Richard Temple would have to be the obvious one. Also I lve the intro to Lynn Collins "Think" & The Marvellettes "My Baby Must Be a Magician."

It's never going to happen. The music is about 40 years old. It's a very acquired taste. A small minority of people like a bit from what hear on the radio/tv but don't take it further. A smaller number buy CDs and go to the occasional do. A much smaller number collect records and go out regularly. I think that's about a far as it's going to go. Probably for the better.
  3. Rose Batiste "Hit and Run" sums it up for me. Perfect Detroit, Motown soundalike, stomper.
  4. "Just Call My Name" however, from the Nobody But You Lp is a real choon and a half!
  5. I've just listened to "Watcha Gonna Do About Love" for the first time in ages. I never really struck me playing the LP before. Good track but not one of his best imo.
  6. I even love his early stuff pre Brunswick. OK it's not northern soul (maybe not soul) but they're still great records. Perhaps Reet Petite should be added to the list for a laugh.
  7. I'm not a great lover of instrumentals when there is already a well known vocal take. However, I do like good instrumentals and I think they can still be soulful. Things like "Tune Up" for example.
  8. Isn't Morris Chestnut an actor? I think he was in Platoon. Surely there can't be two Morris Chestnuts.
  9. Well done mate. Good post & merry xmas.

Charles Earland? Doesn't really match your description though.
  11. Some warm up DJ! He used to have Stoke rocking within 30 minutes of doors opening. I remember the first Togetherness allnighter there well - Derek played Hoagy Lands, Bobby Womack, Gladys Knight and it couldn't have started better. RIP.

There's great clap a long moments during the instrumental breaks of Jackie Wilson "Because Of You" & carla Thomas "I'll Never Stop Loving You". When I first got into the music, I used clap to "Sliced tomatoes", "Fortune Teller", "Ghost In My House" & "The Right Track" ....would probably seem a bit naff now.

  14. I can't really think of hardly any cover versions that improved on the original. One that springs to mind though, is Daryl Hall's cover of Marvin's "When Did You Stop Loving Me"

Epitome of Sound Sam Dees are great clap a long songs
  16. Maybe the sound quality might be better? Some northern soul dos I've been to, the sound quality has been awful.
  17. It doesn't bother me at all. Just love the music man.
  18. Yep. A fine goalie for a fine team. Part of Terry Venables team of the 80s which lasted a season

I've been to both and enjoyed them both. I think they can cater for diffferent crowds for it's highly possible that someone may prefer one to the other. It doesn't mean it's better. The thing they both have in common though is great live acts. Bunny Sigler - wow!
  20. For me, it's Otis Redding - simply for sheer raw power and emotion. I admit that he's not technically the best ever. That would possibly go to Al Green or maybe even......................Luther Vandross.

As someone who used to be a big fan of The Jam, their cover versions of soul records helped me get into the music in the first place. I've not been a fan of PW since The Jam split up and basically think he lost the plot ages ago. He's run out of inspiration - quite sad really.

Oh, and I got an LP that I left behind loads of times before and thought I ought to finally get myself a copy after hearing a track at A New Chapter at Smersh, London earlier this month. Al Wilson - La La La La La La La La La La La La La Peace Song for a fiver too.

I bought Little Milton "I Know What I Want" on Cadet at a local record fair recently for a fiver. Very nice record.
