I was really looking forward to this, thinking it was going to be some rare old footage of one of the best cover versions ever, by one of my favourite groups. To say I was disappointed is a massive understatement. It looked like modern concert footage which is fine, it was too much to hope for to see something from the orig 70's version, but what was the cheesy music that was dubbed on top of the concert footage? There was no way the musicians in that clip were playing that plastic squeaky synth music. Where was the music from the musicians on the stage? She still is a mother of a singer though.

How ya doin' Ivor, it was good to meet you at Prest. Yeah I think you must be right about the Ian Levine connection, I don't think anyone else would have used such tasteless parping synths. What a waste of an opportunity to re record that track in a sympathetic modern style. Can't wait for the 45!!

The vocal and backing track are both 'Motorcity' recordings, it came out AGES ago on 12" and the vocal is utterly fantastic, real proper Soul. If you listen to the track in a club you will hear how fantastic it is. But on small cheap home speakers I suspect it sounds like your average tinny 60's recording. Ask your local DJ to play it for you.

The original backing tracks for the two bits of film used were not very good, but then you probably haven't heard them so you wouldn't know.

I didn't realise until I've since looked that it was on Ian's my space. To be honest I've always stayed as far away as possible from Ian's recordings since the days of the Exciters and LJ Johnson. He's always been involved with the shit and tacky end of contemporary studio production techniques both audio and video as far as I'm concerned. You say the vocal is fantastic, well so it would be, it's the Sisters Love for gawd's sake. It would take more than an Ian Levine synth by numbers backing track to hide that. Ian has always used cracking vocal artistes without any doubt, but he should have used a heavy duty bunch of seasoned musicians to do the vocalists justice. All in my opinion of course. If Incognito had got the job of playing on that track I don't think I'd be saying any of this. As for hearing the track in a club, well I like clubs that would play the original. Modern studio production techniques don't necessarily make a good piece of music, it depends on the producer, arranger and engineer. I never liked that Frances Nero Motor City thing come to think of it either, it all sounds like Stock Aitkin and Waterman to me. Totally soulless (apart from the vocals of course.)

I'd love to Simon. Unfortunately I ain't got the funds or the time or a studio. I know some good musicians who could do it justice though. Surely I'm entitled to an opinion despite the fact I'm not personally in a position to do it. I know it takes effort, money and a love and passion to do anything of worth, and i respect Ian Levine for choosing proper good vocal artistes. I just think he always misses the mark musically and it ends up being a waste of enormous talent on behalf of the vocalists. Now where's my Delroy Wilson - Worth your weight in gold lp gone, some cracking cover versions on that.

Steve, Vermettya was lead singer with 'Sisters Love' on A&M and Mowest (she's not on the Manchild 45) who are finally getting more recognition via the CD comp that came out last year, which I have to confess I've still not seen..is all the unreleased Motown stuff on it? I overheard a conversation the other day, apparently a Motown 45 of "Give Me Your Love" went for £100 on ebay recently, so the price is creeping up.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Vermettya well when she was here a few years back and spent time with her in L.A...Vermettya is an ex Ikette, an ex Raelette (She told me she was on both 'Let's Go Get Stoned' and 'I Don't Need No Doctor' ) and she was a member of The Clara Wards Singers...and that shows in her performance style with the dancing and the handkerchief ! She performed a number of times here, and recorded some tracks at least one of which is a fabulous ballad. I had a whole video of a Gospel show she did in a church here in London...I was pinned to my seat throughout the whole performance.

I just don't get it Simon.

Why does IL constantly butcher classic soul records, and in this case one of the finest Motown 70's tunes.

It's a bit like someone in the world of fine art copying known masters (Turners, Renoirs, Constables etc), but getting them all horribly wrong and distorted. They just wouldn't be taken seriously there, and I can't take these horrid remakes seriously either.

I think your arguments would hold some water if IL was recording and pushing new songs on Vermetta, rather than trying to remake what is a classic Curtis Mayfield song. I'd rather hear a "Standing on solid ground" type of thing (albeit I don't like that song), than these Motown remakes.....which are almost Frankenstien like in their conception

Pushing Steve? It's a back catalogue track that's all and the technology now exists to share it on video at no cost or obligation to anyone, which is all thats been done. Nobody is forced to listen to it or watch it.

As for the 'almost Frankenstein' bit...I understand your passion and I have the same passion myself, but your possessiveness and your implied notion that everything you hold dear has some kind of untouchable sacrosanct 'purity' is a bit worrying and sounds like the kind of thing that was being said thirty years ago.

There are a whole load of other Sisters Love/Vermettya Royster recordings that you would dislike too so why worry about it at all ?

Oh I like all of the Sisters Love tracks on A&M, Mowest, Motown etc, I am commenting on the re-recording of the song by IL, not the Sisters themselves by gum!

Or any musicians who didn't play a Rolf Harris Stylofone (or whatever it was called.) Cheap jokes apart, proper bass, drums, percussion, guitar, brass and flute produced in a contemporary style would have helped do the track a bit of justice. I don't want to harp on this any more but it's just one of my favourite 70's tunes and I really think given the right treatment could finally make a bit of cash for the Sisters Love.
