  2. 60’s Northern: Stafford era sounds, half-knowns/semi-knowns/well-knowns/garden gnomes: early 60’s r&b shouters to late 60’s sweet soul and a dose of proper mid 60’s Northern goodness in between. Fill yer boots… Caper Bros - Ain’t Got The Nerve - Roulette demo looks vg+, plays ex Ā£25 *** SOLD *** The Expressions - You Better Know It - Federal demo ex Ā£45 George Sharp spin from the attic room in Stafford, fine group sound The Flairs - You Got To Steal It / Where You Live - RAP ex Ā£200 great group Northern, mid tempo flip getting attention too George & Teddy - So I Cry - Phillips ex Ā£50 Northern in a picture sleeve! No idea how well known this decent stomper is *** SOLD *** Jimmy Holiday - I’ve Been Done Wrong / I Can’t Stand It - Diplomacy ex Ā£60 IBDW is a loud, fast, brassy Northern banger, ICSI on flip is outstanding deep soul Joe Moore - I Ain’t / I’ve Got My Sweet Baby - Verve ex Joe as in the the Mar-V-Lus & Tru-Glo-Town guy, another two fine sides on the tougher issue Ā£80 King Ernest - I Feel Alright / Hold It Baby - Barry demo Ā£70 ā€˜Alright’ is a rowdy, fist pumping old Pat Brady c/u, ā€˜Move’ a smooth R&B-ish finger snapping groover Ozz & The Sperlings - The Broadway Earthquake / Mojo Hanna - Villa vg+ plays ex Ā£60 vinyl doesn’t look too clever but both sides play loud, crisp & clear The Radiants - Don’t Wanna Face The Truth / My Sunshine Girl - Twinight ex Ā£60 two sweet late 60’s dancers from the ever-reliable Radiants, on Syl Johnson’s in-vogue Twinight label – what’s not to love? The Entertainers - Love In My Heart - Symbol ex Ā£125 a proper, fast brass driven Northern dancer and all the better for it. The Turks - The Bad Brought The Good - DJO Ā£200 occasional Dave Thorley spin from Ye Olde Days, not as well-known as it deserves Tony Talent - Gotta Tell Somebody / Hooked on You - Vando both ex Ā£50 old school swaggering Northern; brassy, punchy quality oldie. ā€˜Hooked’ ain’t half bad, either… Vernon Garrett - Angel Doll / Hop, Skip & Jump - Venture both ex Ā£55 and another killer double sider, classy mid/uptempo dancers *** SOLD *** Vernon Greene & The Medallions - Look At Me, Look At Me - Minit vg+, plays ex Ā£75 enjoying a new lease of life according to recent playlists, and rightly so. Not so sweet on the eye, surface scuffs & scratches but it really does play loud and clear ****************************************************************************************************************** Terms (please do read this if you're gonna buy something) : - Making an offer to buy - please PM me but also note on the sales thread there's a PM on the way. - Prices - while I'm sure my prices are reasonable, I might be open to offers on some titles, so ask. 3. Pm on the way Cap'n
  4. PM'd ya Boss
  5. Stompers, bangers and teeth gnashers; mid tempo finger snappers and gritty slower tracks to pull pained soulful grimaces at. But nae pish! All ex condition Diane Cunningham - Certain Kind Of Lover - Fontana Ā£100 it’s Chicago-a-go-go here, with Eugene Record, Cam Cameron and Keny Wells all rolling their sleeves up to forge this mid tempo finger snapper that has a wee touch of ā€˜Love Uprising’ to these ears. Diane – who she? – has a perfect voice for this song, too Felice Taylor - I Can Feel Your Love - Kent *demo* Ā£55 raucous, brassy, gritty, pounding banger that’s quite the opposite of Diane Cunningham. Original 6T’s style! ***SOLD*** The Penetrations - Sweet Sweet Baby / Champagne Shing A Ling - Highland Ā£400 selling my collection has been a relatively pain-free experience so far, but every now and again I’ll pull something out that makes me shudder to think it’s for the off. This is one. From a young age I came to realise Mr Leonard Jewell Smith Esq was a musical genius and anything he had the vaguest connection with should be bought. If Len Jewell walked in on someone’s recording session and farted, that record would be worth buying. Two fine sides of splendid Northern Soul here, and a genuine, seldom seen rarity. ***SOLD*** Richard Anthony and The Blue Notes - No Good / The Boston Monkey - Swan Ā£80 both sides are 100mph, rowdy, horn-laden baw kickers. Full on! *** SOLD*** Rick Sheppard - I’m Gonna Change - Bang *demo* Ā£85 top drawer connoisseur’s sound. I’m holding Dean Anderson responsible for this gem, from Ye Olde Stafford days Shirley Karol - My Baby’s Gone Away - Dakar *demo* Ā£75 damn fine Chicago crossover action, with some serious wailin’ an’ a hollerin on the flip The Danderliers - All The Way / Walk On With Your Nose Up - Midas Ā£75 right, WTF’s going on here? 3rd time I’ve listed this and keep dropping the price, with ne’er so much as a tickle. None on Discogs, Popsike notes one from December at $96. One of the harder Midas releases, I had some mileage out of at Allanton it in my DJ’ing days. Come on, buy it… The Stereos - I Can’t Stop These Tears - Cadet *demo* tidy wee track this, sounds like it’s from the late 60’s and quite fitting for today’s vibe The Visitors - I’m In Danger - Bashie Ā£50 my man Len Jewell again, and an in-vogue group. The rarer first release before Dakar, great Northern dancer, typical Len Jewell tackle… The Visitors - Never The Less - Tangerine * demo* Ā£125 and speaking of typical Len Jewell tackle, their other one on Tangerine, and rarer than the in-demand ā€˜What About Me’. Just a bloody good group who made bloody good records for people thousands of miles away across the Atlantic! Towanda Barnes - If I’m Guilty - Groovy Ā£80 another relisting and again, miles cheaper than Discogs. ****************************************** Terms (please do read this if you're gonna buy something) : - Making an offer to buy - please PM me but also note on the sales thread there's a PM on the way. - Prices - while I'm sure my prices are reasonable, I might be open to offers on some titles, so ask. 6. Performers, Johnny Scott, Notations and Herman Hitson all sold. Apologies to anyone I haven't replied to personally. Minutes after I posted the sales up I had to shoot away on some unexpected family business and unsuccessfully tried to keep up to speed on my phone. Almost sold a record twice (sorry again, Mr You-Know-Who ). Lesson learned...
  7. 60’s Northern, good ā€˜n proper. Nae Pish! The Whispers - You Can’t Fight What’s Right / You Got A Man On Your Hands - Dore Ā£200 classy double sider, ā€˜Fight’ is in ex condition, ā€˜Hands’ is vg++ labels are pressed slightly off centre but just the labels, the centre is dead on. NAP. Jimmy Burns - Powerful Love / Giver Her To Me - Tip Top Ā£130 both ex condition: ā€˜Powerful’ is a gritty, fist pumping dancer, ā€˜Give’ a nice Sam Cooke-ish (Cooke-y?) number. As with The Whispers, labels are wonky but centre hole is true. NAP. Sam & Kitty - Your Money My Love - Four Brothers ex Ā£50 understandably in the shadow of ā€˜I’ve Got Something Good’ but this really is cracking, tuff-assed dancer in it’s own right. Jackey Beavers - Sling Shot - Checker ex Ā£45 big, bouncy banger by Brother Beavers (that’s enough b’s – Ed) ***SOLD*** Herman Hitson - She’s A Bad Girl / Show Some Sign - Minit demo vg++ Ā£135 what a voice, ol’ Herman couldn’t half roar 'n holler with the with the best of them! Gritty dancer and wailing ballad, condition dictates price here – plays much better than the marks and blemishes suggest The Blues Busters - Love Is The Answer - Minit demo Ex now here’s a lovely uptempo dancer; great harmonies, soaring strings and good vibes lyrics. Quality tackle. ***SOLD*** The Performers - I Can’t Stop You - Mirwood demo Ā£55 Ex tight, punchy, brassy dancer you don’t see too often, more so on demo Johnson, Hawkins, Tatum & Durr - Your Love Keeps Drawing Me Closer / You Can’t Blame Me - Capsoul ex Ā£50 another fine double sider: ā€˜Drawing’ is a tidy mid tempo finger snapper, ā€˜Blame’ is gorgeous sweet soul ***SOLD*** Johnny Scott - Somebody Help! Anybody - Porta ex Ā£60 can’t make head nor tail of this one, an oddly-compelling Northern-y, R&B-y, Mod-y groover that’s got ā€˜ Stafford tape swappers’ written all over it (in a manner of speaking). Fabulous Traits - Lonely Man / Love Is Strange - Tele-Phonic ex Ā£40 seen this getting mentioned in dispatches lately. It don’t do shit for me but WTF do I know? (note to self: don’t sound negative when trying to sell something...) ***SOLD*** The Notations - You Should Know - Sue ex Ā£400 saving the best ā€˜til last: in my book, the very best from the fantastically consistent Notations, a group really in vogue at the moment. This is a joyous, bouncing, brass-driven Northern dancer that never had the credit it deserved. 8. Quality Oldies: the authentic Northern Soul sound from the scene's golden era. All 1st issue originals - nae pish! Billy Butler - Right Track - Okeh demo vg++ Ā£150 stone orig, JZSP 113544 stamp Bob Relf - Blowing My Mind To Pieces / Girl You’re My Kind Of Wonderful - Trans American ex Ā£150 THE greatest double-sider? Perfection! Bobby Bell - Don’t Come Back To Me / Drop Me A Line - RCA demo ex Ā£100 and speaking of great double siders, but these two are full-on, no nonsense Northern bangers Bobby Garrett My Little Girl - Mirwood ex Ā£200 this is Northern Soul! 16. Dean Anderson and Guy Hennigan were talking about this on Dean's radio show last year. Joe Clements was an Irish fella who lived in Macclesfield and did a bit of singing. He liked soul, so became 'Soul' Joe Clements. How he came to get a record deal is anybody's guess. Apparently, some record hound managed to sniff out where SJ's house was, knocked on the door, spoke to The Man Himself and posed the million dollar question "so...er...Joe, sorry, Soul Joe: got any spares"? Dunno what the outcome was...
  17. And it would have been the late Neil McKillop playing it, I'm sure. Thanks for sharing! :-)
  18. I started selling up last year, wee lists of 10 or so records every few weeks on here and Facebook, and while I was (and continue to be) amazed at how civilised buying and selling has become these days, I eventually took to inserting a little list of T&C's at the end of every sales post I put up. I used to feel a bit daft about it at first, just being a geezer selling off his collection rather than being a 'dealer' as such, but it really does make sense not to leave anything to chance, not to assume a buyer will let me know that he won't have the dosh for a week, or that the sale is dependent on him making sales, or that he can only pay by cheque, etc...

  22. 60’s Northern, Good ā€˜n Proper! Duke & Chi Towns - Let Me be Your Baby Sitter - Spinning Top ex Ā£35 nice, Windy City bouncer. Can’t recall this being played out back in ye day… *** SOLD *** The Four Exceptions - You Got The Power / A Sad Goodbye - Parkway demo Ā£75 brilliant, long forgotten double sider: ā€˜Power’ is yer full on, rip roaring, 100 mph old skool Northern stomper and all the better for it, ā€˜Goodbye’ is an sweet, mid-uptempo finger snapper. The vinyl is in excellent condition, the labels much less so. Now, when Ah were a lad, a nice clean label was all very nice but I’d be buggered if a messy label would put me off buying any record I really wanted, but not everyone thinks that way, so the price reflects the nick of the label…***SOLD *** Joe Hinton - Got You On My Mind - Backbeat ex Ā£50 really nice, upbeat dancer. A Stafford tape-swappers staple… ***SOLD*** Johnny Gilliam - Baby Take Me Back - Modern demo ex Ā£80 and talking of Stafford. Timeless mid tempo magic… ***SOLD*** ***SOLD*** No No Starr - Swing Your Love My Way - Midas ex Ā£40 storming Northern/R&B honker, Guy Hennigan’s old something-or-other c/u…***SOLD*** The Ebonys - Don’t Knock Me - Soul Clock vg++ Ā£40 I tried collecting Soul Clock back in the day, hoping to find more Times A Wastin-type sounds, but ended up with lots of things like this: kinda Northern, kinda funky, kinda groovy; in other words, useless for the 1980’s but in vogue nowadays. It’s also very good, by the way! The Herbs - Never, Never (Will I Fall In Love) - Smoke ex Ā£75 killer harmonies, melodies, horns: the archetypal Northern Soul sound I feel in love with. Really want this record to have a loving home. Tyrone The Wonder Boy - Please Consider Me / You Make Me Suffer - Four Brothers ex Ā£60 I don’t what age the Boy Wonder was when he sang these two grumbling Chicago chuggers but ye Gods, he was no stranger to the ladies or the night life. Two mean, badass teeth gnashers you’d be compelled to try dance to after being up all weekend, with your legs going one way and what’s left if your brain going the other. I also have his other two 4-Brothers releases… Willie Parker - Don’t Hurt The One You Love - M Pac ex Ā£70 Chicago couldn’t half turn out sturdy mid tempo fist pumpers! First heard this from a John Manship 60’s Newies tape, no one seemed to pick up on it at the time, now enjoying a new lease of life after Willie’s recent visit to these shores. ************************************************************************************************************************************ Terms (please do read this if you're gonna buy something) : Making an offer to buy - please PM me but also note on the sales thread there's a PM on the way.
