Hi all, just got a letter from the post office imforming that the record they're holding for me is liable for duty, 3 quid and 8 quid for the letter from the post office. This is the first time i've had to pay , so not too bothered. When does this duty come into effect, how many $'s ? on the postage label it said record all the others said used record.

i think it's anything over $29 is liable to import duty,

if you buy records from non-dealers with low feedback, it's as well to tell them to but say $5 only, and to make sure they don't put 2 noughts by the five,

it can look like $500, i've had that done to me $2 looked like $200, i think i had to pay over £20 more or send it back,

I think it might help if they mark it as a gift instead of merchandise as well.

Merchandise is something like $36 / £18 before tax applies, gifts are allowed to be more (not sure if it is double).

It happened to me recently on a $50 tune and when i asked the fella why and how i got copped on it he repilied that the PO can do this on many items from the usa and japan as its easy pickings and a quick profit for them, so beware of the future duty we will have to pay on some tunes

Had this problem in the past,had to pay £76 import duty on a delivery of records won from an auction (doesnt make them such a bargain then!) I always ask the seller now to state minimum value on the declaration e.g. 25 used records value $25,most will do this,also state as GIFTS as was informed that customs usually leave these alone.,but you can come unstuck if they go missing ,and you have to put in a claim, unfortunately this has just happened to me with an order for $1600 of records from an auction sent on 26th July which have still not arrived.I have contacted the Royal Mail help desk,but was told i can do nothing,all investigations/tracking has to be done by the seller,but he has already had my money,and as yet has not tried to track them down.All i can do is keep my fingers crossed,and hope they are just delayed.(Obviously i will not be ordering anymore from this seller,although i have dealt with them a couple of times in the past with no problems)Its all about trust,this is the first time in many years that ive anything has gone missing,but unfortunately it was a large amount.

Worry when they sting you for £2,890 . Its the fact that they charge you on the cost of the postage too that annoys me ohh and the VAT of course ohh and the fact they charge VAT on the duty and on the postage costs as well.

I rarely moan about taxes but paying tax on the tax is taking it a bit far IMO.

Still the deal was worth it
