Negative Media Articles

Reports of yet more negative comments on the Northern scene in a mainstream-ish magazine.

Fair enough you may think, but trouble is they are all written by so called northern fans, the rocket lot. in their attempts to promote their own event, they seem fit to do it by slagging down other events, djs, soul fans, styles of soul.
Be laughable if it wasnt so offensive.

Jazz Fm - Quality Special

1 hour and 3/4 of pure quality with a special featuring Ronnie McNeir whos currently in the UK as part of the Four Tops tour. Well enjoyable
Phil Sacks (spelling?)was other guest with a look at the club scene prior to the days of wigan and mecca. Which was well interesting as steered away from usual cliched info.
Next weeks guest being bit of a London connection so watch out for Nick Brown from Scenesville. Check it out, know lot of people up here enjoyed these old shoes crew when guested recently, so check this one out for another taste of the Real London Northern scene.

Saturday Morning Cartoons

Runcorn Pavilions - Runcorn Pavilion was on last nite, with Ginger being the main guest.
First visit there, and a impressive venue. Billed and run as an across the board nite, and with a policy of totally leaving it up to the DJ to decide what to play, did bit of an early spot there which as always enjoyed.

Missed one of the residents Cog as he was stuck in traffic down south, Bernie OBrien the other resident dished out some quality all era soul, including that Lamont Dozier unreleased track which seems flavour of the month.

Had to miss Gingers spot as had to get back to Llandudno soul nite in a rush before it shut to pick up equipment. So its up to you out there to fill us in.Hit that Submit news!

Going by what I saw, recommend it, smart venue and a well smart venue policy to me, hats off to Steve F and Bernie for this forward policy.

Now hitting a regular run, next one on in a months time on the 19th of April

Llandudno soul nite reports say fairly busy, guests included Steve Thomas from Holyhead who due to job change should be guesting at venues a lot more, next one on 19 April, guest tbc

Still Buzzing - Well theres still a bit of a buzz about the last weeks weekender at Prestatyn, everyone have spoke to gives it a big "yeah nice one". And know many have already booked for next year.

Londons Niter - That time of month again, 100 Club on tonite with guest Guy H and the regular crew promising rare soul as it should be.

Europe - Two big events in Munich and Milan tonite, top local djs and a few Brits on the loose guesting- Jo Wallace, David Flynn and Alvin Smethurst

7 Days - Next week sees Niter in Dublin with a fair sized North Wales mob making the trip. One of the Londons big 3 rare soul events is on as well and sounds like theres going to be a fair few north-westers going down that M6 along with guest dj Dave Holt to CSCs top rated Dome soul nite. Caledonia Glasgow, Birchfield Park, Brighton dayer and Viaduct also on that weekend

Jazz Fm - Ginger Top form

Jazz FM - Caught a bit of this on road, guest was new Northern folk hero Ginger with as always a most entertaining guest appearance.Recounting details of his recent trip to Sweden (sounds like a well thriving scene there) and delivering some of his latest top sounds, such as Dance With You - Jimmy Andrews- cover up it was most enjoyable both rare soul and laugh wise. Good to hear that many of Sweden Soul fans were familar with his current plays and cover ups through downloading off the internet. Have his last show on Jazz Fm up in soul sounds, the radio section, so possibly site may have had a part, which makes it all seem worthwhile if so.
Best laugh was some sort of chart, "Better use your head", " Baby Hit and Run", "You hit me where it hurts" where some of the sounds featured.
As said what managed to catch was most enjoyable, great stuff. Note .The weekly "how many times Prestwich is mentioned " pool has to be postponed, as only caught about 20 mins of show, and though running count was 2 all prizes will roll over to next weeks pool )
Had to laugh as the "Hi Im so excited " adverts were back on, and after the last lot which featured a lot of "phantom" guest djs, seems they are playing it safe and gone back to the original ones.

TWISTED WHEEL

Dear All, Hi from Tel-Aviv Israel. Am considering starting a nite club based on the structure of the old Twisted Wheel that I used to go to in the 60s. Need pics and descriptions -- anyone have descriptions. Kind of remember - many times that I went were in a "all-nighter blur" as those of who went were probably in the same state!!.

Any help appreciated. Thanks and keep up the good work.

soul in the city...5-3-02

The "Soul in the City" crew moved to a new venue this week, after having a few problems with the old one, but this looks like being our long term home The new venue is a large pub (The Old Blue Last) on the edge of the City in Great Eastern St. at the corner of Curtain Rd. with a fair size function room upstairs and with the beer prices at £2.40 a pint, we could not turn it down. With 5 DJs the nights sounds were right across the board. Classics to R&B Beat ballads, up tempo stompers to cross over, the night had something for everyone. Hit read more for more info and playlists By about 9.30pm there where about 35-40 people in, which for a Tuesday night, and all that goes on in London was not bad. There was a problem with the decks, due to a loose floor board, which caused the decks to jump when anybody danced or backdropped (you know who you are!) too close to the DJs, with a funny sight watching Paul asking people to move back from the decks, when anyone got too close. The Landlord Tommy, an old soul boy himself, having already moved the decks once at our instigation, promised this will be sorted for next month, Tuesday 2nd April. Although the bar shuts at 11pm, it was about 11.50 when the last record was played. All in all it was a good night to hear all the different types of Northern and have a dance and chat on a Tuesday night. Here are some of the records that were played (sorry Dave Greenhills sets are unavailable due to him being on holiday this week and unable to email them.)

Llandudno Connoisseurs Weekend - Quality all over the place

Llandudno Connoisseurs Weekend.

Well gotta say what a event that was! If your idea of heaven is listening to quality rare soul in a smart venue, with quality being the key word, no dance floor pressure dictating plays and a appreciative crowd well this was it.Heaven and a half 2 niters, and 2 dayers of it all with all the djs pulling out the stops, quality sound after quality sound, talking about pleasure overload.

Cant do event justice really in a few lines so bit more detailed one will be up later.

Just big thanks to promoters and djs for giving my ears what has to be the most concetrated amount of quality stuff in a long time . More detailed info in a while

Postcards From The Factory Issue #2 - February 2002

Postcards From The Factory Issue #2 - February 2002
How the kids from Compton were spotted hanging out in Detroit.
At the height of the Rare Groove scene, during the 1980s , this track by The Jackson Sisters grew to cult status and saw Polydor Records gain some heavy sales when they obliged the record collecting fraternity with a re-issue on their Urban Records imprint.
To receive more postcards from the factory email allan
The Soul Factory is a wholly owned subsidiary of Beat Street Records
However, the UK author of the definitive guide to The Whos Who Of Soul Music confused this bunch of teenage girls from Compton (California) with a crew from Detroit. Of course, when you believe in miracles, I guess anything is possible. Damn experts, don't believe a word they say! Such was the mega-stardom of The Jackson Five, the ultimate 1970s boy band, I can only imagine that the worlds youth clubs must have been the haunt of many an A&R executive. From that same teenage genre, came this slice of the action. Shrill, frenetic, and oh so groove worthy, this track came to personify the whole lifestyle and attitude of the Rare Groove movement. To really catch the Rare Groove fever, you had to be at the Hammersmith Record Fairs, held monthly, in West London during the mid 80s . The vibe within the main record hall was not unlike that of the Notting Hill carnival, where the many sound systems were vying for the attention of the ever discerning punter."Turn that racket down, I'm trying to ..."
This particular track was originally issued in the US on Prophesy Records, but was very quickly released in the UK by this subsidiary of CBS Records. Due to its eternal popularity, even the re-issues fetch a good few pounds or so, but as rarities go, I'd be very surprised to see other copies like this UK Demo knocking around today.

Brooklands, Barnsley 2002

Well what an opening night!
A huge thank you to everybody that turned out on Saturday night to the new Brooklands event. Over 300 people were in attendance, travelling from as far a field as Scotland down to Leicestershire. The music supplied by the 3 DJs on the night; Gary, Terry Finn and the excellent Snowy was greatly enjoyed by all - in fact we had to carry on till 2:30 as they wouldnt go home!
Once again big thanks to everyone that attended and also all that helped to promote the event in whatever shape that took. Much appreciated.
Next event is March 9th, a bit close we know but then it settles into a steady monthly groove.
DJs will be Derek Pearson, Snowy and Ginger Taylor.
Tickets are available now at £4:00 and the special room/b&b/ticket deal is on again ,but make sure you book early... where have I heard that before.

A quick word passed on from Luton where the Talk Of The South held a soul nite at the rugby club featuring Andy Rix and David Flynn as the main guests. (Did I need to say that?)

Definitely sounds like it was the down south northern place to be that nite.

SWEDEN SOUL WEEKENDER Friday 10 May 2002

SWEDEN SOUL UNITY II

In March last year 70 of us took a step into for what was, for most - the unknown. A mini cruise to Sweden, the highlight of which was an alnighter with the Swedish Soul fans. Everyone had the time of their lives, including the Swedes and as a result they christened their Alnighter SOUL UNITY. Im pleased to tell you they want to repeat the experience.

Getting a cheap fare from DFDS has been very difficult this year and we had almost given up, but even though its late - here are the details:-

Sailing from Newcastle-upon-Tyne with DFDS on Friday 10/5/2002 at 3pm. Arriving in Gothenburg Saturday at 5pm .

There are plenty facilities on board the cruiser, a restaurant, a cabaret, a cocktail/piano bar, a casino, a cinema, a disco, a Swedish sauna and a swimming pool.

Hit Read More (look up) for more Details, FAQs, Prices, Top Tips, Timings, Dates, etc etc for what sounds like a top weekend, and going by reports from last one seems like one not to miss...
Last year we half took over the ships disco. The only reason we didnt take over totally was that half the party where in the cabaret and having far too much fun to join the rest of us in the disco. There is no blame there, Im just pointing out there is plenty to choose from.

There is Duty Free available both outward and back. The drinks on the ship are more expensive this year, You could bring your own but be careful no one sees you in the clubs or bar.

In Sweden drinks are cheaper than on the ship and with the good exchange rate are not much more expensive then here, they are going to search bags for drink on entry to the alnighter. After the nighter we will have to find our own way back to the ship by taxi unless you want to take the last coach around 12am. Everyone must be back at the ship for 10am Sunday and we arrive back in Newcastle at 10am on Monday.

UK DJs taking part havent been decided yet but they will be a fine pick.

The deal is £90 per person, that includes 3 breakfasts and 3 nights bed, also transfers from boat to city though for convenience we will probably arrange our own coach. The free breakfasts are eat as much as you want Smorgasbord (big buffet), the food is superb.

Im sorry its a bit more expensive this year but its DFDS not us, probably because its later in the year and you get an extra two breakfasts.

To book phone DFDS on 08705 333222 and quote V6679S. Alternatively speak to Lizz for guidance. The offer is open until April but that isnt guaranteed, so book as soon as possible. I.E. this is direct with DFDS and the offer is open to other people as well as us. After you book phone so we know how many are coming, also any questions phone Lizz 07879 441 214.

Frequently asked Questions

04/02/2002
Q - Do I get a cabin?
A - yes with on suite shower and toilet, they are small with bunk beds, but clean.
Q - Can I return to the ship at any time in the night?
A - yes but the terminal will seem closed; start up the covered gang way and you will find a security guard (maybe asleep), he will speak English as most do. He will check your documents then allow you to pass.
Q - How many are coming?
A - Dont know yet, weve phoned a few and everyone we spoke to are coming
Q - Will the sea be rough?
A - Probably but not always.
Q - What if I am Sea Sick?
A - "I am" - I found that if I had something to eat, didnt look outside and rested on my bunk through the initial bout of sickness (couple of hours) - I got over it. However you can get Tablets from the information desk if you want them. Last year the sea was fine and no-one was ill.. NB. I went this February and the Sea was terrible but I took my own advice and I was ok, in May we stand a better chance of calm Seas

Last year the Swedes were fantastic hosts and I can promise you a unique experience among some of the friendliest people in the world.

We may well be going for a meal before the event but it isnt organised yet, we will let you know if you give you phone number to Lizz

The Venue will be open from 8pm until 6am and the bar will be open until about 3am.

There is fire regulation in the venue, Smoking is only allowed in the bar area. The bar is quite large so it doesnt cause any real inconvenience - it simply gives you chance to chat with the Swedes .
Please dont contact me. I am not the organiser. But I went last year and had a great time. Will be there again this year too.

For details, please contact my bezzie mate Lizz.

You can email: fizzy_121@yahoo.co.uk or goodie_new_shoes@hotmail.com

or telephone Lizz Foster on 07879 441 214(who many of you will know from nighters and soul nites both within the UK and overseas).

Best wishes

Dione

Gt Moor Con Club Stockport Fri 22 Feb Review

Thanks to Steve Foran, as have for you his view on last Fridays nite at Great Moor Club in Stockport.
Orignally posted on Soul-Talk email list
Just thought I would post a listing of our soul night last night. Fri 22 Feb.
The evening was not like our usual nights. In Stockport we have lost two soulies recently. Firstly Nick Stamp died tragically on Christmas Day. Nick was a really nice lad, 38 with a family. Married into an extended soul family and a keen scooter fan. It was the first time we had chance to remember Nick as our soul night is every other month. Our extended feelings go to Nicks family and all his friends. The second departee was only last week and the funeral was on the 22nd. A lot of the party called in to our night. Joe Burns was older than me , I think he was 48. Joe was one of the most colourful soul lads around Stockport and every one knew him. In many repects our night was their night. Our thoughts are with Joes family and friends.
Gt Moor Con Club started when Alan Pollard and myself Steve Foran managed to obtain the club function room for soul nights. The committee were not very happy at first due to the 70s perception of NS, kids and drugs and staying up all night etc etc.We are now nearly at our 2nd Annivesary and the bar takings are around £1700 per night. They want us to go weekly!!!!
We try to mix up the sounds and try to break newer tunes. Last night was a little different,
We split the night into 45mins, 30, 30, 45 mins. Hour long guest spot by Les Hare and the last hour was a deck each for Alan and myself.
The tunes from Alan and myself over the night, in no particular order...

Odds & Ends Happening

Dont forget if you have a soul related thing going and want to spread the word, on it feel free to post/submit/email details in and get it featured on this site. Idea of site is to provide a good resource for soul fans to find out what is going on, what has happenend, what is available. Like to think were getting there, picking up about six thousand plus visitors per month, so if got ought want passed on.......get on it now!

Few odd clips of news

Johnny Vaughan Northern Soul Patrol on TV - Lot of laughs with this and done in a good funny surreal sort of way, classy backing as well from Kent
records. Read that the guys are from Wokings scooter club "The Lost Souls". May be a bit late but catch it if you can.

Togetherness Weekenders - On Jazz Fm Richard Searling annouced that theres gonna be two Togetherness weekenders next year.

New Event- Again also on Jazz FM again word was that details of a Legendary Venue returning will be annouced in the next Togetherness mag.

Togetherness Mag - The next issue is out at the begining of next month, after some of the content in the last issue would like to think it can only get better.

Togetherness - Seems that Soul-Source no longer gets the togetherness press release emails, nice one! But no need to worry Kev we will still carry on reporting interesting stuff concerning them, it just wont be official!!

Radio - Kev Roberts has a new radio show on Solar Radio on Saturdays, can catch it either thru internet or even better thru Sky digital in UK, (can you get solar in europe??)
Details : "Starting Saturday 9 February at 10-00am GMT - we welcome Kev Roberts to Solar - and his "Hall of Fame" a new weekly programme featuring Northern Soul Anthems, Vintage all time soul greats, interviews and prize giveaways. "

Tyn Times - Informative Info and Link

Thanks to Irish Greg for passing on some well informative info. Has been in touch with one of the members of Tyn Tymes, whos version of Baby I Love you was a recent in-demander.
Seems the groups got back together and have a web page up at (link not working) which is worth a visit.
Also passed on the info below from group member Mike Keracher
Nice one!
Thanks so much for playing our one and only record. We were all in college when we recorded that cut at the great "Fame Studios" they are located in our home state of Alabama. We were not under contract or anything, we actually paid for the studio time and recorded both the A and B side in one day, I believe, because that was all we could afford. The Music Box was a record store in our home town and the owner paid for the making of the 1500 copies that we had made so we named the label "Music Box".
Our record did get a fair amount of play time in Alabama and some around the south. We sent copies to many stations. A great deal of people thought we were an all black band because of the way we sounded and the music we played. We always took that as a compliment! We may have sold about 1,000 or a little more back then.

Interesting Links - Dorothy Berry

Dorothy Berry
Interesting feature with info, photos, free download etc on Dorothy Berry known for her Soul Power, Driving Me Crazy, Dont give me love 45s etc from a Louie Louie angle
Preview Clip follows the article link is at the bottom
When author Richard Berry wrote the song, he combined romantic images of a distant love with a catchy Caribbean-inspired musical riff. At the time he wrote this song, he was involved in a romantic relationship with a beautiful girl from his old high school by the name of Dorothy Adams. As he wrote the lyrics "a fine little girl- she waits for me," it’s not unlikely that he was inspired by his teenage sweetheart. When they decided they would get married, Richard raised money for the wedding by selling one of his prize jewels. Richard sold the publishing rights to "Louie Louie" and other songs for $750, and unknowingly made rock and roll history. Who would have ever guessed this song would have taken on such a life of it’s own? Certainly not Richard or Dorothy?

Last Weekend

Bit late as been busy, but just a quick word on last weekend
Well got to say the 6th Annivesary at Lowton was a well enjoyable nite, great line up of DJs, two dropped out Tim Brown and Chris King. Think late additions were Ian Cuncliffe and also Steve Thomas (HHead) doing the last hour.
Packed, quality sounds, great atmosphere. Highlight of nite to me was Keith Moneys spot, ouch so good it hurt. Rest of line up did the business, and to me seems a lot fresher feel to the sounds being spun nowadays with a distinct lack of cheese.
Gotta say was a great nite
Tonys at Blackburn was on next day and reports have had was that it was also a good one. Seems last few weeks that nearly every venue report have had, says that all events has been well good, good crowds, good music. Quality Northern venues on a roll?

Change in Northern Web Ring

Just to let you know that after almost 3 years, have handed over the running of the Northern Web Ring to Bernie O Brien.
Set up to help soul fans find Northen sites easier and web site owners get exposure. Felt due to other going ons could not give it the time and effort it deserves. So have passed it on, and hopefully Bernie will take it onwards and upwards
Cheers and thanks to those who offered to help out.

Nordic Soul - Sales List

100+ Sales list from Christian Hermansson
Just hit read more to view
"NORDIC SOUL 45´s"
If you for some reason don´t want this list in the future (a few times a year at the most) send me a mail and tell me so and you will be deleted from my address book. If you do wish to receive a list in the future send me a blank mail saying"I want the list" and you will be added to future mail outs (this does not apply if you get it by mail obviously). I try to grade the records properly and you can buy safely, if not satisfied I´ll refund your money (not if you change your mind about the tune though!). Gradings are stricter than many major UK dealers I reckon and a M should be virtually flawless, most M- are basically the same while some have very slight visual wear. All records, gardless of grading should play fine unless stated ! If you need to ask me anything don´t hesitate to do so. Many of these records can be heard at various internet sites but if you need to hear anything you can give me a call at +46 40 26 27 76 (between 1800-2100 CET!). Records will be packed and shipped the usual way with cardboard stiffeners. I prefer reply by e-mail but it´s ok to phone me. Any orders will be dealt with in the order I receive them.
Insurance(registered mail) up to £33 =£3.30 up to £675 = £5, this is on top of postage.Postage should be about european average. Mail is usually very reliable between Sweden,UK&US (I have never lost anything yet). I might give discount on shipping/records depending on how much/what you buy! Trades considered, good stuff/good condition, not necessarily very expensive stuff. Hope you find something, Christian Hermansson. E-mail: sectleader@hotmail.com

Prestatyn Weekender 08-11 March - A preview

Prestatyn Weekender 08-11 March - A preview of the first one

Other day got asked from a friend who was attending an pre-event meeting at the Prestatyn Sands Holiday Centre, concerned with the forth coming weekender, if fancied coming along.
He asked us along as live close by and so could see the facilities at first hand and pass on to those interested my view on it all.
Anyway have heard that this venue is purpose built for a weekender, with facilities, infra-structure and all, and is going to be one that will take these events to another level, true or hype ? Well hit read more for my quick view on it all

Well first of all as seems to happen with all events, sometimes the odd ill founded rumour starts doing the rounds and one heard someone passing on was definitely put to rest. If anyone tells you that there is no live backing band , just reply bollocks. Have been assured that a top quality backing band has been jacked up, well worthy of the calibre of these artists.

Well it certainly seems good news for those who have booked as ...first impression is very impressive.
As the venue is actually Pontins Prestatyn Holiday Sands Centre, well the name should tell you that it seems we are talking another level up from other close by similar events. The whole infra structure is up, working and proven, access, roads, parking, all seem more than ample for the even. Other facilities on offer are the normal holiday centre type things, a supermarket, 4 different style food outlets, swimming pool and more, check out Pontins leaflet at Holiday Agents for full info.
The actual Chalets sound thayt they are up to a good standard, Not 100% sure difference between normal and club class but know the club class does includes video, microwave, and sky TV and more.
The 24 hr radio seems to have been given a lot of thought, with professionals from neighbouring stations involved and the output set up to run into each chalet thru the TV system so seems like should be rock solid and clear.
So from what I heard and seen on the facilities all seems of a very good standard and very impressive.

On the actual hall, well as said has been described as purpose made for a weekender and after seeing it have got to agree, seems more like a cinema with large foyer stairs and s on, a well large sprung dancefloor, (no sledges required ) and a large proper stage making up the main bits of the main room, plus as a bonus at the back of hall theres tiered seating, so a good view of the live acts is available. Then next to the floor theres the large bar area and large record dealers area.(Was told that still room left for more - phone for details) All looked pretty smart and spacious. Didnt get to see modern room but was told of same standard.

Live acts as per flyers - Tony Middleton Ray Pollard in main room plus also
Shabazz in modern room.
Live band - Most definitely a live backing band, have been told be a top class supporting band

Thats about it, just a quick heads up, from what saw and heard today. Gotta say to me after looking first hand at the facilities, dj line up, acts,
organisation and all seems like definitely going to be a winner. Then with the low pricing, and also after hearing future plans think this is going to
be one popular and regular event
Its on 08-11 Mar 02, web site at http://www.soulweekenders.com
Tel 08705 331199

No connection at all to event. Mate asked me along as live close by, so could have a look and pass on my view on what I see.I was impressed.
