ok. there are 'the tonettes' on volt ("please don't go/no tears" and "stolen angel/teardrop sea") and 'gloria scott and the tonettes' on WB ("I taught him" parts 1 and 2) and i just bought (on a whim) a Modern single by 'the Tonettes' ("tonight you belong to me"). i have never heard that one (and haven't received it in the mail yet - but the ad described it as 'girl group'). i also have a song on a comp called 'my heart can feel the pain' by the 'Tonettes'.

are all these groups the same? or related? 'soulfulkindamusic' says that the volt 'tonettes' became the 'charmels' ('loving material') but they don't mention gloria scott or the Modern single. anyone know? thanks!

oh yeah! i forgot there is a girl group from texas called the tonettes (recorded 'gee baby' on the "Ty-Tex" label) - they seem to be earlier and weird - like rockabilly/girl group/doo wop. i assume they are a totally different bunch. who knows!?!?

the tonettes on volt are the same group as the charmels, they are oscar toney's sisters.

'my heart can feel the pain' is a different group from san antonio, that came out on the dynamic label.

i doubt there is any connection to gloria scott and the tonettes with either of these two groups.

The Tonettes on Modern became the Sweethearts on Modern and Kent. I haven't heard them as the Tonettes so perhaps you could put up a scan and something in Refosoul when it turns up. Was Gloria Scott LA too, if so they're probably the same.

Actually don't bother, it's bloody awful - it's a pop cover of the Patience and Prudence hit. They don't sound remotely like the Sweethearts on it...

Gloria Scott, pretty sure she was LA. Her recordings produced by Barry White, and the label Casblanca has an LA address on her LP.

the gloria scott and the tonettes 45 is much earlier than the barry white production, though. I think it is from California because it looks like it's written by Sly Stone, writing credits are "stewart" and it says a sly production on the record. So maybe Gloria Scott and the Tonettes are connected to the modern group who are connected to the sweethearts?

There's another Tonetts group that did a 45 as Jackie and The Tonetts on D-Town/Wheel City, so I guess that's yet another different group with the same name. Anyone still keeping count of how much Tonetts there are

There's a Jamaican Tonettes as well (obviously!) I might be wrong but I think that they're in some way connected to the Webber Sisters/Ebony Sisters.

Their "I'll Give It To You" on Coxsone is a delightful Jamaican girl group record, and an excellent piece of Rocksteady.

Dead right, but This Couldn't Be Me and No More Tears was originally recorded as by the Tonettes and then issued as by the Sweethearts, same recordings.

Those Tonettes groups are almost certainly not the same. The Tonettes who did the fun tune 'Oh! What a Baby' on Doe (and also ABC Paramount) in early 1958 are from Bronx, NY. They were formerly the Clairmonts, as 2 of them were sisters who lived on Clairmont Ave. They were Diana Sanchez (lead), Josephine Allen, and Sylvia Sanchez:

The Tonettes who did that very first 1962 release on Volt 101 recorded at Stax Studios, Memphis. They changed their name to the Dixiebelles (of "Down at Papa Joe's" fame) and then, after personnel changes, morphed into the Charmels. Only pic I could find shows 2 (of porbably 3) who were in the Volt Tonettes group at a recording session, Mary Hunt and Mildred Pratchett:

While I hope this clears things up a little, it bothers me that the Tonettes AKA Dixiebelles first release was "No Tears" and its intro has the lyrics 'No more tears...' on the one hand. And on the other hand we have the Tonettes AKA Sweethearts with "No More Tears" which I'm not familliar with, so only guessing is a different tune and group, right?
