Black Panthers, The Lumpen and Marvin Gaye

Black Panthers, The Lumpen, and Marvin Gaye
When Bottom & Company and Redbone had finished as ‘openers’ at The Forum, Los Angeles in May 1974, Marvin Gaye came on stage to a 32-piece orchestra conducted by Gene Page together with the back-up quartet Ladies Choice(ii). Marvin started with ‘Trouble Man’ and finished with ‘What’s Going On’.

Michael Torrance was one of those back-up singers in Ladies Choice, and also on the “Marvin Gaye Live LP” that was recorded live at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, California. He also became a writer at Motown during the late 70’s (ii). https://www.discogs.com/High-Inergy-Skate-To-The-Rhythm/master/559162

What follows is not a scholarly review of the political struggle facing the Black Panther Party. It is merely to highlight some of the musical association of those times with that Party. If not all, then some people who search out the history of Soul/Funk will already know much of this. However, perhaps those that follow R&B, Soul and Northern Soul, and other soul genres might be unaware and even surprised by it.

Michael Torrance was also first and foremost a representative of the Black Panther Party, and in the quartet that was The Lumpen. The original members were Michael Torrance, Bill Calhoun, Clark (Santa Rita) Bailey-Santa Rita Jail is in Alameda County, and I assume Clark had spent some time there. The other group member was James Mott. The Lumpen was essentially the Black Panther Party Revolutionary Singing Group. The existence of which only really surfaced when Rickey Vincent(iii) learned from Walter Turner (a journalist at KPFA) that the Panthers had a band called The Lumpen.(iv)
A year before The Lumpen’s arrival – 50 years ago in 1969, the Panthers' protest at Olympia mirrored one that had occurred in California's capital Sacramento in 1967 against a similar gun law known as the Mulford Act.

Picture(v): February 28th 1969 Two Black Panthers, part of a group who marched up the steps of the State Capital building, Olympia, being confronted by Captain R.J. Ranney.

Under such circumstances, it’s hardly surprising that the movement also “used music as a means to not only document their struggle but also to educate, motivate and inspire people to resistance(vi) - Michael Torrance.
In Sept 1969 Vault Records(vii) took a project on to record Elaine Brown Deputy Minister of Information for the Black Panthers. Out of that came “Seize the Time” LP, and Jack Lewerke (Vault prexy) gave 500 copies to the Black Panther Party for promotion https://www.discogs.com/Elaine-Brown-Seize-The-Time-Black-Panther-Party/master/394499 . Proceeds from the LP went towards maintaining its program of providing free breakfasts for ghetto children.
And again in 1973 Elaine Brown delivered “No Time” [‘One Time’ on “Seize the Time” LP]  “Until We’re Free” - Black Forum B20000F. Black Forum recordings get scarce notice in any anthology of the Motown label. The Motown imprint released eight albums between 1970 and 1973, including a Martin Luther King, Jr. speech denouncing the Vietnam War.
As for The Lumpen in terms of recording? - just one released single “Free Bobby Now” [refers to the plight of Black Panther leader Bobby Seale(viii) who was in jail] / “No More”, both on Seize The Time label ‎BPP-4501.
They toured, singing at community centres, clubs, and rallies. Mostly in the San Francisco area like at Merritt College, Oakland.

There are two never-released sides by The Lumpen that had been recorded at a 1970 concert at Merritt College(ix) - “Thomas Wallace and drummer Minor Williams anchored the song with a groove borrowed from (James) Brown's "There Was a Time." A version of Curtis Mayfield's 1965 freedom anthem "People Get Ready" followed, but instead of singing about not needing a ticket to board a train that's coming, as Mayfield had, The Lumpen substituted the lines revolution's come and your only ticket is a loaded gun”.
Others played their part.

As an inmate, Ike White was heading a committee which booked outside entertainment to play at San Quentin prison. In 1971 he helped organise “Soul [Consciousness] Day” (which became renamed as Malcolm X Day at San Quentin”). Curtis Mayfield, Muhammad Ali, War, Jimmy Witherspoon and Eric Burden were invited(x) (xi). It was a day-long event organised by the prisoners’ organisation, with the help of the newly formed San Quentin Prison Chapter of the Black Panther Party (BPP).

There is a further account that Curtis Mayfield was actually the headliner. What the prison authorities were unaware of was the supporting band was none other than The Lumpen and their band the Freedom Messengers(xii).

The Lumpen had lasted a year and broke soon after in 1971.

Curtis Mayfield also had sides like “Mighty Mighty (Spade and Whitey)”, The Impressions had “Choice of Colors”, The Temptations “Message from a Black Man”, and  James Brown “Say It Loud, I’m Black and I’m Proud”.

Ed Note: I’m white. From the United Kingdom. And have no direct experience of what these times were like for America and its people. As an occasional music article submitter for https://www.soul-source.co.uk/ this short piece just brings together some interesting facts about the music associated with the Black Panther Party during this historical time in the late 1960’s early 70’s.

Diggin' Deep - New Release - Sir Ted Ford 45

The latest 45 from Diggin' Deep is now avail for pre-order...
Details, video and blurb follow right below

DD 004A  Sir Ted Ford ‘Right Now'

DD 004B Sir Ted Ford ‘I Can’t Give You Up’

The latest 45 is an astounding double-sider that Diggin’ Deep are extremely proud to be able to bring to you.
Two tremendous Soul sides, each with a different flavour, though both are classic ‘Muscle Shoals’ tracks, emanating from the legendary FAME studios, Muscle Shoals Alabama, USA.
To try to describe the topside of the new 45, entitled quite simply ‘Right Now’ I don’t think we’ll be able to really do it justice, except to say it’s without doubt the best unreleased, unheard, Southern soul dancer we’ve encountered in years.

‘Right Now’ by Sir Ted Ford is the type of sound that ticks all the right boxes and will be sought after by collectors of Northern, Crossover and Southern Soul alike! It’s really that good.
This exclusive Diggin’ Deep issue is its first ever release in any format and is out now for a very limited time on one of our special edition vinyl 45’s.

For the flipside we have chosen to release Sir Ted’s killer blue soul opus ‘I Can’t Give You Up’. Long regarded as a Deep Soul classic, this vocal tour de force was only ever made available on the small Budd label, released some 50 years ago. To many it’s the epitome of Muscle Shoals Deep Soul and recorded (as with the topside) at Rick Hall’s Fame Studios in 1969. The backing is provided by the famous ‘Swampers’ and we are sure it will leave all true music fans breathless, behind the tortured and ‘heart wrenching’ vocal of Sir Ted Ford.
Both Sides are written by Sir Ted Ford and are a testament to this artist’s undoubted and wide-ranging talent.

Diggin’ Deep are honoured to be able to bring you these recordings and are planning more from Sir Ted Ford, later in the year.
Please take a few minutes to listen to the promotional video. We hope you’ll agree, this is a 45 that every Soul fan will want to have in their collection.
DD004 collector’s release is a limited pressing @ just £12 each plus postage and packing.

Avoid Disappointment. Pre-order now, while stocks last.
Note: Only one copy per person. First come, first served.

Taken from a session at the famous Virtue studios, it's a track by a previously unknown soul group called "The Fun & Funk Family" and the track is "Shouldn't Have Said Goodbye" and it's pretty darned good!!!

Bizarrely on the same tape is Ronnie Walker's release for "Gala" records, but Ron had no recollection of this group.

Impulse - You Changed Me/What’s That Sound - Kandi

Impulse  “You Changed Me/What’s That Sound”   Kandi
Two previously unissued tracks released as a vanity project in the fall of 2018. “You Changed Me” is an excellent modern soul dancer already being championed by Dj’s in the know, while “What’s That Sound” is a more funk influenced outing. Copies available at £12.00 each plus £3.00 postage (1strecorded, UK) overseas at cost. (Sorry only one copy per person). To reserve PM or E-mail: david.welding@blueyonder.co.uk
 The Groups History:
Impulse were (and still are) a group of Milwaukee, Wisconsin musicians who during 1976 migrated to Oakland California where they hooked up with a fellow  Brewtown producer and recording artist, one Harvey Scales. Scales himself in 1976, through his earlier local hit “Glamour Girl” (recorded for the local Sauk City, Cuca Label) and a string of recordings for Lenny Lacour’s Magic Touch label. Of which “Get Down” had bought him both National and International attention through it being picked up Atlantic Records was at the height of his powers, following the success of Johnny Taylors Columbia Records platinum hit “Disco Lady” a  song Scales co-wrote.

Under the auspice of Scales, Impulse began recording a self titled debut album project for a proposed release on the Casablanca label. This release for whatever reason never materialised and it is from the surviving master tapes that the above two tracks have been taken.  The Casablanca setback although disappointing would not be the end of The Impulse story, the groups lead singer /songwriter John Gee had begun performing secular music in the late 60’s with another local Milwaukee outfit , The Chef’s  and had sung lead on their  1974 Funk outing “Mr Machine” on their own  Pro-Gress label. John credited as a solo artist recorded (in Milwaukee) the 1980 release “Not Enough Love Makin’/You Are That Man (Why Don’t You Be That Man)” which gained a release on the Oakland C.A Pashlo label. Followed by the 1985 modern soul dance favourite “So Good To Me/Just Get On” recorded under the artist name of Jon Pierre Gee for his own Kandi Inc label, as 45, 12” and cd project, returning in 2005 with the Ah’vant Soul concept cd album project.
Throughout all these projects Jon has used and enjoyed performing with the original members of Impulse, Michael Reese (Rhodes Piano and Background vocals), Cedrick Rupert (Lead and Rhythm Guitar), Jeffrey Williamson (Drums and background vocals) and Robin Gregory (Bass and background vocals. These guys are still performing today (2019) with the exception of drummer, Jeffrey Williamson who passed away during 2015, his replacement being Coley Jackson.

Jay Nemor & Electrified - Mother Got A Way - Tesla Groove Records

Tesla Groove a record label born out of Cannonball Records founded by Alberto Zanini in Italy. Cannonball found success initially with the release of Big Lee Dowell and “What I Done Wrong” which was a massive dancefloor winner. Further excellent releases cemented the labels place in the Soul market across Europe and indeed the World, often taking basic demo recordings and adding backing from the labels own in house band with authentic 60s recording equipment, giving listeners a sound as near to the original records as possible. Despite the success for the label Alberto wanted more and from this yearning Tesla Groove was set up with Dave Thorley to record and promote more contemporary artists and give them a platform to showcase their talents.
Alberto assembled a quality in house band, arranging and production team. Luca Zannoni joined the arrangement patrol in full service, Drummer Cesare Barbi, guitar maestro Richi “the Kid” Landini, Davide Rossi, top level bass player and now in charge of all the final mixing at both Cannonball Records and Tesla Groove International Recordings and, last but not least , they welcomed onboard one of the most powerful and professional brass sections that ever stepped on an Italian stage, Corrado Terzi and Enrico Guastalla. This team is better known as Electrified.

It was then that Jay Nemor came to the attention of the team. They listened to his previous material and compositions he had ready, they liked what they heard and saw and promptly signed Jay to the new label in January 2018.
Born Jason Nemor Harden on the 4th August 1971 in Houston, Texas. He is now better known as Jay Nemor, a multi-talented artist, not only a quality vocalist but a consummate songwriter, composer, producer and also skilled with both saxophone and keyboards.
Jay was a professional basketball player in the States, the sport would then take him to Europe where he still resides with his family.   It was whilst in Iceland playing Basketball that his love of music was sparked and the seeds of a career in Soul music were sown. He borrowed some keyboards which he learnt to play and composed several songs. In 2004 he teamed up with former Motown artist Kenya to form Kenya Nemor later to become Kenya and Nemor. As well as this duet he would work as a session musician as well as more composing and producing various acts in varying genres.   A move to Oslo and later Gothenburg to try and further his career on a bigger stage with a larger market.
Jay was influenced by the likes of Earth Wind and Fire, Marvin Gaye, The Four Tops, temptations, Bobby Womack and many more, his style is loyal to these influences, typically old school in style but also right up to date with today’s R&B/Soul market.

2018 saw Tesla Groove and Jay’s first release. Jay’s rich silky-smooth soulful vocals were put to self-penned lyrics, “There Are No Winners”.   Jay’s early influences, artists who had a strong social conscience and whose lyrics conveyed a strong social message within, often about the injustices in this world, show throughout Jay’s work, singing “Even When You Win You Lose”.
The first 45 was a good solid start for the label receiving extensive airplay across Europe with support from celebrities such as Craig Charles whose audience is massive.

Alberto, Dave and Electrified worked hard with Jay over the months and the result will be both Tesla Groove’s and Jay’s second release. Again self penned with production arrangement and musicianship supplied by Electrified, “Mother Got A Way” is the resulting single. As with Jay’s first 45 for Tesla Groove, it is another song with a social message, Jay’s soulful vocal and the Italian sophistication of Electrified, telling is about the need for all the latest fads and fashion right there and then, it tells us to find a way to help ourselves, you won’t get no help from others.
Look out for the release in February at Teslagroove.com and your usual stockists.
Hopefully, 2019 will be a fruitful one for Tesla and Jay and other artists if the right ones can be found. An album for Jay is already in the planning stages and hopefully some live appearances as well. The future is looking bright for Tesla Groove!

Win - The Goldwax Years Spencer Wiggins - Kent Vinyl Lp

The first competition of 2019 and it's a good one..
We have up for grabs a still sealed copy of a recent Kent Lp. All you have to do to be in with a chance of winning this fine lp is just follow the simple instructions that follow the lp info.

The Goldwax Years - Spencer Wiggins - LP Kent 511
A vinyl album featuring 14 of the great southern soul singer’s finest Goldwax recordings.

Listen while you read

Blurb
Although Spencer Wiggins first made the R&B charts with his Fame 45 ‘Double Lovin’’ in 1970, it is his eight Goldwax singles, released in the latter half of the 60s, for which he is most famous among soul fans. Veering from deep melancholic ballads to raucous uptempo groovers, those 45s epitomise southern soul.
Southern soul is a close cousin of the blues, and ‘Lover’s Crime’, Spencer’s first single on Goldwax’s Bandstand USA subsidiary, was an early Isaac Hayes composition of that ilk. ‘Sweet Sixteen’, which was unreleased until 1977, is a full-on blues, presumably shelved by Goldwax as they wanted to keep Spencer known as a soul singer, even though he excels on the number. A strong country influence is apparent on ‘I Never Loved A Woman (The Way I Love You)’ which rivals Aretha Franklin’s Atlantic breakthrough single from a couple of years earlier. ‘Once In A While (Is Better Than Never At All)’, written by Goldwax boss Quinton Claunch, an ex-country singer, and songwriter George Jackson’s ‘Old Friend’ are also in the country bag.
The dramatic ballad ‘Up Tight Good Woman’, penned by Dan Penn, Spooner Oldham and Jimmy Johnson, is probably Spencer’s best-known recording and remains a highlight of his live performances. Penn and Oldham also provided ‘Take Me Just As I Am’, another standout track. ‘He’s Too Old’ and ‘I’m A Poor Man’s Son’ are vibrant, warm-hearted numbers taken at a jaunty pace, although still very much southern soul, whereas ‘Lonely Man’ is the only song with hints of a Detroit influence, and has consequently cost collectors appreciably more than the norm.
Spencer is primarily a preacher today but his 2010 appearance at the Cleethorpes rare soul weekender demonstrated he is still a great performer. More recently he completed a successful two-date visit to London and Manchester with his brother Percy.

The New Creations - The Fish Song - Soul Junction Records

Press Release:   The New Creation   “The Fish Song/Elijah Knows”   SJ541
 Release Date: Monday 28thJanuary 2019

The New Creation were a five piece ensemble made up of family members Robert James Randle (Aka Rasheed Shakoor Sr) his son Keith Randle (aka Rasheed Shakoor Jr) their nephew/cousin Mel Houston. Mel’s stepfather William Cooper (aka Wali Ali) and a fifth unrelated member only remembered as Wayne E-2X.
The creator of The New Creation was William Cooper a guitarist who had previously worked with Norman Whitfield at Motown and had toured with The Undisputed Truth and The Jackson Five. He had also been employed by HB Barnum as part of Areatha Franklin’s touring band an association that would be relevant in The New Creation’s story.

The concept of The New Creation began sometime during 1973 when Robert James Randle penned the song “The Fish Song” ( credited as Robert 51-X) and William Cooper penned the song “Elijah Knows” amongst other material that never really got past the demo stage. Adding teenage cousins Mel Houston (Bass Guitar) and Keith Randle (Conga drums) and Wayne E-2X , The New Creation began performing through their affiliation to the African America political and religious movement , The Nation Of Islam with no lesser a person than Muhammad Ali, as a support act to his Celebrity Boxing Promotion Tours. They also toured as a support act to one of Philadelphia’s most well known soul groups, The Delfonic’s.
During the summer of 1974, under the tutelage of HB Barnum, The New Creation entered the Devonshire Recording Studio’s in North Hollywood to lay down the basic tracks of the above two songs with HB later adding the horn arrangements.  The group pressed 2000 copies (plus a later 500) on their own Salaam label. They initially began to seek out radio airplay, unfortunately this wasn’t to be too forthcoming as the majority of radio stations considered “The Fish Song” to have been recorded as a commercial song , (which the group had no intention of) and demanded extortionate fees to promote. Therefore The New Creation were left with no choice but to promote their own product which they did by mail order and appearances throughout Los Angeles, Chicago, Denver (Colorado), Cleveland and New York selling their 45, for $5 each complete with a homemade promotional brochure.

With the groups growing popularity came the need for more rehearsals which sometimes lasted till three in the morning the teenage members of the group parents feared this would compound upon their High School work and so pulled them out of the group. They were replaced briefly by older members before the group broke up for good.
The New Creation’s “The Fish Song/Elijah Knows” is now a highly regarded and sort after 45 with sweet and harmony soul collector’s in Europe and it’s native USA.

Eugene Thomas New Release - Out Now

EUGENE THOMAS NEW RELEASE!
The name of Eugene Thomas has become well known in soul circles ever since it was discovered that he was the lead vocalist on that wonderful Northern Soul double sided classic by Epitome Of Sound – “You Don’t Love Me b/w Where Were You”, which was recorded at Venture Studios in Bound Brook New Jersey and subsequently released on Sandbag Records in 1967.  Fast forward an amazing 52 years and the author of both sides of that classic 45 Robert Paladino, has recently released a 45 and here, hot its heels is a solo effort from Mr Thomas.
Written and co-produced by Eugene himself, Eugene Thomas – “I’m Through With You b/w Lovely Lady” Sweet Beat Records (RW1805), combines two excellent soul sides that do a great job of tipping their hat to the golden era of 60s soul.
The A Side is a pounding up-tempo dancer relating the story against a love affair gone wrong as Eugene ditches his two-timing woman. Full blown, on the fours, Northern Soul with a crackin’ sax break, if it garners the right exposure I’d imagine it will get great dancefloor reaction from the dancers.  The flip is another ‘bounce along’ dancer that highlights Eugene’s dexterity within his song-writing skills as he embraces a new love. Musically it’s another performance that would seem ideally suited to the Northern Soul dancefloors.
The 45 is available from all the usual outlets in UK and US.
Here's a snippet of both sides:

BKE Records Launch 2019 - Brothers Of Soul

BROTHERS OF SOUL to launch BKE RECORDS in 2019. Hayley Records to distribute in UK and Europe.
After some delays and several hiccups The Brothers of Soul – Fred Bridges, Richard Knight and Robert Eaton are to launch their own label in UK and Europe.
BKE Records, named after their surnames, will feature material either written or performed by the trio during their illustrious performing and writing careers beginning in the early 1960s and progressing into the later 1970s.
Group member Fred Bridges explained the decision. ‘We didn’t look after the publishing side of our tunes like we should have done back in the day and we trusted people who said they would look after us but we got nothing in royalties for any of our songs. So I thought we should release our stuff so that we can finally get paid.’
The first two releases feature recordings made at Lou Beatty’s La Beat studio on 14th Street in Detroit’s lower east side. According to Bridges his involvement in the operation was immediate ‘ I lived on the next street over from Beatty’s place, on 15th, and when I first saw the huge plate glass window at the front of his studio with all these microphones hanging down I knew he was recording, so I went straight in and told him about me and Richard and told him to put me in charge, which he did!
The first act we worked with was Albert Williams. We wrote three tunes for him ‘I am nothing’, ‘Brand new love’  and ‘Try them’ but they only used the first two on his record.’
The first BKE release will feature ‘I am nothing’ and ‘Try them’  ‘Al Williams was a tough kinda street guy. He was only around 5’8” but built. People wouldn’t mess with him but I did. He had a good voice but had trouble with his pitch so me and Richard worked on his delivery ‘cause we produced the session and knew what we wanted from our songs. I played piano on those sessions and Don Davis played guitar. George McGregor played drums. Lou Beatty liked the tunes so he kept us on.’
BKE 001 AL WILLIAMS ‘I am nothing’ b/w ‘Try them’

The second BKE release features a relatively unknown group who just happened to be walking down 14th Street when they met Bridges and Knight – The Masqueraders. ‘Yes that was kinda lucky for them and us, I guess. They had come up from Texas to try out at Motown but hadn’t made it when I met them. They didn’t even have return plane tickets they were that sure they’d make it but we got them in and liked their sound and what they could do. Lou Beatty started working with them first then Richard and me took over. We were so good together and really enjoyed working with them.I was the first to bring Mike Terry in to arrange our tunes. I played piano on ‘One more chance’ but we had Johnny Griffith play on ‘ I got the power’ along with some of the best guys in town. Eddie Willis and Dennis Coffey played guitars. We had Babbitt on bass, George McGregor and Mike played with the Powerhouse horns on that tune.’
BKE 002 THE MASQUERADERS ‘I got the power’ b/w ‘One more chance’

Future BKE releases will feature previously unreleased recordings by Brothers of Soul and popular titles by Sandra Phillips, Johnny Robinson, Maxine Brown, The Precisions, Ruby Andrews, Carl Carlton and many others.

All BKE releases will be available on Hayley Records website

Video: Teddy Pendergrass: If you don't know me Trailer

The unforgettable lead vocalist on classic Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes songs such as‘Don’t Leave Me This Way’, ‘If You Don’t Know Me By Now’ and ‘I Miss You’, Teddy subsequently became the first solo male African American artist to record five consecutive platinum albums in the US, but his career was struck by tragedy in 1982 when a car accident left him paralysed at the age of just 31. He later made a triumphant comeback in front of a global audience of 1.9 billion at Live Aid.
Featuring revealing interviews with his family, friends and colleagues alongside industry legends Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, rarely seen archive footage and a soulful soundtrack, this insightful and moving documentary captures Teddy’s rise to fame against the complex backdrop of 1960’s America and his victorious comeback after his life-changing accident.
A compelling tale with surprising twists and turns, the film is an intimate portrait of one of the greatest singers of his generation. Describing Teddy’s meteoric rise from his tough ghetto childhood in Philadelphia to becoming a key member of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes and his subsequent solo career, it also tells how he fought for the rights of African-American artists in a 1970’s music industry prejudiced against black performers.
The film was conceived, researched and directed by BAFTA award winner Olivia Lichtenstein, who recalls: “I grew up listening to soul music and I’d just started listening to Teddy again when I saw a documentary about Shep Gordon, the legendary artist manager who worked with everyone from Blondie to Alice Cooper – and Teddy. It included a little bit about him working with Teddy and it made me realise that I didn’t know what had happened to him. I had a really strong sense that I had to make a film to tell his story.”
Lichtenstein contacted Gordon, who joined the project as an executive producer, with BBC Films also becoming involved. The resulting 105 minute documentary includes magical and rarely seen original footage of Teddy’s performances, as well as intimate, candid interviews with co-performers, friends and family including Teddy’s ex-wife Karen and 100 year old mother Ida.
Adds Lichtenstein: “This is an extraordinary, human story that feels almost Shakespearian – it’s much more than just a music biopic, it’s an intimate portrait of both Teddy and of the extraordinary times in which he lived. We really get to know him because we hear from so many people who were close to him. It almost feels as if he comes back to life to let the world hear him sing again.”

 Brief Bio

Theodore DeReese ‘Teddy’ Pendergrass (1950–2010) was born and raised in Philadelphia. Rising to fame as the charismatic lead singer on many classic songs by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, he left the group over monetary and personality disputes in 1975, immediately launching a successful solo career with the label Philadelphia International that delivered five platinum selling albums in a row. However, his meteoric rise was suspended following a near-fatal car crash in March 1982 that left him paralysed from the chest down. Making an emotional return to the stage at the historic Live Aid concert in Philadelphia in 1985, he maintained a successful solo career until announcing his retirement in 2006.
Pendergrass died from respiratory failure in January 2010 at the age of 59.

BBC IPlayer - Jazzology with Soweto Kinch - Video Documentary

Another interesting music documentary video shows up on BBC IPlayer
Jazzology with Soweto Kinch
Saxophonist Soweto Kinch takes a personal journey into jazz through New Orleans, New York and London, where he meets and plays with fellow musicians.
Available for 4 weeks, BBC blurb and IPlayer Video link follows below
In New Orleans, New York and London, saxophonist Soweto Kinch meets and plays with fellow musicians and discovers a music that's political, spiritual and rooted in African American history.
Soweto argues that jazz is too often seen as a sterile museum piece, whereas in reality it's a powerful, political music which can only be understood through the history of racism and inequality from which it emerged.
In New Orleans he finds an older music rooted in the history of slavery. He meets saxophonist Donald Harrison Jr, who keeps alive the tradition of the Mardi Gras Indians, and joins Donald and his group the Congo Square Nation, who perform music influenced by African drumming and rhythms. Soweto meets musician and writer Nicholas Payton and trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard. Both talk about how jazz emerged from the struggle of African Americans to form a new language in a country where racism and segregation gave them few outlets for self-expression. Jazz is rooted in the blues and throughout its history has straddled the secular and the spiritual. Soweto plays along with pianist Marcus Roberts, and meets singer Carmen Lundy.
Soweto then visits New York, which by the 1930s was firmly established as the centre of the jazz world. In Harlem, Soweto find traces of the city's jazz history but also discovers New York's contemporary scene. He meets singer and bassist Esperanza Spalding and saxophonist Donny McCaslin, who featured on David Bowie's album Blackstar. Michael Mwenso blends jazz, soul and swing and Soweto joins him for a live session.
In London Soweto meets Courtney Pine, who was part of a movement of black British jazz musicians in the 1980s who revived the art form and inspired successive generations. Lastly, Soweto meets the latest wave of British jazz musicians including Shabaka Hutchings from Sons of Kemet, Cassie Kinoshi of Nerija and Giacomo Smith of Kansas Smitty's House Band. All are rooted in jazz traditions but also draw upon contemporary influences such as grime and dubstep.
Saxophonist Soweto Kinch takes a personal journey into jazz through New Orleans, New York and London, where he meets and plays with fellow musicians.

The Edwards Generation - New 45 & Lp - Cordial Recording

News from Cordial Recordings all about 2 previously unreleased tracks now out on a new 45  release along with a follow-on lp release for next year

The Edwards Generation were the San Francisco based family group that released a number of singles and an album during the 1970s. Their releases are highly revered of globally by soul and funk connoisseurs. Cordial Recordings are proud to partner them with their return to vinyl with the uptempo funked groover of ‘I Like Your Style’ on one side and the Motownesque ‘The Love I Found In You’ on the flip, which features the highly respected Chuck Edwards on lead vocals.

A) I Like Your Style

B) The Love I Found In You

The Edwards Generation are a family group that were led by the seasoned recording artist Chuck Edwards and his wife Irene. Chuck was a singer, guitarist and songwriter whose first single was released in 1956 on Duke Records and he went on to release further singles on labels such as Roulette, Alanna, Punch, Rene and Kapp. Chuck and Irene had five children together: Ron, Charlene, Jeff, Myron and Les. These children went on to learn various musical instruments before eventually supporting their parents in the sixties at various local gigs to their then home base of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They became known as The Edwards Generation and released their debut single in 1972 on New York label Ghetto Records with ‘Someone Like You’ and ‘School Is in.’

Shortly afterwards Chuck and Irene decided to take the family on a holiday to the west coast where they eventually relocated to and made San Francisco their family home. When landing in Los Angeles they approached and recorded a session for Barry White. These recordings have unfortunately never seen the light of day yet and are presumed lost in the vaults of the White estate. The family shortly afterwards set up a label called Tight Records where they self-distributed an album and three singles. These have all become collectors’ items in recent years. ‘The Street Thang’ album was released in 1976 and is credited to The Edwards Generation featuring Chuck Edwards. The three singles on Tight are ‘I Need You Only’ / ‘Keep Cool Brother,’ ‘Starlite Starbrite’ / ‘That’s How Much I Love Her’ and ‘I Want You Girl.’ These were all released between 76 and 77.

When the singles dried up the Edwards Generation did not stop recording and have

The family have continued playing in various guises and with much critical acclaim, unfortunately Chuck is no longer with us and passed away in 2001. A partnership between the family and Cordial Recordings will see a number of these songs released for the first time. The first single is ‘I Like Your Style’ and ‘The Love I Found In You,’ which is the only song that features Chuck on vocals. An album entitled ‘Dynasty’ which features some of these songs will be released on vinyl and CD in 2019. We interviewed Irene Edwins recently and she gave us the history of the Edwards Generation. Irene is still performing and you can hear her new single ‘Mr Wonderful’ via youtube

Irene Edwins interview

Where are you from originally Irene?
We call it “Little” Washington, Pennsylvania. About 20 miles from Pittsburgh.

Was that where you met Chuck?
Yes, we met there in 1951.

Were you both performers at that time?
Chuck was performing a lot because he had the best band, as they said, in Pa. at that time.

What was his band called?
Just Chuck Edwards…. The Chuck Edwards Band

When did you first start working together as performers?
It was off and on at that time. I started having children so I couldn’t go out all the time. I felt it was my duty to stay home and take care of my children so that’s what I did. Sometimes he’d be playing 6 nights a week, and I couldn’t go with him all the time. So I stayed home to take care of my children to give them the right direction. I was there with them all the time.
During those years was Chuck just performing in Pa or did he go outside of the state?
He mainly performed in Pa but he also travelled to Ohio, Massachusetts; he also went to Canada. Chuck went to a lot of places.

Did he support any of the big name acts?
He played with the Sonny Thompson Band, Charles Brown, Bo Diddley and quite a few others.

When was your first child born?
My first child was born in 1952, but I lost that child
Sorry
I only have five children now, but we still consider him a part of the family

Did you consciously help your children to start playing musical instruments?
We didn’t help them in that way. They heard their dad playing all the time. They picked up everything on their own. We didn’t have to push them to play this, or play that. They all played what they wanted to play. My oldest son wanted to play trombone at first. He wasn’t doing what he should’ve been doing, which is practicing, so his dad told him, “You’re not even playing the trombone, so you might as well get rid of it.” He wanted then to play the piano and that’s what he started playing. Everything that the kids started playing they picked up on their own, because that’s what they wanted to do since they were five or six years old.. Les wanted to start playing the drums.. He had been playing on everything in the house and hitting my kitchen pans so hard that I told him that “when he got older he had to buy me a whole new kitchen set”.. He made himself a little drum set and started playing that.. So his dad got him a set of drums.. He was hitting them so hard that Chuck said, “Rene we’ve got to get him another drum set because he’s tearing this one up”. My other sons started picking instruments up and I said to Chuck that “these children are playing!” He said ” I’ve got to sit them down and get them together.” They even went out one time to a little club called Half Brown. They took all their instruments with them to play… They came running back “mom they liked us, they want us to come back. They gave us money, they paid us.” They were happy. They’ve been playing music since they were very young. That’s why they’re so professional. They played with their dad and they learned a lot. They are just exceptional. They’re great musicians. They’ve been playing now for over 50 years…

When did you decide to relocate to the west coast?
We left Pa for California in ’72. We weren’t planning on staying but we got here and we liked it so much that we decided that we weren’t going back to Canonsburg, Pa, which is also the home of Perry Como. We took a family vacation and we never went back because we loved the city, we loved the state, we loved the weather and the beaches. That’s what we did.
I’m reading between the lines but your sons would be in their teenage years when you moved to SF. Is that right?
Yes, that is right. All of them except for Ron finished their schooling in the Bay Area. They performed the whole time.

When you moved to SF was the band getting paid to perform?
Oh yes. They wouldn’t play any place without getting paid because they always had crowds. My four sons played together and they had a wonderful band. As soon as they started playing the audience would be on the floor. They had sell-out crowds. As soon as their fans knew where they were playing they were there. Besides being known as The Edwards Generation, they had several name changes. Once as Genius, another time as One Guyy, and more recently as Movin’. They were the best band here in San Francisco and the crowds followed them everywhere.

Where did the name The Edwards Generation come from?
That came from Chuck CP

Was Chuck an Edwards or Edwins ?
He was an Edwins, but he thought that Edwards would sound more professional..

When you moved to SF the first studio that the group visited was Barry White’s? Did you go to the studio with them?
I did. I was with them. That was in Los Angeles. It was good meeting Barry White; he was a great big huge man. He was amazing.

The first releases that The Edwards Generation released, were they self-financed? Was Ghetto Records a family label ?
The very first family record that was released was through Ghetto Records, which was based in New York City and financed through its owner/president George Febo.. The song was called “Someone Like You”. Everything after that venture was financed through our own labels. One, which was Rene Record was named after me. There was also Punch Records and Tight Records.

In the 70’s in San Francisco which groups did The Edwards Generation support?
There were quite a few name acts. They played with The Intruders, also War, did a show with Tower of Power, opened for ConFunkShun to name a few. They even performed with Taj Mahal at the world renowned Glide Memorial Church in San Francisco with the Reverend Cecil Williams.

The Edwards Generation never really split up because the members have continued recording separately. Was Chuck doing his own thing too after “Street Thang”?
He was doing his own thing. The boys were wanting to do their own thing too. They were growing up and you can’t stop that. They were performing a lot. They went on tour oversees to Japan and Europe.

Did you continue performing too?
I still perform at times. I’m working on a CD now with my son Myron. I’m hoping to get that out soon.

I’m sorry about asking but when did Chuck pass away?
It was in 2001

For me it’s very important that the first single released is the one song that we have that features Chuck on lead vocals, hopefully that will help with his legacy.
Yes it will because Chuck was well known back in the Pittsburgh area. He played a lot of places there. He played a lot of places in Cleveland, Ohio. Chuck played a lot of places. Then the children came up and they started doing their thing. Each one of them plays what they want to play. They do a great job of it. They can switch around on all the instruments. They can each sing too…

What surprised me about the thirteen songs that we’ve signed is that they’re all really good songs! Your children are obviously very talented indeed who should have deserved a bit more recognition for their musicianship and the ability to write good catchy songs.
They’re great musicians and beautiful writers. They’ve got a lot of material. Once the album is released other people will get to hear the music too. They’re great performers too. Les is great on drums; Myron is great on the bass. They all know how to perform. All of them ! Jeff has a CD out and he’s coming to London.

Soul 4 Real 7" The Masqueraders (60s unreleased tracks feat Bobby Womack)

Here it is the fifth release 7” from Soul 4 Real Records, more previously unreleased sides from THE MASQUERADERS. Originally recorded in American Sound Studio and produced by Tommy Cogbill, featuring Bobby Womack on guitar. Limited Edition of 500 copies.
PRE ORDER NOW FOR 10th DECEMBER 2018
LISTEN HERE:

THE MASQUERADERS - PROPHET OF LOVE / YOU´RE THE ONE (SOUL 4 REAL 05)
It’s somewhere between late ’67 and early ’68 and The Masqueraders are in American Sound Studio in Uptown, Memphis. On the agenda for today’s session are some self-composed songs; a mix of pleading, deep and electrifying, up-tempo soul songs including “I Don’t Want Nobody To Lead Me On”, “Let’s Face Facts”, “Do You Love Me Baby” and “Sweet Lovin’ Woman”. They have two other songs for the session: “Prophet Of Love” and “You’re The One”.
Chips Moman and Tommy Cogbill are taking care of business on production while Bobby Womack is up front with his guitar, working with the studio band “The Memphis Boys”. It’s a busy time and output has been prolific; in just one week, 25% of Billboard’s Top 100 have come from the studio. Time is precious, choices will be made and sadly some cuts from the session may not make it to vinyl release…not just yet.
Time is a healer, and here, rescued from a dusty and forgotten tape box, are the lost tracks; two of the coolest, sweetest cuts with the tightest group harmonies gliding over those Memphis mid-tempo rhythms.
(Cliff Steele)
Presented in a beautiful picture cover laminated 7" designed by Jordi Duró. Liner notes by Cliff Steele

Philadelphia music label proprietor Frank Lipsius has been waiting decades for a high-profile, musically focused picture like Green Book to dig out some of the lost relics buried in the vaults of his family biz, Jamie Record Co.
We’re talking two-minute-and-twenty second wonders, like the soul-rocking “Letter from My Baby” (Timmy Shaw) and big-beat jam “What’cha Gonna Do” (by Bill Massey with Lea Lendon and the Rite Timers). Songs you’ve likely never heard but might think you had if you could flash back to the hits that labels were chasing in 1962, the year in which the “reluctant buddy” film is set.

The article then does go on to expand how nowadays film-related companies are using setups such as Jamie/Guyden for sourcing soundtrack tracks rather than paying high 'licencing' fees, think 'The Temptones' rather than using a 'Hall and Oates' hit
...has also worked Jamie songs into USA’s Mr. Robot (Honey and the Bees’ “These Old Memories”) and the ABC show Speechless -- using “Ain’t Got the Love (of One Girl on My Mind),” written by Barbara Mason and performed by the Ambassadors....
The full article is quite informative on this aspect and worth a walk over , it also reveals the labels most lucrative commercial placement track!

BBC IPlayer - Reggae Fever: David Rodigan

Enjoyed this BBC 4 documentary the other day....
Reggae Fever: David Rodigan

David Rodigan's unlikely career as a reggae broadcaster and DJ has developed in parallel with the evolution of Jamaican music in the UK. His passion and his profession have given him a privileged, insiders' view of the UK's love affair with Jamaican music that began in the 1950s. His constant championing of it has afforded him national treasure status with generations of British Jamaicans and all lovers of reggae music.
This is a film about the career of David Rodigan but it's also a window through which to see a wider human story about social change in the UK: a story of immigration and integration, and music's role within it.
The beginning of his career conjures up a forgotten era when reggae was reviled by liberal, hippyish music fans because of its association with skinheads. At one point, his fellow students agreed to share a house with him only if Rodigan agreed not to play reggae. Instead, he would haunt London's specialist record shops and sneak out to Jamaican clubs alone.
His break first came on BBC Radio London, where his knowledge and infectious enthusiasm won him the gig. Since that first break, he's had shows on Capital, Kiss and now BBC Radio 1Xtra and BBC Radio 2. In the 80s, his radio show became such a Sunday lunchtime fixture in London's West Indian households that it was colloquially known as 'rice 'n' peas'. Bob Marley personally chose Rodigan's show to play out the world exclusive of Could You Be Loved.
As well as being a DJ, Rodigan also began to 'soundclash' on a global stage. This musical competition where crew members from opposing sound systems pit their skills against each other involves the playing of records in turn, with the crowd ultimately deciding who has 'killed' the other crew, by playing the better chosen track. But standard versions of tracks don't cut it in a clash, where the true currency is 'dubplates' - versions of tracks recut, often by the original artist, with lyrics changed to praise the playing crew or diss the opposing one.
In Jamaica, after he began clashing live on national radio with DJ Barry G, he became so famous that his name was even adopted by a Kingston gangster. He began competing on the World Soundclash stage alongside the likes of Jamaica's Stone Love and Japan's Mighty Crown as the soundclash became a global phenomenon. David is probably the only person ever to have been awarded an MBE and the title of World Clash Champion.
In recent years, Rodigan's live DJ appearances have started attracting a far younger audience. It can be seen as a reflection of the way different forms of music from the different cultures that have arrived in Britain over the last 70 years have integrated, taken root and spawned new scenes, attitudes and tastes.
As well as appearing at student unions across the country and continuing to clash by himself, he's also now a part of clash crew Rebel Sound, first assembled for Red Bull Culture Clash in 2014. In this environment, David found himself amidst a melting pot of beats, loops and popping, infectious bass-driven riddims - playing to the kids who are discovering him and therefore reggae music through other artists.
Now in his 40th professional year, David is quite rightly celebrating, his passion for the music he loves burning as brightly as ever. This film is a testament to this most unlikely of reggae aficionados - a celebration of a man whose story is strangely intertwined with not only the evolution of music in this country but also the evolution of the culture.

As said found it most enjoyable
anyone out there remembers Rodigans Rockers his regular BFBS show that run for 25 years!

The topside is a unique, midtempo, crossover Soul gem from Tony Borders, long revered by collectors of Northern, Crossover and Southern Soul alike!
“Promise To Myself” is a side which has received huge appreciation for many years, at the most discerning soul music venues, worldwide. Book: Long Slow Train: The Soul Music of Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings

Long Slow Train: The Soul Music of Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings -  Donald Brackett  - Backbeat Books

Just published (8 Nov 2018 UK) by Backbeat Books (an imprint of Halle and Leonard Books)  this 272-page book by Candian author Donald Brackett (Back to Black: Amy Winehouse's Only Masterpiece) is billed as offering...
'a heartfelt appreciation for a bighearted star who beat the odds and did it all her way.'
Extract
“The heart of youth is reached through the senses, the senses of age are reached through the heart” – Nicholas-Edme Retif
“Too short, too fat, too black and too old . . . ” perennial refrain from record producers responding to Sharon Jones in the early days of her music career.
Following their traditional performance pattern, when The Dap-Kings started a concert by playing a few instrumentals to get the crowd warmed up to a fever pitch and ready for their main attraction, they would introduce her by having the bass player boom out: “Ladies and gentlemen, 110 pounds of soul excitement, Miss Sharon Jones!” She was all of that and more, with not an ounce of falsehood in her.
Blurb
A lively and engaging chronicle of the triumphant rise of Sharon Jones one of the most authentic purveyors of American soul music since James Brown Long Slow Train: The Soul Music of Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings traces her roots from gospel to soul to funk and beyond. After many years of struggling on the periphery of the music industry and being told by label executives and producers that she was too short, too old, too fat, and too black to make it as a headlining performer, Jones was finally discovered in 1996 by the Brooklyn-based revivalist label Daptone Records . The rest is herstory . As the dynamic frontline singer for the stellar soul band the Dap-Kings, Jones's career ascended rapidly, establishing both the band and the label with a cult-like following for her special brand of gospel funk. From 2002 until 2016, when Jones succumbed to pancreatic cancer, she and her band toured globally and released a flock of singles and eight full-length albums. (During that time, they were also tapped by Amy Winehouse's producer, Mark Ronson, to be the studio outfit for their Grammy Award-winning album, Back to Black .) In 2015, Jones was profiled in the popular documentary Miss Sharon Jones!, directed by Barbara Kopple, as the unstoppable soul queen continued to deliver explosive live concert performances even while undergoing medical treatment. This book offers a heartfelt appreciation for a bighearted star who beat the odds and did it all her way.

Release Notes

Versions of two dozen of the finest compositions from one of Muscle Shoals’ most admired singer/songwriter/musicians of the 60s and 70s.
Atlantic Records’ Jerry Wexler said he was going to be “the next big thing” more than 40 years ago. Sadly, life dealt Eddie Hinton several poor hands in his 51 years on Earth, from a minor early 70s drugs bust that led to a premature departure from his home in Muscle Shoals to the release of a fantastic debut album in 1977 that got buried when his record label went bankrupt weeks afterwards, to a fatal heart attack in the 90s, just when he was finally beginning to achieve a long-deserved level of international recognition. No wonder he once wrote and recorded a song called ‘Hard Luck Guy’. If anyone ever earned such a soubriquet, it was Eddie Hinton....

Book: Soul R&B Funk Photographs 1972-1982 - Bruce W Talamon

Bruce W. Talamon - Soul. R&B. Funk. Photographs 1972-1982  - Taschen.
If soul music related photos are your thing then this recently published book (with almost 300 photos from 1972-1982) may just be worth a look over.
Details of this book recently published by Taschen follow...
Company Blurb
“For ten glorious years, I had the best seat in the house.” – Bruce W. Talamon
Talamon saw it all during the golden age of soul, R&B, and funk. Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, this young African American photographer from Los Angeles found himself backstage with an all-access pass to the heart of the music scene. He caught his first big break landing a position as a staff photographer at SOUL Newspaper in LA in the early 1970s, just as soul, R&B, and funk were becoming part of the mainstream. He captured the rehearsals and sound checks, recording sessions and costume fittings, the quiet reflective moments and life on the road, and, of course, the wild photo shoots and memorable performances. These photographs define an era famed for its glamour, fabulous fashions, and utter devotion to the groove.
Including close to 300 photographs from 1972 to 1982, the extensive Talamon archives are presented in full detail for the first time. Whether you’re a diehard soul fan or a thrilled newcomer to the aesthetic magic of the 1970s, the collection exudes the infectious spirit of an exuberant age. Featuring icons such as Earth, Wind & Fire; Marvin Gaye; Diana Ross; Parliament-Funkadelic; Al Green; Gil Scott-Heron; James Brown; Barry White; Rick James; Aretha Franklin; the Jackson Five; Donna Summer; and Chaka Khan and many others; there are also several stops at the legendary Soul Train studios. Talamon documented a visual period in black music that lasted way past the midnight hour and will never come again.
This release is an affordable, compact version of our Art Edition, limited to 500 copies and featuring a portfolio of four prints signed by Bruce W. Talamon.

New Century Soul Club 15th Anniversary

December 6th, 2003, the start of a journey for Marcelle and Chris Waterman.  This was the date for the very first New Century Soul Club all-nighter.  The Club’s name being taken from the venue, New Century House which was part of the CIS building on Corporation Street in Manchester.

DJs on the first night included Mark Bicknell who was a club resident, Carl Willingham, Steve Thomas, Kev Murphy, Dave Evison, Brian Rae, Karl Rhodes, Gary Cope, Paul Kidd and Kiddo from Telford.
Fast forward to November 24th2018 and the club will be celebrating 15 glorious years. 15 years in which the club has moved home several times. Venues such as Wulfrun Hall in Wolverhampton, Queens Hall in Burslam, Air & Melodies in Birmingham, The Rocket & VSMC (Marble Arch) in London, Steam in Crewe, Maxims in Wigan, The Stables near Wolverhampton, Radcliffe Civic before finding a new home at Bury Town.

The club has over the years featured the very best Djs in as many as three rooms.  The main Room featuring the best in quality oldies and current spins. A second room used to showcase an alternative to the main room with many Djs featuring lesser known and underplayed records.   A Modern Soul room has also featured over the years at various times, promoted by the likes of Neil Rushton and Baz Maledy.  Many Djs have over the years had their big break at New Century, given a larger stage than any soul night could give them with many going on to become household Djs.
There have been many memorable nights at New Century none more so when Chris and Marcelle have showcased some of the artists we revere.  The Flirtations, Melvin Davis, Ronnie Walker, Nolan Porter, Yvonne Vernee, Bunny Sigler, The Four Perfections, Fabulous Peps & Willie Walker have graced the stage at New Century.

Today, Chris is still very much part of the fabric although he has taken a bit of a back seat leaving the promotion to his better half Marcelle with Andy Dyson helping out with the DJs.

An Elizabethan Room resident line up of Andy Dyson, Sarah Jane, Calvin Lee Hughes, Matt Sneath, Colin James and Dick Krop offer the perfect blend of age and experience with youth and enthusiasm giving dancers and chin strokers alike the very best in todays Northern and Rare Soul, classics to lesser known and in some cases unknown soul music, all the Djs given carte blanch to play whatever they like. To help celebrate the Club’s 15thAnniversary they will be joined on the night by Dave Stabler, Ian James and Daz Dakin to give us 9 hours of quality music.
Tucked away in the Kenwood Suite, hosted by Simon Ingham, resident Djs Bob Hinsley, Robbo, Mick Howard & Len Dopson will be giving dancers and collectors a chance to hear something different.  All Djs relish the chance to play something you don’t always get the chance to play at mainstream venues or the main rooms.  For the Anniversary “Shifty” will be making a rare appearance behind the decks since his retirement as one of the country’s top Djs.  I myself (Chalky) will also be making a return visit to the Kenwood Suite since I took a step back from Djing and other involvement with promoting a few years ago.
The balcony which overlooks the main room supports a very busy record bar with top dealers in attendance.
We have all the ingredients for another memorable night and we hope you can come along and help Marcelle and Chris celebrate 15 great years on the 24thNovember.
The venue is Bury Town Hall, Knowsley Street, Bury, BL9 0SW.  Door tax is £12 and the night will rum from 9pm until 6am the following morning.

Smoke - Give Me Your Heart - Cannonball Records

It is over three years since Alberto Zanini’s Cannonball Records burst on to the scene with the fantastic Big Lee Dowell and “What I Done Wrong”.  Cannonball themselves have come a long way since then too, the in-house musicians who with the use of original studio equipment give us a real authentic sound.  The label has aspiring musicians and singers to promote  contemporaryaspiring musicians and to give them a home and platform to get their material to a wider audience.

However back to where it started for the latest Cannonball release.  The Steals Brothers, Marvin and Melvin, well known amongst Soul music aficionados for their work under both  their own names and under the pseudonym of Mystic & Lyric with groups such as Magic Night (If You And I Had Never Met),  The Four Perfections (I’m Not Strong Enough), Ecstasy Passion & Pain, The Trammps, the monster smash Could It Be I’m Falling In Love for the Spinners and many many more.

For this release we go back over 30 years to a demo by William “Smoke” Howard to a set of lyrics to a song called “Give Me Your Heart”.  Smoke, a native of Bristol…Tennessee, not Somerset, and now residing in Philadelphia.  Whilst still in College Smoke formed “The Fabulous Nu-Tones” but it was after College that his career began to take off.  He led and managed several bands including “Black Smoke”. He then went on to become the lead singer of the Ebonys in the mid 90s and a tenure that lasts right through to today.
Back to the release, a tale of a guy finding love, but that love is not reciprocated, she only telling him that she likes him a lot.  He then goes on to tell how he feels when she is around and wanting to spend the rest of his life with her and then asking her to give him her heart, he wants to take the chance and wants her to do the same.  Great lyrics from the Steals brothers and carried superbly by Smoke give us this infectious uplifting dancer.
The music was put together and arranged by the Cannonball band, or as Alberto calls them the labels very own Countryside Strings Ensemble who stole precious time from this year’s harvest.  We did reap a great recording from an extremely talented bunch of musicians who brought the lyrics of the Steals Brothers and the vocals of Smoke to life, so much so you would think it was all recorded at the same time some 30 odd years ago and not recently at the studios of Cannonball.
The record has all the ingredients to go where Big Lee went and give the scene another dance floor winner.  Don’t sleep on this, get your order in now via the Cannonball website, it is sure to sell all the 300 copies pretty quick and go on to be not just a dance floor winner but a collector’s piece as well.

Ace Records - The November 2018 Line Up

November is almost here and so a timely announcement from Ace Records...

New releases from Ace records for the month of 2018

Bob Stanley & Pete Wiggs Present State Of The Union - The American Dream in Crisis 1967-73
Pop
Various Artists (Saint Etienne)
CD £11.50
By 1968, it seemed the whole of America – not just its youth – felt something was going badly wrong; with Vietnam, assassinations, race riots, and ever-climbing divorce rates, the American way of life was under scrutiny from all sides. These songs display a vulnerability that the Greatest Generation (Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Dean Martin) and the pre-Beatles generation (Dion, Bobby Darin, the Beach Boys, the 4 Seasons) had never experienced before. It’s the sound of a country trying to work its way out of a crisis.
