Once a record skips, will it always skip or can a really good cleaning sometimes make it stop?

Got my eye on a record i want (for some time) with a few skips, but I thinking of taking a chance as it's going for a song (no pun intended).

Sometimes if you're careful you can stop the cause of the skip with a cocktail stick run through the grooves where the needle is normally diverted to miss some of the record out.

Bought a Lost Souls which was advertised with a few skips and the sound file provided evidence of it,

10 min soak (soapy water)...bingo thats all it needed.....bargain......

Think the only way is a really good clean unless it's inherent in the record. Isopropyl alcohol and a good cleaning cloth should do the trick. If that doesnt work, then its more likely to be in the pressing and you aint gonna do diddly squat about it other than two pence on the needle (not recommended). Maybe a higher grade stylus would help but its no good if you want to play the 45 out

To be honest, going to give it a miss I think, keep telling myself condition is all important, then I see a bargain & get blinded, but i'll leave it alone.

This has worked for me on a few occasions, but not all

First try cleaning the disk, if that fails place the disk on your turn table and the stylus on the bit with the skip, then with your finger move you finger on the turntable forwad and backwards as much as you feel is needed, (Like you where scratching) then try playing to see if the skips cleared, if not increse the weight on the tone arm and repeat, and repeat til it plays increasing the tone arm weight as needed, when and if you clear the skip you need to repeat the process decresing the tone arm weight back to you normal setting, if i carnt get it to play at a lower weight setting I wright the tone arm setting needed to play the disc on the sleve for future referance

Thanks for the post, sounds like good advise.

I decided to leave the Danny Woods You Had Me Fooled as it happens, sold for $77 (it was $30 when I was watching it), still a snip if you could clear the skip.

I've decided to up the quality of all my records purchased in future, just get so tempted when i see a bargain.

Managed to resist the temptation this time.

If i can see the groove kinked by looking under a magnifying glass....then I use the cocktail stick or needle method.

In the past I have used a blunt graphite pencil over the defected area, rubbing it lightly back and forward.

Also a deep clean with Copydex wood glue on the area helped, smooth it into groove, let it dry to flexible but not tacky, then peel off.
