  1. One I'd forgetten about but was reminded on the Deepfunk radio thread is Edward Hamilton "Call Me" bw "I'm Gonna Love You". I have it on Jameco but I'm not sure of the status of this release. Is it a reissue, boot, legit release or what?. Always preferred "Call Me" to IGLY. Paul

Many people say that Betty Wright at Wigan was the best ever. Sorry, because it was Betty Wright at the hight of the Mecca/Wigan "wars", I went into Mr Ms until she was finished. Was she good? Saw the O'Jays and Bunny Sigler at Jacksonville colloseum in 1978 along with about 50,000 other people. I think I was the only one shouting for "Working On Your Case", "I Dig Your Act", "Girl Don't Make Me Wait" etc.....Didn't sing any of them. Good gig though. Paul

First allnighter for 5 years at the Top Of The World Staffs to see Gene Chandler. Expecting "Get Down", "Duke Of Earl", "Groovy Situation", crap gear and not much else. He ended up doing most of his "Northern" sounds and to cap it all a handfull of dex. Also verballed with Pete Lawson for a couple of hours. The last time I saw him. all in all, a good night. Maybe not the best live act but memorable. Paul
  4. Yes I found a copy at a junk shop years ago I don't know what was worse, the record or me at the time thinking it may be a long lost soulful version of the Baltimore & Ohio Marching Band Paul
  5. I always preferred their other one, "Just Like Duramine and Duraphet" Paul
  6. I did hear that Barry Manalow It's A Miracle was played in the late 70s anyone remember. Someone gave my sister a tape years ago with some good stuff on it and a few dodgy tracks. I found a few copies of one of the tracks in a Junk shop all in mint condition and they have haunted me ever since. The track was "Toody" by Angels One Five on Pye.. Bloody Awful. I don't actually remember it being played. Does anyone else? Paul
  7. I also saw the play on Saturday and thoroughly enjoyed it. This was the second time, as I went to Southampton last year. Generally, I thought that it was well written and caught a lot of the feel and attitudes of the scene and the Casino goers. There were a few thoughts I had about it all being only about Saturday and Wigan. Personally I went to a venue most nights of the week like Leyland Public Hall on Monday, Burscough FC on Tuesday, Wigan Wednesday and Friday and Aughton or St Helens on Thursday, also fitting in Places like Samanthas Blackpool Mecca Whitchurch etc at various times. I ended up Joining the Navy in 76 for a rest!. For many people in the whole scene it certainly was a way of life, not just for Saturday. Back to the play, I thought the lead character was better this year than last, and I was impressed in the way the actors got the dancing pretty much right. My sister also a Station Rd veteran came down to see it and definately thought it was worth the trip from South Wales. We both shed a tear at the end. Paul PS I never used to call my scooter a "chair"
  8. Agree with the Seven Souls, excellent. The scoot is an LI 125. Panels, mudguard are standard, but with front dampers and a 175 kit. Paul
  9. It proves that rarety doesn't really matter with "Please let Me In", "Don't Be Sore At Me" and "I Can't Make It Anymore" being amongst the favourites. The rarety of sounds was usefull in the old days to maintain the exclusivity of the scene and individual clubs within it. Nowadays the scene remains exclusive because it is almost like a large secret club with people either choosing to be into it or not. And there is now a huge list of good sounds discovered in the last 40 years, so there should be no reason to play substandard tracks just because they are rare.(or anything recorded after midnight on the 31 December 1969 eh Pete. ) Paul
  10. Got to be one I used in the old thread Spyder Turner " I Can't Make It Anymore" Paul
  11. On "Sounds Of The 60s" on the radio on Saturday they played Georgie Fames Version of The Spinners "Sweet Thing". Same as above . A reasonable version but with no feeling. Paul
  12. Went to Va Vas for my first alnighter and while on the dance floor I felt what I thought was warm water hitting me. On looking round I saw this old bloke with a pornstar 'tache, spinning incredibly fast causing his sweat to fly off horizontally. Mmm nice. Found out later it was the legendary Booper. Great dancer but at the time, rumour had it that he may have been as old as 30 !!!! Whenever I try to spin nowadays it is usually in the dining room after consuming lots of alcohol and I usually end up in a snotty heap across the table. Paul
  13. Excellent Dan, They think I'm mad, having just arrived at work and now in tears of laughter. Cheers for brightening my day. Paul
  14. I think stranger was a New York production though she was probably going out with an english monkey at the time. Paul
  15. Chris, I'll try, its my first time The Rocky roberts is the B side to "Stasera Mi Buito" theme to the tv show "Sabato Sera" spelling is probably wrong as I haven't looked at the record for a while. Both tracks are old "Northern" Favourites. Paul

Paul
  17. Did the same thing at a youth club in the early 73 when I spun the record in the air, my seat tipped back, the record hit the floor and the chair leg came back down straight onto the vinyl. Fortunately it was only Bob Kuban "The Cheater" on UK Bell, but as a 14 year old I was pretty upset. I have got over it now. Paul
  18. Just one of those white sounds played on the Northern scene years ago. The band are from Barrow In Furness apparently and also recorded a substandard version of One In A Million. BTW anyone know what the Tiffanies went for? I nearly put one on ebay last year, but thought it probably wouldn't reach what I would want for it. Paul
  19. Hows about Los Canarios "Get On Your Knees" was spanish. Also, what's the story with Rocky Roberts on Duramine-oops Durium. An Italian release as a TV theme, but was it US or Italian in origin? Paul

I bought all three when they came out. Must have been about 72. A good way to start collecting "Northern". I've still got them. Paul

Now come on Steve, the best gear in the world wouldn't make Gary Lewis sound good. I remember hearing scandal about His dad Jerry Lewis beating his kids. You could see his point. I Thought it was a pity it didn't stop Gary being a "musician"(and as for "This Diamond Ring")................. Paul
  24. Heard this a couple of times and loved it. Wouldn't buy it though, it was made after midnight on 31 Dec 1969 Anyone got a sound file? Paul
  25. Driving along yesterday listening to the radio and it was played, "Indiana Wants Me" R Dean Taylor. Not the worst but terrible. Paul
