The Major Iv
Cracking tune Mark, I hadn't heard that one. I do agree with Molly though in that my favourite is Down in the Ghetto. Always reminds me of Jimmy Conwell and the Exits sound and production for some reason. Jordi

James Shorter
I bought my James Shorter (about £50 a few months ago off Ebay ) on the strength of the Masqueraders version. The Masqueraders is on the lp Love Anonymous and it's a 70's take on the song, and it's a cracking version. Jordi

Four Tunes You'll Probably Know
Great tunes Dan. Otis Leavill is a big spin in my house! Jordi

Cania "visions" Tammy Jo Re-issue?
I agree with you Ivor. A great tune that never gets played out. I'm sure after all the copies have dried up and gone into collections it will become a sought after tune. Great pleading vocals. Jordi

Unknown Artist Acetate
Very nice Pete, a nice atmospheric late night kind of thing after you've knackered yourself out dancing and you want to drink a long cool rum and coke and listen to what tunes the DJ is playing. Jordi

What's On Your Decks / In Your Player?
Kev, you need to flip this over for the other side. Mid tempo heaven! A few things nursing my hangover today have been: Dynamics - Woman (Brainstorm) Don Hart - Soldier coming home (Cool school) Blues Bag Ltd - I'm Gonna Love you (Plumm) Cane & Able - Relating a message to you (Epic LP) Funky Team - It's about time (Sonet Lp) Sophisticates - I really hope you do (Underground sounds) Otis Leavill - I gotta right to cry (Lucky) Mmmmm!! I'm in the mood for another beer. Jordi

Vanessa Kendrick Vs. Gwen Mccrae
Tone, I've had this conversation a few times, but to my ears I have always prefered Vanessa's version. You're wrong about the backing track being the same. It is precisely because of the backing track that I like VK's version better. It is much slinkier and sexier, with a real lowdown dirty grooving bass line that would grace any sound system, and wicked strings that give the tune real tension and atmosphere. I agree that Gwen's vocals are better but in this instance I prefer the overall feel of this record despite weaker vocals. Just my opinion. Jordi

Wanted
Phil, I've got one of these as well. I was told it is the rare one by the group but I haven't a clue price wise either. Jordi

Want: Village Choir
Aitor, £250 for the 45 is a good price. The 12" is cheaper but there is a long drawn out guitar solo in it and quite a bit of repetition. The 45 is a lot better IMHO. "Along the beach" is OK in a cheesy kind of way and has a good atmosphere about it that would appeal to Northern soul fans, but it's nowhere near as good as Sweet Hot Lips. You don't get this flip on the 12". Jordi

Want: Village Choir
Hi Aitor, There is one in the sales section posted by Mike 22nd May. (Anglo American sales). The flip is listed so it might be worth checking that it's not a promo with the same song on both sides, otherwise it should have "Sweet hot lips" on the other side. Great track!! 161 VILLAGE CHOIR ALONG THE BEACH NYC Street Sound 1000 M- £250 Jordi

Paul Weller / Dean Parrish Promo Of New Single
Nice one Coops. All the talk going on about this made me really want to hear it. Verdict, well it sounds pretty much as I expected. they're competantly done tracks, The Left , right... track sounds very dated in it's style though in terms of what people are generally into these days Northern wise, and the Timi Yuro is quite fast with a funkyish edge. I'm at a bit of a loss as to why they have been done really, apart from Paulweller and the Ocean Colour scene boys trying to get a bit of cred out of doing something "Northern" and working with an old Wigan hero. I always thought Weller had heard Northern before when he recorded that track (forgot the title) that sounded like he had just listened to the World Column "So is the sun", but those posh Ocean Colour Scene lads from Solihul..... I'm not so sure. Not bad tracks though and I certainly would rather hear them on radio 1or 2 than most of the other corporate blandness and Indie twoddle. Jordi

Soulful House
Agree Roger, and it might help if the first five minutes and the last five minutes of the records were mixed out thus leaving the essence of the song, and lessening the overblown, overlong studio knob twiddling. You'd think they were made for people on drugs or something. Get the tunes in and out and cut in with other genres and styles and they would sound less 'samey' and have more impact. IMO. Jordi

Break A Dismal Record
no, No, NO!! I was talking about Cornel as a record I love. How can this be a damaging record to the scene? I've hardly ever heard it played out by anyone for a start. It's a great crossover/70's dancer a bit like Ad Libs - Fortune Teller. I wouldn't mind being the bin man round your way if you're chucking out class like that. Personally my bin would be full of 60's white pop records, 50's Doris Day clip clop country records, 90's/Y2K Drizabone clone dance records and 60's Ken Doddalike records. All of these are much more embarrassing IMO. Jordi

Soufriere 1 April 2006 Set Sale List
Taylormade, I've bought a good few things from Kev over the last few years, including Stan Martin 45's, Frankie Zhivago Young 45's, Nobodies Children 45, Beres Hammond LP's. Sometimes it's been a painful journey to get the records with emails flying back and forth, sometimes the wrong records arriving, so having to send back and start again etc, but Kev has always come through good with the tunes, he just needs to organise himself a bit better. It's always a pain when you're anxiously waiting for a record, but I would put money on Kev not letting you down. Jordi

Marshall Donovan Broomfield Thats Love Mp3?
How much did it go for Steve? I've a copy but have never seen it for sale. any ideas on price? Jordi

Marshall Donovan Broomfield Thats Love Mp3?
I think you're right Gav. I was pointing out that the sound clip was not the track that the orig poster wanted to hear. Just trying to sort out potential confusion. Jordi

Marshall Donovan Broomfield Thats Love Mp3?
Ted, the soundclip is "Since I found my baby", this for some reason is going for a fair bit at the moment, probably £350 ish. The really good one by them is "That's Love", it's a slow grooving deep tune that came out on a compilation by Goldmine in the early 90's called "Mellow gooves" or something like that. It's much rarer and better than "Since...." Jordi

What Is The Meaning Of The "ns Black Fist"?
Rick, my post was made with me tongue firmly in my cheek. I didn't do politics either back in my Northern soul youth days, but I did start to recognise injustices just on the level as to why fantastic obscure black music never got radio airplay yet the crappest of pop music would, making those performers rich, and keeping the black performers unknown. Jordi

What Is The Meaning Of The "ns Black Fist"?
Yes it's probably a symbol of the Black power movement representing black solidarity in the struggle for equality and respect in a bigotted rednecked country. Adopted by lovers of a particular music genre in the UK with certain records capturing the essence of the struggle by such artistes as: The Shakers Paul Anka Lorraine Silver Bobby Goldsboro Bobby Diamond Gene Pitney Elvis Frank Popp Etc, Etc.
