  1. Andy - no mate - that's not right ... I think you mean Harold Wilson - Labour Party Leader - twice Prime Minister of the UK - and Lord Wilson of Rievaulx Cheers Richard
  2. Hi Roger Yes, I believe you are right in that these are just different variations from pressing plants across the US which made the records across at the original time of release. That said, there may well have been 're-pressings', but still at the original time of release as a record took off and 'broke' in different parts of the US (music was very regional/local in those days as we know). There are some Karen/Carla releases which demonstrate this quite clearly (e.g. Capitols - Cool Jerk) where there was a local Detroit release, but then several different regional/national releases which were pressed quickly when the record went big - so local first, then nationally distributed ATCO versions. So basically, yes I think these are all originals, around at the same time, but some records may have been broken slightly earlier or later in some regions of the US. The Karen/Carla labels seem especially typical of this, with many variations of some releases (some quite rare and not seen that often). I have quite few different variations in my collection of some of these Karen/Carla 45s. Just can't help buying them Cheers Richard
  3. Just found this on a YouTube post: Hi, I am that Bob Wilson, thanks for digging my record. This was cut in Nashville in 1966 and was the other side of After Hours. For¯»¿ some background on this record check out The B Side Bob Wilson - In The Midnight Hour. I am at studiopiano@yahoo.com Someone could maybe email him and let him know how well liked his record is here on the Northern Soul scene Is this the same or different to the Bob Wilson on Ric-Tic? Have always wondered but never asked. Cheers Richard
  4. Thanks Roger Definitely supports the case that the Carla release came first - and also that 'I've Been Fooled Before' was the a-side, with 'Almost' on the flip. Cheers Richard
  5. Thanks Matt - excellent info Thanks Roger great stuff Out of interest - what are the matrix numbers of the other sides - in case the're might be further clues in those (probably not)? Cheers Richard
  6. Anyone know which of the releases of Jimmy Delphs "Almost" came out fist please? Jimmy Delphs - Almost/I've Been Fooled Before (Carla 2535) Jimmy Delphs - Almost/Don't Sign The Paper Baby (Karen1538) The Carla release seems a little harder than the Karen one - although both are pretty common. Cheers Richard
  7. Thanks very much for the great info and scans Chalky, Pete and John Excellent stuff Here is the Patty Charles version of 'Never Say No' Cheers Richard Patty Charles - Never Say No (Hot 101 B X) https://soundcloud.com/user1502162/patty-charles-never-say-no-hot
  8. Cheers for the info Steve The more I play this one the more I like it. Cheers Richard
  9. Hi Chalky Yes, good idea mate Would one of the Mods mind moving this whole thread over please? Otherwise, I will re-post in a couple of days. Cheers Richard
  10. Anyone got any recording/session info on this one please? Recording dates, which studio, which session musicians etc. Any info gratefully received Cheers Richard
  11. Have you heard OWEN & PAUL & THE DRIFTERS - DEAR MOM / DEAR MOM PART.2. Giant 704 - it's awful - I defy anyone to like that one Cheers Richard
  12. Here's a soundfile of the long version with the haunting, atmospheric intro - timed at 2:58 (off a demo) Cheers Richard https://soundcloud.com/user1502162/cynthia-imaginations-love-is
  13. Sorry this is off topic and it's not intended to be negative or derogatory in any way - but I just happened to watch Ross Kemp on Gangs on TV the other night and they featured Krakow - with lots of fairly serious football and right-wing related gang violence. Just wondered if there was any real truth in it - or is it just sensationalised TV rubbish? Before I start sounding quite unworldly - I have travelled and worked quite extensively around the globe - never been to Poland unfortunately, but I have been to the likes of Latvia, Lithiania, Estonia, Hungary, Belarus, Ukraine, Russia as far east as Siberia etc. and been to some fairly 'edgy' places. Cheers Richard
  14. What are the votes looking like now Pete - worth an update? Both fabulous records IMO and the Detroit Executives is the best group name by a mile - even though the Mighty Lovers/Ideals is a better song Cheers Richard
  15. You're absolutely right Pete - based on soul content rather than nostalgia content ;-) Cheers Richard
  16. Thanks for the feedback guys Did they do anhything else do you know? Cheers Richard
  17. Billy Think you should really have both and mix one into the other - Coo off first mixed into (The) Might Lover (just spotted the titles on the Ideals and the Mighty Lovers are different) - either Boo-Ga-Loo version would do Cheers Richard
  18. Ok mate - would have been surprised if it had been the case at all - but thanks for clarifying. Cheers Richard
  19. Neil Can't see your comments mate. Richard
  20. Although I'm not a venue-goer these days, it's sad to hear that a local venue in my town is closing - especially due to politics around original vinyl. It would be OVO only in my book. I agree you should stick to your guns mate and look for support from elsewhere if you need it. Is this local rivalry between Smooth Soul and Sweet Soul by any chance? If so, what's all that about? Think you should stick to your principles on this one and don't let the b@st@rds grind you down. Cheers Richard
  21. Just googled this and found somethingfrom February 2010 saying Soul Sam had been playing this - don't know if that's true or not. Anyone know anything about this artist or 45 please? Cheers Richard
  22. Thanks John for clarifying. Is the flipside of Joan Duvalle on Hot 'Never Say No' as with Patty Charles please? If so, presumably it is also a different mix? Cheers Richard
  23. Not sure Chalky - have checked what I have here including Keith's book but haven't turned anything up as yet - maybe Keith or Robb K might know? On the Patty Charles version Andre Williams is credited as song writer on both sides. The production is by B&W Productions, and publishing by Draplay Music Pub. Not sure on correct spelling of her name on the Hot release either. Great - thanks very much for the sound file Here's the Patty Charles version so people can compare. The release number is HOT 101-A X so presumably the 'X' indicates this was a second (re)release of the song? Cheers Richard Patty Charles - (Love Is Like A) Holiday (Hot 101 A X) https://soundcloud.com/user1502162/patty-charles-love-is-like-a
  24. My first hearing of 'Mighty Lover' by The Mighty Lovers was actually on the radio. As a kid (late 70s) I used to tune into Dave Evision's Northern Soul spot on Radio Derby - with the signal dipping in and out badly at times as it was broadcast on AM I think - and I was in Leicestershire! Dave's regular guest spot was on Terry Christian's show - remember him? I heard some fantastic songs for the first time on Dave's radio spot and the Mighty Lovers was one of the best Others I still remember hearing first there (and still love) were Lou Courtney - Trying To Find My Woman (Buddah); Howard Tate - Baby I Love You (Verve); Linda Jones & Whatnauts - I'm So Glad I Found You (Stang); Fantastics - Me And You (Sound Stage 7) - brilliant stuff!!! Cheers Richard
  25. Yes, they were Fabulous!! Got all their stuff and would not be without it. This is one of my all time favourites - a cover of Curtis Mayfield's (Impressions) "I've Been Trying" - a much covered song but this for me is one of the best versions. Cheers Richard Fabulous Peps - I've Been Trying (Wee 3 1001 A) https://soundcloud.com/user1502162/fabulous-peps-ive-been-trying
