  1. Message from Harboro Horace Get your twinkling feet down to the 100 Club this Saturday January 10th ...... 1.30-8am if you want to hear one of the greatest northern discoveries of all time. Think of one of the top three classic northern instrumentals that have never had a genuine vocal. Then imagine a full male soul vocal group giving it all theyve got over the top of it. This was recorded at the same time as the instrumental and has laid dormant for 35+ years. Be among the chosen few to hear and dance to it on its first ever public appearance.

  3. Sinking under a "to do list" that is bigger than me wants list and fast approaching the time to hit the pub. As its always a bit of a reflective time, thought start a "look back" thread and ask all readers to throw up their highlights of 2003 Be it best event, best sound, memory, moment, laugh, misty, and so on...... Here's hoping 2004 will be at least as good 2003 soul wise and have as many laughs!

  6. Hi-Just wanted to see if you could possibly pass the word on that the legendary Motown studio band, The Funk Brothers, will be playing two dates in the UK with guest vocalists Steve Winwood and Isaac Hayes. The dates are Jan. 29th at the Apollo in Manchester and Jan. 30th in London at Royal Festival Hall. We will be playing some predictable Motown songs but also some off-the-beaten track Motown and non-Motown songs the guys played on like "Function At The Junction," "Here Come The Judge," "Cool Jerk," "The Flick," and others. Its usually not good form to go on websites to promote commercial ventures but in the case of the Funk Brothers, it falls more into the realm of a good deed as theyve waited four decades for the recognition and awards they e now receiving. There are other European dates also scheduled on the tour which can be found on our website: www.standingintheshadowsofmotown.com All the best, Allan (Dr. Licks) Slutsky

  8. Saturday 31st of January 2004 sees the first night of what will hopefully become a regular feature of the Dublin Soul scene. Smoove Groove kicks off upstairs in The Legal Eagle (aka The Bar) on Chancery Place, beside Dublins Four Coutrts at 8:30pm with resident DJs Joe Moran and Paul Davis plus guests Honest John, Danny Duggan, Lisa M and Paul Duffy. This promises to be a cracking night with Smoove Grooves from the 70s, to Y2K choons. Its modern soul all the way and hopefully will become a monthly night with lots of excellent modern DJs lined up for future nights. For more info on this and all the soulful happenings in the Emerald Isle check out the website http://homepage.eircom.net/~dublinsoul or email dublinsoul@eircom.net or pauljdavis@oceanfree.net. Listening to the 1961 Hull 739 version and memory of it not good enough to be 100%, but says its an earlier diff version ?? That right ???? 14. On The Scene The only FREE printed full colour National Soul Gig Guide. New issue now out please see screen shot of front cover attached. Listing National events for the month of January 2004. Please note any promoter wanting to get their event listed in the next issue needs to be quick as we are producing the next issue earlier than normal due to Xmas etc. There is an error, New Century Hall should be listed as the 31st of January instead of the 3rd of January. Our apologies here as it was a typing error. New copies are available at Beatin Rhythm and Kingbee Records Manchester as well as Records and Relics (Blackpool) and will soon (Wednesday) be at Milwards Records in the midlands, Soul Brother (London), Crazy Beat (Essex) as well as from Fresh Promotions direct by sending an SAE to; Fresh Promotions, Rosevilla, Dockypool Lane, Marton, Blackpool Lancashire FY4 5JG Failing that keep a look out at most soul venues around the UK and youll probably be able to pick up copies that way also, however subscription is the best way if you would like to guarantee your copy (£5 for the year which just pays for the postage and packing). Cheers Paul On The Scene The only FREE printed full colour National Soul Gig Guide.

  18. Major revamp Soul a go go Web Site View full article
  19. One of the earliest and also the most worthwhile northern related web sites has been subject to a major revamp along with a new name Northern-Soul.com (aka Soul-a-Go-Go!) being the new name and domain, with new features, look and feel. It looks like it will build on its well deserved reputation and status as a regular worthwhile visit site click here to visit Always rated Martins site, as may have noticed theres a lot of northern related sites out there In attempt to seperate wheat from chaff, how about using comments to pass on your best rated sites
  20. Well after Mr Searling raised hopes that the decreasing influence of kev roberts meant that one of the most well known names connected with Northern Soul has seen the light and given up the dark path. Last week it seemed there was a slight relapse, with the return of the "Jazz Fm - nothing like the truth section". Reports say according to jazz fm Prestwich was packed as always, now as all reports had was that this particular Prestwich event was quiet, So whats the fuss a bit of exageration never hurt anyone did it, well in this case not really, though bit sad seeing return of such stuff. It along with the total non-mention of New Century niter on same nite was thought to be just a minor lapse, case of hard to give up old habits and soon every thing be back to normal. Well had to mention it as the thoughts were wrong! Had from the North West reports from many sources have been pouring in of a new wave of going ons, for those who remember the classic dirty tricks as was seen in the recent togetherness failed attempt to ruin the Prestatyn weekender earlier this year, hearing going ons been like meeting old mates. Coming very soon the score and more

  23. Managed to catch up with a quick read of the latest Manifesto issue. Since Dave Rimmer improved the security of his travelling event stall, making our sly quick flick throughs a thing of the past. The glossy magazine review side of Soul Source has fallen by the way side. So while welcomed a rare chance to catch up with latest issue, was a bit quick and as working on memory as had to hand the mag back, feel that can only give a brief note, see below. To help us improve this failing, and give visting Soul Fans a view of the latest going ons in the glossy mag world, we ask anyone who read latest issue, if possible could they post up view on the mag. My brief view was, certainly changed a bit since last looked at it. Design and feel seemed different from last one seen, and while many articles which seemed worthwhile and invited further reading. Unfortunately the main article that stuck in mind was one that listed the top 5 NORTH WEST Northern venues. While memory ensures that can't give credit to who wrote it, have to say that on reading it had to check two things. First the cover to see if wasn't reading a certain other glossy mag and then secondly to check if reading the heading correctly. Cut it short , find meself asking just how do people knock out these lists, what do they use to actually decide between the many events on nowadays As may have guessed found the listing a bit suprising and imagine be suprising to a lot of soul fans. 1. King Georges Hall Blackburn 2. Longfield Suite 3. Bury town hall 4. Preston Grasshoppers 5. The Ritz Brighouse Now am sure they are great venues and quite possibly deserve acclaim, however it does make me wonder just what the writer judged events. To be fair further comment would need further "research" (putting hand in pocket and buying a mag maybe a good idea:)), so will pause and for now just ask all out there If any views what factors should be taken into account to make up a top 5 event list?? Feel free to post/discuss/comment
