One night last week I bobbed over to see my old mate Craig Butler to try and talk him into buying some records he didn't know he wanted. He was flicking through a DVD that had just arrived from Kev Fev in Norwich. The quality was a touch on the grainy side but we marveled at seeing The New Yorkers perform "Ain't that news" and Tommy Turner of El Bam fame singing away as casual as you like. Then it sorta dawned on me later - and you know how we soul boys love to make lists - what are the main 'must buy' DVD compilations? Did all major US cities at that time host some sort of 'new music for the hip young kids' type TV programmes that went out on cable I believe? Or was it just a handful of specialist music on TV shows that were spread out, dotted about all over the states but because they were broadcast via cable anybody could pick it no matter where you lived. Some names have just sprung into my mind such as "Bandstand" and "It's The Beat"......but don't quote me on that. It really is amazing to see some of the artists we revere performing as teenagers their latest up and coming hit single or so they hoped. And yet despite the countless hours and hours of broadcast the market doesn't seem to be awash with these compilations. Is it because purely and simply only a small percentage of the precious footage has survived over the years? Maybe a lot of footage wasn't deemed important enough in say the seventies and was simply erased or taped over or lost? Didn't a similar thing happen over here in the UK to early episodes of Top Of The Pops that were unbelievably taped over. Didn't Morecambe & Wise shows suffer a similar fate? Come on please reply and tell me more about these shows perhaps from people that collect these DVDs. Derek

Cliff being Cliff he didn’t need much persuading at all and soon trotted over the windswept Pennines armed every time with boundless enthusiasm and bundles of the rarest soul. Each time en route he stopped to pick up Craig Butler in deepest Brighouse and we three wise men laughed and giggled our way through an hours show. It's rumoured Santa Claus once said 'So much music so little time' (or summat vaguely similar......) I only wish he'd left me a few more pairs of ears under the Christmas tree. However can you think of any artists and/or labels that haven't had any sort of CD compilation release yet? A few I've often wondered about which are: Chuck Bernard (covering all his Zodiac releases onwards) Lee Moses (His Dynamo & Musicor releases to start with) Fantastic Four (Ric Tic to Motown period) Way Out label (everything) Saru label (Out Of Sights etc) Ovide label (everything) I admit though I haven't done any google leg work investigating any of these above. Hey up Julian - Hot Lead was a Dewsbury, West Yorkshire based Reggae label from the early 1970's. Most if not all of the recordings were done at King Street Studios in Huddersfield. I found a handful of 45s on this label a few years ago and not found any since. Derek After a number of singles on various Pama labels, Ian Smith set up a tiny UK reggae label (Shades) in 1971, with just two releases. Both singles were by his house band - The Inner Mind, one of the very few white Reggae bands at that time. He soon launched his Hot Lead label out of Dewsbury, West Yorkshire in 1972. Blimey had forgotten just how wonderfully floaty "Going out of my mind" is and wow quite simply a fabulous piece of soul music. Pretty certain a mate of mine still has a Chris Bartley acetate which he bought and played a bit at the Bradford Queens Hall allnighters early nineties. However an alarm bell is ringing somewhere in the back of my mind as the above title doesn't ring a bell. He offered it to me a few years ago for a rather large amount of folding. However I was told at the time there were a few acetates of it knocking about. Was the word "Sunshine" in the title? Better text him now to clear the foggg.... Derek

Which DJ is credited to first playing and making "Like my love for you" the popular track we always hoped it would be? Was it covered up? And can anybody remember what as? What time period are we talking about and which club did it become massive at? Derek

I know it's a bit of an obvious question but is/was this group related to the one that cut the rather excellent "Charade" on Note? Yes I know they both share the same group name.......and the releases are a few years apart. Geographical wise might rule it out as Mandingo was Ohio based whilst Note frequented Atlanta, Georgia. Thought I best ask whilst the question was fresh in my mind. Derek

Pretty certain this subject has been dissected many times before but a cursory run through soul source and the internet beyond didn't show up anything. The UK Grapevine label run by John Anderson of Soul Bowl, Kings Lynn fame released 49 singles between the years 1977 - 1980. I personally bought many of them as new releases from Woods record store in Bradford at the time. However I can distinctly recall seeing Kev Joss (a well known geezer from the North East at the time) carrying summat like a Grapevine pre-release white label promo acetate with hand written credits - might have even been 10" or single sided? - across the record bar of a well known club in Wigan. I was immediately impressed and slightly jealous. Has anybody got any label scans to help ease my curious mind. Does anybody know (or seen a list of) which Grapevine releases got this pre-release acetate treatment? Numbers wise I suspect only a couple o' dozen of each acetate were made and distributed out to influential taste makers of the day. Derek

I can see exactly where you're coming from on this Pete but at the risk of me sounding very naive there is the slim, outside chance that he or his mate (or between them) have/has multiple copies of said records and the seller had just re-used the same scan. File under long time tape-swoppers favourite. On virtually every other tape that dropped through my door during the nineties this was on it. And rightly so.
