  3. Charles 'Wigg' Walker turns it loose with the Dynamites Soul singer learned from funk and soul legends of the '50s and '60s May have read over the last few years on here reviews and such on Charles Walker's recent shows in the uk, just read an article detailing just what up to right now. A few clips below, just to show that its not just a run of the mill press release, but in fact a interesting read covering current, history, background and what he's trying to achieve and how With the release Tuesday of Kaboom!, an album that fairly lives up to its incendiary title, the group is primed to secure a foothold in the burgeoning deep funk movement alongside Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Breakestra and The Poets of Rhythm..... Etta James and Sam Cooke were just two of the other luminaries with whom Walker worked during that era, a period in which he was fronting a "straight-up soul and R&B" combo called Little Charles & the Sidewinders. Thanks to a push from saxophonist King Curtis, another big name on the scene, Walker and the band went on to become mainstays at Small's Paradise in Harlem. With the Sidewinders, he also released a number of singles for Decca Records. For a neo-funk band like the Dynamites, the tricky thing about turning it loose, to borrow from Walker, is to do it in a fresh way. This is especially the case when your touchstones include James Brown, Hank Ballard and Dyke & the Blazers, pioneers who patented their styles the better part of 50 years ago. "The idea was to make a record that didn't sound like it was made in 1962," Elder said. "We kept that in mind at every point during the making of our album. "Our goal was to have one foot planted in the funk and soul of the late '50s and '60s and yet also to give the music a new twist..... 4. Sad News Freddie Scott RIP View full article
  5. Born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1933, he moved to New York as a child where he sang in his grandmother's gospel choir and even recorded some tracks as a solo singer before entering college with the intentions of becoming a doctor. By the '60s though, Freddie had given up medical school to work as a songwriter in the city's famed Brill Building. Among his compositions were Paul Anka's "It Only Lasts For A Little While" and Gene Chandler's "From Day To Day". The full article can be read at http://www.oldiesmusic.com/news.htm In 1963, Freddie Scott cut a demonstration record of "Hey Girl", a new song by Gerry Goffin and Carole King. The intended recipient was the hit-making Chuck Jackson, but he turned the song down. Instead, Goffin and King liked Scott's voice so much that they recorded their own version with him. Phil Spector heard the results and said, "You've got to put that out. It's a smash." "Hey Girl" was a Top Ten US hit and became a club favourite in the UK, being covered by several beat groups of the time. full article can be read at http://news.independent.co.uk/people/obituaries/article2617422.ece Thanks to Deltree for passing on this sad news The forum thread can viewed here https://www.soul-source.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=49930

  14. A blog that takes a general look at the past week ebay vinyl occurances https://ccdiscoveries.blogspot.com/ as said a more wider look but sure good chance it may be of interest to some clip below One-of-a-kinds and unreleased treasures topped the record collecting market this week. The top auction close went to an ultra-rare copy of Phil Spector's Philles Records "The Screw" recorded by The Crystals. The 45 RPM record was never released, and was recorded by Spector as an unfriendly farewell to his business partner, Lester Sill. The record sold for $6,677.79, from... added to site newsfeed as ongoing test
  15. Recently have read a lot of sh*te over such things and as may be some confusion thought the below may be of interest Obvisouly it is not the done thing if you start cutting and pasting full articles from one site to another without permission however it is acceptable to post relevant clips of content under certain conditions for those interested it is covered by the concept of "fair use" dont want to get bogged down in this sort of thing unless needed, but have clipped a few words from a website may be of interest What is fair use? In copyright law, there is a concept of fair use, also known as; free use, fair dealing, or fair practice. Fair use sets out certain actions that may be carried out, but would not normally be regarded as an infringement of the work. The idea behind this is that if copyright laws are too restrictive, it may stifle free speech, news reporting, or result in disproportionate penalties for inconsequential or accidental inclusion. What does fair use allow? Under fair use rules, it may be possible to use quotations or excerpts, where the work has been made available to the public, (i.e. published). Provided that:The use is deemed acceptable under the terms of fair dealing. That the quoted material is justified, and no more than is necessary is included. That the source of the quoted material is mentioned, along with the name of the author clipped from https://www.copyrightservice.co.uk/copyright/p09_fair_use on posting links the sites policy on posting links can be found in the terms of use as long as the content fits in with terms of use , you can post whatever links you want lost where chumps get the idea of links being somehow covered by copyright on above web copyright issues and such can be complicated that complicated that do have to mention that the above is purely for interest and shouldn't be taken as a definte binding guide or policy on here however as long as members use common sense when posting clips of content or such then there shouldnt be a problem feel free to ask if above not clear
  16. stumbled across this webpage dunno where this one fits in with all others mentioned over last year or so anyone know? Northern Soul Film: Special creative project in preparation Written by Aidan O'Rourke 2007-03-02 I am planning a film about Northern Soul, the genre of American R'n'B music that found an enthusiastic audience in northern England during the 1960s and 70s. It's a phenomenon that continues today. full story at https://www.aidan.co.uk/article_northern_soul_film.htm

For ten years she has been working on a script, now in preproduction, recreating the Northern Soul nights of her youth. "I used to think that if you could put this feeling in a bottle and show people how amazing it is, it would be brilliant."
  19. David Sea - A new 45 release out now from Shotgun records! View full article
  20. News and press release of a fresh new release on the Shotgun Label PRESS RELEASE May 2007 SELECTA RECORDS LTD have established a new label called Shotgun to focus on ‘classic soul’ product. The initial release “Believe In Me” / “Let’s Just Get Together” by soul star David Sea (SHOT 101) is available on 7” single from May 14th. “Believe In Me” “Let’s Just Get Together” Both tracks were written and produced by Jerry Weaver (now deceased) and were recorded in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1971. David Sea is best known as a member of The Temptations but he also has a strong international following as a solo artist. It is often noted that David sounds similar to Teddy Pendergrass but on these early tracks he comes across more like Bobby Womack. Much of the product on Shotgun will be previously unissued tracks from the golden era of soul music. Also scheduled for UK release are vintage recordings by Sam Dees and Rozetta Johnson. Shotgun is distributed by Selecta Records which was formed to provide an outlet for contemporary soul music. The Selecta label was launched in January 2007 with singles by Sheba Potts-Wright and Bobby Hutton and is currently successful with its new single by Simone De. P&R and business affairs for Selecta and Shotgun are handled by music publisher Paul Mooney who is managing director of Millbrand Music. For seven years he acted as production manager and A&R consultant to Grapevine Music Group. Prior to that he ran the Ardent, Zing and Forever labels and negotiated major recording and publishing deals with Polydor records and PolyGram Music for the double-platinum selling pop group Lighthouse Family. Available from Soul Supermarket Crazy Beat, Soul Brother, Beatin' Rhythm, John Manship, Record Corner, Funky Feet etc etc Any enquires email info@millbrand.com
