Really good article, and an important reminder that we cannot separate the music from the people and society that delivered it . I would like to make a plug for a ground breaking series that informed me.

Thanks for the positive comments. I remember watching that series. I can still sing the title tune in my head, it made a big impression on me.  Brilliant TV. They should put it on again.

    Just a minor correction- Louis Armstrong's "(What Did I Do to Be So) Black and Blue" is actually from the late 1920's -
