Well it seems a long time ago now, but as a kid I only had 2 Holidays #1 Walton on the Maze.aged 6. and #2 Walton on the Naze aged 8,, and when I say holiday, they were a 1 day Beano. I don't recall anything from the 1st trip, but on Tip #2 i remember finding a tanner 6d and putting it in a juke box, out of nowhere came 3 older boys, much older they were Teddy Boys, they said to me "give me my Tanner back that I dropped on the Floor? we saw you pick it up" having removed the 6d from my snotty hands, they pushed me away and laughed, then ed ext thing I herd the sound of my 6d fall into the Jupiter, (the record started to play "Big Bad John" I did not want that I wanted Pat Boone Speedy Gonzales? and blow me down the next record was the one I wanted, and to this day, the memory of me having one over on the TED'S,

tears later 1069 EASTER WEEKEND I finally got to great Yarmouth on my TV175 Series it's a long way from Hartfordshire, drove down the front and pulled into a caf.e just before you get to South Deans as i entered the caf the juke box was playing CREDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL BAD MOON RISING, I sat down with a HOT ROSIE and swallowed 5 Blues, the next record I can remember was just as the dubes started to kick in the UKs first REGGAE #1. DESMOND DECKER'S ISRAELITES this record along with half a dozen more become not just a part of me, but also a Pareto of everybody who had my ideals that year, so thanks DESMOND DECKER from the real SPIRIT OF 69. WHATS YOUR FAVE? DAVE

Speedy Gonzales - the second record that I bought! The first was Telstar, by the Tornados (first U.S. number one by a British group) - must 'ave been '62 or '63 - that takes me back a bit!!

As for Easter records on the coast, well I can't remember the first few - would 'ave been from '67 onwards and down at Hastings mostly (Cobweb club if anyone remembers that!) - the one biggie that I can recall was from 1970 down at Bournemouth and it was Return of Django by the Upsetters - I think it was out of the charts by then, but still a great, great tune!

.... around the same sort of time I was also frequenting the Marina at Portsmouth, and one of the the great tracks from that era was The Entertainer by Tony Clarke, another was I Can't Leave Your Love Alone from Clarence Carter - another couple of tracks from that era were A Message to You Rudy and Rudi's In Love, both by the Locomotive - a white reggae band from Brum that predated UB40 - in fact I think a member of Locomotive produced UB40's first record..

Quite correct : Bob Lamb who produced " Signing Off " for UB40 with Ray Falconer , was a dummer with Locomotive at one period .

HI THE VERY LAST TRIP TO THE COAST ON A BANK HOLIDAY WAS TO MARGATE, AND THEN IT WAS THE BALL-I Which had large numbers in and Winston Groovy - "please don't make me cry" was played almost on the hour every hour, as you say memories DAVE

as a young teenager growing up in Skegness..i remember many bank holidays..scooters lined up on the foreshore from one end to the other Mods completely taking over the compass gardens..i'd recently bought 'Patches' Clarence carter, but the real gem was on the b side, 'just cant leave your love alone' also remember dancing to Long shot kick de bucket at my school disco..and Roy 'C' shotgun Wedding..

Brighton August bank holiday probably 66 after all the action around the Palace pier found myself in the 101 club on the road up to the station near the front,some on the hard stuff, some on dubes others wanting to fight the world with The Small Faces 'What You Gonna Do' playing most of the night. Glad to get out alive.

Spot on there Paul.Last time I went there was with Crookie and his brother Tony,john Tappenden,John harris,me,and two gals from Wing,allthe way there in Grahams minivan!!!

John Harris knew the owner there (think the family were Greek but cant remember names) and we stayed in one of the rooms over the top of Grapes.

John Harris knew the owner there (think the family were Greek but cant remember names) and we stayed in one of the rooms over the top of Grapes.

Last time I was down Margate with John there was me, Beresford Thomas, Pete (senior moment, see the face not the name), just remembered Pete Garner, anyway we spent the night in the car park behind Grapes, me and John off our heads on acid, BLOODY STRONG ACID, John cracked up, chasing cars down the back road behind Grapes, convinced it was same driver trying to f*ck us up, NOT a good trip.

The pub behind had it's windows put through, i can recall quite clearly that moment, i was standing on a table leading the song "ALOWETE" GOD OLD "ALOWETTE" HOW I LOVED HER BUCKLED TEETH, BLOD SHOT EYE'S STRANGELY HAIR......After a knees up and a burst of "HARRY ROBERTS IS MY FREIND!... HE KILLS COPER'S, "OVER THE WALL WE GO ALL COPPERS ARE BASTARDS" Which was the call for prepare for trouble, as the Old Bill had arrived and strait into the chant "if you all hate the (whatever) clap your habds" next vers ended stomp your boot's my last vers was " if you all hate this pub smash a glass" and on cue the pub was wrecked, the Old Bill were Decked and the windows went through, after a mass exit,

I landed up in the arcade under The OASIS after 1 hour had passed, we left by the back entrance, Chris G my brother 2 geezers from Hemel and 4 from Watford and I am sure Dave Pugh and another LUTON bloke,

When we reached the green there was a lot of grebe's on there, once spotted they come for us, one of them had a German army helmet on, we stood our ground, this was the incident when SNOWY an albino RUDE BOY from WATFORD got a garden rake and combed the face off this GREBES, it was the strangest thing I had ever sen his face come off! every thing just stopped, the next thing i did with Chris was run, We hid in the back of a van for 2 hours, SNOWY got HER MAJERSTY'S PLEASURE, No one else got caught,

I was thinking a few years ago when I did the DISCOTHEQUE 68 & 70 That the music that was played in the NEW BEACH CELLAR BAR would be the inspiration for DISCOTHEQUE 69, Some great soul and reggae come out or was being played including some great Pop music,

As for the shirt question the fashion was to look smart, which meant shirt in, but in this picture and taking in the circumstances of the Yarmouth Bank Holidays throughout 69 most of us stayed in the cattle trucks in the sidings, which was convenient for the café we named "the hut on the bridge" we ail used the WC's on the sea front to wash, especially the SOUTH DEANS Caravan park ones

NICKY BIST Dad who come from WALTHEM X won the pools and bought the land for the North Deans Park, I GOT TO ADMIT THE YARMOUTH AND NORWICH BOYS "IN CROWD" Were excellent, we had 1 fight and then we were al mates and quite clearly the Gt Yarmouth boys could all handle themselves, most of them worked on the gas Riggs, the girls from the town worked at BIRDS EYE FACTORY and were out off bounds to every one who was not in the IN CROWD, i COULD WRIGHT A BOOK ON COAST IN 69 AND 70, MAYBE WORTH A READ, BUT MY DYSLEXIA, MAKES IT LITERALLY HARD, DAVE

Good read that D. We used to doss in the r/carriages on the sidings to.Do you remember after dark if the swing bridge was up an old geezer used to take you across on a small boat? Boozer that we all hung out in was called the crows nest and we used to get in there 11am when it opened and just ponce about till it shut 2-3ish.Remember when we first all got there on the saturday when all the factories used to shut for a fortnight big local yokel sounding bouncer told us we,d never take the locals so behave. That night he got a kicking and were,nt seen again.Was about 60-100 of us from Luton and nearly as many from Northampton all firmed up together and was first holiday I,d ever had with mates.In that picture I don,t think there,s anyone over 17 though older geezers were down there and being a bit cuter and richer genarally had rooms or caravans.I met a local girl who used to give me change for a fiver in the local Boots if I bought something cheap so was quids in.As you can imagine was always trying to get her to get me some dubes but she would,t oblige.Blond geezer in that piccie. right in the middle is a Northampton bloke called Wally who used to go to Kelmarsh, Harborough e.t.c. and stayed on the scene right into the Wigan days (used to get his gear in Luton) Anyone know what happened, where he,s at? Just up the road from the crows nest was the Tower ballroom with a disco bit called the Oasis used to play a few decent sounds but generally chart stuff and I was lashed one night and being a pain and a bouncer (so I,m told) punched me and I went up a fight of stairs.Suppose lucky I was pointing right direction. Was a disco away from the front on the market square called Cloud nine opened till after midnight used to play fair bit of reggae,motown + stax atlantic stuff plus a few early classics like cool jerk, ready now, right track and couple of others.Were,nt open every night and on the friday on the first week when a lot were going home next day it kicked off with only a handful of BIG scousers and few sheer numbers we done em but the place got wrecked in the progress and never opened the second week.Always remmember a huge scouser well bleeding standing there ripped shirt with a broken bottle and everyone backed off for a sec. and geezer J.Smithy from Luton jumped from the stage on to a sofa sat there and bought him down with a flying dive and got kicked to bits with the scouser. Next thing billies everywhere and it,s scatter out of the fire exits.As I said a lot went home first saturday and though few arrived were,nt so many there second week.I remember 2nd week the local rag reported there,d been a crime wave mainly smash and grabs and what we called crowding where 20-30 of ya would be in a clothes shop with 1 poor assistant and 5mins later the stock had gone.Went back the next year buts never the same and was too much into me dubes by then to enjoy it the same.Suppose it was coming of age holiday and I can remember it like it was yesterday.Could go on forever about other incidents, like Dave said though could write a book.Wish I had some more pics.Suprised that ones just survived.
