Soul Essence Website Updated
Soul Essence website has had a going over Main thrust is next years weekender #29 - April 8th, 9th & 10th - 2011 so there's booking forms and al that but there's also a look back at the past along with some photos, reviews etc So I finally got off my lazy backside and updated the site. The dates for Essence 28 are now set, so why not iAdd them to your iPhone using iCal and iSay iSay iSay. Essence 27 was a rip roaring success as usual, good music (very true), good beer (true), fine dining (false) and fine wines (very false). The Gouch managed an awesome lounge over the weekend (check out his top picks here), and I was to be found winding down to the music in there on Saturday afternoon before winding up again for the Saturday night. link below http://www.soul-essence.co.uk/

John Legend and the Roots - Wake Up
John Legend has teamed up with The Roots to push out a covers album with a difference - its actually quite interesting and enjoyable. The album is made up of their takes on "socially/politically conscious Soul classics from the sixties and seventies". As can see by the track listing below its quite a varied selection and is billed as being inspired by the recent US presidential elections. Highlights from here being the versions of Baby Hueys "Hard Times", the take of "Compared To What " and the title track Also includes one original track - Shine Can preview all tracks via a page on John Legends site (link below) 1. The Gathering - Northern Soul - Revisited (frontpage)
Was it really 2 years ago that C4 broadcast this short 3 minute film featuring Stevie Cato on a trip to Soul Revolution? Colin O'Toole the director of this short series of short documentary films has just posted all 4 fillms on vimeo. Seeing that the clip that was featured on Soul Source at the time was all a bit lo- fi it has to be a good excuse to revisit this tip top film and also highlight the others in this series. Have embedded the main soul related one "the gathering" below View on Vimeo. best viewed in "full screen" ( just hit the full screen button) You can view all the four films in this series via the link below and can read the full words (a clip follows below) on what the thinking and the aim was behind this series. In 2008 I directed four short documentary films for the '3 Minute Wonder' strand on Channel 4. The core theme of each film centred on the idea of a gathering, be it a religious pilgrimage, a nightclub, a protest or one mans mission to save his town. It was my mission to create these simple docs with a cinematic approach and as a reflection of how docs in the 60's and 70's even in the 1980's would have been shot on film using quality.... Can read the rest of the words and see the other films at the link below https://vimeo.com/15009347 Original article was posted in the Soul Source Article/News feature view article in its original format (c/w images etc)

Soulboy - The Movie. You've Seen It So . .
stumbled across this bit of film industry news on my travels https://uk.artsgrantsfinder.com/review/comeback-kid-will-ferrell-leaves-devil-in-the-dust-for-top-spot-in-uk-cinemas-charles-gant/ The comeback kid These days, if a film fails to catch fire on its opening weekend, it's rare for it to stick around long enough in cinemas to get a chance to bounce back. SoulBoy, the romance rooted in the 1970s Northern Soul scene of the Wigan Casino, is that rare exception. Having debuted at seven cinemas with a modest £9,000, the film played at five venues in week two. But with strong takings in the north and Midlands, SoulBoy was able to play 14 cinemas at the weekend (albeit not every day at all sites), posting its best result to date - £11,650 - with a cume to date of £43,500. From this Friday, it will play at 13 sites, including a fourth week at the Empire Wigan and a third week at the Tyneside Cinema. The film is no longer playing in London - again, unusual, since the West End typically delivers a big chunk of any arthouse film's total haul. SoulBoy stars Martin Compston, Nichola Burley and Felicity Jones.

A Word From Tyree Glenn Jr
had the below passed on via the contact us feature: Tyree Glenn Jr. "The Ambassador of Funky Rhythm and Blues"! Music to Make your "Hip....Hop"!! Hello Everybody, Please allow me to introduce myself to you!! My name is Tyree Glenn Jr. and I would like with this e-mail, to send you some "Up-Date Information" on my "Vintage R & B Show" based here in Germany for possible "Concerts" in England in the future! (www.tyree-glenn.com) I am very interested in perhaps doing a "Small Tour" in England, especially, the "Northern Soul R & B Club Scene", as I was informed, that a song that I recorded many many years ago, is being played very often in the clubs up there-"Yesterday" from Tyree Glenn Jr. As for information about myself, I am an "Afro-American Singer, Musician-Tenor Sax 🙂 , TV and Film Actor and Entertainer" originally from New York City and was very involved in the R & B Scene back in the late Fifties and Sixties. Living in Germany now, I have been performing my show, based here in the "Essen-Düsseldorf" area of Germany, throughout Europe and Internationally now for the past 30 years and I might add with the same members of my band! (By the way, my father, Tyree Glenn, was the very well known former Musical Director and World Famous Jazz Trombonist with Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway among others!) I have performed many times at the CeBit in Hannover in the past for Siemens, Nokia, Deutsche Leasing etc. and I have also performed several times in Abu Dhabi in the last few years: At the Nokia Jazz Festival in 2006 and at the European PGA Golf Tournament in 2007 for IMG and both times with much success! I have also performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland several times, the last time was on the show with my good friend, Mr. BB King! The possible formations of the "Tyree Glenn Jr. R & B Party" are mainly the "5 Piece" Group. (The 7 Piece Group + 2 Horns and the 9 Piece Group + 4 Horns are the formations that are on the Videos, the CD and the YouTube Video and are mainly for larger Events and Festivals!) A part of my show has been devoted to the music of some good friends of mine in America, the "Original Blues Brothers Band" and my good friend, Maceo Parker! I perform at many Clubs, Marketing Events, Galas and Open-Air Festivals etc. here in Germany and Internationally! I am including the link to my latest video on YouTube of my performance at the Sutter Group Gala in Essen. I hope that you will enjoy it! Here is the link to the Sutter Group Gala YouTube Video: Here is the link to the song: "Yesterday"!! (Good Old R & B from back then!! 8-) Enjoy!) To view the Breda Jazz Festival Video on my website, (www.tyree-glenn.com), please click this link and then click on "Videos" on my website. Then click on the "Tyree Glenn Jr. Breda Jazz Festival" in Holland where we performed a few years ago and where we performed once again last May. They did a very nice 21 min. video of us performing on stage !! (This video, along with others are on my website there under: Downloads/videos!!) Here is the Link to the video on my website: https://www.tyree-gle...expose&Itemid=9 Here is a link to a video on YouTube recorded last July of myself as a "Solo Special Guest" at the Riff Club in Bochum: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-qh_SrRT4A Here is also a video from the Topos Club in Leverkusen last July 18th for their 40th. Anniversary: Here is also a "Link" of myself performing on Saxophone with my band at the World Famous Peppermint Lounge, (Where the "Twist" got started!), in New York City for the Beatles, whom I got to meet later, back in 1964-(Notice the "Hairline"!! 🙂 )-on their first tour to the US!! Here is the Link to the Beatles video: I am also including some links for your "Personal Enjoyment" of my father, Tyree Glenn, who was the very well known former Musical Director and World Famous Jazz Trombonist with Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway among others. Northern Soul at Lowton - The End of an Era - Fri 10th Sept
A few years ago I found myself turning into the Lowton Civic Carpark and looking at all the cars parked on the verges I turned to a mucker and said something along the lines of "you know what, do we sometimes take these places for granted, once a month Lowton just quietly gets on with what it does, never any fuss or dramas, just does its own thing.and its there on offer when ever you want it" When I heard the news that it was closing, (have been told its due to the actual venue no longer staying open rather than anything to do with the event itself ) that question I asked came back to mind., guess I was guilty of taking it for granted, I suppose any event that is long running , any event that is regular and "always there" can and will be a sort of victim of its own success, even more so when its so good at what it does Anyway, have had many and that does means many enjoyable nights there, and here's some random memories that spring up when think back : The laughs in the broom cupboard (r&b room) down the corridor run by Pete Coulson, the time when CSC were on, the modern room, the adventures and games in the record bar, the regular rush to get to the bar before it shuts thanks to steve thomas navigation skills, the mike hump ear burning at hotel, the time we lost lowton, trevor nelson tv visit, the layout, the 3 rooms and corridors (you could f*** about all over the place, tip on high and all sorts), plus loads of other memories and laughs including the many djs that have caught there main room -12th anniversary photo Last one is this Friday Will dig out some site links to past articles, photos, videos etc and post them after the details END OF AN ERA. IT'S THE LAST LOWTON SOUL SESSION ON THE 10TH OF SEPTEMBER Due to circumstances beyond our control, this willo be the LAST EVER soul night run by the current promoters BE EARLY it will be a packer! please also note that it kicks off this month at 8.00pm not 9.00pm as usual and not the 9.00pm that is stated on the flyers. DJ's to include Steve Pownall, Jimmy Cowburn Les Harrison and Kev McCue Ian Cunliffe and Dean Mitchell Bob Hindsley and Barry Maleady Andy Dyson and Mick H Steve Thomas and Chris King and I'm sure Mr Murphy will be playing a few tunes.........if he can still see and get the decks going the right way!! Admission £6.00 Lowton Civic Hall Hesketh Meadow lane Lowton WA3 2AH 01942 672971 Hats off to Kev Murphy and everyone else who was involved over the years Clip of a Review by Denny from 1997 ...but, the best part of the trip was going to Lowton Civic. you might have read about it, it's been going for about a year and although it only runs from 8 'till 1 once a month it's Wigan in the early days all over again. it's easy the best northern club going at the moment - there must be about 1500 go. the atmosphere and the buzz is incredible. i met loads of old mates, there's no shit and it's like being smashed without gear !! you name it, they played it. steve whittle (mr m's) was the guest dj. 2 sounds which really stuck out for the way they filled the floor towards the end were barbara mcnair's "your gonna love my baby" and (I think they always play it as the last one) terry callier's "ordinary joe" - words can't describe the atmosphere. Clip of a review by that Hughes geezer 2004 With the event being a mini-niter at Lowton, the first time for a few months for me, could say were definitely in the mood for a good night, we tumbled out, boxes, flyers going all over the venue. With another 4 or 5 cars from North Wales was a fair old contingent. Got to say always enjoy Lowton, always have a laugh and a good crack, plus the dj line up as with most events attend more often than not seems to be a good one, the days of in one door to main hall, then driven straight back out by "big name" djs who think "just a little misunderstanding" is what people traveled a 100 odd miles for, doesn't seem to happen anymore.Place was packed, knew Ian Cuncliffe was on, disappointed to find out he had to do a early one, so missed out.. Popped in the modern room and it was kicking, a big crowd, good buzz, quick look for wanted new releases, quick birthday greetings to Pete known as Bangor's modern soul man , who was celebrating his 40th birthday, so one of youngest of that genre. Quick word with Roger W out and about as a punter and enjoying himself, Modern room what caught was definitely buzzing. Down corrider to R and B room, Big Mick was on and given out some quality r n b, Later noticed attendance was bit down compared to other nites.Steve T had a spot in their later on, me and Johnny J made the most of attendence as this gave us great ammo when continuing our ongoing banter battle. But fairs fair as always dished out some great selections. Main room was going strong, nice surprise to catch Soul Sam doing a set, but only caught last bit, stuff such as "If cant say anything good", a bit of 2003 gear, finished set off playing flip of Morris Chestnut which in his usual ethuastic way he just raved about. Tim Brown up next and gave out some great stuff,....Travels meant not much more main room details, snips between other rooms and even a trip out, memory says Andy D doubled decked with Dean A?, caught some great stuff from Bob Hinsley, pure joy to hear of Detroit Sounds Of Friction, plus stuff like Oz and Spurlings all sounded good. Alex Jones on ? Didn't catch him but was told due on.Somewhere during nite managed to pass on all flyers for next Monkey, without setting out to. A lot of record sellers and dealers there with a wide selection of stuff on offer, things were going well as spotted recent long want just got at 4 times price paid which always feels good. As managed to get rid of a fair few bits, things felt even better, best laugh was when was offered a cover up in some deal, it all clicked .... above from 1997 and 2003 more lowton based content Eddie Holman Live at Lowton Video 2000 Lowton North and South Lookback the one where the CSC were on Mini Allnighter lookback Top Selections for AUGUST 2005 Lowton Modern Room 1.
