Soul Scene Villains
 Hi All ..First of all thanks for the Feedback, and although I am right , I always accept that my opinion may differ from others, and it is worth noting that History is just an opinion put foreword by any individual who wants to mention the importance of an event or a period of time, and euphoric recall distorts the validity of an event, hence the police tend to look for as many independent witness's as possible if the intend to prosecute. And it is down to the reader to either accept the reading as the truth or is second hand sensationalism?. The very fact that I state that the issue of WEST HAM UNITED as being the true home of the BOVVER BOY, BOOT BOY is fact as the BB stands for Borstal Boy "BB" the term SKINHEAD to my ears, was a northern expression that some journalist used to describe the Whitson Bank Holiday 1969, I had never herd it before then, to describe the latent mods of the 60ts, the word annoys me far more than I can express in this post, less to say the word congers up some late 70ts punks with right wing values that would have received a kick in, back in 69 as there maladjusted outlook was a product of lack of imagination, trying to invent the wheel while on EVO is not what the issue is about at all, In my piece on this three, I attempted to answer the question on Villon's who established the soul scene, and later our scene the original Norther Soul Scene, and to make my point I drew reference to a parallel sub culture that is the only surviver along with our scene, the football fan along with all the obsessive behavior that is attached to it, There is a saying in London "never drink in a Public Bar in a strange Manor" as this is so true especially in the late 60ts early 70ts, at a time when most City centerers where of limits to strangers, whether you went to the early clubs or not, they were always in places where you would never normally spend Saturday night, And for the locals it gave them a monopoly on how things were run! If it had not been for the BBs the term "streetwise" might never come about, as trust me, in the early days of Rare Soul Clubs or the Soho Scene, especially if like me intended to sell Dubes, you had to be able to handle a situation and be forceful, especially if the place was profitable, as you had to go back in there again or hand it all over to a nobody? (to this day I can remember the names of those people who pulled a fast one on the boys from the South who took the gear to the Torch & Wigan) and I know if you went to the TORCH you will recall 2 lads from Luton getting rolled in the bogs again the expression from London comes to mind "Don't shit the bed and then sleep in it" or "don't shit on your Manor" as it is down right not done, " years ago I wrote "MORE THAN SKIN DEEP" a sort of account of different bits of my life, to put right some of the crap thats talked about the youth sub cultures, as what I have read & seen is always incorrect or narrated by someone who was to young, however these accounts have become History, and to make my point if I said something like "the best and most soulful night at Wigan Casino was the Night Wigans Ovation sang Superlove?" as to the football point! I no that WHUFC supporters did not invent violence in 69, what I stated the concept of a united firm in a uniform was a product from WHUFC & MFC and by the time it had spread to the Midlands and the North as a sub culture the style had changed, to me and most Londoners my experience of the north an it's gangs from the time, the resembled grebes and Teddy boys in hobnail Pit Boots and Donkey Jackets all of them seem to be much older than the average age of the West Ham Boot Boys ( 15 to 18 year olds) that is my point, PLUS Don't confuse my views on WHUFC with all that dribble from supporters of Cass Pennant? ICF he may be? but he was not a part of the "SPIRIT OF 69" nor were the balding men who at the age of 40 something in the football tops (twats the lot of them) we were Kids growing up, most of these kind of people are NONCES

What Is Known About These
Hi All ...cheers for input info, I have also another Barry Smith in a yellow label SHANE a dreadful version of Tom Jones Hit "it's not unusual", now i have seen a US copy it takes the edge of the DISK, but if you collect the island & sue label from start to finish along with the unreleased stuff, if it exists it will be in this format and not a white label, for some reason i have never got round to completing the full PEOPLE label, they put out some nice LPs and like Con-tempo the 12" and LPs are hard to get now, Some records are just so elusive to the completest, this is a good example, as to it's value. i ain't got a clue as I say this is a completest record that just has the right sound for to-days taste, perhaps Ranking Johnny may want it to auction it for me?? :ph34r:DAVE

What Is Known About These
Hi All ... Can anybody tell me anything about the unreleased PEOPLE 119 Barry Smith acetate, and was the B side ever issued? as the A side has PT 1 & PT 2 on the US release, The PAGE ONE DEMO is a classic and sounds great to my (I love UK Northern) ears, it take a couple of plays to turn it from a run of the mill 6ts POP record to find a brilliant Norther Record with CLASS, anyone (cant do sound clips) DAVE KIL

Soul Scene Villains
HI ALL.... Sorry to say but yes it was, in fact far to common, You must take note, that our RARE SOUL SCENE did not just happen over night, It was hatched and nurtured from Violent Youth Sub Cultures of the 60ts when it was common place for young people to be Territorial, this was most notable at Football matches where there was always a Territorial thing for decades but with the passing of time the decade became one full of anger (agro!) as the Sub cult's widened and many kids had grown up with the Grey days of the 50s, by the late 60s the word teenager meant much more than it did in the 50s with it's 2 sub cultures of Teddy Boys and Beatniks, although the roots of our scene can be traced back that far, with the love of American music All night dancing and the experimental using of drugs like Cannabis & Bennie's (Benzedrine a Stimulant) being the most popular, As we entered the 1960s the modernist cult was an elitist sub culture style and nonchalance hand in hand, but not uncouth, once this sub culture developed and people in the know also rose in status, it was not by luck material wealth was the #1 pre-requisite to be a top MOD being elitist was and still is the desire, and as such it brings envy to be as popular, over 5 years 60 - 65 the MOD introduced such a way of being it was not just a cult it was a style to be imitated but with improvements , STYLE meant everything to my broth and sister who were original MODS, even when fighting my Brother had style even when head butting someone, The MODS of were Violent and Territorial common place were Dance Hall Fights on a Saturday night, I can clearly remember being hustle with the threat of violence for my watch in the toilets of the Flamingo, and it was the same at the Scene Tiles Rm Jam, Ricky Tick clubs California ROYAL, SRETHAM Lyceum, the MECCA Stevenage, if you were not known you were a target, and if you had a reputation you were targeted, even at te Wheel there was trouble, From 68 the younger MODS embraced the Saturday night kick in or the causing bovver with away supporters at football, my club WEST HAM UNITED FC & Millwall were the top clubs for gang warfare and the start of perhaps the most violent youth sub culture, the Bovver Boy (Skinhead) fashion started there in 68 and the Sub Culture spread quickly a nd peaked at West Ham Late 69 but in the midlands and the north it was still developing. If you look at photos of people who went to the Wheel in 1970 the Fashion is up to date with London but else where people were still getting a #1, As I stated our Scene comes from this moment of History and the Territorial thing carried on at least to the Jubilee when the mantle was handed to PUNK ROCK, However most people who are in the late 50s earl 60ts who attended and made the scene were capable of most things heavy, but for some reason that I still don't know? is why the the fraternal spirit come about on the SOUL SCENE? I f you want more info please ask and don't believe some of the crap written by people who were not thee?? I always sold the Proper STUFF DAVE KIL

This Record Definitely Doesn't Exist, (Or Does It) ?
Hi All .... Pete first of I think this article on the Volumes is well spoiling the thread?? it should be under it's own heading, as this is one of the better threads, I don't want to be the one to bring it to a premature end, as much as I find it fascinating, Quite clearly there is no rush, as I will do more research on it, but I am sure the record got a review in the music press at or near it.s release, but what it was in I really can't remember, as back then I was music mad with every mag I could get from ROLLING STONE TO PRIVATE EYE, i EVAN HAD EVERY ISSUE OF OZ, EVEN THE RARE ONE WITH THE LSD CORNER (CALIFORNIA SUNSHINE) TO THE PAPERS MELODY MAKER, NME, SOUNDS ALL GOT THROWN AWAY WHEN i LEFT HOME, SO THATS A LEAD TO BE CHECKED OUT. AS THE REVIEW MEANS WE ARE NOT WISHFUL THINKERS WITH STOL. AND I STILL HAVE A FEW CONTACTS, HOWEVER MY MATE JIM SILE'S A TOP COLLECTOR OF REGGAE AND UK SOUL, USED TO THINK IT EXISTED BUT NOW HE HAS SWITCHED TO, SURELY IT WOULD OF TURNED UP BY NOW CAMP, AND THERES QUITE A LOT OF THEM, Do you have to speak to anyone to get this section moved away from this thread?? ssshhhh! or I will turn the VOLUME UP! Problem With The Record, please Advise A.s.a.p
Hi All ... To reduce hiss on a record can be achieved, However this advise is not !00% and if record does not improve do not blame me? :- 1. always replace the needle after any incident, that might cause stylus ware, tip. if you are cleaning fluff from cartridge every 3 to 4 records replace and clean your records? 2. when you play the damaged disk, what channel is the his on or is it left or right side, 3. have you got a graphic equalizer and if so can you reduce the high tops of the peaks. if yes you may be able to try my method if you are unsure or unclear or the answer is no.well i would say hard Luck. as all methods of record restoration is based on skimming we don't know how to grow plastic yet??? 4. you will need ideally a dust bug with a cocktail stick fitted to the correct hight,to make the angle parallel to disk, DON'T GUESS! 5. METHOD always try out on rubbish records before attempting to do any thing on a rare record PLEASE, Start with the point of your wooden stick on the inside a nd work outward (that toward you) do up until the fade out, wipe down with meths & lint free rag, check to see if this has reduced the hiss, if yes, start from the center and play backwardly only. never go forewords and and wipe down before playing, you may need t add a gram or two above your temp pick up but make sure extra weight is not digging another hiss, i would suggest stop when you have tried 5 attempts, 6. this has worked well for me in the past hope it does for you. 7. if you do tamper around with labels or record wax, and the sell it. without informing the buyer, you need a kick in DAVE

This Record Definitely Doesn't Exist, (Or Does It) ?
HI ALL That right not quite sure what year JET STAR was 1st set up I would guess it was in late 67, or when he first got the rights to Bobby Paterson US JET STAR thats what the company is named after. it has always been the case especially in the music industry , to have several companies under a parent company in this case Jet star. if you notice at the start of the label/s history if he could and would put titles under the banner of Copy right Control. and only paid full dues to his mates (now & again} and hardly ever on JA stuff.:ph34r:DAVE

This Record Definitely Doesn't Exist, (Or Does It) ?
HI ALL ... RICK I HAVE THAT FANZINE, JUST A GLANCE AT IT TELLS YOU SOMETHING AIN'T RIGHT, HOWEVER IT MADE RUMBLES AT THE TIME, AND Mr T WHEEL, DID A GOOD JOB PRE HOME COMPUTERS, I PERONALY YEARS AGO WAS GOING TO CUT A DUB PLATE FROM A 3 TRACK AMPEX TAPE RECORDER WE GOT FROM ISLAND RECORDS IN 1975 AS WE USE TO DO WORK IN HARLSDON AT THE ROXY, IT WAS A REHEARSAL FOR BANDS TO RUN THROUGH THERE TOUR ACT, THATS THE TIME I GET MORE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE PALMER'S AND WHERE I NICKED A BOX OF PLATES WITH SOME LABELS? BUT DID NOT BOTHER, INSTEAD WE RECORDER THE BIG YINS FAV BAND THE TANNER HILL WEAVERS OVER A WHOLE STUDIO VERSION OF DIFFERENT BUSTER TAPES THAT WE GOT WITH THE RECORDER, MOST TRAX WERE AT LEAST 15 MIN LONG ON 3 TRACK , MIND YOU THE WEAVERS WERE GOOD?? This Record Definitely Doesn't Exist, (Or Does It) ?
Hi All .....How much I want to agree with Pete and many other collectors who ave given up on the whereabouts of the DISC, After all you say it should of turned up by now?? Why should it of turned up by now, if the evidence states otherwise, The information indicated that for some reason the Palmer's got rid of them and have stayed tight lipped as to why, we can assume it was some kind of tax dodge, adding to that fact, is as Pete points out, why not release the hit, well you could say that about most UK labels who had the release rights. Indeed why did so not release other IMPACT label records, Also to make my point did we not get a release from the Volumes on Philip's or does that not count, The Pama catalog which is on this thread, (was it your copy Pete?) was printed months later than the issue of the record, fact. and is the official PAMA/JETSTAR COPY, Not a list of someone record collection, it is the company's catalog, and the pages indicate the records that were not issued at that time, So why would the phantom disc be in it? Now we know that like Trojan thee was quite a few blanks and pre release disc's made that did not get issued officially, Laurel Aitkin being a good example of this with the NU-BEAT[sic] title NB 48. WE NO THAT EXISTS, And theres other examples, The best example of which is the missing greatest hits LP.. having put out the PAMA, UNITY, GAS, CRAB, NU-BEAT, WHY DID THEY NOT DO ESCORT??? This LP does not Exist, Fact,However last year the cover and full track listing showed up and sold on EBay for £400 I think, the point being is that like the VOLUMES top collectors have said exactly the same about it as is said about our missing record, but if that has shown up, there is hope the VOLUMES will? My conclusion is this, for far to long it seems thee has only been a half hearted attempt to find a copy, most people relying on luck that one day they will stumble upon it? then there is the mystery that confuses the issue about the Palmer's and there non appiontment to talk. As mentioned how many were pressed is also important a run of 30 was the pre release norm for 1 st run, then you have the catalog with it in why if it was not released? the missing LP ESCORT HITS turning up 40 years late?? And the most important thing to me is the fact I have seen it, and so have others, but no sighting of it after 1972?/ It needs investigating properly, and to my knowledge this has not been done, I would say it is in the record cases of some Sound Men from that period of time, tucked away, I know how impossible it is to get into a Jamaican record box, it is easy to wait for them to die, so if you deduct how many wee made from how many destroyed it leaves you with the number given out . at a guess it.s under 5, that's why you have not seen it DAVE

The Ringleaders - Help With Value
Hi All...I know what I'm gonna say about the Ringleaders, one of my all time greats! as I have said it 4 times already, my last copy tat I got from Dave Shaw for £3 I sold to TOP Midlands Collector DJ TED M for £6, he was happy and I was blocked & p**said. great record Demo are hard,SOUL BOWL copy if I remember right was £2.50 in early 76 it was much rarer in 73, and I cant place where or who used to play it as it was not until the mid 80's that the demand was there for it and in the 90's the prices went silly, Writing about it again makes me want it again anyone got a copy for swapping, don't do money no more as I ain't got any?? 45 And 12" Help
Hi All I would like to help you But!!, Like most people and for reasons that have concerned me, just for there exclusion, why is there no Price Guide for 12" & 10" records & dub plates, I have often wondered what I have left in the fields of ENGLAND as I have driven away from Car Boot Sales over the last 20 or so years, even straight foreword values would help? For example:- Skip Mahony - Janice - Underworld 12 UNDY 1a, is in my opinion the best and rarest version, yet it's never mentioned? yet the shorter 45 7" is, as is the us Sal Sol 7" copy and the 12" sometimes gets a plug, However not only do you get a short version it seems that the 7" copy is valued at least twice the price of the 12" now I am lucky to have both, and always play the full version, so why is the 7" copy worth more??? I hope you get a answer on you valuation, as for the 12" Janice it's worth about £30, if you are daft enough to follow the rare soul rules on how to value rare records, for many years before crossover & modern Soul, my point was aimed at rare LP's and to this day they are still looked down on, apart from SKA & REGGAE DAVE KIL

This Record Definitely Doesn't Exist, (Or Does It) ?
Hi All ..ian further to this mystery and one i can only speculate on, Is the whole PAMA set up JETSTAR (named after Bobby Patterson's LABEL) is one big gap that has been missing from the music industry, is the complete failure of the Palmer's to releasing product on a CD under the JETSTAR set up??? As the big answer to the Volumes will only be answered that way, PAMA LABEL was in the main a bootleg set up, with full support from JA Producers to get a 2nd bite of the pie, this is why you see COPYRIGHT CONTROL on most records on all labels, however because of legal issues, an investigation will be met with tight lips/// ... the VOLUMES does exist "no matter what the people say" DAVE

This Record Definitely Doesn't Exist, (Or Does It) ?

This Record Definitely Doesn't Exist, (Or Does It) ?
HI ALL I HAVE SAID IT MANY TIMES BEFORE THE VOLUMES DOES EXIST, I HAVE SEEN IT, IT WAS IN STEVENS RECORD SHOP LETCHWORTH, THIS IS WERE I GOT MY ACTION 45s AND MY REGGAE IN 68 - 72 AS A ISSUE KEITH MINSHALL SWEARERS BLIND HE HAD ONE IN STOCK WHEN IT DOES TURN UP? THE FULL STORY CAN THEN BE TOLD ON WHY THE BROTHERS DISPOSED OFF MANY COPIES, A SIMILAR OUTCOME ON HOW FEW RAY MERREL'S THERE IS, AND WHY THE SHELVES WERE BARE AT THE PRESIDENT WHERE HOUSE? THE PRE RELEASE WOULD BE THE US COPY WITH STICKER AND INFO AS I HAVE A FEW SOUL RELEASES ON PAMA THE ONLY DEMOS AND PRE RELEASE I HAVE ARE RECORDS BY THE CROWNS AND SKELETON A RECORDS SOMETIME IN GOLD AND RED. I MAYBE WRONG. BUT I AIN'T WRONG IT EXISTS ALL THE EVIDENCE IS THERE, BUT WERE THEY ARE AND WHY WE AIN'T SEEN ONE FOR MANY YEARS IS DOWN TO THE PALMAS OK! DAVE

Moses Smith Girl Across The Street
HI ALL. First off. loved Rick's piece of info, and is bang on with the correct info, the original copies from Chips, because of the price were all assumed to be bootlegs. as we now no this is not the case, in the same way James bounty prove yourself was not bootlegged until years a later, I once got a copy of Moses Smith and as stated had no matrix info, this is a counterfeit. very good but it will plays be snide even if you wait 10 years, original has matrix info as described, thats all you need to know. much rarer than it sells for because of the neg reception rumors in 73 of it being a bootleg, Once again thanks Mr COOPER please right more often, Dave

HOWYOUDOIN! TOADY BOY, HOPE YOU ARE WELL, MY POINT WAS IN NO WAY AIMED OR INTENDED AT YOU AND OTHER CLEAR THINKERS, ON THE GREEK PAPER SLEEVE, I CAN PUT THAT ONE TO BED, THE SLEEVE IS A LATER ADDITION MADE BY JIM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THE RECORD, LIKE MOST COLLECTORS IF THEY CAN MARRY A SLEEVE TO A RECORD THEY DO SO, IN SOME CASES THE NEAREST ONE TO MAKE A MARRIAGE WILL DO? A EX EXAMPLE IS MARY LOVE KING RECORDING AND SOULFUL JERK, MY COPY'S ARE IN THE RED KING BAG, WE ALL NO THAT THIS SLEEVE COME OUT LATER AND ALWAYS HAD IRISH RECORDS IN, DON'T WE? I CANT SPEAK OR READ GREEK NOR CAN YOU AND NOR COULD JIM, IT LOOKED RIGHT, IT REMINDS ME OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE THERE NAMES TATTOO IN CHINESE AND REALLY BELIEVE SAYS THERE NAME, CAN YOU IMAGINE SOMEONE CALLED RAMSBOTTOM NAME IN A CHINESE TRANSLATION?? SO THATS THAT DONE. THE LLOYD WILLIAMS GREAT RECORD UK COPY WITH STRINGS £30 JA COPY MINUS STRINGS BLANK £20 EVEN THO IT IS THE PREFERRED VERSION BY THE PURISTS AMONG US, STRINGS AND TINGS IS THE ONE FOR ME MATE. HI TOAD ONLY JUST READ THIS, WHO? WHO? IS THERE SOMEONE WHO WOULD THINK THAT ME! A GOOD CATHOLIC WOULD MAKE UP THE STORY, TELL HIM THAT DAVE SAYS " WHETHER YOU ARE BLACK OR YOU ARE WHITE, DON'T WALK THE STREETS ALONE AT NIGHT! UNLESS YOU CAN FIGHT, THEN IT'S ALRIGHT". THIS IS WHY I AM RELUCTANT TO WRITE ABOUT ISSUES, AND I AM NOT ALONE HERE. THE FACT IS MOST ARTICLES WRITTEN ARE INTERPRETATIONS OF WHAT THEY THINK IS BEING SAID, SO MUCH SO THEY BELIEVE IT TO BE THE TRUTH? A GOOD EXAMPLE I READ A FEW WEEKS AGO :- LLOYD WILLIAMS - I'M IN LOVE WITH YOU BAMBOO ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITES AND WITH A GREAT B SIDE, THE ARTICLE SAID ALONG THE LINES SOUL SAM'S DISCOVERY HAS SOLD FOR £300 WHAT! THE F**K IS THAT AND WAS IT WITH STRINGS OR WITHOUT STRINGS??? NOW FINE IF UNLIKE ME YOU WERE NOT AROUND TO KNOW THE RECORD 1st TIME OR YOU ARE A JOHNNY COME LATELY, IS OK WITH ME, BUT TO SAY IT IS A SOUL SAM DISCOVERY. AND BELIEVE IT TO BE TRUE, IF I MET SOMEONE FACE TO FACE AND THEY TOLD ME THIS STORY, I WOULD START THEM OF IN THEPROPERTY BUSINESS BY KICKING THE IN THE BALLS, SO THEY CAN HAVE 2 ACRES TO GET STARTED WITH, I MEAN? WHO ON THE PAMA SITE WAS THIS, I HOPE IT WAS NOT TIM? HE KNOWS AS WELL AS ME THE HISTORY? THATS MY RANT OVER FOR TODAY? DAVE

Rare Uk 45S But What Do You Think?
Hi All and many thanks Ricky, the Pornodisc is a Island/Philip's press, I am always looking for spin offs from this label and all the labels that followed, both soul and reggae, and there was a time i had the hairy stuff as well/ my fav is radio London he final hour, Go GO Texaco well it,s £10 which is well cheap for such a rare oddity + it's hard core, item will be posted in a plain envelope (traditional)/ the Leroy Brown as stated 2 great sides, I first played it at least 10 years ago, it got Roger Nichols attention very quick, and he really does say what he thinks , so knowledgeable is Roger, it is a record that has not been played as fa as i no, value well it's still out there in very small numbers, not seen a issue? so it's £1 from charity shops OR car boots, the York 45 is by ? but I assume it's Lovelace Watkins. this so easy could have been a Wigan spin GGGRRRR I here you say, but like it or not over 90% of Casino punters were not record collectors as we all have OBD & OCD, OUR HIGHS from collecting is on par with crack, always chasing the euphoric parches. the Wigan pop stompers or Tailor made record was never aimed at me or you or the DJ who played them, as they got paid to endorse these records by Pye & SELECTORDISC. A couple of years back I posted pictures of RCA acetates of future grapevine releases, although i collect this stuff i do get pissed of at the thought of DJs playing Larry Clinton at 3am to find out John & Richard had duped other DJs to promote there goods, especially when dealers and collectors had high moral standards about playing Bootlegs, I have no issues with say Richard and Ady playing unreleased soul on acetate or actual bona fide studio disc's, but the line has to be drawn, as i say, i used to sell records in the bar at Wigan along side Pete, Ady & Mick, so have a good idea on what sold or not, and the white US stompers and the obscure UK demos where so quick to sell, compared to a real proper black American Soul singer? sometimes the truth haunts us, but I cant remember the punters complaining about records the Gear yes/ (Dave rant) York records this is the best one to have a 1 sided Demo that knocks the spots of the Tailor made stuff, sound clip I don't no any one else with the record, I will try, Cost me a £5 from a dealer who was trying to draw Mick's attention to it/, Al Green is great and not seen many, not his best by far but such a great song, £5, i have to end for a bit to eat, will be back. DAVE

HI ALL ...As a collector of 45S I just love to find records, that I no are Rare, from many years of looking through piles of wax, some of these records are very common however the few that I am kicking of with, I are to me classics some you will loath, but in there heyday, i can remember 1500 people dancing to them, and indeed buying them, others you may not no at all, but are great records to have, i promise you, and some are my own discoveries, that i have had foe many years, Tell me what you think, sorry no sound clips but if anyone can oblige cheers DAVE KIL
