Savoy Gospel Tracks

Savoy was a major player in the gospel field thru the 1950's, 1960's and into the 1970's.

The label put out loads of great tracks during that period, anyone out there got any particular faves or recommendations.

 

I'll start of with this 1973 cut ...... The Metro-Tones Inc ......... "Get Together"

I've also got a Savoy LP that features tracks cut during a (radio stn) WAOK Gospel Caravan Show.

This features 2 tracks that just consist of sermons but also lists 6 musical numbers (2 each from the Fulton Singers & Gospel Coronets + 1 from the Pattersonaires & 1 from Rev Squeekie Morgan), However when you play the LP, another track is also on there.

This is the 5 Saints singing "Jesus Looks After Me" and it's a really nice male harmony track.  

Sorry to butt in Greg and u Gospel specialists...!!!!x I'm in need of your help!x I had a tune in the 90's on a studio acetate by Thelma Houston called 'Stealing In The Name Of The Lord'. Hand written and I think it was dated '74? It was done in an British recording studio too if I recall the info on the label....a kind of session spot it seemed? I loved it...her voice is awesome on it 'full on' and the tune has a real bouncy/happy 70's feel to it.....great all round! I played it twice on me travels as a personal choice among me set...it was that good!x Each year from '94 I made an 'anniversary tape' featuring the tunes i;d played around the UK and gave it to my Soul Night attendees for the Anniversary who may not have heard these tunes whilst I was all nightering it....I put it on there and have that here. However...I let the record go as it wasn't prominent in my play box for the job at hand I had Nationally.....so it went! I have looked for it on Utube......it's nowhere! The only copy I have found which is the tune is this....by Paul Kelly...

...is the Thelma version 'rare'.....or wot.....?! Never heard or seen the record to this day since '95 until playing Pauls version just now!x Genuinly interested as I wouldn't mind getting that version again...!x

Un-issued as a 45. It's on her "Thelma Houston" LP (Mowest) 1973

 

The US album has only 10 tracks and DOES NOT include "Stealing" but the UK & Germany issues which have 14 tracks does.

...and thinking about it....it could have had  1973 written  on the date by hand! Had somebody Emidisced it or summink? I am ignorant of these things! It had plain uncut vinyl on the back and was heavy!x

At a guess mate, you had a genuine studio acetate for whatever reason it was cut. Possible that someone cut it to an Emi but can't see why they would when the LP track was available over here. Although there were 4 tracks extra on the UK LP one possible reason "Stealing" was left off the US issue is that Paul Kelly's cut caused a bit of a rumpus with the holy ones and perhaps Motown didn't want the hassle of it.

RE: a UK Acetate of Thelma H's "Stealin In Name of Lord" ....

....... She toured the UK (as a support act for the 4 Tops) in 72 and I guess EMI were thinking of puttin out an extra UK 45 on her to tie in with her shows here.

As "Stealin" by Paul Kelly didn't get a UK release, maybe EMI were thinking of going with that track here.
