  1. That seems a little cynical to me, but probably only because I'm naive as to how the world works. Some time ago I posted a file of what I thought to be my Northern records - I guess I was looking for people to say "Nice records" or "Such-and-such is a particularly good one" or "Just a bunch of junk, not even Northern, try again". I got a couple of PM offers (I wasn't looking to sell them, but I can now understand the confusion on that), and a couple of replies along the lines of the ones here, i.e. "What is the purpose of your post?". My only goal, as a record hoarder, was to pick the brains of people in the know and, although the response was limited, it was still helpful.
  2. Well, as promised, the artist. Further investigation has revealed that the "Phil" on the label refers to the Phillipines, and not Philadelphia (in any case, I was imagining it sounded like something from Texas or somewhere like that). Also, I now doubt my original assumption that a Grandells from Italy must be some other band - I now think, from some bio information, that they're probably one and the same. Further, the flip (which is probably the a-side, and which seems the lesser song to me) is uploaded to youtube. And, finally, somehow when I searched Gemm this morning I didn't notice that there's a copy for sale there for 6 bucks (so my dreams of a big score evaporate, and the kids get nuttin' for Christmas this year!).
  3. That reference sails right over my head, I'm afraid. I'm not sure how to load clips onto Soul Source, usually I "embed" a DivShare link to a site but that doesn't seem to work here. Not trying to be coy about the group's identity, just figured I'd photograph it and post it here when I get home in a couple of hours. The group hasn't been mentioned on this site and, in fact, I find no mentions on the web or in the guides I own (which are, admittedly, older editions) - and I myself know nothing abou them. I see the clip's gotten some listens, but no one has opined; I wonder if that means it's not thought too kindly of?
  4. Couldn't find anything about this artist or record; if anyone is at all interested I'll post a picture of the label later on (headed out the door now for my day of work). DivShare File - mystery soul.mp3
  5. I always have to kind of wonder what happens to 45s that ship out to England (except for one given - no feedback gets left). Here's my copy of this great single sold about three months ago: https://www.popsike.com/php/detaildatar.php...nr=270260913779 Or I should say, it's one of the two copies I dug up recently; I kept the (ever-so-slightly) mintier one.
  6. Yeah, nothing on gemm or ebay made me wonder, but further search has turned one up for sale at NorthernSoul45s.co.uk for 15 pounds. So, mystery solved, thanks!
  7. kelly_garrett.mp3 Her "Love's The Only Answer" record is the one I see referred to. On the other hand, can't find this one for sale around on the net (still, could be common as all get-out, I just don't know). Not a Northern beat, that's for sure, but soulful (um, I think, you tell me). Any info appreciated, thanks.
  8. Bluesy, but with lots of soulful horns (if anyone wants to hear it, I'll put up a clip). Not in my guides, don't see references here or on the net. Flip same track in mono. Any info appreciated.
  9. The bottom certainly has fallen out of the doo-wop market, and the question is whether it can "come back" in the future; many would say it's just too odd-sounding to modern ears. So I guess that presents the same conundrum re: soul - will there perpetually be new fans based on the strength of the music itself? Since I'm such a pauper otherwise, if I absolutely knew that soul prices would decline in a similar way as doo-wop has, I'd be rather forced to sell 'em instead of leaving them to my kids (who'd just unceremoniously dump them for next-to-nothing etc.). You folks with actual clubs to go to where you can spin the records and engage in your social activity of choice, it's different for you, and I'd say you're pretty lucky.
  10. Nope, I'm only selling to the extent I need to, to pay the odd bill; merely noting that people (from this very board, in fact, when I posted a list of my records seeking comments on the quality of the collection) have sent me PMs advising me that now is the time to sell (because, y'know, fans are getting too old to dance and will be dumping their collections any minute now).
  11. Until they shuffle off this mortal coil, at which point their relly's will dump it all unceremoniously onto the market for next to nothing. This is the rationale I've been given, by people ostensibly in the know, for selling everything now.
  12. Wow, how does he know what you had for breakfast? I can't figure you Brits out, not one bit, you're a mysterious lot!
  13. I'm not sure I get ya there - does he sell them to you or not? Anyway, I'm not him, if anyone has any interest in these two please let me know:
  14. Like you say, though, this person didn't know the value and wasn't necessarily even a soul fan....he might understandably be hesitant to offer something that he didn't know the value of (an Ebay auction reveals a "worth"). Personally I like soul music a lot but I'm very much a novice at knowing what's what. I think the true fans (uhh...my British cousins) deserve first crack at these sort of records, as they're using, living, enjoying the music and not just sticking it up on a shelf and giving it the occasional listen. I've started two topics in this forum in the last week or so, asking for info on two records, and I'm definitely going to sell those particular two records; if anyone here's actually interested in them I wouldn't want to give the impression that I'm just trolling for info and not interested in taking offers on them.
  15. I think that washing records by hand gets them cleaner than any machine does - and it's low-cost and fun. You'll need: - Three 100% cloth diapers (a 12-pack, which will last years, can be bought at Walmart for about 9 dollars). -A bottle of 90% isopropyl rubbing alcohol (not the 70% stuff, that sometimes has lanolin in it). - A couple of plastic gallons of distilled water, sold right alongside the spring water jugs in the supermarket. - A bottle of Dawn liquid dish soap (soap designed for the sink, not for the dishwasher) - A couple of bowls. - A place to stand up records; I stretch a tablecloth or beach towel across a table and stand record boxes or other boxes all over the table - then lean the records along the edges of the boxes. Find an empty milk jug or some kind of big plastic bottle, clean it out really well, and fill (leave some room at the top) with four parts distilled water to one part rubbing alcohol. Add three or four drops of Dawn, and shake vigorously (that's why you need the room at the top). You now have the best record cleaning mixture known to man. Pour some of the shaken mixture into a soup bowl. Fill the other soup bowl with distilled water. Take two of the three diapers and fold each in thirds so that it is one-third as wide but still the same length; in other words, fold it twice lengthwise (can't really describe that well). Set the third diaper aside, near the record-standing table (with the boxes on it). Take a folded length-wise diaper and push it into the cleaning mixture, saturating the diaper pretty well (you'll get the feel for it). Place the wet diaper length-wise on your hand (starting at your fingers and running along your palm and onto your wrist), and cup your hand. Hold a record in your other hand and cup the wet diaper around the record, so that your diaper-coated thumb is along the grooves on one side of the record, and your diaper-coated fingers on the other. Spin the record slowly with your other hand, so that your stationary "wet" hand gets the record spun right through it. Rotate the record several times, uncup your hand, turn the record over, recup your hand and repeat. Make sure the diaper is wet enough - plenty of moisture will prevent the record from being harmed. Place the wet record down somewhere (perhaps on a fourth diaper, or leaning against a non-slip surface), wring out the cleaning diaper and set it next to the cleaning mixture bowl. Saturate the second length-wise diaper in the distilled water and repeat the process, spinning the record through the moistened diaper (and removing all of the soap and residual dirt). Place the record down, rinse out the diaper and place it next to the distilled water bowl. Bring the wet record over to the record-standing area and drape the unfolded diaper over the record and pat the record dry - don't rub the diaper on the record, just pat it with your hands on each side, like praying with a 45 between your hands. Inspect the label and pat it dry carefully if it's gotten wet during the cleaning process. Carefully lean the record against one of the boxes or whatever you're using to stand records up. let the record dry for at least twenty minutes before returning to clean sleeve. Once you're into it, it takes about thirty seconds a record. This works equally well for LPs and 45, too, of course, but don't ever use alcohol on a 78.
  16. Confused about seeing labels for this as "Am I Hot, Am I Cold" instead of other way 'round. Is one more prized than the other, and is my VG+ copy worth anything? (I gave this one a listen....nice!). Thank you.

Thanks, checked it out; the clip sounds really good, but it's not precisely a "dancer", is it? Off topic, but noticed that this section on Manship's page features almost 1,600 records that are the "Rarest Of The Rare", somewhat diluting the definition of the term "rarest", no?

Got one, found it ten minutes ago in a lot of 2500 45s that I bought here in Pennsylvania (I'm just getting started looking through the lot, too, so I'm excited). Was in a box containing chldren's and country music. Looks NM. Will probably list it on ebay later this week (times are tough, and this record is apparently worth more than I paid for the lot). Questions: is there a clip of it up anywhere (that's right, I don't know it and I haven't played it yet, I'm still just sort of...looking at it). Is it circa 1965, and is there any bio info at all about the group (or person, or whatever)? Thanks.
  19. Do yours look like my copy? I'm guessing it's worth 80 pounds easily, as it's really good and just about never seen (or so I thought, surprised to hear someone has two). Not sure how Northern it is, though...

I know this question might be very dumb, but is this Tom Jones the Tom Jones? I've one 45 guide (Osborne) that lists it along with all the others, and another guide (Neely) which gives it a separate listing as if it's a different artist. It sure sounds (links included, and it's soul that's quite good) nothing like "What's New, Pussycat", but I've had one person assure me it's the same fellow. I'm very much indebted to you for your help! https://www.mediafire.com/download.php?zx43nkglzei https://www.mediafire.com/download.php?nx0wbnn11di

I don't know about this specific case, of course, but I do think that the appearance of collections of those who owned or worked for, or were related to owners or employees of, labels and pressing plants is not that uncommon. That is probably happening a lot more than people coming upon boarded-up record stores. The idea of ten copies showing up, in this manner, of a heretofore utter rarity seems much more likely than a high-quality counterfeit being produced.

More and more Americans "know about" Northern Soul, and I mean specifically they know they can sell these records to overseas collectors. I was at an auction on Saturday (here in Pennsylvania), and the advert had pictured a stack of several hundred 45s. By the time I got there, an hour before the auction was to begin, the place was crawling with people who were pawing the records (and even moving them around from box to box, and marking the boxes they wanted). I think a lot of these people are retirees who've finally figured out that records aren't quite the yesterday's-news that they'd thought. There was plenty of soul, too, and that's what this crowd was excited about, but I figured I was not going to be getting bargains that day, so I left before the fireworks began.

Thanks, y'know, it's nice but I'm gonna ebay it (and a few others) - need proceeds towards the family beach vacation. New question, then: what do ebay buyers from the U.K. expect to see as the postage situation when they buy from the U.S.? A USPS delivery at around 7 dollars cost, or something with a confirmation for more than that? Do packages often get lost, do they really even need the confirmation ? Comments appreciated!

Just discovered that I have this. It seems to have been pretty sought after, at least a year or so ago...is it still? Thanks.
  25. That's exactly the case, and those are the places I try to uncover on "yard sale" days. One good thing about Pennsylvania is that it's the state where you're most likely to stay if you're born there, i.e. there's no reason to contemplate throwing the records away (they're not moving to Florida), so the records just sit and sit and sit. And, of course, there's the typical disconnect from reality about what records are worthy - people cherishing their trashed reissue of Meet The Beatles and never giving a second thought to the big stack of 45s that crazy old Uncle Chester saved up.
