  1. Chuck Carter, that's the fella. Cheers mate
  2. I listened to this at the time, Guy came over really well, even if his knowledge of female fashions trends on the scene was restricted to "strappy dresses"! I seem to remember him playing a really tight mid tempo track, credited to a familiar name but unreleased? He described it as "finger snapping soul", he might also have said "super smooth, out of Chicago" (quite Smashie n' Nicie. Not 'alf!) - ring any bells?
  3. Future Retro! You've just been and gone and invented a new sub genre! Anyway, WTF do The Kids know? Gormless looking twats in their skinny jeans and crap trainers laughing at me? Get my toe up their arse in rapid order, they would! Is that me at the back of the photo?
  4. I believe the children are the future

Thank you, Brian Blessed! Gadzooks! If 'motowntommy' (and that's one dundercock of a name) is old enough to be a grandparent, he ought to be old enough to have learnt some common sense in his time. At least, enough common sense to know that waltzing in early doors to niter you don't like or support, without so much as a 'by-your-leave' to the fellas running the do, dishing out flyers for some wanky oldies night then giving out vulgarities when approached is not likely to earn you a hearty handshake and a bottle of light ale for your troubles. The man's a fud.
  6. Mark, I had a blue label one, bought blind from a US list and I remember being distinctly unimpressed. Ok, I was pissed off that the record which arrived didn't turn out to be the one Keb was playing at the time, but I'm pretty sure it was a poor effort in it's own right. Couldn't give the bugger away, if I remember correctly!
  7. Still haunted by the Ghost of Art Posey? Good, serves you right for taking advantage. You know damn well that E's and sales boxes don't go!
  8. Any difference in price between the red and yellow issues?
  9. Really?
  10. Blimey, I never noticed a balcony! Clifton Hall was the first niter where I started to know what was what. Went to the Casino a couple of times in 81 but I didn't have a clue what was going on. CH was identified by Neil and the boys who ran our bus from Edinburgh as being the rightful heir to Wigan so that's where we frequented, and where I learned my trade! Gary Rushbrooke was the first DJ became aware of, I mean, he was the first guy whose name and tunes I recognised. Consequently, Gary became a favourite and it was a great pleasure to bring him up to the Crown Hotel and Glenrothes YMCA a few years later. I seem to remember him playing an instrumental of Ain't That Peculiar at CH, did I imagine that? Another fond memory is of walking straight onto the floor on paying in and without breaking my stride danced to Richard playing Maurice McAllister/Mr Soul 'What Happened to Yesterday', resplendent in army trousers tucked into DM's and a mad big army rain coat (yep, discoverng gear was also part of my apprenticeship!). Also remember a hoo ha over The Preston Street Dancers. They only seemed to come to life when Richard and Poke were playing modern, but the old skool Northern lads weren't happy them folk blowing whistles and assorted jazz funkery. Wished I still had my 'On Top With Soul' badge, had it for years. Great days Any more pics would be sweet!
  11. Hi Baz, 23 years - holy shit! Good to hear from ya mate, and glad to see you're on the mend. All the best from me & Stevie
  12. Dunno if he wrote them or if it was Eddie Singleton, but yer man Eddie Daye sure had a way with words. He wasn't quite so flowery with Lean On Me on Dayco: "Baby baby I dig you the most Wanna be your leaning post (!) Love's given you a dirty deal I know I know How you feel You can lean, lean, lean Lean on me" WTF's a "Leaning Post"?
  13. Close the thread now, it can't get better than this!
  14. Howdy Mark Steve's had one for donkey's years, mid-80's after Nick Peacock put us on to 'Deeper Shade' and other Latin soul boogaloo say 'ello to ma leetle fren mambo madness groovers. Right tidy old LP, as I recall.
  15. If it's still there you gotta get it scanned and loaded up!
  16. Thanks Graham, that's great stuff.
  17. 'kinell, this is the stuff! When did these come out, and are there any still about? Brilliant!
  18. While the Soultown niters were newies driven, Guy had all DJ's include a couple of token oldies in their sets. At the first one I distinctly remember Butch playing Hank Jacobs - Elijah Rockin With Soul and Keb playing Mickie Champion - What Good Am I!
  19. He did? The cheeky twat! Can't imagine there would have been much in the way of crowd 'rustling' going on there, we wouldn't have been seen dead in one of Gibbo's oldies extavaganzas. Well, most of us wouldn't. Eh Byrney?

    It's all in here Mate:
  21. Aye aye... I've one or two knocking about. What's the tracklisting Andy?
  22. By a country mile, The Magnificent 6 'Neither Will I' on Dial. I quote: "So close No breeze could blow between us So tight You couldn't part us with a Tommy Gun Standing in the need of each other Like a flower Standing in the need of the sun" WTF were they thinking? The verse as a whole is well done and suitably delicate for an otherwise nice and gentle harmony ballad, but 'kinell, that line...
  23. 'kinell Mick, that's a cracker! Keb drowned out all the others, this mad Scottish voice going "AH CAN'T CHA-A-A-ANGE"!
