I came across a copy of this at home, this weekend.

What is it? Where's it from? And why did it get booted?

It's a reissue

Original is a 70's Jamaican item ....

guess the guy was trying to cash in on Nat KING COLE's name, probably did lots of NKC's songs in his live act.

Maybe 2nd press was done to meet New York area demand (Pete S will probably know better than me).

Winston George "King" Cole  ... was singer with Canadian reggae band Well Charged.

 

I know it's the same track but must admit I love this video of him.

Lots of Bajans & Jamaicans headed off to the UK in the 60's / 70's ..........

BUT just as many headed off to Canada, Miami & New York to find jobs / secure a future for themselves.

Like the Caribbean exiles here in the UK, the Canadian & US based ones got nostalgic for home and the music they had grown up with.

So, in Canada, Miami & New York, little labels sprung up to meet the demand for 60's / 70's 'Island music'.

Hence lots of ska, reggae & 'Island soul' has been reissued in the US over the last 30 years.

Micron has a Canadian connection i think the owner moved there

On DISCOGS, it says that the Soul Vibe label was US based.

The producer of "I Wonder Why" was Errol Thompson.

He also worked with the likes of Horace Andy, Gregory Isaacs & Dennis Brown back then.

The group with Winston (W King Cole) still play gigs, can't be bad as he must be a good age.

It says on there that the original version was cut & released in 66 but I think that's about 8 years too early.

These "Soul Vibes" reissues/boots/whatever they are, appeared sometime around about 10[ish] years back....It started getting a bit of a rep amongst collectors of the two-step style over here and also Modern Soul folk...Not sure really why this was reissued as i never thought there was any demand outside of these hardcore collectors circles.Maybe there was indeed demand abroad.......who knows? I originally heard this via our own Tony Rounce who used to give this a spin at our Sidedoor Soul Club events around London Town late 80`s /early 90`s.....Tony,on the ball as ever, was light years ahead of the pack with this one...Also,other J.A. related tunes by The Pioneers " My Good Friend James"& The Mighty Diamonds "Never Say Goodbye" were championed by Tony Rounce [and no one else] at the same time.It really annoys me when the wrong people get credited with certain records. Tony was definitely first with these on the Soul Scene....Great days......

  Also, its on another Original label as well as "Micron".......The label name escapes me now,but the only copy i know of is owned by Gareth Donovon from Essex.Its got a multi colour label design..There was a thread about this before,not sure if it was on this forum though.

Oh! I have Billy Cole on UK Power Exchange.. I'd never connected the two!

 

Eddie Spencer's version of the Precisions 'If This is Love' was another one out of Canada...
