  1. Yeah, maybe out and out funk wasn't the best description to use especially given my limited knowledge on the subject. I'm talking about records that are as far removed from soul (for me) as you can get, like some of the ones Russ posted Which I suppose are probably as far removed from out and out funk as you can get if you are genuinely into out and out funk There are loads of records with a funky edge that are fantastic, but that's not what I'm talking about - or what I understood the thread to be about. It is the heavier stuff that (for me) just isn't good enough
  2. You know what I mean. It certainly isn't about the Delegates of Soul!
  3. Absolutely and again a million miles away from the out and out funk that this thread is about
  4. I have heard George a few times and sometimes he has played more soulful style tunes (some crackers too I must say) and other times full on funk. In his defence (not that he needs me or anyone to come to his defence) he is a funk DJ asked to DJ at a soul do which is a million miles away from a soul DJ playing funk
  5. I know next to nothing about funk because I don't care for it (as a rule). That said, I know what it sounds like. I do know a little about soul music however and on this particular note I give up! Edit: Have you read this thread? It is the out and out funk type tunes we are talking about here
  6. I know less than nothing but I'm sure there is more to funk than a guitar. Jeez if you are going to apply that rule of thumb, God knows how many out and out soul records would be re-classified as funk
  7. Me too. Jeez, what's funk about Ron Kenoly?
  8. Not for me it isn't!!! Embarrassing as it is, this does happen. That's not the DJs fault though and half the time I'm not entirely convinced they're not doing it to take the p*ss
  9. Hi Rob Yep, I hear ya. Nothing wrong with oldies, they are all oldies at the end of the day and I for one would not have it any other way. Have to say I wasn't a fan of the Old Bell as a venue, music was great mind and a good mix too. See you at your do next year if not before
  10. Yes it's all relative. We are talking about a rare weekender here though and as has already been established (or at least assumed) the attendance would not be as large as the more commercial events. Therefore I will say again, 500 people in a venue playing the music I love would be fantastic
  11. Pretty sure the big weekenders wouldn't be happy with 500 people
  12. I'd settle for 500 people in the right venue playing the music I love. Would I ever!
  13. Mystiques - good (played for years so don't really know why it's been posted); Charlene - ok (same) but these records are not what I'm talking about. Can't believe I'm even having to say that
  14. Oh Russ, bless you ... but no
  15. John Harris is as far as you can get from the stuff I'm talking about. As is Sir Guy (not my fave tune but it's ok). I'm talking the second rate blaxploitation (for want of another way of putting it) type stuff that just isn't good enough. Please don't ask me to give examples - I don't make any effort to know stuff I'm not interested in. If your taste has changed and you want to listen to that type of sound is there not a scene for that already? No disrespect meant, serious question. Edit: I consider myself pretty open minded and can put up with tunes that I don't personally rate no problem at all but it is getting to the point now where it spoils a night because there is so much of it. Maybe I should just avoid those venues
  16. What was the problem with the thread Chalky? I really don't get it. Sallie asked if there was any interest in a weekender and I said yes (possibly) as long as it was soul and not all that funky edged stuff because I know she has a big liking for that type of sound. What was wrong with saying that? Edit: yes it may have snowballed a little but hey, that's what happens. As for starting another topic? I really couldn't give a funk about discussing the merits of funky edged soul because I honestly couldn't give a funk about it.
  17. Why not tell people to stop talking about oldies too then? Plus I think the funky edge thing is relevant to this thread as I know Sallie does like that type of sound. She asked if people would be interested in a weekender and from that I took it that she would be running it and therefore I gave my opinion which I am entitled to do. No biggie and for what it's worth I thought the thread was quite constructive.
  18. Paul will be the first person to tell you I was not a fan of a lot of the stuff he played He did play some that I thought were crackers, but they were the more soulful ones
  19. I agree, there is the odd tune that hits the spot and I said exactly that on another thread recently. It's just that on the whole they lack that certain something that makes a tune special (for me) and that is the reason I go out.
  20. Not so Russ. I have been going to venues for a lot of years and it is only very recently that I have had cause to say this. People are playing stuff now that is just not good enough (for me) for no other reason than to play something uknown or what they consider to be unknown. Sallie asked the question and I answered honestly. I would go (if possible) if it was a soul weekender
  21. No idea about the scene - I just think it's pants (on the whole)
  22. Sounds good in principle as long as it is soul and not all that funky edge stuff that just isn't good enough! Also the location would have a big part to play in it's success / failure.
  23. Yep, great photos!
  24. Hi Len No jewel from me but this reminds me of a tape I had about 20 years ago, loads of great tracks on there but no listing. Like you I slowly managed to put titles and artists to tunes but one track alluded me. I counted on the fact it was called I Want to Thank You (or something similar) - do you know how many records there are called Thank You? Fecking hundreds - I know cause I listened to most of them! Anyway, fast forward 15 years (found out what the record was by now btw, took about 2 years though) had a video of Shotts anniversary here, had it years and was watching it again one day when the camera zoomed in on the decks while Andy Whitmore was DJing and the next record he played was the one I'd been looking for. Couldn't believe it cause the video was made before the tape. The record was Matt Brown - Thank You Baby - Jar Val. Phew!
  25. Have to say I don't ever remember seeing a copy of Charles Brandy for sale (not saying there hasn't been one of course). 2 fantastic sides and up there as one of the records I have wanted most since I started on this road. Absolute bargain!!
