Yes, he was famous in the US, though mainly on the R&B circuit.

He was based 'darn south' and played lots of shows in Miami (an ad for his shows is on the Óld Miami Shows' thread I think).

.... but .... he also played gigs all across the US including at the Apollo in New York.
