So why do we think this is ?

I even notice on Ebay Inc that the number of 'buy nows' over straight auction have increased. Even when things go for auction many are with very high opening bids and closing un-sold or with just one winning bid.

I know everything is tight for us all, but what else do you think is driving this. ?

I THINK IT MIGHT BE BECAUSE A LOT OF AUCTION FINISHING PRICES ARE LOW , PEOPLE NOT BIDDING MUCH, WE'RE ALL LOOKING FOR BARGAINS I GUESS, SO PEOPLE ARE TRYING BUY IT NOW MAYBE TO GET THE MONEY THEY WANT,

Think there are several reasons for the current state of eBay UK:

1. They've lost a lot of buyers, fed up of browsing through page after page of boots/pressings before you actually find an original 45. I still occasionaly buy on there but now I search for specific records and bid on those.....just can't be bothered browsing through 'ending soonest' and bidding on stuff like I udsed to.

2. Visibility on eBay USA, used to be the case that if you chose 'will post worldwide' then your listings would automatically appear on the US site as well but now people using eBay US have to manually click 'worldwide' to see listings other than just US ones. Seems simple enough to hit one button to see listings from around the world but there will be huge numbers of people who don't.

3. They've also lost a lot of sellers, myself included. At the same time as US visibility was reduced fees tripled. Sell through eBay and get paid by paypal generally means you lose 13-14% of the selling price in fees! I do still use it but now only to sell pressings and reissues and also UK 45s...for some reason eBay seems to be the place to get the best price on these sorts of records. I might start listing some of the obscure/unknown stuff I have in the New Year but if I do I'll list it on eBay USA.

All of which means that fewer buyers have a smaller range of things to bid on....hence sellers protecting themselves by using BINs/reserves/high start prices and it's a downward spiral as more buyers are driven away because there no longer seem to be the quantity/quality of auction items where you stand the chance of grabbing a bargain and it's the getting a bargain that most of us go to eBay for isn't it??

The US site doesn't seem to have quite the same problems although the BINs/reserves etc do seem to be increasing there as well they still have a large number of low start price auctions and it's these that generally attract interest from buyers.

I think it's because of the new layout (ebay.com has a new layout, don't know if it's happened to .uk too). I noticed the search option has changed too, can't get my head round it yet, so I still always use the 'opt out'-fuction, so I can go back to old layout.

Maybe it's because store inventory items are not excluded with your highest first-filter...

Ebay has fecked up big time increasing fees just as the recession began to kick in.

As for the amount of high priced b.i.n's probably people who paid top dollar for the records desperately trying to get there money back and unwilling to risk an auction?

Personally sell through Discogs.com (not soul records but other types of music) no listing fees and the comission when the item sells 5%.

yes i agree too. ive stopped going on there for vinyl yonks ago, because half the time, even if you type in exactly what you want its not there. i had a quick look now and there are tonnes of buy it nows that are reissues.

I must admit to thinking the same myself only the other day. I got divorced 5 years ago and as a result ended up selling 2/3rds of my collection. I'd promised myself that once things got sorted I'd get some/all of them back. I sold 3/4rs of them on ebay and got what I thought, were a few decent prices for them. However, I look now, and either they aren't there (fair enough, I expect that might be the case) or they are just ridiculous prices. Mostly Buy It Now or starting prices nearly twice as much as I got for mine.

Alder Ray would be the prime example, I got £30 for a mint copy, the only one I can find now is $199.99 (£130 odd depending on the state of the pound). Similar with Teddy Randazzo, sold a mint dj for £65 and the only one available is $175.00 (nearly £120).

Most of the prices appear to be prohibitive, as if they maybe don't want to sell. I can sympathise a little with that as I know how it feels to let a Timi Yuro go, regardless of price. Sometimes though, life's priorities change for some of us.

Having browsed through a few sellers items, particularly those that have high BIN prices, it reminds me of looking through a gallery. All wonderfully presented, one in particular that you just drool over. Perhaps that's it, maybe ebay's become a showroom for those that have these wonderous collections.

Another thought, if you have a shop, Buy It Now shop items cost a lot less to put up.

Maybe I'll stick to Refosoul and my MP3's.

Originally listing fees were high but you could relist over and over and over. This relisting was then changed to 1 relist.

At one time there was no 99p listing fee as the lowest fee was for 4.99 SP. Sellers were pleased when to list a 99p item was only 10p but very soon that became 15p.

At one time you could pay by nochex (or summat like that) aswell as some other transfer. What happened to them? I hazard a guess that ebay bought paypal and outlawed other methods?

Then one day the listing fees were reduced to 5p and 10p in a large number of categories which pleased sellers. What didn't please them was that FVF were increased.

At one time sellers accepting paypal would add the fee to their postage costs but ebay banned that.

At some point you could list 3 featured items for £10. This vanished.

Turbo lister became packed with new features and pretty much required downloading the new info once a week and that probably caused TL to suffer more breakdowns in operation.

Then in a moment of madness and in very short time period ebay did several things:

Introduced a seller rating.

Sellers had to register as business or private.

Changed feedback system. Which allows non paying buyers to leave negatives

Changed search.

Made paypal compulsory for sellers as an option.

Removed featured items from the first page of a category of product.

Put a surcharge fee on a 10 day auction

Increased fees.

Reduced listing fees for BIN.

And continued to ignore customer problems.

Of these changes just one was of any benefit to sellers and only the search change has been universally useless.

Nowadays there are a lot of buyers claiming non arrival of goods.

Is it any wonder that ebay is now in the mess its in and many sellers having left.

Intersting stuff and have say spot on, they have fecked up big time and know it, but it don't matter how much we moan about it they are the biggest at what they do and until someone else comes along on the same lines then no one else can touch them.

They sent me a questionaire recently and I slayed them for 90% of the above rip offs, doubt it will make much difference tho

You could say that is the case since i have wanted to sell CD's and the odd few records on Ebay and only ever sold 1 CD in like 20 listnings lol

most of my soul records i was selling was stuff like 1-23 Len Barry maybe not to someone's liking aswell as Goodbye Nothing to Say on Pye. But where else would i sell if no one wants them online will anyone want them
