Hip City Review
Review below was posted recently on Soul-Talk and thought it be worthwhile passing on for all to read as gives a top insight to current Berlin Scene. Sounds like its worth the bus journey . Stacks of playlists etc (just read below then hit read more) january 12. saw the first Hip City Soul Club event at its new venue, the privatclub in berlin-kreuzberg. a nice, quite 60ish venue, situated in the basement of a bar/restaurant (you actually have to go through the toilet doors to find its entrance, with no sign of the club being there outside). Entering the empty club at 11 (the time the doors were supposed to open), we found a nice fridge filled up with beer right behind the dj-booth, a decent sound system, and a very friendly booker who told us to PLAY LOUD, so what more could you want? Max and me were the first on the line-up and did it the good old double decker style were infamous for, and the place filled up much quicker than we had expected...after half an hour, marc took over and gave us a treatment with some more than decent classic sounds, the crowd went wild and asked for more...the atmosphere was overwhelming... about an hour later, the place was absolutely packed, you couldnt squeeze a sheet of paper among the dancers on the floor, every track played got an immense dancefloor-reaction, and i took over. during my second set i was almost wondering if people enjoyed themselves and the sounds played so much or if they just kept on dancing because they couldnt leave the floor due to the place being packed anyway;-) people were obviously in a very party-mood, so i pulled out some more stompy sounds than usual. By that time, the whole event actually was a lock-out for several hours with people queing up down the stairs. The crowd was very responsive to almost every track that got played, no matter if it were uptempo stormers, midpaced/beat balled stuff or an exploding RnB-bomb, both marc and me did a second set, max joined me again, and we all did our best to give people what they wanted. the place kept being packed till about 4.30 in the morning, i even found it appropriate to spin dean parrish as the last record (more of a post - modernist reaction towards the fantastic atmosphere, the drops of condensed water falling from the ceiling, the mighty volume we were allowed to blast the sounds out, etc :-) judging by what ive experienced that night, it seems to me that marcs activities finally get the response they deserve, and the new venue defo did uplift the whole feel of the night. thanks to marc, max, the crowd, and the place the night ended up as a 120% success, Much better than we could have hoped for. see you next time at the HCSC!!! franz --------THE PLAYLISTS (well, only excerpts in no particular order:-)--------------------------- max 1 barbara mason - aint got nobody - arctic joe simon - when - sound stage 7 the celestrals - i feel it coming on - don-el the fabulous peps - with these eyes - wheelsville bobby jones - talkin bout jones - expo barbara lewis - someday were gonna love again - atlantic 2 joe simon - just like yesterday - irral eskew reeder - undivided love - instant fred hughes - i keep tryin - exodus anita humes & the essex - what did i do? - roulette devotions - same old sweet lovin - tri-sound thee midniters - evil love - chattahoochee detroit soul - all of my life - music town the lollipops - love is the only answer - rca johnny bartel - if this isnt love - solid state me patti & the emblems - all my tomorrows are gone - kapp pat lewis - cant shake it lose - golden world edwin starr - backstreet instr. - ric tic charles spurling - she cried just a minute - king doc & the interns - baby i know - now drake & the ensolids - please leave me - alteen emeralds - baby youve got me - king edward hamilton - im gonna love you - jameco dorothy berry - dont give me love - big 3 christine kitrell - call his name - king jimmy robins - i cant please you - jerhart darrel banks - open the door to your heart - revilot pat lewis - warning - solid hit billy lamont - so called friend - branT curtis griffin - i gotta lump - jewel mabel king - go back home young fella - amy johnny sayles - dont turn your back on me - marVlus little stanley lippett - packing it up - C/U big daddy rogers - Im a big man - midas tony middleton - to the ends of the earth - mgm james conwell - the trouble with girls - 4j eddie bo - our love will never falter - blue jay dorothy berry - shinding city - planetary orlons - dont you want my lovin - cameo orlons - spinning top - calla jimmy norman - this i beg of you - samar richard simmons - brother where are you - mala the majestic - send my baby back to me - equator del chontays - baby i need you - steeltown tony owens - this heart cant take no more - soul sound steve carmen bigband - breakaway instr.- UA marc 1. Channel 4 Wigan Thing Last Nite
The Channel 4 15 min programme in the series "Pioneers" concerning itself with Wigan Casino was shown last nite, not that bad considering the subject has been hammered so many times. Format was normal sound bites from many personalities intermixed with old film clips. Featured included Ady Croasdell, Richard Searling, Keb Darge, Irish Greg, Russ Winstanely, Kev Roberts, Pete Waterman Keb Darge was on form with some great quotes, that had me well laughing, and even the music wasnt as cheesy as past ones.

Lowton - Quick Word On Last Nite
Well trip back to Lowton this weekend, last one was at there was the North and South job last year which was the Capitol Soul Club gang delivering with the Northern boys a great nite of rare soul. This one seemed going to be a bit different, billed as a "back to the old school nite" on the flyers and only on till 2am. Advertised line up - Nev, Bernie O Brian, Dave Holt, Steve Burke, Richard Searling, Barry James No lengthy look today just a quick how it was for me, dj billing changed a bit Richard Searling went on earlier than billed, and may have been a few other changes as Kev Murphy did a spot. Fairly packed and a good buzz in the place, few old mates, all added up to a top feel to the nite, sounds wise, well the nite was titled "back to the old school"" and suppose theres a few ways you can take the meaning of that, but dont think it was a tight format, basically going on what I remember majority of stuff was revivals with a lot of worthwhile ones, as in not much cheese and some good interesting choices, and a fair few current spins were added to the mix, phonetics alt vers and mellow souls being just 2 that spring to mind. Plus some top 70s sounds. R+B room was doing as it says, R+B -ing it, didnt spend much time really in modern room as main hall was good, (as always if anyone wants to pass on just send it in) All djs up there in the main floor dished out great sets, and dancefloor was busy throughout. Onto the last hour, last spot here to me is always one you notice as at that time the record bar, alcohol supply, and all other stuff is dying off so not many distractions, so this time Barry James came under the north wales tables critical scrutinty....... and gotta say he did the job, impressed our table with some quality selections which all added up to a great spot to finish the nite, he has said will knock out playlist for those who like that sort of thing so hopefully be up soon. Overall a great enjoyable nite, we travelled up looking for a enjoyable friday nite out and a bit of a laugh and yeah that's what we got, next one in Feb is I believe the anniversary. Thanks goto Steve T for lift and the event organisers for delivering the goods. A Great nite
