Record Labels A-z
Has anyone got or ever seen a demo of Chubby Checker Discotheque on Britsish CP?

Record Labels A-z
Is the Mary Love a demo on a white label then? Assume we're talking about Bitter into sweet. The only UK copy I've seen was on King (Blue-ish)

Record Labels A-z
Ah yes! Too bad SK&F fried my memory cells!

Record Labels A-z
Attack was my fave ska label (i think! multi coloured? like an explosion in a paint factory?) Doctor Bird label brings back memories

Record Labels A-z
Me too - especially British ones.

Record Labels A-z
It was the island version I was thinking of. Back around 1970 it introduced me to so many good things like Phil Upchurch, Jimmy McGriff etc. British Sue was a strange label wasn't it? Lots of class and more than a few oddities - Effie Smith anyone? Bit like Action in that respect. I suppose the closest they came to a hit was Harlem Shuffle?

Record Labels A-z
this thread has gone rather quiet - has Pete played some kind of trump card? I know its a fab record but is it completely off the scale of rare? I have no idea.

Record Labels A-z
Yeah, me too. A Wheel favourite I believe and one of the best tracks on the Sue Story compilation - remember that?

Record Labels A-z
Pete - What's the story on the Robert Parker ? Is it Australian or something?

Gorgeous. I just lurve Columbia Okeh demo's. Has anybody got any British Cameo Parkway demo's to post? I know they are a bit plain in design compared to some, but there are so many that I've never seen anywhere, and though I had a pretty fair Britsish collection myself once, I never did own a Cameo demo.

A-z Of Soul Stars
Confident on this one. It's gotta be the Boystown Gang, right?

What Do People Think About Hit & Runners
Welcome to you too Gary! As for you Pete, your diplomatic skills have already been well noted here in Kidderminster! I'm somewhat trenchant in my views too ('73 was the best year, crossover = supper club soul! etc!)

What Do People Think About Hit & Runners
For myself I think it's great when new members come in with a burst of energy and lots of posts. After my long break from the scene, I had a zillion questions about things I'd missed. A warm welcome to ya Pete.

What Would You Have For Your Send Off?
Pete & Soul Girl - great taste on the Lulu song. One of my all time fave pop records along with Pet's C's Downtown.

How Would You Feel
True. After a break from the scene of over 20 years, my perspective has been spouted often enough on this board. If the Mello Souls is the greatest discovery of the last few years, then I'm afraid you're right. The peak was '73. The flip side of that coin is that we were spoiled; awesome records like Spyder Turner couldn't get a spin simply because it was on market stalls at a quid. At least these days all oldies are somewhat equal.

Northern Doowop
How about The Dynamics "Misery" ? Does that count?
-
Soulful Slowies
You better go - Derek Martin Even thinking about this song gives me goosebumps. So good, I can't even bear to play it, just in case I like it less than the last time.

Two Left Feets
Towanda Barnes was a challenging dancer even when I was 16. Now it'd be a bloody miracle!
-
Brown Bombers
Prefer the other version by The Two Tone Pinks ;-) Super rare in '73 and never seen thsese days
-
Dean Parrish - Determination
I've never seen this on an American label. (I know, I don't get out much!) What was it on?
-
Determination
I've puzzzled on this one more than once. It's not clear is it? Think I'd rather not know for sure, coz I suspect it may be a "musical theatre type lyric" concerning sods of earth! While we're on the subject will somebody, anybody, tell me what Roy Handy is doing singing about Fish and Chips in the classic "Baby that's a groove" ? Listen for yourself; it's in the first verse - Click here for Roy Handy I like to think he made a secret journey to The Wheel, sampled our national dish, then wrote a killer groove to sing it's praises just for the in crowd at Whitworth Street.

The Great - Not The Merely Mediocre
I remember when Johnny Taylor's "Friday Night" was a big sound. Only the hip knew that it was the flip to "Steal Away" (?) which had not been deleted on UK Stax. My Brother in Law bought a box of 25 at 10 bob each and flogged 'em out at 3 times the price. Simpler times. Talking of Jazz, I bet that Cal Tjader thing blew you away then!?
