Help! With 70S Soul/funk
EXACTLY! that happened the first week. thought i would blow their doors off with rare stuff, but they just politely nodded (and got bored after a bit). honestly, the two best responses i've got so far were to: Gwen McCrae - 'been so long' and Superlatives - 'i don't know how to say i love you (don't walk away)'. strange! and the coolest request (one of the few that i actually had) was darrell banks 'our love is in pocket'! for an old fella from flint michigan! that was cool.

Help! With 70S Soul/funk
ok. i have been spinning the last few weekends at sunday BBQs here in sunny california. the venue is a VFW hall (veterans of foreign wars - this hall is all retired black servicemen in their 40s-60s). my thing is 1960s soul (mostly northern, i guess, and what you brits call 'club soul', ). detroit - philly - new york, etc and heavy on the girl groups and classy urban soul (strings, etc). the crowd at the VFW has been VERY gracious and appreciative - EXCEPT that i am getting increasing requests for 'more 70s' and 'more funky'. some things i have played (from the very few tracks i have that fit either of these categories) and that have gone over well are: margie hendrix - jim dandy alex brown - love really hurts without you syl johnson - same kind of thing sweet inspirations - them boys ural thomas - can you dig it wasters - don't stop raelettes - come get it i got it young hearts - get yourself together so... can some early 70s experts give me some advice on records similar to these that might please these folks (and won't bankrupt me!!)??? thanks! (maybe sticking to 1970-75 as i can't deal with anything later than that myself!) thanks!

Joan Moody
"we must be doing something right" has always been a fave. recently got "music to my ears/lend a helping heart" and LOVE both sides. i think her delivery is just in a realm all its own: super classy and urbane - yet soulful. she's one of those artists who seems (to my uncultured ears) like she might have had classical/operatic vocal training. does anyone know anything about her career/life? discography? or pics? i would love a picture of her!

String Musicians In Soul Music
awesome link! i wonder what those musicians were thinking: "this is a lot of fun!" "i went to julliard for this?" "gosh, i am going to start listening to more soul" "this is silly...but an easy paycheck" "???" what do you think?

Paying Twice For Your Treasured Records?
point taken, as the posting was a joke - but a bittersweet one at that. the US is in a serious existential crisis. modern provision of government social services has moved far beyond anything intended by our founding fathers (even though these types of service provisions by the state - such as health care - may seem innocuous to a European) . So, beyond my personal opinion, (which is certainly and obviously freaked out) current US policy constitutes a radical departure for our country from its Jeffersonian (and even its Hamiltonian and Madisonian) roots.

Remember Me?

Paying Twice For Your Treasured Records?
As an American, something as ridiculous as this would not surprise me at all. The USA has become a communist dictatorship. Good thing we at least all have guns! Ha ha ha - I would stack these tax collectors' bodies on my front lawn. They will have to pry my 45s from my cold dead hands! Don't tread on me!

String Musicians In Soul Music
thanks for all your inputs. learning a bunch. maybe these string musicians will need their own movie called "standing in the shadow of the funk brothers"!

Rip - Alex Chilton
i agree. the thing that kills me about these clips from the 60s is the crowd. i am sure that these kids have no idea how lucky they are to see these performances... but do you see the slack jawed half-wit in the video!? (the kid drooling on himself in a coma at time :17 and again at :55) its always the way! jackie wilson or gene chandler performing something fierce and a crowd of pimply faced white teens barely able to summon the enthusiasm for lackluster (and off time) finger-snapping? aaaagh!!

String Musicians In Soul Music
so... there are a lot of awesome string arrangements in soul. especially from detroit and new york. who were these folks? were they orchestras that were simply brought in on a recording-by-recording basis? longer contracts? i grew up in a mostly black neighborhood in downtown Cincinnati (i know its not detroit, but hey, king records studio was just a few blocks from my house) and i never saw any black kids with violins! so how were these arrangements normally made? anyone know?

Dealers Who Add "complementary" Freebies In Ebay Orders
has this been happening to anyone else? i've been getting ebay orders in the mail and the seller has added one or two extra free records! they are not rare - usually something they clearly could not sell, but also not trashed garbage. this is not all from the same seller, either! lately i've received (free) nice copies of: baby dave cortez - let it be me contours - do you love me garnet mimms - cry baby isley bros - its your thing its nice because i usually don't buy these types of records, but when I DJ they are sometimes requested. just wondered if this has always gone on?

Record Grading
i got a mint copy of "smile" by clara ward on verve for a dollar! was so excited until i tried to play it. the whole record (label and grooves) were SO off center from the hole that it sounded like a really bad warp! my only recourse was to put it on the turntable without the 45 adapter and let the table spin. then i poked it and eyeballed it until it was approximately centered. a pain when DJ-ing, but its such a nice song it is worth it!

Do Any Tunes Make You Cry
"dry your eyes" by brenda and the tabs. always makes me choke up. go ahead and make fun!

Am I Missing Something?
well awesome! i DJ for older black folks here in california and they love this sort of down-homey R&B "chitlin" stuff (just as they tend to dislike the slick motown/string arrangement stuff). so this record ("who do you love" side) has really gone over well!

Am I Missing Something?

Little Johnny Taylor Galaxy 739
Ok, so i just got a copy of Galaxy 739 - Little Johnny Taylor "One More Chance / Looking At The Future". the strange thing is that the "looking at the future"side sounds like it was recorded in mono, but then is pressed on the record as only the left channel with the right channel empty. is that in every copy? anyone know?
