Vinyl album sales are flourishing as figures show they could pass the million mark by the end of the year - the best return for almost 20 years. The Official Charts Company figures show almost 800,000 vinyl albums have been sold in the first nine months of this year - already beating last year's total of 780,674. The last time vinyl topped a million sales was in 1996 when they shifted 1,083,206 albums.

So far this year, 112 releases have sold in excess of 1,000 copies, more than double the 50 which had done so in the first nine months of last year.

Given that once upon a time a single LP release or a 45 could sell a million or more, it's not exactly a second coming, but still, there's life in the format yet. These figures only consider LP sales and not the burgeoning market for new vinyl 45 releases - and of course it doesn't give any thought to the flourishing global sales of 2nd hand vinyl.

Never ever went away for me but definitely on an upward trend as we all already know!

The downside of this is that it has become a big problem for small independent labels trying to get anything pressed, since the few remaining vinyl presses are working round the clock manufacturing product for major labels which were very quick to try and put the nails into the coffin of a format they found unprofitable...

Wish I could find more information on the rumours that major labels bought a pressing plant in the late 80s and... tossed it in the sea. To help speed the death of vinyl.

Its that Ian Dewhirst's fault, obviously!

Oh and that Croasdell fella, rumour has it he is always pushing the stuff.

Why cant they let us virtual people change the world, virtually.
