  8. Unsung (Documentary) - The O'Jays The O’Jays are an amazing case study in survival, both in the music business and in life. Formed in 1958 in Cleveland, Ohio, as the Triumphs, and later re-naming themselves after popular local disc jockey Eddie O’Jay, the group has endured in one form or another for five decades, always anchored by the instantly recognizable voices of Eddie Levert and Walter Williams. Following several minor hits in the 1960s (such as "Lipstick Traces") the group struck gold in the 1970s with the great Philadelphia Soul producers Gamble&Huff. The partnership produced songs that mixed romantic and social messages, like "Backstabbers," "For the Love of Money" and of course, "Love Train." But along with their artistic achievements, the individual members of the O’Jays have struggled with challenges that included Williams’ quiet, decades-long battle with multiple sclerosis, and the untimely deaths of Eddie Levert’s sons, Sean and Gerald. Still putting on a show after a half century of performing together, the O’Jays tell the inside story of their journey on Unsung. https://tvone.tv/5601/o-jays/
  9. Been passed on news and details by Color Red Music of this recent digital single release by The Burroughs The company blurb follows below along with audio... Steeped in classic soul standards and outfitted with modern flair, The Burroughs are a nine piece band with a powerhouse sound that has been electrifying audiences across Colorado and beyond. Since 2013, the band has lit up stages with their trademark brand of “Sweaty Soul Music,” quickly earning their rightful place as one of the best live bands in the region. The Burroughs - "The Slip / Forever in Love" - CRED-150 - Digital 45 Track Description: “The Slip” by The Burroughs is a deep funk groove inspired by The Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown. The band’s four-piece horn section is showcased throughout the tune in tight hits and punchy lines. The lyrics tell a tongue-in-cheek story of dodging the pressures of modern life, where everyone sometimes wishes they could “slip” out of their obligations. Johnny “RedBird” Burroughs embraces his frontman energy as a natural storyteller as his narrative is enhanced by the group’s full-bodied horn section. The Burroughs - "The Slip / Forever in Love" - Digital 45 Track Description: “Forever In Love” is a breezy summertime jam that celebrates falling in love in beautiful Colorado. The warm guitar chords and upbeat background vocals echo the ‘60’s sounds of Barbara Acklin’s “Am I The Same Girl,” while the harmony and horn lines pull influence from the hits of Stevie Wonder and The Jackson Five. The track is slated to be a staple in the Color Red catalog as “Am I The Same Girl” is one of founder/producer Eddie Roberts’ all-time favorite tunes. Toss it on any playlist that aims to harness carefree, summertime magic and enjoy the ride. Release Date: 07/23/2019 More info via https://www.color-red.co/the-burroughs

  14. Four superb 45s have just landed on the new release desk from Kent. All the details and previews follow below Chink A Chank Baby B/W That's What Love Is - September Jones - The Pied Piper Players (Pied Piper) The final September Jones track to be discovered from her amazing eight-song Pied Piper sessions is ‘Chink A Chank Baby’ – the original Detroit recording of a backing track that Doni Burdick recorded over years later as ‘Whatcha Gonna Do’. Burdick’s version went big in some rare soul venues when found in the 90s but is a shadow of September’s exhilarating outing. The flip is the backing track of the Hesitations’ ‘That’s What Love Is’, a stormer of a record the music of which was re-used for Eddie Parker’s ‘I’m Gone’ a couple of years later. Don't It Make You Feel Funky B/W I Gotta Be Free - Joe Hicks At last there is a legal re-release of Joe Hick’s all-time Northern classic ‘Don’t It Make You Feel Funky’ – a record oozing adrenalin and sounding magnificent from the original master tape. We’ve used the rare and collectable AGC label flip, ‘I Gotta Be Free’, to make the 45 too tough to refuse. Given My Life B/W A Frown On My Face - Mighty Whites / Jacqueline Jones - Kent Select The Mighty Whites’ ‘Given My Life’ is the Modern Soul hit of the last 18 months. It’s popular on the European rare soul circuit through spins by Dave Thorley, aka @Dave Thorley on the funkier end thanks to DJ Dean Rudland aka @Dean Rudland, and is a 100 Club classic in the making. The later disco version by Brotherhood comes nowhere near the quality of this earlier soulful take. It is coupled here with Jacqueline Jones’ 1974 Loadstone crossover classic ‘A Frown On My Face’ – a record that gets harder to find and more expensive by the month. Just Say A Four Letter Word B/W She's My Real Sweet Woman - California Playboys The California Playboys’ 1976 Loadstone LP has been changing hands for three-figure sums for decades. Here are the top two dance tracks that put it into that price bracket. Both are favourites of Modern Soul fans, and to have them on a handy 7-inch disc with a suitable 45 edit will make them irresistible. All out and about now and available for purchase via all the usual suspects including the Ace records home https://acerecords.co.uk/

  19. From Daptone records feed Carlton Jumel Smith - This is What Love Looks Like! (Official Video) LP/CD/Digital: http://dapt.one/CarltonJumelSmith After hitting hard in the soul circles with his deep Timmion Records debut single "I Can't Love You No More" and following it with "This Is What Love Looks Like," Carlton Jumel Smith is back at it with an album full of contemporary soul gold. The material mined here is none other than the vintage groove troves of classic 1970's r&b, something the Cold Diamond & Mink crew brews up effortlessly. The songwriting and expression by Carlton carry strong echoes of Curtom productions, Memphis soul and naturally Motown. We're talking about musical traditions he's incorporated into his expression since witnessing James Brown at the Apollo as an 8-year old.
