September 25, 200717 yr Why would a demo have a drill hole in it ? one of the first things I was told to look out for was demos with drill holes. demos were given away, not sold and as such never got returned to distributors, so never got drilled before being sold on cheep or am I talking B****X again

Derek
September 25, 200717 yr Then again maybe not all demos that were pressed were sent out and when the record was deleted the remaining demos were drilled along with the remaining stock of issues? Derek The whole point of a demo was to be sent out, given away to promote the single release. and they cost money, why would you pay to advatise and then not use it, just dos'nt make sence to me wouldnt the demos be at the head office, the issues at a wherehouse or distrubution centre, sent out on sale or return, if they never sold returned and drilled to stop them being returned twice, even if some demos were returned, the recored companys would not pay up on them and as they are marked up as a demo they is no need to mark them as returned stock and no need to drill them
September 25, 200717 yr Just had a shower and been thinking about this, wer'nt a couple of the precisions on a white lable issue anyway, and reading the posts back no one seems to of said it was a demo anyway, im'e gonna guess its the last 2 as i seem to recall them being distrubuted by Laurie Records, ime sure ive seen white demos, with demos printed on them To go back to the Demos with drill holes, issue, Ive just been through all my 45s amd ive not got a single one with a drill hole in it, and whilst I was thinking in the shower, I can't say i've ever seen, one has any one else ? thats enough thinking for me ive got a headache now

Think you are right about 'Instant Heartbreak' being a white issue too. Just had a look & there is no mention of promo or demo ! Have to admit to listing one up on sales as a promo back in June The one i have is still for sale if anyone wants it ? £8 & standard 1st class post free. Copy looks like unplayed store stock to be honest (see below) Edited September 25, 200717 yr by Bogue

Also a stamp but probably optional saying "THANKS Bob Sziiagy-Bill Craig SIDRA RECORDS 18292 Wyoming-Detroit MI" Matrix stamped WAKM 0326 1A" Hope that helps ROD

September 25, 200717 yr This is the other one i have in my collection, slightly different with the 'distributed by Laurie' at the top. Matrix stamp is W4KM-0326-1 at 5 O'clock & there is a stamped R at 11 O'clock. Just different pressing plants i guess ? What's the boot like then Chalky ? Can't see why someone would bother booting a cheapie ?
September 25, 200717 yr White demos purpose was to demonstrate the record to the public, primarily through radio station plays. Since there was no point in spending more than necessary on something that was never for sale, the cheapest paper for a label is white and the cheapest ink for the print is black. Of course, some issues of records where black and white labels too. They weren’t given away as they always to remain the property of the record company. Most were, if unsuccessfully making the song a hit, either binned or given to the local thrift shop. If they were a hit they remained in the radio station’s library and played, rather than being substituted by an issue (as being sold in the shops) copy. Hence only issue should end up with a drill whole, not WDs. The Drew records out of Detroit seem to be on styrene WDs and blue issues. The label number prefix is ‘D’, Sidrian Music BMI, plus a ZTSC number Instant Heartbreak is on vinyl and distributed through Laurie Records of New York. The label number prefix is ‘DR’, Ardis Music BMI, W4KM – 0326 - - 1 ( Same format ** KM - **** - - * as other NY label records, such as Carl Spencer – Cover Girl) Perhaps Mike Terry had a deal with Laurie (before or) after he moved from Detroit to NY?
September 27, 200717 yr Here's a scan of my copy, although slightly different label still an original.
September 27, 200717 yr Here's a scan of my copy, although slightly different label still an original. That's an issue as opposed to a demo? If it was a demo I presume it would say so on it or not neccessarily? Anybody? My copy is identical, just has a drill hole in it.
October 12, 200717 yr That's an issue as opposed to a demo? If it was a demo I presume it would say so on it or not neccessarily? Anybody? My copy is identical, just has a drill hole in it. Craig Moerer (recordsbymail.com) has got a DJ Copy for sale. Anyone go ahead and ask him how he identified it. Maybe the DJ copies were just stamped as DJ copies. Â Depends on the number of copies if it`s cheaper to stamp them (let them stamp by a trainee, to be honest) or print a extra label.
October 12, 200717 yr Picked up a copy of INSTANT HEARTBREAK (DREW) on a white label with a drill hole through the middle. It looks like an original and cost me £10. Anyone know if it was booted at all and what does it usually go for? Thanks in advance, you are a helpful lot Andy. I got a copy of this about 30 years ago and found both sides quite good. I think I paid about £3 or £4 for it. With inflation £10 isn't bad, you'd pay more for a new slab of vinyl!! Martin
