  1. Jamie and Rich (Soulsville International Playboys) are pleased to announce a new venue and a new chapter for the 'Soulsville' night in Leeds starting on Friday 24 February We're staying in Leeds City Centre and moving to the recently refurbished 'Northern Light' Club on Cross York Street, Leeds, LS2 7EE. We've got the 'Velvet' Bar situated downstairs in this 3 room venue. It's a converted Methodist School Building with plenty of character. Room holds 250, though we reckon 150 would leave plenty of room for a bit of a boogie. In the summer there are sliding doors which open out into an enclosed courtyard with seating areas. Cloakroom available on entrance. Areas will be provided for record dealers. Just contact us to reserve a table. We're negotiating Beer promotions at the moment, and our aim is to have certain bottled beers/spirits for £2.00. The bar doesn't have draught beers, and specialise in a wide range of imported bottled beers and spirits. Times are gonna be 8:00pm - 3:00am. This venue has a music license until 6:00am, so there's plenty of scope for bigger events once the venue is established. Cost on the door is £4.00 before 9:00pm and £5.00 after. Access is good off the motorways, and is bang facing Leeds Central Bus/Coach Station. Plenty of well-lit street parking just around the corner near Leeds Parrish [sic] Church (See Map Link) I've been told by the club owner (Who's building a load of apartments on the site next door) that parking will be available later in the year in the multi-storey car-park opposite (currently closes at 11pm) There's also plenty of Holiday/Premier/Travel Taverns lodges etc. within walking distance. The Train station is just over a 5 minute walk. >>Link To Northern Light Map<< Music policy is going to be a little bit of everything, with a slight leaning towards the different. People who've been to Soulsville before will know what to expect! Residents vinyl types as previous: Jamie Hartford, Rich Buckley, Pat Brady and John Parker. We're really gonna strive to get the best guests available from all the 4 corners of the UK and the continent. There's gonna be some surprises, and this really should put Leeds back on the Rare Soul map; where it deserves to be! We've got the best minds available working on our artwork and flyers, and these should be available in the very near future. For all those people who attended 'Soulsville' at The Baby Jupiter, we thank you for you support, and hopefully we can carry on the superb tight-knit atmosphere that the place generated. We do look forward to seeing you in our new home! For info contact: Jamie Hartford 07739 917972 email: soulsville06@btinternet.com Rich Buckley 07799 846629 email: richard.buckley@granadamedia.com

  4. The Ultimate Guide to Motown (and related) recordings, 1956 - 1972 Online now fith edition of this great online motown resource Don't Forget The Motor City - The 5th edition online now!! This is the fifth edition of Don't Forget The Motor City, and the second to appear online. As well as taking the story on to cover recordings up to the end of 1972, when Motown left Detroit, this edition incorporates most of the significant CD releases since the last update. And numerous corrections have been made, although doubtless many errors remain unamended. INTRODUCTION : Keith Hughes Don't Forget The Motor City - 5th edition This is the fifth edition of Don't Forget The Motor City, and the second to appear online. As well as taking the story on to cover recordings up to the end of 1972, when Motown left Detroit, this edition incorporates most of the significant CD releases since the last update. And numerous corrections have been made, although doubtless many errors remain unamended. Songs This listing contains all titles published by Jobete up to the end of 1972 for which recordings have appeared on vinyl or CD. In addition, it contains all titles known to have been recorded for any of the following labels (including unreleased recordings), before the end of 1972, and that are not published by Jobete: Tamla, Motown, Gordy, VIP, Soul, Miracle, Melody, Workshop Jazz, Divinity, Rare Earth, Mowest, Anna, Vega, Checkmate, Harvey, HPC, Message, Tri-Phi, Ric-Tic, Golden World, and Wingate It also contains all titles that were written by, or had recordings produced or arranged by, Berry Gordy Jr, not included above, before the end of 1972. Recordings For each song, all known US recordings up until the end of 1972 are shown. Where the first known recording of a song was not until 1973 or later, this recording only is shown. Releases For each recording, all known US releases, up until the end of 1972, are shown. Where the first release of a recording was not until 1973 or later, this release only is shown. Where the only known release of a recording was outside the US, this release is shown. A large number of CD releases also appear, but not all. Song titles Where the song appears in the Jobete Catalog, the title appears here as it does in the Catalog. Correct titles of non-Jobete songs are derived where possible from independent sources such as BMI and ASCAP. A particular problem is posed by recordings known only from acetate labels, or discographies: in some cases, a guess has been made about the identity of a particular title, and future research, or release of the material in question, may prove these guesses wrong. Song writers Much standardisation has taken place: in general, a writer's first and last names are shown, in the most commonly known form (e.g. Eddie Holland for Edward J. Holland Jr); combination names (e.g. Brianbert, Janard) are expanded to full names; other aliases are in general preserved. Names of writers are taken from the Jobete Catalog where possible. For non-Jobete titles, the writers shown are derived where possible from independent sources such as BMI and ASCAP. Publishers Two publishers separated by comma (e.g. Jobete,Jansumar) indicate shared publishing rights. Two publishers separated by slashes (e.g. Birdsong/Jobete) indicate publishing rights acquired by the second publisher from the first. The publishers listed are the publishers of the title at the time; no attempt is made to indicate who owns the titles now. Versions Different versions of the same song by the same artist are listed only when there are significant audible differences, usually due to different recordings (takes) being used, or to substantially different track durations, or to the use of overdubbing. Stereo/mono mixes have not normally been treated as different versions. Where it has not been possible to listen to a recording, a guess has sometimes been made about whether it is the same as or different from other known recordings of the song by the artist in question: future research or release of the material in question may prove these guesses wrong. Producers Standardisation of names as for writers. Wherever possible, producers listed on single-play records have been preferred to those listed on albums, as the latter are not always accurate. Some producers (or chief producers) have been inferred from master numbers where they are otherwise unknown (this is usually possible with Motown master numbers from August 1964 on). Arrangers Standardisation of names as for writers. Accompanists Standardisation of names as for writers. Additional information has been acquired from a variety of sources (including listening to the recordings). Type of release Where records with a particular catalogue number are known to have been pressed, a date is shown in front of the catalogue number. (There is no indication whether commercial copies were pressed.) Where it is thought no copies were pressed, "Scheduled" is used in place of the date. "Acetate" details have been derived where possible from studying copies of the labels, and listening to tape copies of the records. Some "bootleg" records are also shown: their presence in the listing does not mean that the author condones bootlegging, or can supply any information about the availability of these records. Details of "Unissued" recordings have been collected from a variety of sources, some published and some private, and checked wherever possible. Release dates Where possible, dates of release have been taken from information supplied by Motown, e.g. on album/CD liner notes. Otherwise dates have been taken from published discographies; where these disagree, a "best guess" has been taken. Recording dates Again where possible, recording dates have been taken from information supplied by Motown, again mainly on album/CD liner notes. Link
  5. A New Album Release from Bobby Hebb Not really fresh as been out for two months or so, but worth a check out especially the cover of Lou Rawls "When love goes wrong" which is available to download complete from the website. Going by the other clips (includes a 2005 version of Love Love Love) does seem that this "quiet" release is worthy of more attention than so far received, and hats off to the record company for making not only the mp3 avaiable but a great selection of photos and download able reading. A new release (oct 2005) from Tution records from Bobby Hebb Check out the web site (link below) for what has to be said is a outstanding example of how to release a album nowadays, informative, photos and the such to download and a offical release in full of one of the tracks, a great version of Lou Rawls - When love goes wrong" Around the year 1962 Bobby Hebb recorded a single with Sylvia Robinson entitled "I Wanna Know", pressed under the duo moniker of "Bobby & Sylvia". Though there are literally over one hundred songs with that name, this one, was quite special, with the name, if not the sentiment, tucked inside the title of Bobby Hebb's third commercially released album, and pressed four decades after that 45 RPM. "That's All I Wanna Know" is the title of this long-awaited new album, "There's a big difference between want and need; (there are) quite a few things we need that we aren't aware of, disguised as things that we want. Things we need we are usually able to receive, but we don't always get everything we want." Bobby Hebb This album's title is a variation of the James Carr / Roosevelt Jamison track, "That’s What I Want To Know", and it is amazing and must be repeated that this is only the third album released (so far) by the "song a day man", a man who has written scores of tunes, Bobby Hebb. It's not that Bobby doesn't have lots of albums in the vaults - he taped a full project in 2002 with his friend Bernard "Pretty" Purdie, tracked an orchestrated collection of tunes in the early 1980s, put together another album in the late 1970s at Fleetwood Recording in Revere, Massachusetts, and has publishing demos galore as well as enough very strong material in the Philips vaults to release the legitimate follow-up to the "Sunny" album. But tuition's release of "That's All I Wanna Know" in late 2005 is the first commercial release by Bobby Hebb since James Flemming Rasmussen produced "Love Games" for Epic Records in 1970, 35 years before the consumer could purchase a new collection of material by the man who wrote and sang "Sunny". Rüdiger Ladwig, who had released two volumes of "Sunny" cover versions on the Trocadero label, conceived this 13 song disc after he first met the artist during Bobby Hebb's June 2002 tour of Germany. "I had the idea doing an album when Bobby played "Cold Cold Night" live at Radio 1in Berlin while promoting "A Collection of Various Interpretations Of Sunny, Part 2", Rüdiger noted. Ladwig´s general idea for this music, recorded in March of 2003 just as the Iraq war began, was to re-record earlier Bobby Hebb material, track the first ever "duet" of "Sunny" by the original artist, and follow Bobby's musical paths. From "Proud Woman", the Fred Burch/Skip Gibbs tune that Johnny Adams put on disc, to Hank Williams "Cold Cold Heart", which was in the repertoire of Roy Acuff, the man a thirteen year old Bobby Hebb toured with in the early 1950s, "That's All I Wanna Know“, is an audio journey touching various aspects of this legendary performer's career. "Cold Cold Night" was written by Bobby and Phil Medley. Phil is most famous for "A Million To One", the hit for Jimmy Charles and Donny Osmond, as well as "Twist &Shout" (Shaking Up Baby...), which charted by The Isley Brothers in 1962 and The Beatles in 1964. This is the first time the Phil Medley/Bobby Hebb collaboration has ever been put on an album! Since Lou Rawls won a Grammy with Bobby Hebb and Sandy Baron's classic, "A Natural Man", Hebb wanted to return the favour - so Bobby performs a Lou Rawls staple, "When Love Goes Wrong", in this collection. Song selection runs the gamut - contemporary music like "Willow Tree" (from the catalogue of Philadelphia's G. Love &Special Sauce) to the tried and true - a cover of Richard Shann's "Don't Tear Me Down", made famous by Charlie Rich. "That's All I Wanna Know" also gives the world updates on Hebb's other chart recordings starting with a very funky reworking of "A Satisfied Mind", the song Roy Acuff loved to play. Joe "Red" Hayes/Jack Rhodes composed this popular title which hit for Porter Wagoner in 1955 and broke the Top 40 in America for Bobby in November of 1966. Also re-cut for this disc is the 1972 sleeper hit in the U.K., the fantastic "Love, Love, Love", composed by "Sunny" arranger Joe Renzetti and producer Jerry Ross. The Northern Soul classic charted in the U.K. six years after it was initially released. A surprise bonus is a re-make of Darryl Carter's "Bound By Love", a Philips 45 that came after "Sunny", but has yet to be on any album. This third full-length commercial release from Bobby Hebb also has the songwriter/interpreter playing with a new set of musicians, their names available in the credits, which gives the album a uniqueness and special vitality. Bobby discussed these new recordings on August 1, 2005, stating: "My studies of life are basically represented here through different episodes - there are songs like these songs that help us to understand each other." check the website out http://www.bobbyhebb.com

  9. Following recent ups and downs in the promoters of the soul nights in Weston super mare and the fall of attendances in the past year or so, it was with a certain amount of nervous anticipation that I arrived at The Grand Atlantic Hotel in Weston. As I walked in I was met by the ever-genial smiles of co-promoters of Merve (Tin Tin) Parnell and Mick Lloyd also two of the resident DJ'S who were joined by two former Heavenly Blocked DJ's Ken Dunn and Mark Thomas who was unfortunately unable to attend due to illness (Hope you get better soon mate). The evening started well with around fifty people already in attendance when I arrived at about 8:30 and with Jason (Mr Motown) Bessant on the decks this promised to be a great evening and all-nighter we were not to be disappointed. The...great mix of tunes from across the decades ... DJ line up was a fine mixture of local and national jocks consisting of The great previously mentioned Jason Bessant, Carl Bodey, Merv, Ken Dunn, Pete Lister, Derek Mead, Mace, Des Parker and of course Mick Lloyd. Whist knowing these DJ's quite well I must admit to expecting an overdose of R"n"B,However I was to be pleasantly surprised with a great mix of tunes from across the decades consisting of northern standards and true rarities, current floor fillers and R"n"B monsters, Motown marvels and sixties club soul crossover and modern. All the jocks blended well together and complementing each others sets with some amazing collections being aired but the choice record of the night for me was the Chevrons - Love I love you played by Merve (Fantastic!!!). Many thanks must go out to those who travelled at this time of year with such a choice of venues up and down the country these days. With an...punters and promoters who together have provided a great soul venue in the south west...attendance of nearly 200 dancers and soul fans this can only be positive for the future of soul in the south and the credit must go to the punters and promoters who together have provided a great soul venue in the south west to complement the Torquay, Bridgwater and Exeter venues and long may they continue. May I wish you all my thanks and congratulations on a superb night with so many friendly faces. "I'm Your Pimp" is presented here in the fast-rolling original mix -- a mad mix of snapping drums, sliding strings, and super dope lyrics that have made the tune a memorable funk track for years! The "Snapped" track is presented here in a remix version -- one that cuts up the track heavily and brings up the funky bottom -- almost hitting an older level of Norman Cook mixing from the late 80s!" -DUSTY GROOVE. 19. Dreamgirls - due for a late 2006 release Just news that work is due to start on production of a cinema version of Dreamgirls which is due for release in December 2006. Appears its quite a major project as the line up includes Jamie Foxx, Beyonce Knowles, Danny Glover and Eddie Murphy shows. Its a film adaption of the 80s musical which told the story of the rise of a trio of women: Effie (Hudson), Deena (BeyoncÃÆ’©) and Lorrell (Anika Noni Rose), who have formed a promising girl group called The Dreamettes in the 1960s At a talent competition, they are discovered by an ambitious manager named Curtis Taylor, Jr. (Foxx), who offers them the opportunity of a lifetime: to become the back-up singers for headliner James "Thunder" Early (Murphy). Website http://www.dreamgirls.dreamworks.com/Next year, 25 years after kicking ass on Broadway, the Tony-Award winning musical DREAMGIRLS will be coming to the big screen starring Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy, Danny Glover, Beyonce Knowles and a number of newly added cast members, including Jennifer Hudson, a former "American Idol" finalist, and Keith Robinson, set to play the composer role of C.C., a role which had previously been rumored to be given to Usher. The film is set to begin production in January of 2006, directed and written by Bill Condon of KINSEY and GODS AND MONSTERS fame and will be about: Set in the turbulent late 1960s and early '70s, DREAMGIRLS follows the rise of a trio of women: Effie (Hudson), Deena (BeyoncÃÆ’©) and Lorrell (Anika Noni Rose), who have formed a promising girl group called The Dreamettes. At a talent competition, they are discovered by an ambitious manager named Curtis Taylor, Jr. (Foxx), who offers them the opportunity of a lifetime: to become the back-up singers for headliner James "Thunder" Early (Murphy). Curtis gradually takes control of the girls' look and sound, eventually giving them their own shot in the spotlight as The Dreams. That spotlight, however, begins to narrow in on Deena, finally pushing the less attractive Effie out altogether. Though the Dreams become a cross-over phenomenon, they soon realize that the cost of fame and fortune may be higher than they ever imagined.
  20. Due to licence c**k-up there will be no alcohol @ Family Tree on Saturday. However, you are more than welcome to bring your own. Rest assured the tunes &atmosphere will still be of the highest quality. Hey it's a party - bring your own " moonshine" &enjoy yourself. The alternative was to cancel but us Soulful dancers are made of sterner stuff than that.

  25. The main aim saturday daytime was to get up to Richard and Regs(Sharron) wedding do at Soul Or Nothing in Manchester in the afternoon, and then move onto Amlwch Nighter later on in night. Unfortunatly a recent mot result has sort of affected travel plans for the near future, so plan was to get a hire car to do the couple of 100 miles journey. However when tried to put plan into action, a few major problems popped up ! Which meant that any thoughts of getting to Manchester had to be scrapped. Unlike Manchester, there was a fair chance of scrounging a lift to Amlwch, and after a few calls, and thanks to Paul O, managed to get meself onto the Isle of Anglesey. This was the second nighter at this venue, the first one was a couple of months ago and did show there was a lot of potential for this event. For this one, the team Steve and co had teamed up with New Century Soul Club for a one off joint promotion of this November Nighter, and along with a bit of tweaking, and a step up of promoting. On the night the forecast blizards threat had faded away, signs and better directions (and the new soul source venue guide!) had avoided the treasure hunt rally touch of the first one, and come 12 oclock was a good crowd in and a good buzz building up, as the night progressed so did the buzz and feel of event, floor was busy through out night, sounds wise, have to say one of best varied mix heard at a nighter for a fair old while, long distance guest djs did the business and all I asked said enjoyed dishing out to an apreciative crowd. Rest of usual homeland suspects dj-ing pushed out some on the ball sets, each with own individual style and taste. Peoplewise, saw many returning who were at the first one, lots of travellers and of course loads of locals, localish lad meself so lots of catch ups, sort outs and all that sort of thing going on, spotted a fair few online soul source types, all up to no good . Sales wise Roger B and Des P brought boxes galore of vinyl, and were a fair few of indivudal boxes knocking around, with some interesting sales. Sounds wise, as said imo one of the best mix nighter sounds heard for a fair while, was a right old mix of current, interesting revivals and the odd suprise, crowd and djs clicked, lots of highlights on the night, added a few hasty comments below Jimbo + Richard 9.00 Till 9.50 Johnny Chick Chick Jones 9.50 till 10.30 John Elias 10.30 To 11.10 posted plays in forum, Sue Perrin, Derc Hotzog, Four Pros Chico 11.10 Till11.45 Richie Andrews 11.45 Till 12.30 posted plays in forum, likes of Oracles, Johnny Vanelli Masquaders Phil Blacknell 12.30 Till 1.15 Ujimaji (can't say it never mind spell it) George Jackson - I dont have.., Topics booking up - just 3 off cuff highlights Des Parker 1.15 Till 2.15 Great set, Joe Vandiver "you fooled me" , Royale 5s Cobra 45, Gary sole, Zu Zu man, were just some of many Roger Banks 2.15 Till 3.15 Another a55 expressway trip for Roger and all need to say The Kinnettes Mark Speakman 3.15 Till 4.00 Margaret Little, Spartans to name just two Karl Rhodes 4.00 Till 5.00 another almost local lad, good buzz on his latest cover - trying to get a sound clip sorted for site, was joined by another Carl,,both pushing out double the dose, likes of scott bros etc John Dunne 5.00 Till 6.00 Paul Davies 6.00 Till 6.45 Two guests from Ireland, fresh from Caergwele nite pushed out two top sets before jumping on ferry Rob Lloyd 6.45 Till 7.30 All the way from Wrexham escorting John and Paul to ferry and gave out a great mixed set 7.30 Till 9 Mike Hughes &Steve Thomas a "3 and in" mess about to finish nighter, Steve's nomads cover has its own fan club, "va va voom" is back on the agenda after micky c's non-stop hassling ..........and that was that 12 hour nighter 101 djs, hats off to the promoting team for pulling off this one, Steve Thomas, Jimbo, Richard and Chris W NCS, for putting it together. Know a lot of work has been put in both nighters and nothing makes you more aware of the risk that such events face, than Steve recieving the extreme blizzard warnings earlier in the week, luckily the chances of them faded away but just shows you how risky this game is. trivia chico doing the one trainer thing after breaking ankle stage diving at recent paynes revival - mark b revisted Rob L passed on Caergwele night was a good one Karl said Soul Or Nothing was kicking Was right in forum on the correct way of saying Amlwch, its not like the scottish loch, the w is the key, straight from the locals mouth! (Just call me fluent in many toungues mike)) Maybe some photos and more plays later Got to say that overall this was one of best nighters I have been to for a fair old while, mix of djs attitude, the people and their reaction, sort of local 40 miles from house, 9-9am, overall feel and vibe, mix and range of sounds dished out, all made it most enjoyable and very refreshing! thanks to paul o again for save the day lifts there and back more north wales going ons next weekend sees Bangor and Wxm soul nitghts and watch out for this Monkey Xmas Spectacular two full roomer, scary bar extension friday 16 Dec more info in event guide and dmsc section
