Been chatting to Tim in Detroit about the next Detroit R&B Classics release. The question troubling us all is what format to put it out in. Volume one came out in CD format only, but many guys over in europe said they would have liked to have seen it as a vinyl release, if not the whole LP maybe the tracks by Funk Factor.

Now it's nearly ready to for volume 2 and again there are some cool DJ friendly tracks on there so do you put out CD again, vinyl LP, 12" single or a 45 of dance tracks. Whats peoples view ???

What about an EP? The Goldwax one Kent brought out for International Record Store day really stood out as something special.

Been thinking about a four track 12", now I know the love of the 45 on here, but the Funk Factor track is 6mins and isn't the sort of thing you can edit or mix down.

If the music is done justice by its format then by all means go for a 12" EP. I doubt many would balk at a 12 release if thats the best format. It is supposed to be whats in the grooves that counts after all! Not sure how all the financials work out but would have thought a limited run of vinyl would certainly be worth it.

Generally it seems that many veiw a vinyl release almost as a loss leader to promote CD and download sales for a LP.

It's likley that I will fund the 12" release, as I can make a small press make sence financially and let the guys in Detroit do the CD, that way they also make more money.

Some people release only on LP format with a coupon to download it for free once.

I think that's a good idea.

What about Cd format with Limited edition Album format or is that too costly.

Vinyl if it's done right it becomes an instant collectors item and as original format it's still the hardest format to bootleg.

I preffer the CD release (great for the car, to put into ipod,etc), and after some 45´s with unissued cuts from the CD :-P

vinyl and cd. but if it can only be 1 format then i say vinyl as i am sure most soul releases are best put on vinyl
