Jackie Wilson Biography
Jack Leroy Wilson Jr. (June 9, 1934 – January 21, 1984) was an American soul singer and performer. A tenor with a four-octave range, Wilson was a prominent figure in the transition of rhythm and blues into soul. Wilson was considered a master showman and one of the most dynamic singers and performers in pop, R&B, and rock & roll history, earning the nickname "Mr. Excitement".
Wilson gained initial fame as a member of the R&B vocal group Billy Ward and His Dominoes. He went solo in 1957 and scored over 50 chart singles spanning the genres of R&B, pop, soul, doo-wop and easy listening, including 16 R&B Top 10 hits, in which six R&B of the repertoire ranked as number ones. On the Billboard Hot 100, Wilson scored 14 top 20 pop hits, six of which reached the top 10. Jackie Wilson was one of the most important and influential musical artists of his generation.
A two-time Grammy Hall of Fame Inductee, and winner of the Rhythm and Blues Foundation's special Legacy Tribute Award in 2003, Jackie Wilson was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Jackie Wilson #69 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

Scarborough Northern Soul Weekender
6th, 7th, 8th September 2019
All aboard for our 10th Anniversary weekender on the fabulous Yorkshire coast in glorious Scarborough. We are pleased to announce that all the remedial works are now complete on the Cliffs above the Spa Complex and the "Cliff lift" is fully operational once again directly in to the Spa after a £150,000 maintenance program.
As in previous years we are holding a two roomed event in the Southside of the Spa Complex, upstairs the Ocean Ballroom features totally Northern Soul, with solid oldies, current floor fillers and favourites from the ‘60s & ‘70s. Whilst downstairs the Promenade Lounge plays host to our Soul Club showcases, Clubs already booked for this include The Wardrobe, Leeds, Crigg Soul Club, Wakefield, Soul in Selby, The Cask, Scarborough and Bassetlaw Soul Club, Worksop. Plus keep an eye on the soul press for others to be announced and confirmed closer to the date.
All rooms will feature great soul music played off original issued 45s. This maintains the sound quality and ethos of this wonderful music. We have other sessions planned in the room including rare and underplayed sets and also a Wigan Casino tribute set from original Wigan DJ Pat Brady to celebrate our 10th Anniversary at the Spa Complex.
As with all our events we put the emphasis on Yorkshire DJ’s, so you can expect to hear something away from the normal “formula” as at other venues.

This is also the last, late summer September date that we had pre-booked; in 2020 the event will move back in to the Autumn and take place on Friday 30th October to the 1st November 2020 as will future events.

If you’ve not been to our Scarborough Weekender before, the most convenient place for accommodation is on the South Cliff side of town which is directly above the Spa Complex. The cliff lift comes straight into the venue and is operational to suit the venue times. A weekend ticket is also available to use the service as many times as you like over the weekend and it is considerably cheaper than getting taxis.
As in previous years the Spa will be having special drinks promotions available during the weekender, details are yet to be confirmed.
Scarborough is a town rich in history, with the old castle, harbour and the Blue Flag beaches all there to explore. So when you're not dancing make the most of your weekend away from home.
If you attended the 2018 weekender back in November, you may remember we were raising money for Sheffield Children’s Hospital, we managed to raise £600, plus with matching of £500 from Lloyds banking group made £1,100.00. A fantastic amount! Thank you, we shall be hoping to reach that sum once again at this year’s event.

The All-Nighter has been an integral part of “the scene” since the phrase Northern Soul first came into popular use following the now legendary Blues & Soul article entitled “The Up-North Soul Groove” in June 1970 by journalist Dave Godin (issue no.36).
During the heyday of the Northern Soul scene the All-Nighter was the preferred format for the travelling soul fan. It separated the scene’s top venues from the hundreds of regional soul nights in pubs, clubs and community halls across the land. The All-Nighter was the ultimate experience and the only place to hear the best, the rarest and the breaking sounds spun by the leading DJs. It was born in Manchester’s Twisted Wheel in September 1963, found its feet (its dancing feet) at the Golden Torch in Stoke-on-Trent from 1970-72, and truly came of age at the Wigan Casino Soul Club from ’73 onwards establishing itself as the premier National and even International event of the 70s.
All 16 All-NIGHTER tracks on this newly curated compilation have been remastered from analogue tapes and original vinyl. It is pressed on audiophile heavyweight 180g vinyl housed in a printed inner sleeve complete with new liner notes. All-Dayer joins a growing catalogue of premium music on the Club Soul imprint.

A just released release from Kent out now in both cd and download formats. This album focuses on the gospel side of Dave Hamilton, offering 24 tracks all related to his Sacred Sounds' imprint. Kent saying that for their first foray into gospel, Dave Hamilton’s inspired work is a natural starting point.

Sparse but compelling gospel recordings from the late 60s and early 70s, brimming with the soul sounds for which Dave Hamilton is renowned.
Detroit guitarist, producer and label-owner Dave Hamilton worked in the city from the mid-40s to the end of the century. He was involved in most fields of black music; gospel was no exception. Although not a particularly religious person, his home was directly opposite Reverend C.L. Franklin’s New Bethel Baptist Church, which his daughters Erma, Aretha and Carolyn would attend and sing. It was a major hub for the Civil Rights movement and Hamilton would have made many contacts through that church. Having an affordable recording studio in the centre of the city, and a reputation as an accomplished guitarist, producer and approachable character, meant he was in business in the right place at the right time.
Hamilton dabbled with gospel recordings throughout his career; in 1969 he registered his Sacred Sounds imprint and entered the gospel field seriously. The label had around 20 single releases and at least one album. The records were sold in the churches where the groups performed, and also got across the USA through plays on radio station WLAC. They must have been pressed in relatively small numbers, judging by the scarcity of the discs today. A few 45s were pressed on one-off labels such as New Creation, Silver Harp and Motor City, and the Reynolds Singers featuring Little Stevie was released on Hamilton’s otherwise secular..

Hitsville: The Making Of Motown
More firmer dates and details have been released by Showtime on their upcoming documentary film Hitsville: The Making Of Motown, with the first TV broadcast scheduled for 24 August 2019
Hitsville: The Making Of Motown is the Showtime documentary film that looks at Motown during the period beginning with the birth of Motown in Detroit in 1958 until its relocation to Los Angeles in the early 1970s.
Directed by British directors brothers Benjamin and Gabe Turner this feature-length film is being billed as the definite article. The film includes previously unseen footage from the label archives and Berrys Gordy's personal collection. Universal Music Group involvement means that the films makers have had access to the label's vast catalog of songs by the Supremes, Stevie Wonder, the Temptations, Marvin Gaye and others.

Chink A Chank Baby B/W That's What Love Is - September Jones - The Pied Piper Players (Pied Piper)
The final September Jones track to be discovered from her amazing eight-song Pied Piper sessions is ‘Chink A Chank Baby’ – the original Detroit recording of a backing track that Doni Burdick recorded over years later as ‘Whatcha Gonna Do’. Burdick’s version went big in some rare soul venues when found in the 90s but is a shadow of September’s exhilarating outing. The flip is the backing track of the Hesitations’ ‘That’s What Love Is’, a stormer of a record the music of which was re-used for Eddie Parker’s ‘I’m Gone’ a couple of years later.

Don't It Make You Feel Funky B/W I Gotta Be Free - Joe Hicks
At last there is a legal re-release of Joe Hick’s all-time Northern classic ‘Don’t It Make You Feel Funky’ – a record oozing adrenalin and sounding magnificent from the original master tape. We’ve used the rare and collectable AGC label flip, ‘I Gotta Be Free’, to make the 45 too tough to refuse.

Given My Life B/W A Frown On My Face - Mighty Whites / Jacqueline Jones - Kent Select
The Mighty Whites’ ‘Given My Life’ is the Modern Soul hit of the last 18 months. It’s popular on the European rare soul circuit through spins by Dave Thorley, aka @Dave Thorley on the funkier end thanks to DJ Dean Rudland aka @Dean Rudland, and is a 100 Club classic in the making. The later disco version by Brotherhood comes nowhere near the quality of this earlier soulful take. It is coupled here with Jacqueline Jones’ 1974 Loadstone crossover classic ‘A Frown On My Face’ – a record that gets harder to find and more expensive by the month.

Just Say A Four Letter Word B/W She's My Real Sweet Woman - California Playboys
The California Playboys’ 1976 Loadstone LP has been changing hands for three-figure sums for decades. Here are the top two dance tracks that put it into that price bracket. Both are favourites of Modern Soul fans, and to have them on a handy 7-inch disc with a suitable 45 edit will make them irresistible.

The Dells Biography
The Dells were an American R&B vocal group. Formed in high school in 1952 by founding members Marvin Junior, Verne Allison, Johnny Funches, Chuck Barksdale, and Mickey and Lucius McGill, under the name the El-Rays. They released their first recording in 1954 and two years later had their first R&B hit with "Oh What a Night". After disbanding due to a near-fatal car crash in 1958, the band reformed in 1960 with Funches being replaced by Johnny Carter. This lineup remained together until Carter's death in 2009. In 2004 The Dells were inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. The group performed until illness forced longtime lead singer Marvin Junior and bass vocalist Chuck Barksdale into retirement, ending the group's 60-year run.

Van Allen Clinton McCoy (January 6, 1940 – July 6, 1979) was an American musician, record producer, arranger, songwriter, singer and orchestra conductor. He is known best for his 1975 internationally successful song "The Hustle". He has approximately 700 song copyrights to his credit, and is also noted for producing songs for such recording artists as Gladys Knight & the Pips, The Stylistics, Aretha Franklin, Brenda & the Tabulations, David Ruffin, Peaches & Herb and Stacy Lattisaw.

In the last two decades, Little Ann’s music has gone from being almost unheard to celebrated widely across the world. Initially known only as a footnote for having one side of one Ric-Tic single in 1968, the discovery and playing of her acetate of ‘What Should I Do’ at Wigan Casino in the late 70s meant her name become important to rare soul fans (when it was revealed that Little Ann was the real singer of the song erroneously attributed to Rose Valentine at the time).

Once Ace Records acquired Dave Hamilton’s Detroit studio tapes, through the auspices of researcher Richard Gilbert, more previously unheard gems came to light and eventually there were found to be nine songs recorded in 1967 and 1968 with Dave and his partner Darrell Goolsby. The dancers ‘Who Are You Trying To Fool’, ‘Sweep It Out In The Shed’ and ‘Lean Lanky Daddy’, proved to be perfect additions for the Northern Soul dance scene, while ‘I Gotta Have You’ and ‘Possession’ wowed the funk crowd, and the beauty of ‘Deep Shadows’ got through to every ...

Van Allen Clinton McCoy was born in Washington D.C., Jan 6, 1940 and would go on to become an internationally acclaimed music producer, arranger, conductor and writer with over 700 songs to his credit.
To the pop buying public he is known for his 1975 Grammy Award® chart-topper “The Hustle”, which at the time of recording was a throw-away track on a low-budget instrumental album called Disco Baby. McCoy was unable to repeat the success, and within three years, in 1979, he died of a heart attack at the age of only 39.
To rare soul fans Van McCoy is a hero: THE most prolific writer and producer of Northern Soul of all time, working with a host of legendary artists including… Barbara Lewis, Jackie Wilson, The Vonettes, Gene Chandler, The Sweet things, Barbara Mercer, Irma Thomas, Ruby & The Romantics, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Bobby Reed, David Ruffin, The Ad libs, Billy Woods, Dee Dee Warwick, Chris Bartley, Tony Talent, Betty Everett, Juanita Williams, and Kendra Spotswood (aka Sandi Sheldon) with whom he had a five year relationship.
DANCIN’ was released by Shelby Singleton in 1976 on his SSS International label and attributed to Van McCoy & Friends, although none of the “friends” are actually listed on the album. Clearly this was released to cash in on the worldwide success of “The Hustle” and McCoy himself probably had little to do with it. All of the ten original songs were recorded much earlier, circa 1968-69, and all but three – “Sweet And Easy”, “If I Could Make you Mine” and “The Generation Gap” – had been languishing, unheard and unreleased, in the Nashville vaults ever since.
It is hard to believe that the album, with its kitsch cover and out-of-kilter track list, garnered any commercial success at the time, although it did get a release in Australia. However, copies soon filtered through into the UK and into the hands of club DJs at Wigan Casino with perhaps “Help Is On The Way” becoming the stand-out track. Richard Searling played the mid-tempo “Just Another Dress Rehearsal” in the latter days of the club while unreleased instrumental versions of “Ain’t Got No Love” and “Dress Rehearsal” were played post-Wigan.
It has long been contested just who the mysterious vocalists are. Chris Bartley is the favourite, although Van himself almost certainly appears on some of the tracks. Either way, Club Soul are proud to present the first ever reissue of this cult album, complete with the aforementioned, previously unreleased, instrumentals.

Bobby “Blue” Bland Biography
Robert Calvin Bland (né Robert Calvin Brooks; January 27, 1930 – June 23, 2013), known professionally as Bobby "Blue" Bland, was an American blues singer.
Bland developed a sound that mixed gospel with the blues and R&B. He was described as "among the great storytellers of blues and soul music... [who] created tempestuous arias of love, betrayal and resignation, set against roiling, dramatic orchestrations, and left the listener drained but awed." He was sometimes referred to as the "Lion of the Blues" and as the "Sinatra of the Blues". His music was also influenced by Nat King Cole.
Bland was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1981, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, and the Memphis Music Hall of Fame in 2012. He received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame described him as "second in stature only to B.B. King as a product of Memphis's Beale Street blues scene".

Soul is a feeling. Funk is a way of life. For Rickey Calloway it's a truth that cannot be denied. For over half a century, his live shows and recordings have changed the whole vibration of the Earth.
Soul Sourcers will of course know his "Tell Me," and "Get It Right," or his work with the Dap Kings, Funk Knight, Jayvilla, and Kay Dee.
In 2010 Rickey linked up with Miami's own Henry Stone Music for his full length King Of Funk album, and on August 9th, 2019, his second release with the label called Break Down officially drops worldwide. It features all new mixes and remixes of vocals, bass, drums, and horns in various forms fully remastered through Jeep Harned's own hand built MCI equipment.
In this exclusive interview never published anywhere else, the great Rickey Calloway talks about meeting fans in France and the United Kingdom, the story behind "Tell Me," and where he got his first guitar...

WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND TELL ME?
Well the original "Tell Me," it was funny how that developed. The house I'm living in now, at that time belonged to my mom. The year was 1968 and I was doing my James Brown impersonation thing, all JB, all the time. I got to thinking one day and said, "I want my own song." So I decided to write my own song. I was playing rhythm guitar and only knew a couple of chords. I had been with Frank Williams and The Rocketeers, woodstocking with those guys, and there were some grooves they were doing live and I took the bass line and heard it in my ears, boom boom baboom boom, and then I took it to another dimension, wrote the lyrics to that groove, and got ready to cut this thing with Mirrow Band, and I didn't have the money for it. I had to borrow money from people I knew and got like 40 here, a hundred there from people who believed in me, who thought, "Maybe this guy Rickey may be something." So I got 600 bucks and called Norm Vincent who at that time was a big shot record guy. I called him and he said, "I been hearing about ya. What can I do for ya?" I said, "I got a song I want to record," and I played a little of it over the phone. He said, "Boy, that sounds kinda good. Bring how much money you got and we'll make it work." So me and the band practiced for two nights and I wrote "Tell Me" sitting right there on my mother's bed and it just kept developing. I forgot the lyrics when we got to the studio. I was so scared I would screw up, but the band hit, and played it, and the instrumental sounded so good, and sweet, and funky that I just started singing and got it on the first take. I was lucky. It was luck and nerves. So, now we had a hot funk song right on the heels of James Brown and we knew it. We didn't think it was gonna be anything. Just a good funk song. I went to John Standberry, a big time singer in Europe...he owned the Jayville record label. He was my mentor. He was mentoring a lot of guys. helping everybody. He said, "I'm coming over." I had nowhere to play the tape, the big old studio tape I had in my possession. He took the copy to put on reel to reel and left me the master, and two hours later I got a call. He said, "Rickey, you got a hit. I gotta get the master, send it off, get the label on it..." I didn't know nothing about that stuff. He did his thing and sent it off. When it came back I was really upset. He spelled my name wrong. There was a misprint on the first 500 records. I was real upset. He said, "Don't worry, we'll do another pressing." We went to the DJ's and they started playing it. Lots of local airplay. Got some offers from like Bel Aire Records. They wanted to put me on contract, but I was too young. I stayed in school. The record had its own destiny. And that was in 1968 and until today it has changed so many times, so many mixes, like with a band out of Canada called the Soul Motivators. I did a version with Funk Knight Records. Kenny Dope did his own mix. I really love that mix. There's one from Kay Dee Record. "Tell Me" has opened up a lot of doors and it's the reason I got to London and France in 2017 and 2018 and places like Detroit and New York, and if not for that probably none of this would have happened.

HOW DID YOU GAIN SO MANY FANS IN THE UK AND THROUGHOUT EUROPE?
That's heavy. In fact, If you really wanna know the truth, I'm still having trouble dealing with that one. You got this poor guy (me) who is cleaning sidewalks in Jacksonville, Florida just to make a dime, and I get on an airplane, land in the UK, go through customs, and all of a sudden I got drivers and everyone else wanting autographs and taking pictures, at the hotel, at the show I got people guarding my dressing room and I'm like, "What the heck?" I had to pinch myself. I was just back home digging a ditch in my back yard, covered in mud. At home it's like no one respects you. Then I'm on British Airways being treated like a star. I become a different person. I'm not stuck on myself or feel I'm above anybody, but I do appreciate people stopping me in the street. Some lady stopped me in France and wanted to marry me. It's really weird and I love it. I was actually supposed to go to France this month, but some things came up and I had to tell the promoter that we're gonna come back to this. There's a big documentary coming out in the UK about Southern Soul Funk and they wanna fly me back out there for a blast if you will and I'm looking forward to that.

WHEN DID YOU PICK UP THE GUITAR?
I got my first guitar at a pawn shop because I was always intrigued by that James Brown B9 Funk. I never heard a funk groove like that. other songs use majors, and minors, but funk you have to structure your fingers another way. So I got the cheapest broken guitar in the pawn shop for ten dollars, brought it home half way tuned and didn't know how to play a thing. I went to a guitar player named Lorenzo Brazzo and asked him to teach me. He showed me like three notes and I played them over and over. I went back and showed him and he said, "Boy, you catch on fast." He said, "I'ma show you C Major, then G, then F, and those are your basic structures." You can play basically anything with those chords. So then I bought Mel Bay's Beginner's guitar book, which has every which way to do your fingers. I learned D Minor, and E Minor, and how to stay in the key of C. I self taught myself. I was listening to a lot of James Brown and beginning to play those grooves, learning by ear, playing the Temptations and everything else..."My Girl," "Losing You," "Cloud Nine," "Papa Was A Rolling Stone," and everybody's music.....so if I ever can't dance and sing, at least I can play the guitar. I'm still having fun. I pick up my famous black guitar and teach it to my grandson. He seems to be serious about it. And sometimes if I feel real good at about three or four in the morning I get up and start riffing. I grab my guitar while everybody is asleep and everybody starts waking up, getting water, going to the refrigerator. They love to see and hear me play.

Junior Walker Biography Preview (Wikipedia)

Autry DeWalt Mixon Jr. (June 14, 1931 – November 23, 1995), known professionally as Junior Walker, was an American saxophonist and vocalist who recorded for Motown during the 1960s.
His career started when he developed his own band in the mid-1950s as the Jumping Jacks. His longtime friend and drummer Billy Nicks (1935–2017) formed his own group, the Rhythm Rockers. Periodically, Nicks would sit in on Jumping Jack's shows, and Walker would sit in on the Rhythm Rockers shows.
Nicks obtained a permanent gig at a local TV station in South Bend, Indiana, and asked Walker to join him and keyboard player Fred Patton permanently. Nicks asked Willie Woods (1936–1997), a local singer, to perform with the group; Woods would learn how to play guitar. When Nicks was drafted into the United States Army, Walker convinced the band to move from South Bend to Battle Creek, Michigan.[1] While performing in Benton Harbor, Walker found a drummer, Tony Washington, to replace Nicks. Eventually, Fred Patton left the group, and Victor Thomas stepped in. The original name, The Rhythm Rockers, was changed to The All Stars"l. Walker's style was inspired by jump blues and early R&B, particularly players like Louis Jordan, Earl Bostic, and Illinois Jacquet.
The group was spotted by Johnny Bristol, and he recommended them to Harvey Fuqua, in 1961, who had his own record labels. Once the group started recording on the Harvey label, their name was changed to Jr. Walker All Stars. The name was modified again when Fuqua's labels were taken over by Motown's Berry Gordy, and Jr. Walker & the All Stars became members of the Motown family, recording for their Soul imprint in 1964...

The All-Dayer has been a part of the Northern Soul scene since the early 70s. It evolved at a time when rare club soul was moving away from its roots in Detroit and experimenting with a new beat that coalesced at the legendary Manchester Ritz. The Ritz reigned supreme as the country’s most forward-thinking All-Dayer, attracting the top DJs including its founder Neil Rushton, Richard Searling, Colin Curtis and Ian Levine. Curtis and Levine had whole-heartedly embraced, and came to define, the Modern Soul movement at Blackpool Mecca’s Highland Room. They brought to the Ritz their own unique music blend and their loyal following. Searling had an equally upfront music policy but continued to mix it up with the best of his Northern discoveries which attracted the Casino faithful to the Ritz. This created a melting pot of the very best of the underground soul scene, attractive to a wider, younger audience, leading to a national interest in Soul All-Dayers, and eventually heralding the rave era.
All 16 All-Dayer tracks on this newly curated compilation have been remastered from analogue tapes and original vinyl. It is pressed on audiophile heavyweight 180g vinyl housed in a single sleeve complete with new liner notes. All-Dayer joins a growing catalogue of premium music on the Club Soul imprint.

Colin Curtis joins Deptford Northern Soul Club at YES, Manchester - Influential British DJ Colin Curtis will play on the 13th July alongside Deptford Northern Soul Club and Poppy Turner. Known for his involvement in in the Northern Soul scene and his championing of black music, he's back with a bang!
Colin, who's booked to headline Gilles Peterson’s ‘We Out Here festival’ in Cambridge will return to Manchester where in the 1960’s he first started DJ’ing at the famed ‘Golden Torch’ all-nighters. Curtis also graced the decks of Blackpool’s Mecca where he introduced contemporary styles of African-American music such as; disco, funk and jazz funk to a generation. Along with fellow DJ Ian Levine Curtis is credited with being one of the first DJs to introduce mixing to British nightclubs. This technique, which had been pioneered by DJ Francis Grasso in the clubs of NYC, enabled DJs to spin non-stop records changing UK dance culture forever.
In later years Curtis began a residency at famous Manchester club ‘Rafters’ cementing himself as one of the UK’s leading DJs. In 1986 he became one of the first to introduce New York 'hip-hop' and ‘electro' along with early ‘house’ from Chicago. Curtis’ musical legacy has inspired a new wave of dance music spearheaded by DJ Gilles Peterson who’s eager to put Colin back on the map! He will join Deptford Northern Soul Club and Manchester’s own; Poppy Turner at YES, in their ‘Pink Room’. This is a once in a life time event and is not to be missed.

WAKE UP B/W YOU’RE WHAT’S NEEDED IN MY LIFE
Following up on the massive success of Lee Fields recently released full length “It Rains Love” we drop another 45 for the DJs and collectors. This time showing off two different sides of Lee & The Expressions range.
The A side “Wake Up” is Lee’s heavy duty, drum driven, anthemic tune for the times. Fields calls out the highly over-used and abused term of the current presidency “fake news.” Over a hard as nails sound bed courtesy of The Expressions he goes on asking people to wake up and not let this propaganda sway them from knowing what is right and wrong.
The B side “You’re What’s Needed In My Life” is a gushing testament to the beauty of love. Solidifying his title as the Professor of Love it’s almost like he’s writing your girl’s valentine for you. Going beyond how happy the woman he is singing to makes him and telling of how she makes everyone she meets happier. This two-sider is about as classic as possible, a heavy duty funk banger on the A side, and nothing but love on the ballad B side. Another classic and timeless offering from the one and only Lee Fields.

I doubt it was just a moment-in-time thing. Thirty years on, my memory of first hearing Someday echo across the dancefloor at an all-nighter and stopping this young teenager dead in his tracks has not faded. It wasn’t a recording which necessarily broke the mould upon ‘rediscovery’ on the early 1980s northern soul scene. The fresh open-minded approach and healthy appreciation for musical diversity had already seen to that, whether it be for mid-tempo, beat ballads, latin soul, early R&B or others - and the northern scene was none the worse for it. For me, the sheer power and haunting moodiness of Someday was a far cry from the sounds which initially attracted me to the soul scene. It embodied the new game, at least certainly marked a pivotal point in the future direction of my personal musical appreciation.
It was probably around 2012 when I really started to dig into the history of The Tempests. The drive was not only the quality of soul music output by this band and the popularity of their recordings. I was conscious that knowledge of the band’s history was limited, despite The Tempests being such a regionally popular act of that era. Connecting with Van Coble, bass player and co-writer of I Don’t Want To Lose Her helped to rectify some of that. With his assistance, I initially pulled the story together in brief as part of a wider collection of biographies for the book It’s Better To Cry.
Through ongoing communications with Van and other musicians in North Carolina, it was clear that there was so much more of the Tempests story to be told. To capture it all, working with Van Coble and drummer Nelson Lemmond (who sadly passed away during the latter part of the writing process) was essential in giving the project real momentum, supplemented by some thorough research and connection with other surviving band members, relatives and industry figures.
So, seven years on, here it is. This isn’t exclusively a “northern soul” book, nor is it just a “beach music” book; though the content will appeal to serious record collectors and fans of both genres, as well as to those curious to learn more about how soul music took hold in the south eastern states. As the back cover says:
“….In the mid-1960s, North Carolina was feverishly embracing the soul explosion. From emerging local R&B acts came The Tempests, a racially integrated band which stood out from the rest. Featuring an African-American lead singer with a commanding vocal presence and talented white musicians from a range of backgrounds, their powerful soulful delivery and tight rhythm and horn sections could not be ignored. The Tempests attracted the attention of the music industry through energetic on-stage performances and quality studio work. They would soon become a booking agent’s go-to for sharing the billing with national soul stars on tour in the south east. Part heavily researched narrative and part first-hand oral history, The Tempests: A Carolina Soul Story explores how soul music took hold in the Carolinas, the origins and influences of the band, their recording period with two major labels, hectic touring schedules, and the inevitable split.
But that’s only half the tale. Those early experiences shaped careers in song-writing, studio production and musicianship in popular music which continue to influence others to this day. Then there is the latter-day rediscovery of the Smash-Mercury recordings by a UK underground soul scene and formal recognition of The Tempests’ contribution to soul music following induction into the Carolina Beach Music Hall of Fame…”

Side A is a jaw dropping ballad that harbours familiar echoes of Etta James and Barbara Lynn. The Freddy Benton penned 'Talk of The Town' is almost certainly destined to become a future classic. Meanwhile, Side B reveals a full-on uptempo dancer with a tight funky edge, harmonies and a blistering horn break that would make even Detroit maestro Mike Terry stop and take notice.
Both sides of this release are lyrical and musical perfection at its very highest.
At the core The Love Rights are big-voiced sisters Amber and Stephanie, with Amber taking lead duties on both tracks here.
This, their first release hits hard with a pair of disparate sides that cover a lot of ground. The “A” side Talk of The Town is a firm ballad in the oldies tradition of the East Side Stories compilations and doesn’t even attempt to hide the heavy influence of other big voices like Linda Jones and Barbara Lynn. After a superficial listen you’ll be forgiven for just appreciating a superlative slowie, however Amber’s aggressively authentic female perspective echoes empowerment anthems like You Can't Take It, and I’m A Good Woman by the aforementioned.

Flip the disc and now you’ve got something so distinctly different, It’s Time For A Change hits with a punch of brass and positivity and follows through with an infectious dance-tempo. As soon as you fall into the groove, you’re hit with a funk cacophony that exactly fits the songs message of affirmative transformation. This release is as lyrically poignant as it is musically perfect and sums up why the Kimberlite team are so proud to be working with The Love Rights!

Wigan Today newspaper reporting the news that Richard Searling has been awarded the British Empire Medal in this weeks Queens Birthday Honours
'Richard Searling, who was the resident deck-spinner at the famous Northern Soul venue for seven years starting in 1974, said he was honoured to receive the accolade.
He received the BEM for services to the soul music industry and community in the north of England.
The 66-year-old was put forward for the honour by listeners to his radio shows.'

A tale of copyright issues, long (and I do mean long) time readers may remember back in 2004 a book by photographer John Barrett was published containing many stylish and unique photos of the then current Northern Soul Scene
The blurb on Soul Source back in 2004 went like the below and you can also re-visit the original 2004 article via the link following the quote
A new book out now. 223 pages full of black and white images taken on today's Northern Soul scene, at venues all around the country, John Barret's stunning photos capture the people and the whole aspect and feel of the Northern Soul Scene perfectly . Featuring a foreword by Dave Godin this book is the result of two years work by John Barrett as is detailed in his introduction.
Fast forward 15 years ago and you would think that in these days of strict 'online copyright' practices Mr Barrett's works would have been treated correctly by the major mainstream photo agencies, however it seems that Mr Barrett has an issue with one of the major players, an issue which spurred him to draft the following letter

Dear Friends
Since the mid 1990s I have been documenting, using reportage photographic techniques a British sub culture called Northern Soul. The visual research culminated in a book entitled ‘Keeping the Faith’ ISBN no: 09-548982-0-6.
The photographic collection toured the UK in various galleries and venues and the theme was very popular throughout the UK.
Just over a week ago I was following links to themed photographs on Pinterest and I noticed several of my images were shown on their website. The links led me to the Getty Images photographic library and I counted 23 photographic images of mine that were for sale on their site at £375.

As you may notice they have a PYMCA brand attached and details of the Getty images content Licence Agreement suggesting that they hold the full rights to my photographs. I believe Getty obtained my photos from PYMCA when I had a gallery show in 2007. At no stage did I give them any licence to use my work and never been contacted to agree to this nor have I ever received any monies from any party associated with on-line photo libraries.

I was given permission to publish the people captured in the photographs but Getty has never contacted anybody about gaining permissions in their quest to obtain immense profits via breaking all copyright laws.

If you can support me by passing this on to friends and contacts to expose these Getty practices then it will help myself and other photographers and ultimately protect the individuals shown in the images.

You can email Getty direct if you feel you need to. I cannot afford to pay for lawyers to represent me and Getty therefore does not respond to my correspondence.

Saturday just gone saw the release of the vinyl double Soul Explosion album, which was part of Craft Recordings’ celebration of the 50th anniversary of Stax Records’ “Soul Explosion”
As mentioned Craft are also releasing 30 albums (that's one a day) through out this month of June to commemorate Black History month. Marking the very first digital release of these albums, blurb follows below
In June, to commemorate Black Music Month, Craft will also reissue 30 titles to digital platform marking the very first digital release of these albums. The titles, which will be released one per day throughout the month, include the 1971 concept album Victim Of The Joke? An Opera from acclaimed songwriter and producer David Porter; 1973’s Estelle, Myrna & Sylvia from girl-group the Sweet Inspirations (who backed such acts as Elvis Presley, Dusty Springfield and Aretha Franklin); and A Dramatic Experience, the sophomore album by R&B Music Hall of Fame inductee the Dramatics.
Eleven of these titles (from the likes of the Soul Children, Johnnie Taylor and the Mad Lads) are results of the 1969 Soul Explosion sessions.
Throughout the remainder of 2019, fans can look forward to several curated playlists, contests and additional releases.

Mary Wells Biography (Wikipedia)
Mary Esther Wells (May 13, 1943 – July 26, 1992) was an American singer who helped to define the emerging sound of Motown in the early 1960s. Along with the Supremes, the Miracles, the Temptations, and the Four Tops, Wells was said to have been part of the charge in black music onto radio stations and record shelves of mainstream America, "bridging the color lines in music at the time."
With a string of hit singles composed mainly by Smokey Robinson, including "The One Who Really Loves You"", "Two Lovers" (1962), the Grammy-nominated "You Beat Me to the Punch" (1962) and her signature hit, "My Guy" (1964), she became recognized as "The Queen of Motown" until her departure from the company in 1964, at the height of her popularity. She was one of Motown's first singing superstars...

Joe Stevenson was born in 1930 in North Philly, and from a young age was passionate about music, graduating from playing & writing to producing, whilst holding down two jobs in the post office and as a school teacher. By the end of 1960, Joe had built a studio – Imperial Sound Studios at 447 N. 60th St, Philadelphia and was putting out 45’s on his own “Pentagon” label, and from 1965, in association with partners, Bill Lucas and Ed Kelley, was producing and putting out releases on the “Del Val” label.

MD records, in association with Joe Stevenson bring you two tracks, recorded at Imperial Sound Studios that sadly did not make it to vinyl at the time. Vince Apollo (Marvin Brown) had recorded, and released “I Bear Witness” on Joe’s “Pentagon” label in 1967, but had also cut a duet version with his sister Connie, as the “Dynamic Siblings”, which never made it past the acetate stage until now!!!

Coupled with this, we have Karla Denning’s “Funky” take on the “Vince Apollo” tune, recorded in 1971 and again, not getting past the acetate stage until now!!

Today May 31st see's the official reissue release of the double LP Stax Soul Explosion. Now available for the the first time on vinyl since 1969
The release is part of Craft Recordings’ celebration of the 50th anniversary of Stax Records’ “Soul Explosion” the Memphis label’s defining hits collection.
As well as this release the schedule also includes including digitally reissuing 30 titles in 30 days throughout June to commemorate Black Music Month.
“Soul Explosion” refers to the period in 1969 when Stax was rebuilding itself as an independent label, after leaving Atlantic Records and its music catalog behind.

Under the guidance of co-owner Al Bell, the label proceeded to rebuild and release an impressive collection of 27 albums and 30 singles in just a handful of months—a period known as “Soul Explosion” and by the end of 1969, the label reaffirmed its place as a soul powerhouse.

This event started up in 1995 so it is one of the longest running, same venue Soul nites in the North. I started djing there in 1996 and I haven't missed one month of playing Motown , Soul and Northern Soul to really fantastic appreciative crowds over all of those years. Unfortunately Link4life who manage the Heywood Civic Centre on behalf of Rochdale Council have hiked the room hire price up way beyond an affordable amount. I have therefore had to give them notice that we cannot keep the event at their premises any longer. I realise this may be sad for a lot of people but just like the Phoenix rising from the ashes, we will move the event to another location and will call ourselves the 'BURY SOUL CLUB'.
Venue will be relocated to the Polish Centre in Bury. Meanwhile this will be the final one at the Heywood Civic on Saturday 1st June. A lot of fond memories for a lot of people and the odd marriage gained from meeting at this place ... so thank you to all of those people and hope to see you all on the night. We are also offering the chance for every DJ that has played Soul there over the last 24 years to bring along their Favourite Soul Record of All Time and they can play it on stage during the night (No floor clearers if possible....we know what you are like ha ha)
