This as probably been discussed before, but on a recent vist to Tunstall I was only a few streets away from Hose Street and decided to look up the old valhalla, what a surprise when I saw the plaque saying

" World Famous Soul Club 1964-1972"

The Torch shut in March 1973, any reason for this?

Would upload the photo as proof, but for some reason I can't.

Sensible answers, and no I hadn't had a drink before.

Shelly,

Photo-see left .....

Don't why the year is wrong or who got it done but , like you, I came across it when going through Tunstall.

Rick

The plaque was commissioned by , and paid for out of their own pockets by two old Torchites ( whose names escape

me at present ) .

The date on the plaque is an error , and should read " 1965 - 1973 " .

The Torch plaque was commissioned and paid for by John O'Brien (aka OB) who has now sadly passed away. The date was a mistake by a mis-communication between John and the manufacturer. Due to John's ill health at the time he decided not to pursue the mistake.

Regards.

I think we can live with the error.

Great idea and we should embrace commemorating places of interest and importance less we forget.

I never visited the Torch, Cats Whiskers or Va Vaas but I know their importance and how they helped shape the music we all love.

Just a bit off topic 2 years ago there was a guy at one of the twisted wheel sunday sessions asking for names for a petition to get a blue plaque on the whitworth Strret building,

Think also they were looking at one for the brazenose site?

I have not heard anything about it since.

Anybody know owt??

Getting English Heritage to grant an official blue plaque award was I seem to recall , a very lengthy one process, and the criteria involved was contrived and involved to say the least Spike .

I think that because of that , EH are willing to give advice and guidance to individuals , groups and organisations , that are interested in putting up plaques for whatever reasons .

The people wishing to get a BPA for the two TW sites , may be better looking to doing something similar to that of The Torch one , and to that which was commisioned to commemorate The Cats .

Yes the guy said it was a long process!

At the other end of whitworth street stands the old haciender site which has been converted into city appartments (2 mins walk from the ritz!)

This building has a blue heritage plaque celebrating it's former life!

Obviously by doing so , EH obviously considered that The Ha§ienda's short lived contribution to popular musical culture in the

UK was significantly more important to that of The Twisted Wheel .

Malc

Either that or factory records company could make a bigger contribution to EH's coffers!!
