  5. Groovesville tunage up for grabs. PM any questions or to reserve. Right Combination – Storyteller – Malaco Ex+ £650 “Storyteller” is a sublime number from Detroit’s Groovesville Music Publishing setup, the original version by Steve Mancha has certainly served the traditional Northern scene well over the years, and the Enticers version on Cotillion a decent understudy In my opinion neither compares to the quality of this so difficult to find mid-tempo crossover cut, laid down at Malaco in Jackson, Mississippi. A missing entry in several online Malaco discographies, suggesting it is indeed a rare under the radar 45, and therefore not on many if any playlists. Excellent plus condition, couple of very light handling marks, which don’t affect play in any way. 2 XOL. https://soundcloud.com/user-833795819/storyteller PayPal by friends please or add 4%, or bank transfer. 10. You’ll be familiar with the 70s repress of James Dockery’s ”My faith in you has all gone” on the blue label. Every image of the blue label ive seen online, popsike, discogs, dealers, forums etc. whether its the issue or promo imprint is numbered 1 and includes ”all“ in the title. I’ve come across a copy numbered 001 and excluding ”all“ from the title. I can’t find an image of this variation anywhere online, so I wonder if anyone knows why the credits on this single copy differs from all the others? There may be more of course, so if anyone else has a copy of the 001 number that would be useful to know. Cheers, Lee

  13. Couple of corkers up for grabs. Happy to provide additional images and sound files. PM any questions or to reserve. Innersection – I’m in debt to you / Let me love yuh – Group 5 101 WD M- £1100 Fantastic 70s out of Memphis, both sides as we all know are top drawer dancers that’ll do anyone’s decks proud. Very sparse information on this group which appears to be their only work on a unique to them label. Produced by Tom Nixon, a jack of all trades; producer, arranger, writer and engineer for various labels including MGM, Venture, We Produce and Motown before achieving the lofty height of executive status at Stax no less. The 45 has a very slight lift on edge that does not affect play on what is a M- surface. Flip label has title penned over, I guess this was the side a DJ wasn’t to play! That’s the aesthetics I must mention, but its what’s in the grooves that counts! Gambrell’s – Jive talk – Pioneer 2109 M- £350 Renowned Detroit girl group at their catchy, vibrant, glorious best, serving up an exceptional dancer on Gary Rubins own label. Pat Hunt, along with sisters Sharon and Sandra Gambrell originally formed a backing group working with Deon Jackson, but they or Ollie McLaughlin quickly realised their potential as artists, recording for the Carla label, which included the 1966 classic “You better move”, before this single Pioneer release, and moving on to the Cub label an MGM sub in 68' with “Love is in the air”. Beautiful M- copy, there’s something about Gold label. The only thing to report is light bubbling from the vinyl from pressing process, that does not affect play in any way. 14. Here’s a really obscure and delicious item up for grabs today….. Happy to provide additional images. Sound files included. PM any questions or offers. Ellingtons – The Agony of the Ecstasy / She's Mine – Baker Sound acetate Ex OFFERS (min £400) Rare and collectable slice of soul history on a Baker Sound acetate, featuring a longer running and possibly slower paced take of the Ellington’s Northern beat ballad “The agony of the ecstasy”, backed with an unissued cool garage rock track “She’s mine”. I can identify there are 2 copies of this pairing on acetate, along with at least 1 acetate copy of “(I’m not) Destined to become a loser” paired with an unreleased group soul cut “Girl has gone”. Originating from Westfield Acres in East Camden, New Jersey, it was inevitable that the Ellington’s would strike up a relationship with another musician from the area, Rob Russen who came to manage and produce some of the groups coming out of NJ, Phila and NY. Influenced by what was coming out of Detroit particularly Motown, and Memphis, this blue-eyed group moved away from garage rock to dabble in soul and group harmonies. This culminated with 2 releases on Castle Records titled “(I’m Not) Destined to Become a Loser” flipped with “The Agony of the Ecstacy”. As Northern fans will know Castle Records is also famous on the Northern scene for the Millionaires monstrous “You’ve got to love your baby”. There is evidence of 2 full LP Baker Sound acetates containing many more recordings from the Ellington’s which for some unknown, but common to the Northern scene, never saw the light of day. Baker Sound was also Camden based, owned and operated by Norman Baker from a motel in the early days, and onto Philly’s Chestnut Street until a fire in 1980. The studios still operate from another address today catering of course for more modern artists. “Agony” is an outstanding but overlooked flip for the Ellington's, superb sumptuous lead vocals, storyline and harmonies. If you’re like me and have a taste for Garage too, the flip appeals, and remember it never got released. The playback on both sides is Ex or better, the top side label has a small piece missing affecting “Agony” in the title, but not significant and the flip side label has lost 3 times the size of the top side, but all the credits remain intact. Ellingtons - The agony of the ecstasy.mp3 Ellingtons - She's mine.mp3 I’ll let the option for OFFERS run until 8pm on Weds 01 Nov. PayPal by friends please or add 4%, or bank transfer. 15. Need something to brighten up your box and forays on the decks, here it is…. Happy to provide additional images and sound files. PM any questions or to reserve. Norris Vines & Luvlines – Give in – Smile 112 M- £800 SOLD Superb copy of this mid 70’s soul winner, glides along on a wave of vocal ranges. I can never work out whether it’s the lead belting out high and low or the Luvlines taking turns, but then there appears to be an equally strong vocalist called Curtis Cary in the group, so chances are he’s in on the act too. Outrageously uplifting dancer and a guaranteed floor filler, and it has to be, the label owner Dave Coutts was previously a psychologist who clearly wanted to bring a bit of joy to the wellbeing of the world, and it does that in spades. As much as I love them, it’s fair to say that when you look further than Canada’s commercial releases of US Soul, there’s a wide spread of independent labels serving up top quality Soul for the Northern scene, this little beauty is one fine example and in glorious condition. PayPal by friends please or add 4%, or bank transfer. Postage: £7.65 – Special Delivery (Fully insured up to £750) £8.65 – Special Delivery (Fully insured up to £1000) Overseas on Request ATB, Lee
  16. Happy to provide additional images and sound files. PM any questions or to reserve. Syl Johnson – Do you know what love is – Special Agent 200 WD Ex+ £450 SOLD I remember my introduction to this was by Russ Vickers, a superb DJ at Abshot Country Club way down on the South coast near Fareham, probably been known for some time, but it was an illuminating moment for me and never been without a copy since I tracked one down after. An absolute masterpiece, Chicago at its best and 2 minutes has always been far too short for me, but that piano intro, dance beat, rough vocals all make up for it. Same SP-1 mix as the red stock copies. Couple of light marks, do not affect play. Feint signs of use on labels. Duplicate copy hence sale. PayPal by friends please or add 4%, or bank transfer. Postage: £7.65 – Special Delivery (Fully insured up to £750) Overseas on Request ATB, Lee
  17. A trio of fabulous affordable double siders up for grabs. Happy to provide additional images and sound files. PM any questions or to reserve. Bobby Montgomery – Make me yours / Seek and you shall find – Highland 078 WD M- £150 (The top side a superb cover of the Bettye Swann hit, you know what you’re getting here! and the flip nothing to be sniffed at, an edgy Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong compo, that echo’s the later Motown output of the Tops and Temps, overseen by the awesome all-rounder that was Arthur Wright) Tony Owens – I’ll Be There / Wishing, Waiting, Hoping – Soulin’ 146 M- £150 (New Orleans release from the Issac Boldens stable, he’s pretty hands on, owning, penning, and producing two gorgeous side that straddles tastes, the top sides an upbeat gritty dancer backed by whooping girls, the flip is an equally appealing soulful chiller. There’s a lot to like about this semi-known gem) Fantastics – High note / That one – Sound Stage Seven 2548 WD M- £150 (Glorious male harmony driven group soul, 2 fabulous mellow mid-tempos, in fine shape just the feintest mottling on a portion of label, hardly visible) PayPal by friends please or add 4%, or bank transfer. 18. Some odds and sods up for grabs, a mix of familiar, under the radar, easily overlooked, hard to find and perhaps auction items, but set sale they are. Happy to provide additional images and sound files. PM any questions or to reserve. Bernie Williams – Ever again – Bell 768 Ex £4000 (First came to light on the scene in the early 70’s but remained extremely rare for the 50 intervening years. Amazing that this version licenced to the major label has come to be the harder to find, versus what appears to be an earlier local release on the Philly Del-Val label by Gene Woodbury. I’m one for eye catching label designs so I know the liberty bell logo ticks my box, but it doesn’t distract me form the awesome rarity on offer here. Visual condition is Ex given the drill hole, light bubbling of label, and a few sleeve marks on the surface, audibly it plays Ex+) Keni Lewis – What’s her name – Buddah 191 M- £275 (Washington DC crossover winner from the Shrine artist, in lovely condition) Turley Richards – I feel all right – Columbia 43837 WD Ex+ £900 (Thunderous vocals carried on a wave of horns, drums and sax, just lacking the kitchen sink. Tidy beat ballad on flip. Let’s face it, it’s a fabulous slice of crossover come 70s Soul and so dance floor perfect. Minor edge lift does not affect play) Innersection – I’m in debt to you / Let me love yuh – Group 5 101 WD M- £1200 (Fantastic double-sider out of Memphis, both top drawer dancers that’ll do anyone’s decks proud. Flip label has title penned over, and very slight lift on edge that does not affect play, but that’s aesthetics and its what’s in the grooves that counts!) Exceptional release on Gary Rubins own label. Some bubbling from the vinyl from pressing process, does not affect play) Bessie Banks – Don’t you worry baby the best is yet to come – Quality 503 Ex £450 (Divide the Gambrell’s by 3 and you’re left with one, and what a one, this little beauty drenched in a musical composition drenched in sultriness, so, so, soulful. Lovely blue stocker, very light label ageing) Sammy Campbell – I never thought (I’d find anybody like you) / SOS for love – Queen City 1601 Ex £700 (Sammy, or Tyrone Ashley, a son of Newark NJ, is most associated with fans as the lead of the Del Larks, but also for writing for George Blackwells, Smoke label. A talented fella who left a legacy of rarities for the scene. Hard 45 to turn up) Specials – I can’t find another – Satch 515 M- £450 (South side Chicago group, also recorded as the Cassadons on Satch’s subsidiary Beltone. Nice clean copy, with an edge lift that does not affect play) Norris Vines & Luvlines – Give in – Smile 112 M- £850 (Superb copy of this Canadian mid 70’s soul winner, glides along on a wave of vocal ranges. I can never work out whether it’s the lead belting out high and low or the Luvlines taking turns, stunning good feeling soul. Outrageously good and a guaranteed floor filler) Tony Owens – I’ll Be There / Wishing, Waiting, Hoping – Soulin’ 146 M- £150 (New Orleans release from the Issac Boldens stable, he’s pretty hands on, owning, penning, and producing two gorgeous side that straddles tastes, the top sides an upbeat gritty dancer backed by whooping girls, the flip is an equally appealing soulful chiller. There’s a lot to like about this semi-known gem) New Young Hearts – A little togetherness – Soultown 10 Vg+ £125 (This old Northern stomper must have filled some floors in its time, voices raised wording the unmistakable lyrics. 20. A peach from Washington DC’s impressive Mir-a-don label. Happy to supply additional images or sound files, please PM any questions or offers. Ascots – Another day / Love – Mir-a-don 1004 M- OFFERS Archie Powell, along with brother Eddie, cousin Jerome and Irving ‘Scacy’ Heywood formed their own fab four at Donald Whaldon’s ‘House of Hits’ gifting the Northern fraternity with 8 released tracks of high quality Soul between 65 and 66. ‘Another Day’ and ‘Anytime’ secured a lasting place on the Northern club and collecting scenes, and very able back up came from the likes of ‘Miss heartbreaker’, the stunning lowrider ‘Love’ and the classy beat ballad ‘Yes it’s alright’, the picks for me. Each and every production though emphasises the high level of vocal quality and talent this quartet had, using these few opportunities to express their outstanding skill of group harmonies through dance paced and slower arrangements urged on by rasping horn fanfares or subtle strings. Let’s not forget there’s also a couple of other fabulous outings on the label in, Pat Thompson & Archie Powell and Patty Stokes dance floor filler ‘Good girl’ making this a very short but highly sought after label catalogue that skipped from one print format to another release after release. Although there appears to be consecutive numbering system on releases, I do wonder if there’s anything else out there yet to be unearthed. Mint minus playing surface on both sides, very minor ring wear on label, which is not surprising on such a soft pink label imprint. Even on the back of Manship’s very high auction sale in April, the minimum offer here is £1500, running until 8pm Thu 14 Sep 23. PayPal by friends or add 4% please, alternatively bank transfer. Fully insured UK postage included, overseas to be determined.

Some marks on vinyl, 6-7 light pops on exit to run out) Keni Lewis – What’s her name – Buddah 191 M- £300 now £275 (Another crossover winner on a Washington DC release from a talented fella who has remarkably served some time with 2 Shrine label groups no less, the Cautions and Enjoyables, and then the Chancellors on Cap City. Wow what a transition from those 60’s barn stormers to the less frantic 1970 groove) Family of Eve – I want to be loved by you / Please be truthful – Full Sail 751 WD M- £500 now £450 (Modern soul combo from Pittsburgh, PA with a reputation for being, apparently, the longest running group in the region. Unusual double sider in that both sides have very strong lead singers, male on “Loved”, female on “Truthful”, what a great mix. Blue vinyl release) Willie Kendrick – Change your ways / What’s that on your finger – RCA 9212 WD M- £525 now £500 SOLD (Double bubble here with 2 fantastic sides from the treasure trove that is the Pied Piper stable, “Change” the uptempo R&B tinged Northern dancer, and the stunningly emotive beat ballad “Finger”, you couldn’t want for 2 better sides and at the opposite end of the spectrum on a single slab of vinyl. A masterpiece on the scene) Specials – I can’t find another – Satch 515 M- £500 now £450 (South side Chicago group with 3 known late 60s releases on a label with a numbering system starting oddly at 512, ending at 515 and no apparent 513! Maybe there’s one or more to come from the Specials, who also recorded as the Cassadons on Satch’s subsidiary Beltone, all linked by Fipa or Heno publishing and Johnny Finch on the credits. This copy is nice and clean, with an edge lift that does not affect play) PayPal by friends please or add 4%, or bank transfer. 22. 30+ Motown stable doubles, all white label promos. Take some time out to remind yourself of the sheer brilliance of Hitsville USA, captured in this relatively short but juicy list of tracks, many household titles, others understated and deserve huge respect. Universally the most aired Soul output for most of the 60’s. On the whole many play Ex or better, all individually graded, some have writing or stickers on label, but don’t let any visual issue distract you when the vinyl plays superb. As ever sound files and additional images available on request, PM to ask any questions or reserve. 1) Barrett Strong – Yes, no, maybe so – Anna 1116 WD Ex £25 (Early release on a distant sub and rarer demo. #ol) 2) Temptations – I want a love I can see – Gordy 7015 WD Ex £175 (All of a sudden there’s a lot of interest in this early Temps dancer, issues going for similar prices and the rarer demo now exceeding £200. Label has removed sticker mark and a printed star, but forgetting the visual defect the vinyl plays stunningly Ex+) 9) Martha & Vandellas – What am I going to do without your love – Gordy 7053 WD Ex+ £25 10) Temptations – Ain’t too proud to beg – Gordy 7054 WD 7054 M- £40 SOLD 11) Temptations – Run away child, running wild – Gordy 7084 Vg+ £5 (Same track both sides, small writing on one label, light scuffs here and there) 12) Martha Reeves & Vandellas – (We’ve got) honey love – Gordy 7085 WD M- £25 SOLD (Fantastically fresh femme dancer. Same track both sides, with one side playing M-, the other has a little bit of feedback on the run in but clears up) 13) Four Tops – Baby, I need your loving / Call on me – Motown 1062 WD Ex £30 SOLD (Superb double sider, the chart-topping side backed with a Sam Cooke like beat ballad. Xol) 17) Barbara McNair – Everything is good about you – Motown 1099 WD M- £40 18) Four Tops – I’m in a different world – Motown 1132 WD M- £25 SOLD 19) Jr. Walker & All Stars – Money – Soul 35026 WD Ex £15 (4 biro xol on flip) 20) Little Otis – I out duked the duke – Tamla 54058 WD M- £30 (Lovely early tune, on a nice west coast styrene Monarch pressing) 21) Kim Weston – Looking for the right guy – Tamla 54100 WD Ex+ £20 (Single sided, red marker initials on label, pressing bubbles DNAP) 22) Marvelettes – Danger heartbreak dead ahead – Tamla 54120 WD Ex £25 (Rarer west coast press, 2 red Xol, ignore the visual appearance, this plays EX or better) 23) Miracles – My girl has gone – Tamla 54123 WD M- £20 (Outstanding mid-tempo, Smokey does it again, twin globes logo, 2 red Xol) 24) Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell – Ain’t nothing like the real thing – Tamla 54163 WD Ex £25 25) Isley Brothers – Just ain’t enough love / Take some time out for love – Tamla 54182 WD Ex+ £35 (What a double sider, great cover of Eddie Hollands delicious “just ain’t”. Indianapolis press, Twin Globes logo) 26) Smokey Robinson & Miracles – Abraham, Martin and John – Tamla 54184 WD M- £15 (Ignore the title, this is a fantastic track. Very minor edge lift, does not affect play) 27) Smokey Robinson & Miracles – The tears of a clown – Tamla 54199 WD M- £20 SOLD (Capital letters logo, Promotional Rockway NJ pressing) 28) Smokey Robinson & Miracles – The tears of a clown – Tamla 54199 WD M- £20 SOLD (Tamla box logo, D.J copy) 29) Smokey Robinson & Miracles – The tears of a clown – Tamla 54199 WD M- £30 SOLD (Monarch, LA pressed styrene copy in tip top shape) 30) Four Tops – Is there anything that I can do – Tamla Motown 1010 WD Ex £100 (French Tamla Motown release of 7 Rooms of Gloom, as with many of the European releases promoting commercial output of Hitsville, they are often coupled with an amazing unreleased on USA 45 flip. Totally outstanding and slapped wrists for the weekly meeting missing this one, what were they thinking?) 31) Hitsville USA – Greetings to Tamla Motown Appreciation Society 45 Ex+ £50 SOLD (White label special, gifted to the UK crowd back in the day. Combination of spoken dedication by staff and songs by artists. Very collectable and historic disc from Motown, very minor edge lift) 32) Hitsville USA – Greetings to Tamla Motown Appreciation Society 45 Ex+ £50 (White label special, gifted to the UK crowd back in the day. 23. Thought it was on the Valmon label, unless released on Amos too, which I never knew? Would be good if you could clear that up? Ta, Lee
  24. Across the board, 60s’, 70’s, modern, girly, blokey, groupy and obscure, so a bit of something for everyone. Happy to provide additional images and sound files. PM any questions or to reserve. Skye – Ain’t no need – Anada 100 Ex- £175 (Mid 70s California release, and a cover of Ralph Graham on Sussex. Some marks on vinyl, 6-7 light pops on exit to run out) Ike (Isaiah) Porter & Fabulations – You ain’t seen nothing yet – Anla 107 Ex £500 (Very rare Lake Charles release on Eddie Shulers label catering for the hybrid east Texas and south Louisiana audience and better known for the Charles Green release. This raw unpolished group soul 45 with a lowrider flip has rarely surfaced, the few copies that have are beaten up. Producers name penned out on both labels) Natural Four – Hanging on to a lie – Boola-Boola 1001 Ex £500 SOLD (What a tune, outstanding crossover dancer that gets better with age, available here on the local Oakland, CA release. Some light marks on the vinyl so Ex visually, but no effect on an Ex+ play. Feint trace of a signature on the top label at 10-11 o’clock) Keni Lewis – What’s her name – Buddah 191 M- £300 (Another crossover winner on a Washington DC release from a talented fella who has remarkably served some time with 2 Shrine label groups no less, the Cautions and Enjoyables, and then the Chancellors on Cap City. Wow what a transition from those 60’s barn stormers to the less frantic 1970 groove) Universal Minds – A chance at love / I betcha’ – Charles 1229 Ex+ £150 SOLD (I think the label is related to Charles Hodges, who recorded on NYs Genuine Records, as did the amazing Mr Soul / Al Scott. All labels point to Mac Avery Music publishing company. 2 cracking sides, ‘A chance’ is strong crossover, and ‘Betcha’ a grower on the low rider scene) 21st Century – Coming right back / Shadow of a memory – DOT 17190 WD Ex £350 SOLD (What a double sider this, always been a firm favourite, classy male vocals a major label release after the local on Noel. Some very light feedback, not cue burn, at the start of both sides but otherwise 2 completely compelling dancers, oozing classy distinctive male vocals) Family of Eve – I want to be loved by you / Please be truthful – Full Sail 751 WD M- £500 (Modern soul combo from Pittsburgh, PA with a reputation for being, apparently, the longest running group in the region. Unusual double sider in that both sides have very strong lead singers, male on “Loved”, female on “Truthful”, what a great mix. Blue vinyl release) Bob & Gene – I really really love you – Mo-Do 104 Ex £1200 SOLD (What’s not nice to like about this Buffalo, NY duo of Bobby Nunn and Eugene Coplin, who started young, taking advantage of Nunn seniors own record label. “Sailboat” on 108 still does it for me, but I gotta say there’s a reason this groups output has filled dance floors in recent years, catchy arrangements, unique vocals, quirky lyrics, low-fi recording, obscure label, all key features of collecting Northern. Vinyl is visually Ex-, but it plays much better, tiny heat damage on edge does not affect play) Willie Kendrick – Change your ways / What’s that on your finger – RCA 9212 WD M- £525 (Double bubble here with 2 fantastic sides from the treasure trove that is the Pied Piper stable, “Change” the uptempo R&B tinged Northern dancer, and the stunningly emotive beat ballad “Finger”, you couldn’t want for 2 better sides and at the opposite end of the spectrum on a single slab of vinyl. A masterpiece on the scene) Ellie Greenwich – Baby – Red Bird 10034 M- £450 SOLD (The collective of Red Bird, Blue Cat, Daisy and Tiger labels were stacked full of Northern gems often influenced by Leiber & Stoller guiding a raft of girl groups and individual female artists to counter Phil Spector’s ‘Wall of Sound’, but the suite of labels were also graced by the likes of the Ad-Libs, Sidney Barnes, Charles Brandy and Eddie Jacobs serving up Northern monsters. Here we have the harder and much more attractive yellow stock copy of this in-vogue dreamy femme dancer in lovely Ex+ condition) Specials – I can’t find another – Satch 515 M- £500 (South side Chicago group with 3 known late 60s releases on a label with a numbering system starting oddly at 512, ending at 515 and no apparent 513! Maybe there’s one or more to come from the Specials, who also recorded as the Cassadons on Satch’s subsidiary Beltone, all linked by Fipa or Heno publishing and Johnny Finch on the credits. This copy is nice and clean, with an edge lift that does not affect play) Jimmy (Soul) Clark - Sweet darlin’ - Soul Hawk 001 Ex+ £125 SOLD (Detroit class, never fails to lift a listener. Red label but with SILVER text, minor edge lift does not affect play. Bargain!) Cody Black – I am particular – Wheelsville 107 Ex £300 SOLD (His hardest to come by and therefore least known beyond the bailiwick of Detroit aficionados. This 1966 girly backed track has Hanksy all over it, and more up-tempo than other releases Cody’s so well known for. There’s something appealing about the Wheelsville logo, a cornerstone of Detroit collecting. Top copy with only a couple of light minor marks that’s survived the normal mishandling of the motor city’s over eager record owners) PayPal by friends please or add 4%, or bank transfer. Postage: £4.45 – First Class Signed For (Insured to £50 at buyers risk on this list) £7.65 – Special Delivery (Fully insured up to £750) £8.65 – Special Delivery (Fully insured up to £1000) Overseas on Request ATB, Lee
