Looks like Ben Sherman is still pushing a 'northern soul' connection, from this years London Fashion show Presented in a 100 metre-long gallery inside Somerset House, this season’s Ben Sherman offering looked to its roots and the glories of Northern Soul with a capsule collection created in collaboration with Henry Holland – a designer recently nominated by the British Fashion Council’s Fashion Awards for Best Emerging Menswear Designer. Word just in from member Ady @ady croasdell on this years Cleethorpes 2018 Weekender... I can at last confirm that Cleethorpes 2018 on the 8-10th June will definitely go ahead. I have secured the services of two excellent veterans of the rare soul scene who are going to help me with the weekender, primarily with the live act and the running of the event over the weekend. I will continue to run the bookings and DJ. We are agreed that here is not much wrong with the event that a little bit of tweaking and a lot of carefully-aimed promotion won’t cure. Changes will be minimal but there are a couple of developments concerning the Beachcomber site which will make the event even more attractive to the regulars, new blood and hopefully returnees. We still have to iron out some specifics and it will be a month or so before the live act is announced so watch out for further news soon. Next week I will update on the new team and other relevant news. In the meantime, we are happy to take bookings for the event. We will keep the prices at the same as the last fifteen or so years. If you want to get your booking in now it’s the usual drill; Weekender passes without accommodation - £59 each or £20 deposit from Ady Croasdell Cheques payable to 6TS Weekenders 10 Hatfield House 108 Great Titchfield St London W1W 6SN To pay by PayPal it’s £61 total or £20.75 deposit to ady.croasdell@btinternet.com If you’re one of the lucky few regulars who get a caravan from us on site, it’ll be £95 each by cheque or £98.50 by PayPal; deposits same as above. The deposit stage isn’t necessary unless you want to stagger the payments. News about a most recent release (OSCD058) SOUL ON THE REAL SIDE #8 OUTTA SIGHT presents Soul On The Real Side #8. A special commemorative edition. On 30th May, 2017, Francis Terry Thomas (aka Mr Tee) sadly passed away with his family at his bedside and “It Really Hurts Me Girl”, by The Carstairs, on the stereo. He kept the faith right up until the end. I had visited him in Worcester hospital just the previous day and news of his passing was a brutal reminder of how fleeting life can be. But, Mr Tee - Terry to some - Francis to me - made the most of life. He did seize the day, he did embrace every minute. He had a fascination for and extensive knowledge of art deco architecture, he was well read and a collector of books, antiques, objects d’art and popular culture. He was an active member of the local business community and a familiar figure in ALL of the charity shops where he displayed an uncanny Lovejoy-like knack for sniffing out a bargain! Compiled here are just a few of the hundreds of songs earmarked for future Real Side compilations. Francis was particularly passionate about Nina Simone’s “Touching And Caring”, Salena Jones’ jazzy take on “Am I The Same Girl” and Sandra Wright’s magnificent “Midnight Affair” and “I Come Running Back”, forcing me to break with tradition and feature two songs by the same artist! Other favourite artists included here are Eugene Record, Sam Dees, Linda Jones and Major Lance. Francis was also keen to showcase an unreleased song sent to us earlier this year - “Standing Room Only” (trk 13) - a demo that had originally been intended for Ralph Carter. The final song on the set, by the Chairman Of The Board, was played at his funeral as we bid him farewell. I hope that I’ve done you proud my friend. On John Bowie, I am the sole owner of 'Chante Records' and I am planning to re-release it back on the Chante Lable again for distribution. The original songs written by Santo Minghenelli titled: 'I Never Felt So Lonely' & 'A Fool I Would Be' that are still streaming since 2003. I am trying to locate a family member of John to apply any past royalties (should they be collected) or future royalties to be collected on the re-release to them. thanks for passing on Mike have upped this forum post to a news item Found some interesting info via Anthony Reichardt on this youtube clip In the early 1960's Betty began singing at various clubs in Santa Ana, California and throughout Orange County. In 1962, she recorded a duet with Ray Lockhart as Betty & Ray on Rendezvous Records entitled 'You're Too Much' and followed it up with a solo single entitled, 'Take Your Heart' also in 1962 and also two singles with the label as the lead vocalist of a studio group of singers credited as the INSTANTS. She occasionally sang with Santa Ana, neighbor, Bill Medley (who eventually became the lower voice of The Righteous Brothers) at various local clubs. While The Righteous Brothers were signed to Moonglow records, Betty and Bill Medley recorded a duet with one of Bill's songs entitled, 'My Tears Will Go Away' which was never released. Betty eventually hooked up with Wrecking Crew pianist, Leon Russell who would produce her next record on the Philles Records subsidiary, Phi-Dan. Betty remembered rehearsing two songs with Leon at his home before they were recorded in 1965 at Hollywood's Gold Star Studio. The tunes were a song written by country & western artist, Buck Owens entitled 'Act Naturally' which would be issued as Betty's debut Phi-Dan single release and the often recorded, 'If I Had A Hammer' which was planned as a follow-up but ultimately was never released as a single. Betty remembered arriving at the recording date and being in awe at seeing all of the musicians including a french horn. She couldn't believe that The Blossoms were singing background for her and commented on how beautiful and bright Darlene Love's smile was. Just as Spector was known to do, Leon included an uninspiring two minute jam session by 'The Wrecking Crew' on the B-side to 'Act Naturally' in order to discourage DJ's from splitting the airtime away from the intended plug side. While 'Act Naturally' may have been a country & western song, Betty Willis tore it apart left, right, up and down and turned it into something much more exciting. Unfortunately for Betty, The Beatles had recorded a version as well and DJ's were going to play anything by The Beatles before they played a record by some unknown singer by the name of Betty Willis. Betty recorded one final single on the Mojo label in 1967 entitled, 'Aint Gonna Do You No Good' b/w 'Gone With The Wind (Is My Love)' which had been also recorded in 1966 by Rita & The Tiaras on Dore records. The A-side of the disc was written and produced by Jackie Avery & John Farris. Both original 45's of Betty's and Rita & The Tiaras versions of the tune have exchanged hands for handsome sums of cash on internet auction sites. It has been written that Betty Willis was the voice of Rachel & the Revolvers on the rare Dot single produced by Brian Wilson which is NOT true. Betty Willis and Brian Wilson never crossed paths. It has also been claimed that Alonzo Willis of The Alley Cats and session singer and later a member of The Honey Cone, Carolyn Willis were related to Betty which are both also NOT true. Betty Willis eventually left the music business and worked many years at the U.S. Postal Service in Santa Ana California as a mail clerk before retiring. She currently lives in southern California with her daughter and grandchild.
