Sad to report that J20 in Lutterworth will not be continuing next year. We tried, and I think suceeded, in playing something different along side the in-demanders.

A big thank you to all the people who made it to one of our nights. A very special thank you to the guest DJs who joined Shaun Barrett and myself ( Sean Chapman, Ginger Taylor, Karl Boddington, Len Dopson, Eddy Edmondon, Barry Cooper, Mark Lester, John Fisher and Rob Kay)

At the end of the day it's about economics, a great room, but to expensive for the numbers we were getting through the door.

I'm really sorry to hear this Pat I only went to the last two J20s but it was an absolute breath of fresh air for me. It's a massive shame that nights like this cannot thrive thesedays and to be honest it's a big indictment of the whole scene that truly upfront nights like this, where DJs will play literally anything and for once (and as it bloody well should be in my opinion) the onus is on the punters and the dancefloor to take a bit of a risk, can't get the numbers in.

You and Shaun deserve to succeed if you try it again elsewhere and i for one will be there. You can count on it.

Don't want to start another oldies/newies debate but is this standard now where venue's that are playing up front and new stuff simply cannot get bodies in the door?.

I'm sure there ARE places that get numbers in around the country....but have the oldies brigade won?

Real sorry to hear about this Pat, really had a great time when I came over, super music and super people, but I'm sure you'll find somewhere else, when you do please let us know, the scene needs this type of music to be played.

sorry to hear of a venue finishing but your conclusion is wrong ,the punters rule supreme and if you cant get them in ask why. its no good playin cool rare underplayed sounds if nobody wants to hear them . we are all supposedly adults and make adult choices, if we dont like the music we wont go back .word gets around. exclusive is alright for the few.

It's a real shame that you've decided to call it a day at J20 but as I've said to Pat previously on email I understand the reasons why. It's just a real shame that a quality venue playing some quality music can't get enough people through the door .

Hope your plans for the future come good and as Matt said you can count on my support for anything you decide to do.

You don't think dancers should take a risk and dance to things they haven't heard before? This scene is dead on it's feet if that's true.

You're right that we are all allowed to make our own choices, but what ever happened to seeking out venues that play new sounds and something different or something new to our ears? That's why i went to J20, that's why i go to Middleton and other places. I'm a punter and a dancer and i like to hear a wide variety, especially new things. If we just play things to fill the floor then we may as well all pack up now. On another thread several big tunes were mentioned that cleared the floor at Stafford and other places, Tony Galla for one, those DJs didn't 'play to the floor' they expected a bit of backbone from the dancers, something sadly lacking thesedays.

BTW J20 wasn't 'exclusive' or playing dog rare sounds, it was pure quality plain and simple, take a look at the playlists from the last one on Lookbacks. It's just a shame that the majority on the scene won't move out of the comfort zone. In my very honest opinion. Their choice and their loss.

Any way i don't want to use Pat's thread to argue about this, i've said it a thousand times.

Pat so sorry to hear this , we that dont fit the mainstream are facing an ever increasing struggle to continue with our promotions ,we must all try to band together in some way and make sure all the great events such as yours are not lost forever.

Who said this venue was exclusive???? It played a blend of classic oldies, upfront 60s, classic 70s, upfront 70s and modern soul. I could accept your comments if you had made the effort to actually attend this venue or any of the other 'upfront' venues but I'm guessing you never do.....happy hearing the same sounds that you heard as a kid?? Yet those venues you attended all those years ago were constantly playing 'new and upfront' sounds and people accepted them with an open mind. So why cannot you not have an open mind to new sounds now??

I'm gutted too, the last one was the first we'd got to due to clashes and had such a great time we were determined to get along again, and with a full bus.

Only 8 miles for a good night out.

Is it not worth giving it a bit longer to get established, it took 3 years of running Rugby before we started to break even but defo worth it...

have heard most of the djs that were thanked for their spots there and cant argue good knowledgeable folk. over the past 10 years I have attended many different events at differing venues; maybe its an age thing ,find I am less willing to travel far and wide when I have a plethora of what I consider decent events every fiday and saturday on my own doorstep .the point being for me imho when I have made the effort. end up feeling disappointed by whats been on offer.

We developed a great relationship with the club and they would welcome us back with open arms, but the room hire was expensive and they could not reduce it. I calculated my losses and they could not be sustained.

One well respected contributor on this thread offered to come in, but I could not find another willing soul to share the costs. I dont mind lossing but it has to be within limits. Anyone out there??????

well said both myself and wife love oldies but will always try a venue which playes dare i say newies to us and if we like what we hear then we will return if not then we keep away.

Just think on how many levels this post would be fustrating to Pat & Shaun and to those of us that travelled to support them.

8 miles away there's a bus load of people waiting for you to check out a great venue before they commit themselves to trying it. Was this the same bus load that would've gone to Soul Republic if they hadn't shut that down as well.

There are so many competing demands on the scene that we can't all get to what we would like to. As Steve Jay said in his post on this thread we all need to talk about events that are upfront so that we get maximumise numbers and dont clash.

I am not going to get into any discussion about oldies v upfront because I love all soul music and will be enjoying my full on Northern spots next year.

I dont know if its a regional thing or not but middleton is fairly upfront even in the main room [soulsam john weston etc] if thats the right expression, we have over 500 every niter and clashed with over 30 events on the last 3 niters we have held.I honestly belive the only way forward is multiple rooms,other than it is smaller 50ish clubs that will thrive as they wont need large nos to pay the overheads.It is extremley sad when good clubs that people have genuinley worked hard at close,best of luck in the future .
