  1. Peter I think that calling pressings / bootlegs "second issues" or "re-press" has come about because of ebay; I don't think you can list a bootleg as a bootleg because it was never produced legitimately i.e. paying royalties etc, and it's not good to pass off a fake, intentionally or not, as an original. 99.9% of records out there are either originals or pressings, but sometimes bootlegs are sold as originals!! Due to demand a few labels did re-issue stuff (Artic ?), but often on a 'sister' label; the Vibrations you are after came out on Epic, but was re-released on CBS- Columbia Special Products. However, the spinning of legitimate re-issues may be frowned upon because there are originals out there that you could buy and spin. Nevertheless, labels like Kent, that have put out unreleased stuff are regarded in a different light because that's the only way of playing out the sound, and they're legal!
  2. Any ideas what this is & what's the vocal to it? Detroit? Solid Hit Bound bongos? Golden World?

The Four Arts publishing is Elsid Music Co. which I am sure someone told me was Sidney Barnes's
  4. Out of interest to what are good mid tempo tracks, would any of the kind souls who are taking part in this swap, mind sending me a PM with their track listing? I can then look out for the titles. I thought about taking part, but I don't take any notice of what's out there legally on CD and so might have broken a few copy right laws!! I promise I won't banger you for any copies of the CDs you're swapping!!

Hi Kolla What year is the album & is the track the long version? The reason I ask is because I have a black & red label 7" from 1973 with NOT FOR SALE on it which is 2:57 prior to 12" records being widley available. I have also seen the 7" as a white demos, but never bothered to check the release date. However, I've also got a UK 12" by 'The Urban All Stars' from 1998 called "It Began in Africa" that has a long version on it, published in 1976 Polygram records. Was it released on Polygram as a 12" in '76, I've never seen one?

The Jackson Sisters - I Believe In Miracles - Prophesy records from 1973?

The UK boot was done in the mid 80's with reversed labels. Check out the other side, the Michigan Move, which was a one-off popular spin for Guy Hennigan, but that's to say who actually pressed them up!!
  8. Originals are either white demos or grey issues on styrene - if you tap it GENTLY it will give off a metalic "ting". Also, if you run your finger nail up the edge of the label it will catch as they are glued on. The pressing was done of the grey issue in the 70's and look and sound virtually the same. They were done on vinyl and have a 'molded' label i.e. no distinguishable edge between the label and the run-out, and a dull "thud" if you tap it. Definatley one of the best non-Motown, "motown" records to be made - probably because half the musicians on it had a strong Motown connection, shall we say!!
  9. Lewis Sisters - Breakaway - u/r Motown
  10. CURLEY MOORE - £520 ERNEST MOSLEY - £618 CHANDLERS £857 GEORGE KIRBY £356 CHRISTINE COOPER TEST PRES £304 LADA EDMUND ISSUE £382 FLAME N KING £305 HOUSTON OUTLAWS - £457 MR CALDWELL - £250 BOBBY PARIS - £307 Each about 3x what they're really worth IMO!

In the middle; where the world's got piles, "Riot Town" Boston in Lincs. Bought a one way ticket out many years ago. Saying that it has been the stomping ground for several "Soulies" including Andy Rix, Nigel Parker, Chris Modley, Dave Appleyard, Steve Handbury & now Paul 'Gazza' Gasgoine! And my mother, who loves J. D. Bryant and Paul Anka becuase he wrote "My Way"!!
  12. Late last year Manship had it on a set sale list at £150. In January there was one on abay that went for $435.00 (about £240). Then in March Manship had a Sterling Sound acetate up for auction which I think went for £400+. I bought mine off John Buck about 18 years ago for £20 which I thought had been previously owned by Sam. At that time there was another in a collection which had come from soul Bowl for around the same price.
  13. Remeber the Lenny Curtis on ebay a couple of months ago, that the seller knew wasn't an original, but still got daft money for it? Be very careful of any record that was both originaly, & booted, on styrene (both pressed at the Monarch plant)
  14. The current from the cartridge is very small and needs to be amplified. You can feed this signal directly into your PC's sound card, but you will need a sound file editing progamme to amplify the recorded wave file (signal) and the quality is not too good. In the old days, amps had a built in pre-amp which the phone plugs from your record deck are plugged into. New amps / souround sound sytems etc don't usually have a built in preamp now. You can buy seperate pre-amp that boosts the signal before going into the main amp OR (with the help of a phono to mini jack lead) into your PC's sound card (line in). You can get a pre-amp from your local HiFi shop - I've got a PRO-JECT Audio Systems one called "The Phono Box mm/mc preamplifier" which cost about £25 - £30. Alternativly, you can go along to PC world and buy a copy of Steinberg's Clean PLUS that has a pre-amp (that's the PLUS bit). However, this pre-amp is power buy your PC via a USB lead , so you'll need a spare USB port! I think it's about £60, but you do get some decent software to tart up your recodings - get rid of hiss and crackle etc. Plus the phone to mini jack lead If you are transferring old tapes to CD via you're PC, you do not need a pre-amp to boost the signal from the tape deck.
  15. I bought a Pioneer 609 from Richer Sounds a while ago for less than £200. It is very easy to use and the recording quality is excellent. Play back quality is not bad too, if you're into Hi Fi. I would track one down you won't be disapointed.

Can anyone remind me who these lot are?

Forty soon, and am thinking of selling up to finance a new sport car to try and pull “chicks” half my age – all part of the impending mid-life crisis! With prices as they are now, I think should be able to afford a new Bedford Rascal van with a soft top! Seriously now, has anyone sold their collection in the last 2-3 years and not regretted it?

I've been exposed to "Northern" for over thirty year now and have understood the following genres (in chronological order): Northern – 60's soul, often obscure small label releases stuff Oldies – the above that have been played extensively over the last three decades Newies – new release or recent release, at the time e.g. Skip Mahoney 60's Newies – e.g. Keb, Guy spins at Stafford Modern – 70's & 80's releases & now anything from 1970 to the present Can anyone please inform me what exactly is? Popcorn Cross-over Beach Deep funk (as opposed to funk) Two-step (Sensible answers would be appreciated as I keep buying total s**t off eBay under the guise of one of the above)

I am pretty sure this is just hearsay. I know of an Andantes, but the owner doesn't have a Frank Wilson or know of anyone who has got one, in the UK Motown (non- Northern) circle.

Only on the issue, don't go buying a demo as they are double sided www.soulwalking.co.uk/Ujima.html
  22. So I didn't get a release, but has it been released on CD since? Or will I have to put up with my naff tape from a battered old acetate?
  23. Did Chris Jackson's "Since there's no doubt" ever get a release?
  24. It's a fair question and there is an answer to it out there. I can't remember the name of lady in charge of the wardrobe during the 60's; I've got a video with her being interviewed on it somewhere, but can't remeber where that is either!!
  25. Sorry my mistake, I was thinking of another auction last year. I'm sure if John said he's only had the one copy, it is true. Must be the drugs! I'm on medication because over the last couple of years, every time a see a "rare" Northern record with a blue or bluey-green label, I seem to see multiple copies…… Jackie Daye, Royal Esquires, several Shrine disks (Cautions, Ray Pollard, Epsilons, the other Cautions), Greater Experience, oh yes and the Dream Team – I saw a thousand of them!!
