday
King Georges Blackburn was on, heard from one guy who went, that he didnt enjoy it, too many beer monsters in attendance meaning a soggy dancefloor
Winsford Niter Saturday
A most enjoyable nite, wasnt a packer but not sparse either. Top tip - turned up early to grab few beers, but the pub across carpark is now boarded up, so thought hit bar inside, big mistake as bottles only and at 2.20 each just a bit expensive, gotta be pub 5 mins down road next time
Dj wise -There was some problems with planned line up as many were delayed and things had to be juggled a bit, which with my memory, the fact that was not driving, may just reflect in details!
Keith Money - Scotlands finest. This spot was the main must hear for me as last time heard him at the 100 Club did a great set , must have been the most travelled furthest DJ but unfortunately was only given a 45 min spot, started off as expected top rare sounds, all his normal top stuff- dancefloor full of those who like their soul rare and full of quality, the last 15 mins or so dancefloor tailed off a bit though think was due to rare soul fatigue, as so much quality was dished out
Derek Allen - Last time caught him think was down 100 club on return to uk about 3 year ago he was Mr Enthusiastic, dancing, singing, and can remember a great set this time, seemed to be lot more subdued and so did his plays
Paul Baldwin - Great balanced set, he started off with a couple of classy floorfilling revivals, which went down well but had us thinking in for oldies session but then just dropped in Sonatas - Going Down The Road and then Montclairs dead casual like, and carried on with intelligent mixing, gotta be a winning formula as seemed to unify the crowd
Roger Banks - Just caught brief bit of spot seemed normal quality worthwhile set
Bob Hinsley -As always a great set Charisma Band, Bobby Rich and more classy 70s balanced with top 60s rare floorfillers
Kerry L - Memory says mainly classic oldies
Sam Moore - inc some uplifting r+b
Little Scotty- Missed most
Brian Rae - Finishing set and a lot different from last time here with some
great choices of little heard and some first hear to me oldies
Modern - Didnt spend as long as last time as main hall was a lot better this time, Liberation being the brand name with Roger Williams running the show, djs inc Mark Randle, Steve Aggasild and more. To me modern is a complete different kettle of fish nowadays and feel am not really the man to do justice to a review of the room, and not really fair just doing it by popping in every now and again, all I say is there was a fair few in there, dont think as packed as remember last one, dancefloor busy, crowd always seemed to be well enjoying themselves. So djs were doing the works, did hear some classy stuff. So I would consider it a job well done, of course if you were one of the many in there who were having a top time and want to give a more "informative" view feel free to send it in.
Overall View- mix current and oldies, 50/50 may be fair guess, but what was good to hear was some thought going into some of the oldies set, a fair amount of interesting revivals, that did the job and got the floor busy, with not many groans of not that bloody record again that follow some "top" djs . Though thinking starting a Jackie Wilson Because of you Free award as cant remember not hearing it at a venue:) Current rarities, well many ultra rare and just plain normal rare quality sounds were dished out. Though gotta say never agree with total ban on repetition, but was a hell of a lot of it tonite, Cashmeres, Sugar and Spice were two of many that got repeated, sure some were played up to 3 times. Lot of R+B dished out ranging from current popular ones to bit more obscure.
Odds: no lengthy detailed playlists as well busy but one r+b wise heard a great more up todate version of Lillians Offitt - Miss you so - sort of takes the happy days feel out of it and gives it more solid 60s r+b feel that works well and better to me.Ted Taylor on Ronn being the one to look for. Since found has in past been popular mod spin.
End of story - a most enjoyable niter, better than last one in my view, myself would have prefered some of the well known oldies to have be given a rest, but one mans poison..... think the mix worked well with the crowd and a good balance and nite for all was achieved.
As always just my own and others personal view of things, feel different? Well dont start moaning at me ...just use that submit button!

Fallen into the pit?

Always used to think try and do the right thing is the best policy for internet and
thought that others would do same. Bit naive maybe but at least was happy
with myself. Well after seeing a certain person try and devalue ( yet again) stuff I am
involved with. I went off on one and replied to comments that he made in an
issue of a magazine on this site.
As was well jacked off with the way he lied and twisted things wrote most of
it fuming.
On reflection I now feel that at the time I had fallen briefly into the same sort of cess pit he enjoys living
in and reacted in a way that people like that just thrive on.

Due to this have pulled a couple of articles on this site
Not because have changed my views, but feel there are better ways to sort it

Hoagy Lands / Sid Barnes

Just to let you know that Ive just found out that Hoagy is yet again in hospital, but this time it is something to do with his legs.

Just got a CD of Hoagys performance along with Sids from Cleethorpes and they are thinking of putting it out on CD after it has been edited. The sound quality is superb as the recording was made through the mixing desk at the venue. More details will be available through their websites

Weekend Bits From Up North Wales/NW

Quick Word on Broughton Wings Soul Nite.

First time visit to this venue and a great nite. Held in the British
Aerospace social club at Broughton near Chester, nite was a well welcomed
change from the normal format of events. The club itself is a very plush
venue that the words social club just doesnt do justice. Because of world
events, there was a tightening of security but this was hardly noticable.

Sounds wise, well few plays below but were talking about across the board
feel here with all eras covered and not just the token 60s 45 as some "open
minded " venues do, which fitted in perfectly with the venue and the crowd.
As said just a quick word, but if youre after a classy nite out with some
well classy soul this well could be your thing. Most definitely be returning
and recommended.

Couple of top plays from the nite from DJs

Steve Thomas (Holyhead) first main spot

Charles Johnson - Never had a love so good - Alston

Soul Communicators - Those Lonely Nights - Fee Bee

Jive Fyfe - If I had a Chance - Decca

Dells - Thinking About You - Cadet

Bob Hinsley Top 3 plays from the nite

Bobby Rich - Theres A Girl Somewhere For me- Sambea

Charisma Band - Aint Nothing Like Your Love- Buddah

Vivian Carrol - Oh Yeah Yeah Yeah - Merleen

Brian Ellis was on next but by that time was well in to enjoyment mood and forgot to ask plus memory let me down

Soul Sam finished the nite with as always some great stuff

Played a couple of Detroit 60s one offs - which sounded good on first hear
one dodgy recollection was -
Had a quick visual at one and tried comitting it to memory ! result was
Marget Lettin - love will find a way - genloro
but even now looking at it doesnt seem right at all, still its as good as it
gets, treat it as a anagram challenge
the other which after a determined effort to remember all 3 of us could come up
with was errr..
it had the word angel in.

Friday saw monthly local soul nite at Llandudno Rugby Club,

Djs inc Mark Mac, Mark Morgan, Chico, Tash +,

As always a good social nite,

Sounds wise Oldies, Current , R n B and 70s

Managed to grab top 3 from nite of Chico whos guesting at next Broughton

Viola Edwards - love Me Baby

TSU Tornados - Please Heart Dont Break - rampart st

Jerry and Capreez - Shes Gone - c/up

Sunday saw Soul Sam at The Carlton Pub Llandudno for a top local casual laid back pub quality soul nite.

For your diarys both next Broughton and Soul Sam at Carlton are on weekend around the 15 Dec

Greatstone Hotel, Manchester - Sat. 17/11/01

The place to be for rare soul this weekend in the north west is the Greatstone Hotel, Stretford, Manchester. This weekends guest DJs are Phil Wainwright and Alex Jones, both of whom have superb collections - be prepared for some awesome seldom heard toons.
For those of you who havent been its a cosy little cellar bar, not unlike the Beehive in Bradford, but this place is suited more toward the chin rubbers amongst us as there isnt that much room to dance. Another attraction is that you get a supper included with the admission.

Review: Wilton Niter Last Friday By Mark H

Review: Wilton Niter Last Friday by Mark H
Well seems like was a definite weekend and a half if quality rare soul is your bag. Onwards and Upwards!
Mouse and Andy Dyson started things off with some class tunes, like Love Stormy Weather, that thing on Transitional "It Dont matter baby" that is the dogs danglies, Clarence Hill and some new discoveries that I didnt know.
John Hosler was on next with things like "man from soul" and the great [need a copy] Tootsie Rollers "Give Me Love".
John Britton played some great Modern tunes and Richard Caiton.
Roger Banks played the great Charmaines "Standing in the need of love" and Soul Bros. Inc "Pyramid". Also must mention the mega Creations track he played. No idea what it is though, but it sounded like a Motown acetate?
Chicago Shane Cox treated us to some mega Chi-soul like, Ernest Mosley, Attractions [June Bug], Del-Tours, Vel-vets [Number One], Perk Lee on Boss [need one of these too.]. Then over to the west coast for Ty Karim "you really made it good to me" Romark
Saus was up to his great self and what a pity he hasnt the inspiration he once had to d.j. more, as the Wilton is really the only place you can see him now. Dittis of distinction included, Johnnie mae Matthews "Mamas gonna stop you", Lonnie Lester "you cant go", Demetrice Faire "young girl", Spidells "Dream girl" plus a few Motown goodies like, Marvellettes "only your love can save me" and Four Tops "I cant escape your memory" and staying with Detroit, Shades of blue "A way to love you".
That left Bob Hinsley to finish off proceedings. Highlights from the three quarters of an hour we heard before myself and Chalky left were, Trends "Not too old to cry", Bobby Rich and Don & Ron.
Great night as usual.
2002 dates are as follows:
all Fridays 11 - 6

Review - 100 Club Saturday by Irish Greg

Review - 100 Club Saturday by Irish Greg
The 100 Club All-nighter was one of the best Ive attended over the last year or so. The music was of a very high standard (even higher than normal) with Mick Smith spinning the newly discovered (Unreleased) version of Trick bag by CP LOVE and not Tommy Tate as some people are saying. Mick also spun the likes of The Inmates, Bobby Rich, Classics on Yang-G, Eric Lomax C/up, True-Image, Magnetics plus many more top raritys.
Shifty was also on top form and spun some great new 6ts stuff that I have not heard before plus many one offs.
Adey C. spun the record of the night though, unreleased track by The Charmaines (stomping Soul/RnB in real Dr.Truelove style).
Adey also spun an unreleased version of the Classic Doris Troy track ILL DO
ANYTHING by DEE DEE SHARP.
Carl Willingham did his bit but I just didnt rate his so called RnB tracks (much to Early for my ears! Some sounding like 5ts blues) but when called upon he spun some nice rare tunes.
Butch? Well nothing needs saying-The DJs D.J. really delivered a rarest of the rare set with Mello Souls, Tranells, Mayfield Singers, Nat Hall & many of his current
c/ups.
The night was also helped as many of the London crowd pissed it upearly on at The Pleasure Unit in Bethnal Green (Soul/Mod pub in East London).
The 100 Club Atmosphere was great and that certainly added to the night, long may that continue. Remember I usually leave The 100 All-nighter at around 6am but this one was so good that at 8am I was still dancing to The Impressions while my mates were playing with paper Aeroplanes on the stage!!!.
TOP NIGHT

Review - Togetherness Modern Side By Dave Dixon

Review - Togetherness Modern Side By Dave Dixon
I went to Togetherness on Saturday and was really looking forward to it, especially considering the aggro I had getting prepared to be able to make the journey. I walked in about 11pm during Soul Sams spot and thoroughly enjoyed it. I didnt know a single record he played but it was fantastic rare modern soul including a Timeless Legend record I hadnt heard before. It seemed pretty quiet at this stage - no record dealers and bar was quiet too. However, Mike Stephens set up a stall later on.
Next up was Richard Searling, an hour earlier than usual becuse Dean wasnt there, starting off with Donny Hathaway/Roberta Flack to get people up. He also played Angie Stone and OJays back to back which went down quite well. I dont think he played anything too dramatic. Andy Davies was also on earlier than usual and said at the beginning of his set that hes going to play some big tunes to get everyone going. His set included Janita, Dennis Taylor, Drizabone (Real Love) and Llorca. He did the job as stated but I couldnt help thinking that he was being under-utilised.
So after a set of stuff we all know, I was looking forward to Mike Stephens but he basically carried on in the same vein - Jon B, Shabazz (Glad Youre In My Life), Jaheim, Rahsaan Patterson. I started to wonder if the DJs had been told to play it safe. Mikes a top man but his set was very unadventerous and he is capable of playing all sorts of obscure promo stuff. I dont think it wouldve been his choice alone to play that set.
So far no soulful garage and next up is Colin Curtis. I prepared myself for an entire set of it, in view of his recent comments and that the previous djs hadny played any. Instead we had Kenny Lattimore, Luther Vandross, Harold Melvin & Bluenotes and some other 70s stuff for the first 30 mins and then it was Joi Caldwell, Lenny Fontana, Jon Cutler and others for the last 30. I must say he had the place rocking during his garage bit.
It would have been so easy for Terry Jones to continue where Colin left off. After all, hes been playing soulful garage in his sets for the last few years anyway so its nothing new to him. But, top marks to the man, he starts of by slowing it down by playing Maxwell and then Maysa Leak, The Dells, Main Ingredient, Donnie (Youre The One - record of the night) and other soul stuff. He finished off by playing crossover stuff like Melvin Moore and Karen ? (Make Love Last Forever). Easily the best set so far.
Gary Dennis then started off with Ollie Nightingale & Chuck Cockerham and played some great older stuff. Unfortunately, I was in danger of nodding off at the end of his set as Id been up since 6.15am on Saturday so as much as I tried to keep myself going I was marched off the premises by my wife so I missed Gavins final set.
Overall verdict - In comparison to the high standards its set itself over the last four years, it was average. I enjoyed myself, had a good dance and it was great to bump into folks again. However, I usually walk away wanting lots of tunes or to dig out some old ones but not this time. I thought too many of the djs were playing it safe. Perhaps its always like this but Im just getting fussy because Im more up to speed these days and have been out a lot more this year. There was also a lot of duplications - Angie Stone, Jo Jo, Marvin Gaye, Maurice J, Dante, Jaheim (Just In Case someone didnt play it earlier on) & Rahsaan Patterson.
Sets of the night were Soul Sam, TJ and Gary. Ive been pretty loyal to Togetherness - Ive been to 10 out of 12 of the allnighters and the recent weekender (which I thoroughly enjoyed) but it may be time to spend my hard earned at different venues next year. Lets face it - theres a lot of good competition these days. There seems to be a policy change from a progressive modern allnighter to a twice a year party night. Then again, maybe its me. Also, the sound quality was not good. The volume caused some significant distortion - a view shared by many people.
Cheers,
Dave

Reviews - Lowton - North and South and More On Weekend

Reviews - Lowton - North and South and More On Weekend

Story so far .....
Lowton - North and South - Top Nite - Full ish review on happenings and plays plus can hear last 30 mins of final spot -

Wilton - Reports say great nite as usual with classy music from the residents and guests.

100 Club - Been told Saturdays niter had great atmosphere and as always great sounds

Weekend - As said before there were three top drawer events on this weekend,
100 club niter, Wilton Niter and Lowton mini-niter, which must have made it a
hard call for lovers of quality rare soul , to decide where to go. Myself,
well as Lowton was the closest and as it was a one off featuring 4 of CSC djs
guesting it had to be that one.

Well my view looking back on it all is .............an outstanding nite!

One of the most enjoyable nites have had in a long while, everything seemed to
come together, Djs seemed to be on a mission, lot of only see once in a while
faces made the trip, an appreciative dancefloor, yeah for me all things
combined and made it a great nite.

Format of the nite was North And South, with 4 of Capitol Soul Club DJs
making journey up from the Dome and five from the North playing at home
DJS

Line up went something like

Paul Baldwin & Dave Holt

Ian Cunliffe
Missed these spots as didnt get in to late, anyone fill in details?

Stuart Tyler - Though made determined effort to get there early enough
to catch a full set from Stuart T, as missed his last 2 at dome, failed miserably!
Managed to catch last 20 mins or so, which included

Gladys Tyler - A Little Bitty Girl - Decca

Exits - I Dont Want To Hear It - Gemini

Deadbeats -No Second Chance-strata

Arthur Fenn - First time caught him for years, started off with Black Wings Have
My Angel and continued with a well strong mix of rare 60s and classy 70s

Terry Davis - Havent heard him for a while as last two events went to he
didnt show .

Didnt catch a lot as was record barring and R+B-ing , but did catch Soul Sounds
and Gotta Have Money -Exits

Irish Greg- A Storming set, carried on in same style as at Nantwich niter- top
sounds coming at you from every angle

Heres playlist (not in order)

Mayfield Singers - Dont stop Now - Unissued Vocal Version

Districts - One lover (just wont do) - Nile

TC Lee & The Bricklayers - Up & down the hill - King

Four Tops - Lonely lover - Unissued

Johnnie Mae Matthews - Dont mess with my man - Big D

Bobby Treetop - Wait till I get to know ya - Tuff

Judy Freeman - Hold On - Unissued lp version

Counts - Our love going to get stronger etc - Yes

Brand New faces - Brand New Faces - Lujuna

Curly Moore - You dont mean - Sansu

Tim Brown - Dug out many rarities and some classy revivals from ones you dont
just hear cause of rarity such as CODs - Shes On Fire to classy revivals such
as Eddie Parker -Love You Baby

David Flynn - What was Mr Flynn up to, was expecting a fairly balanced set,
you know like a few safe plays thrown in......

But werent to be. It was like he was on a mission, spent the whole spot under
a constant attack of top quality one offs, rarities and stormers.

And all worked and went down well

Full playlist below

Alan H- Had last spot and kept it going, always get a strong R+B taste when
hes on but also get mixed in quality stormers, touch of 70s and down tempo
soulful stuff

Threw at us loads of highlites, the headturning old wigan spin Isonics-
Sugar, that sounded awesome, CSC anthem almost - Im In With The Downtown Crowd,Chick, Chick never sick of hearing that 30 sec chick chick break, and
finishing with great ender for the nite - let me down easy,

Save me typing as sick of it - check out link for chance to hear last 35 mins
of his set, more from nite in pipeline

R&B room - Paid it a fair few visits (hence blanks above) and caught
Alan H, Pete Coulson, Mark Morgan, Barry J and others in action in the room.
with loads of current popular R+B floor fillers being dished out, along with
some good quality first hears, dont think ever seen so many excello 45s ,

Modern room- A few visits and seemed to be doing the business with some bang
up to date examples of quality soul, DJs included Colin Curtis & Bary
Maleedy etc

Spotted a set of bongos up next to decks, didnt see them getting used,
though guy was behind them, so still wondering what that

was all about? Anyone?

Crowd - Crowd wise - was told about 350 in, bit lower than normal but as other
quality events

such as Wilton and 100 on at weekend must had an effect, plus noticed a bit of
a difference in crowd make up compared to last time I went.

Dancefloor - Never saw it rampacked but was used through out, and
during the early hours when normally a big drop off in numbers there was still

plenty of action on a par with last time

Overall - Well have said what I thought, all of lot was with, agreed in
it being a great nite. Dont get chance much to hear a lot of the Domes spins
elsewhere but all sounded just as strong.

Future - Well after tonite and also recent Nantwich niter, well seems like
things are looking good, have heard so many soul fans recently moan about
tired old oldies, lazy "top" djs, well will just say the answer is
out there!

Hit here to listen to last 35 mins of Alan h who did the finishing hour

Hit here to stream
or go to soul sounds/live sessions to download

Hopefully 3 x more sessions from this nite soon!
