January 29, 200718 yr Apparently she is, thought i could remember her dying of a drug related problem in the 90's Has anyone tried or succeded in getting her over here for a performance recently ? Edited January 29, 200718 yr by Bogue
January 29, 200718 yr shes a very pale black woman Etta's dad was white, so you're right on both counts!
January 29, 200718 yr Author Basically Etta's 'official' portrait photographer saw a clip of her that I'd put on YouTube and apparently Etta didn't even know it existed (neither did anyone else by the looks of some of the comments) and she was so blown away by it that she asked if I would do her a dvd of it, so I did, forgot about it, then this signed photo arrived today. No sign of the $1000 I asked for Here's the clip, it's fantastic.
January 29, 200718 yr Etta's dad was white, so you're right on both counts! I didn't think she knew who her dad was...... was there talk of him being a pro baseball player.....
January 29, 200718 yr Definately alive, saw her in Toronto last tear, well the ticket said it was her!?!
January 29, 200718 yr I didn't think she knew who her dad was...... was there talk of him being a pro baseball player..... No , EJ father was not a pro baseball player . It was alleged that her father was Rudolph " Minnesota Fats " Wanderone ; who at one time , was considered to be the greatest pool player in the United States . Etta - real name Jamesetta Hawkins - celebrated her 69th birthday on January 25th . Malc
January 29, 200718 yr Apparently she is, thought i could remember her dying of a drug related problem in the 90's Has anyone tried or succeded in getting her over here for a performance recently ? When a Jazz singer named Etta Jones died in 2001 it was mistakenly reported that Etta James had died, this might have been what you heard.
January 29, 200718 yr When a Jazz singer named Etta Jones died in 2001 it was mistakenly reported that Etta James had died, this might have been what you heard. Thanks for that Crumb, maybe that was it Pleasant surprise to know she's still with us anyway
January 30, 200718 yr Thanks for that Crumb, maybe that was it Pleasant surprise to know she's still with us anyway I'd heard that Merry Clayton had died many years ago, but have just been informed there's a recent interview with her in "In The Basement" mag! (Hope she's genuinely fine and well and they didn't get the interview through a "medium"!)
February 2, 200718 yr Merry Clayton. Dead? You obviously never watched Cagney & Lacy 'cause she was in that for years, and had something to do with the recording of the Who's Tommy - still, no one could improve that could they? Actually the In The Basement interview with her is really interesting. Back to Etta James, I read through this thread the other day and thought it was a really lovely story and told a couple of friends. I was 'dragged' into a dress shop today and the owner was playing an Etta James compilation. It certainly cured the boredom of waiting for my friend to make up her mind what dress she wanted, and I started chatting to the owner, complimenting her on her taste in music. Turns out she's a big EJ fan (how often do you meet them in the outside world?) and she loved the story.
February 3, 200718 yr Merry Clayton. Dead? You obviously never watched Cagney & Lacy 'cause she was in that for years, and had something to do with the recording of the Who's Tommy... Yes, I'm absolutely delighted she's still around! Her reading of "Emotion" (MCA, 1980) was an instant classic in my view, and one of the most exciting and soulful recordings of the era! However, both Cagney and Lacy and "Tommy" were events that pre-dated the reports of her supposed "demise"!

However, both Cagney and Lacy and "Tommy" were events that pre-dated the reports of her supposed "demise"! The last time MC recorded was in 1996 . Outstanding set of pipes on the lady ..... her vocals on The Rolling Stones track " Gimme Shelter " is first rate . Her parents called her Merry - this is not a joke - because of the time of year she was born ..... Malc Burton
