Hi guys,

It's been a fair while since i've posted, had a lot going on what with moving to leeds and my dad dying, alas, back on the straight and narrow and i've decided lifes too short and im not gonna beat around the bush anymore, i want to start collecting.

I've got a fair few records in mind but i've decided to start small, the odd one a week or save up and get any of more value over a longer period of time, my main worry is over spending or buying records that aren't worth anything.

What's the best way to find out a value of a record and the best way to find them? Here's a few that im on the look out for, if anyone could give me a rough idea of what i could expect to pay for them and what difference labels with make and condition that would be incredible, just want a push in the right direction.

Hi Matt one of the best ways is to put which ever record you want on the WANTS section on here, everyone is very helpful and never try to rip you off, as for prices you wont go far wrong with JM's guide ( but remember that it is just a guide ) but its a good starting point. But really the best way is to get yourself out and about ,talk to people and you can always pick up a few bargains also alot of the record dealers will take a wants list off you and when they have a copy they'll let ya know.

Get the Faboulous Peps on Wheelsville, not Wee 3, as it has a great flip side on Wheelsville.

Also buy Johnny Manships bootleg guide.

Look on Popsike for prices.

Sales lists/ Sale sites will tell you the approx prices of records.

Don't waste money on price guides they are always double the real price, or four times underpriced, depending on the changing demand of the record veiwed!

I would have said Georgie Fame was more like £80 and GC's Mr Big Shot more like £40.....

....but I'm probably wrong too!!!

You'd do well to invest in a copy of Mr Manship's bootleg guide mate - could well save you a few quid.

DETRIOT SUPCION WAS THE TITLE IT WAS GIVEN AS A COVER UP, IT NEVER CAME OUT AS A 45 ITS BY THE ORIGANALS.

THE CUT WAS SLIGHTLY SPEEDED UP I THINK IT WAS MASTERD FROM A TAPE THAT WAS GOING AROUND IN THE EARLY 8TS

My advice is SHOP AROUND -

In the case Manny Corchado - Original?? £150??? May be wrong. OR you get the LEGIT re-issue on JAZZMAN records. It's all about what you can afford. If a seemingly expensive 45 looks too cheap (especially on ebay) then you HAVE to have suspicions. Yes get the Bootleg guide but save yourself some brass and JUST ASK on here Matt - There's plenty of people on here who are only too willing to help.

Nice to know theres some people i can come too now.

There seems to be a fair few on ebay.com and ebay.de that look cheap, only problem is shipping bumping up the cost.,

Guess i think that if i take my time i might find some bargains!

My advice is never be afraid to ASK!! if not sure especially on here these guys will keep you right, asking for info has allways stood me in good stead, and years ago before all this technology was the only way to learn

Hi Matt, to help myself over the pain of selling my Bobby Valentine for £20 ("Never gonna take off this one" ) it's probably cheaper now to get the "Let's turn on arrebatarnos" album on Fania. Probably about a ton on original, but there's also a legit re-issue - check out Dusty Groove or Jet Records

..........and deduct a third ....only joking, if you are buying anything that little bit special it is sometimes worth paying that little bit extra and with John M you know you will get exactly what is described.

Another good place to start is to go on to "popsike" you can see what records have made at previous JM & ebay auctions.

John and carol, manny corchado, i think you might struggle with.

Hi mate,

I'm certainly no expert as i've only been collecting a couple of years myself, I got for christmas a copy of John manships price guide and the bootleg leg price guide and think these are excellent.

My only advice would be research any records your after if you want the original. I have been caught out a few times paying full book price for a 2nd press reissue.(mainly buying on impulse)

A question i once asked on here was "what is more important the records or the labels"

The general feeling was, if you are wanting to DJ then it has to be the original, but boots , reissues etc were ok for playing in the house.

As a lot of originals or demo's are getting quite expensive demand for reissues and bootlegs are going up in prices as well.

I'm now collecting lesser known records on American labels with the help of JM price guide . You get some great bargains and some excellent tunes.
