Hi all,

I've been playing Rose Mitchell - Baby Please Don't Go from the RoseAnn release (flip is Jo Ann Henderson's version, originally on Phonograph). The Rose Mitchell originally came out in 1954 on Imperial 5260. Has anyone ever seen one of these? Was it released on 45 or 78 or both? Lastly, does anyone have it for sale (45 only)? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

never seen it john.. none on popsike . chances are it looks like her previous 45 on the label. lookin at the info the reissue sells for £50+ so the orig would be more if it surfaced. good luck with the search

i've seen 3 originals , all in the same box .... it is on 45 and 78 and i know people who have both

pricewise , if you can ever find one expect it to be £800+

1954? Don't know where John has been playing it or on what 'scene' but that must surely be the oldest record? We'll soon be back in the 40's. Not knocking it though, anything's better than modern soul.

it's an R&B thing pete lol, and i think Hound dog by big mama thornton is '53 ... I also play 78's and would need to check the dates on them but i'm sure some of them will be earlier

Fantastic - never understood why people knock r&b, it's the roots of everything we profess to love!

its amazing the 2 year old jazzman reissue sells for £50+.................i wont knock r n b........... but me give 70`s and crossover any day of the year

Sounds worth about 8 quid to my ears! Don't like it. It's like a spiritual, too sparse by a mile and the intro is horrible. It's still better than any crossover record though.

Gotta admit that I've always thought the same Pete.

The Rose Mitchell is indeed very rare, but not a patch on the Jo Ann Henderson version imo...and even though the JAH has been hammered to death over the last 5+ years it still sounds great out loud in a small'n'sweaty R&B club

Agree on the intro. I'd certainly be dropping this in at 0:40 -- which should take about 200 off the price ya?

you are of course correct Mace, it's on an R&B women comp, can't remember the exact title but i have it somewhere. For the better option is the Gizzelle version of the same song and yes i do drop it about 40 secs in

As to £800, that puts it well out of my range, even assuming I liked it enough to pay that kind of figure. Does anyone know if the Roseann release is legal? For £50 it ought to be . Just as an aside, I was 4 years old in 1954, so, for me, it's sort of contemporary , along with ration books, farthings and co-op milk tokens .

if its the same jazzman i would have thought it legit john but at £50+ ....get out of town . i wouldnt pay that for it on imperial. well i would but i`d flog it

I must have seen well over a dozen copies sold this year, so it isn't that rare, just another must-have record with a typically inflated price. I'd never heard the Rose Mitchell version. I quite like it, but not for silly money.

it is definitely legal yes, all of the releases done by that particular club are legal

lolol ... well i`m a northern soul man that just happens to like crossover and 70`s. never understood the r n b thing. i like a bit of it. it sounds like rock n roll to me but each to his own pal..... see you at the horti and the chillout

My dj partners at Oldies Night in San Francisco designed the label for the Gizzelle 45, Nick Waterhouse pointed the Rose Mitchell out and I think it's great but the Gizzelle may be a little bit better for a dancefloor. I often skip the intro as well.

yep, the Gizzelle version is pretty good in my book , played it at Whiby last year at start of freestyle session - had an interesting reaction as un beknown to me some one had left the pa at full volume, so the intro battered a few ear drums
